From the Pastor’s Desk A Reflec on on Today’s Gospel by Pope Francis
"Dear brothers and sisters, this Sunday we con nue our reading of the tenth chapter of Luke's Gospel. Today’s passage is that of Martha and Mary. Both offer hospitality to the Lord who is passing, but they do it in a different way. Mary places herself at Jesus' feet, listening. Martha, who allows herself to become absorbed by the things to prepare, and it is so busy that she turns to Jesus and says, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has le me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me". And Jesus answers gently scolding her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing".
"It is important to understand that this is not the contrast between two a tudes: listening to the word of the Lord, contempla on, and prac cal service to others. They are not two opposing a tudes, but, on the contrary, both are two essen al aspects to our Chris an life aspects that should never be separated but lived in profound unity and harmony. " But then he con nued, "why is Marta rebuked, even if gently, by Jesus? Because she considered essen al only what she was doing, because she was too self-absorbed and preoccupied by things by doing". "For a Chris an, the works of service and charity are never detached from the main source of all our ac ons: listening to the Word of the Lord, being - like Mary - at the feet of Jesus, in the a tude of the disciple. And this is why Marta is reprimanded. "
This reflec on resulted on Luke's Gospel does not stop at that historical period or the circle of the disciples of the living Christ: "Even in our Chris an life dear brothers and sisters, prayer and ac on are always deeply united. A prayer that does not lead to concrete ac on towards the poor, sick, in need of help, is a sterile and incomplete prayer. " But the Pope added with equal force "when we pay more a en on to doing in the service of the Church, when we give more weight to objects, func ons, structures, and forget the centrality of Christ, when we do not reserve me for dialogue with Him in prayer, we risk serving ourselves and not God present in the poor. St. Benedict summed up the lifestyle that he indicated to his monks in two words: "ora et labora," prayer and work. It is from contempla on, a strong friendship with the Lord that the ability to live and bring the love of God, his mercy, and his compassion towards others is born in us. And our merciful ac on toward our brother brings us toward the Lord, so that we see the Lord in our poor brother. "
Blessings, Father Brian

“...I am a minister in accordance with God’s stewardship given to me to bring to comple on for you the word of God.” (Colossians 1:25)
We are all called to evangelize — to con nuously grow in our rela onship with Jesus and to share it with others. We may not be called to evangelize like St. Paul, but we should look for opportuni es to share our faith with those closest to us, like our family, friends, and neighbors. Pray for the courage to share your faith the next me the opportunity arises.

MEATLOAF NEEDED
The Council of Catholic Women provides a meal on the fourth Monday of every month at the Samaritan Homeless Interim Program’s Galley Soup Kitchen in Somerville. The main course is meatloaf. We currently have none in our freezer. Each month we need 15-20 meatloaves. All you have to do is bake a 2-pound meatloaf, wrap it in plastic, freeze it, put a date on it, and deliver it to the Parish Office during their business hours. Please take some time this summer to help us stock up on meatloaf so that we can continue to feed the hungry poor and homeless souls who count us on each month.
