BUILD ON THEIR STRENGTHSYou know your teen best. Consider the traits you’ve always seen in them, even the negative ones that stretch your parenting patience. Try and change the negative into a positive in your perception and see what strengths your teen really has (e.g., stubborn-ness, could actually be seen as hidden persistence). Ask them what they love doing, then talk to one of the pastors to see where their PASSION can be placed in a POSITION of ministry.

ENCOURAGE THEMEver heard it said: “It takes ten positive comments to outweigh one negative?” Your teenager probably has the negative one covered! So encourage them. Breathe life into them with your words, and do it repeatedly. As an adult, you can actually help them see what they’re good at. Your positive opinion of their strengths does matter, probably even more than they care to admit.

CHALLENGE THEM TO GO JUST A LITTLE BE-YOND THEIR COMFORT ZONETeenagers love their comfort. It is our role as adults to encourage them to move a little beyond their comfort zone in everything they do. Help them realize that muscles grow with resistance. Discom-fort is actually good for them and helps them to mature. It’s only after they see success that they acquire a confidence in themselves and a better understanding of God’s willingness to use them.

This generation has a role to play in our Church. It’s up to the adults to Build, Encourage, and Challenge them to get involved in changing their world.

NEXT GENERATIONSERVICE

A wise person once said, “The generation that will change the world is the generation that will NOT be changed BY the world.” Teenag-ers today are eager to change their world. They have an eagerness to take up a cause. 1 Timothy 4:12 instructs, “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” This stage of life is the perfect time to get involved in ministry, to “set an example” for believers to follow. We are so blessed here at Church on the Queensway to have such a wide variety of opportuni-ties for teens to get involved in ministry.

So the question becomes…How do we get teenagers involved? Here are three thoughts to help you along the way:

4

Page 6: ChurchLIFE Jan-Mar Issue

We are so glad that you’ve decided to spend this time with us today. All of us were newcomers at one time and so we understand how being here for the first

time can be somewhat daunting. We didn’t know our way around, we weren’t familiar with the procedures, and we didn’t know all the songs either! We would like to lessen that feeling for you and we invite you to participate at whatever level you are comfortable with.

MAKING THE CONNECTION

HERE’S WHAT TO EXPECTA warm welcome from our greeters as you come through the doors and friendly faces to put you at ease.

A choice of worship styles to choose from. You’ll receive the same message in both services but in two different formats:

A traditional service with a classical Pentecostal feel. We sing inspirational hymns as well as contemporary Christian music.

If you enjoy more progressive music, drama, dance, and an occasional surprise, you will love our non-traditional service.

Engaging messages about God and life, mostly from our Senior Pastor Billy, and from time to time, by special guest speakers.

A Guest Services counter located in the main lobby is staffed by knowledgeable people. Please feel free to drop by with any questions you may have and pick up more information about our Church.

A comfortable Welcome Centre located just off the main lobby where you can reflect and connect. As a first time newcomer we invite you to enjoy a free beverage and snack, connect with church leadership, and find out more about our Church. You will also receive a free gift to cel-ebrate your arrival at Church on the Queensway.

Newcomers Discovery Lunches offered throughout the year. These complimentary lunches are designed to help you further connect with other people and some of our staff and to celebrate your connection with our Church.

There is a place for your kids, from infants through

to high school, to experi-ence God in an age appro-

priate setting. Check out the many cutting-edge

programs available during our services and at other

times during the week. Our Kids’ Ministry staff would be glad to show

you around the Kids’ Min-istry areas and to acquaint

you with the procedures that are in place for your

child’s safety and comfort.

Page 8: ChurchLIFE Jan-Mar Issue

Church on the Queensway is blessed to have over 500 volun-teers that allow our Church to be a vibrant community of believers. Yes, over 500 people doing something for God!

What do our vol-unteers do? Our volunteers help with everything ... some come every week to fill the seat pockets in the sanctuary with offering envelopes and welcome cards, others lead 12 Step groups while others help in the nursery by caring for the babies of our Church family. It would take me pages to list all the jobs that our volunteers so faithfully serve in the church and in the community. It’s simply amazing!

One of the roles of a pastor is listed in Ephesians 4:12 “... to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up.”

The pastors of Church on the Queensway try our best to obey this

THE VOLUNTEERCONNECTED IN SERVICE

scripture. We make every effort to equip you to do God’s work. We give you the tools and training you need to be effective in the ministry that God has called you to do. We also cheer you along the way, celebrate your victories with you, and to help

you overcome the challenges that come while doing God’s work. Our biggest reward is seeing God use you in incredible ways and seeing lives changed because

of your ministry!

We praise God when you tell us “In that moment I felt the Lord use me, and I discovered that there’s noth-

ing in the world like that. It beats anything else I’ve ever experienced!”

My challenge is to those who have not said “yes” to volunteering to do God’s work. God does not require us to be “perfect” Christians for us to be used for His purposes. He does require a willing heart and our time. Mother Teresa said it this way, “We cannot do great things on this earth, only small things with great love.” So the question is “Will you take up the challenge and volunteer for God’s house? “

If you do, I promise you your life will never be the same!

Karen MilleyAssistant Pastor

My challenge is to those who have not said “yes” to volunteering to do God’s work.

The greatest impact of the Haven is not the programs we offer, it’s the com-mitment, passion and belief of our volunteers, in the calling on their lives to be Christ’s hand extended to those less fortunate within our community.

At the Haven, over 100 volunteers play essential roles in the coordination and services we offer, costing many of them a great deal of personal sacrifice. Some work tirelessly picking up and delivering donations or helping to fix and maintain the building. They pack-age and handout over 300 food bank orders weekly, provide emergency food assistance, sort and hang cloth-ing, prepare sandwiches and chili each week, prepare Christmas hampers and gifts, pray, mentor, listen to someone’s story or reach into the darkness to bring light into a lost life.

Our volunteers are special people who understand the broken lives they are dealing with and are patient and non-judgemental as they form relationships and build trust between themselves and the clients. Jimmy, who is home-less, looks forward to the Hope with Wheels team coming each week to bring him food and has recently begun to love the security of the “group prayer” around him. On one particular night, when they couldn’t find Jimmy’s group, volunteer Mark shared, “I was reminded of the story Jesus taught about the Shepherd leaving the ninety-nine sheep to go and find the one lost sheep - we had to go searching for our friends last night, but were so relieved when we found them. We gave them food, clothing and made a point of leaving each with a word of encourage-ment and HOPE.”

All our volunteers recognize their unique abilities and skills and in turn offer to do God’s important work for the clients and among each other. Judy, a new volunteer shares: “It took almost a year to complete my com-munity hours but during those days the volunteers and staff at the Haven never stopped sharing God’s love to me through their kindness, non-judge-ment, patience and prayers. I asked to continue as a volunteer and now the Haven is my new family.”

The efforts of this strong volunteer force have helped to shape the wel-coming atmosphere of the Haven and quality of our services. Our volunteers are our lifeline and are the reason we are reaching those who are hungry, thirsty and broken in spirit with a mes-sage of Hope for their future.

CALL FROM GODIt is absolutely amazing to see the amount of changes that are possible in just one decade. It is even more amaz-ing to grasp how much can transpire when one individual listens to a ‘word from God’ and acts on it.

In 1998, I heard very clearly a distinctive call in my spirit to go to Thailand and as-sist the missionaries. Having met Peter & Pat DeWit while they were on furlough and residing at the Agincourt Mission House, I fell in love with their spirits and their passion for missions. What gripped my spirit most was the enormity of spiri-tual battles that they had to counteract, the loneliness in which they had to endure this, and the amount of mission-aries that had fallen prey to the spirits of Thailand. From that moment on, I was gripped with a passionate desire to share this burden with them; and so the long journey began.

CONVERSION vs. COMBATAfter convincing Agincourt Church to allow me to take a short term missions Team to Thailand for the expressed reason of ‘praying’ for their missionar-ies and the national pastors, we began the process of team selection. This was going to be one of the first large teams to visit the Asian fields, as large teams in that day predominantly went to Africa or Europe. This was definitely not a crusade/conference style country where the large numbers of conversions would be reported; therefore, many were re-luctant to send teams to Asia. However, the ‘distinct and seemingly foolish call’

STORYLINEREV. MARIE A. MILLER

15

to go, still rang in my spirit.

WHY THERE?After sitting through training, I remember one team member made this statement, “Prayer works from anywhere, and we pray in our churches every week. Why do we need

to spend thousands of dollars to go all the way to Thailand just to pray? God can hear us from right here!” Nevertheless, we went for that sole purpose and the gentleman still joined the team, despite his apprehension. He has since gone to be with the Lord, but had made this statement, “I would never have traded my time in Thailand, praying for those oppressed people, for anything

in the world!” He had the opportunity to hold beaten, oppressed, discouraged young men in his arms and pray for them, while watching their faces transform with hope, strength and deliverance.

WHEN IS THE NUMBER TOO SMALL?As the team traveled across Thailand with Peter DeWit taking us from city to city, church to church, it seemed almost ridiculous what we were doing; prayer marches around the church, gathering the leaders of the church and praying over each one; showing up at services to pray for the congregation. In one Church, the pastor broke down crying as he felt so badly that our team of twelve showed up to pray for him and his church, which only contained eight people. It may have been embarrassing to him, but it was empower-ing for us. The God driven mandate to pray for the oppressed, strengthen the arm of the weak, lift the knees of the discouraged was exhilarating!

RESULTSSince that massive prayer team and prayer vigils in 1999, I have yet to hear of any mis-sionaries falling prey to the gods of Thailand. Prayer does work!‘The road less traveled is now extensively traveled!’ In fact, Thailand has become a mecca for short-term teams to visit and conduct various types of ministries. Perhaps

it is time again for more intercessory teams in a country that is still rife with spiritual attacks.

CONTINUUMSince the road to Thailand is now ‘Well Traveled’, perhaps it is also time to do the same in other countries where the battles are intense, and where praying ‘on-sight with insight,’ could be just what is needed. I have attempted to do the same in countries such as Northern Zambia, Congo, Liberia, Turkana and Cambodia, and I have seen breakthroughs with teams traversing the roads afterwards.

Still to this day, God distinctively calls and directs me to ‘the road less traveled.’ Hence, the last four years I have seen the road to Liberia re-open, and most recently journeyed on the sandy roads of Namibia with Pastor Karen Mil-ley. Now God has deeply impressed in my spirit a burden to get on the road to African French speaking countries - these French countries await the same spirit-driven transformation that Thailand experienced through teams of prayer warriors.

The road is now traveled - was it worth it? Definitely, and it is time for you to allow God to show you where you can make the same differ-ence!

We all battle the “blues” sometime or another which is normal and may occur every once in a while. The “blues” includes feelings of sadness, unhappyiness, or even associated with seasonal depression - during the dark overcast winter months.

Also, feeling low or down, can be associated with worry which is emotionally draining and can wear yourself down towards feeling the “blues.” For some it is followed by beating them-selves up with negative self thoughts.

Depression is a mental health disorder causing one to have a negative state of mind that you see no hope and feel com-pletely trapped in your despair. Whether it is the “blues or depression” both are treatable.

For those of us who may be susceptible to having the “blues” there are many ways in which you can quickly change your mood or pick yourself up. The real test whether you will implement these changes to reap the benefits to conquering the “blues.” The following are some practical ways of conquer-ing the “blues”:

• TAKE A REFRESHING SHOWER. YOU’LL FEEL SO MUCH BETTER

• LISTEN TO INSPIRATIONAL MUSIC• TAKE TIME TO PRAY AND MEDITATE ON SCRIPTURE • EXERCISE—TAKE IN THE OUTDOORS AND THE SCENERY

AROUND YOU OR JOIN A FITNESS CLUB• GET ENOUGH SLEEP –LISTEN TO YOUR BODY TO RE-

STORE & HEAL• TRY SMILING OR BETTER YET WATCH A FUNNY MOVIE.

LAUGHTER WILL MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER • TREAT YOURSELF BY GOING OUT TO DO SOMETHING

YOU LIKE TO DO• HAVE A TIME OF FELLOWSHIP WITH A FRIEND• MAINTAIN HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS—STUDIES HAVE

SHOWN THAT GOOD SOCIAL SUPPORT FROM FAM-ILY AND FRIENDS ARE IMPORTANT WAYS TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM DEPRESSION

• IF NECESSARY CHANGE YOUR DIET WITH PLENTY OF FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

• DRINK PLENTY OF WATER• MAINTAIN SUFFICIENT VITAMIN LEVELS. FOR EXAMPLE:

DURING THE WINTER MONTHS TAKE THE SUNSHINE VI-TAMIN CALLED VITAMIN D3 WHICH WILL RESTORE THE VITAMIN LEVEL IN YOUR BODY

• READ A GOOD BOOK OR SELF-HELP BOOK• TEND TO SOME LONG FORGOTTEN CHORES OR TAKE UP

A HOBBY• AND LASTLY, GET TREATMENT IF NECESSARY.

THE CHOICE IS UP TO YOU. BE HAPPY AND CONQUER THE “BLUES.”Rev Irene Cirella
