Thanks to Bill White for sharing this useful advice for those who do not have their own Facebook account. "Every time I go to the church's Facebook page I get a notice at the bottom of the screen to log-in to Facebook or set up a new account. When that notice first appears it doesn't show any option to exit the "request". However, after 2-3 seconds another box appears on the screen allowing the option to select "not now". Select the not now option and you can watch the live streaming without a Facebook account.

NOVENA TO THE HOLY SPIRIT for Our Confirmation Candidates

to be confirmed by Bishop Mark Brennan here on Saturday, October 17

Group 1 at 10:00AM Mass: Roman Adams Hugh Brotherton Conor Caldwell Elaina Caldwell Rocco Eates

Amelia Hassig Steven Mattix Katherine Mattix Bryson Dowdy Luke Dent

Group 2 at 1:00PM Mass: RT Corbin Olivia Hayes James Robertson Dylan Poston Adeline Queen

Eli Simonton Nathaniel Simonton Anna Toledo Ryan Zitzelsberger Kelly Knuckles

Suggested format: Each day, begin with the same Invocation, then read the special Reading for each day, then give

yourself a few moments of silence to digest the Reading, then end with same Prayer each day.

Invocation:

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Take a moment of silence to be aware of your lungs expanding and contracting.

O God, come to my assistance! O Lord, make haste to help me!

Take a moment of silence to be aware of your need to take in fresh air.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit!

As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Take a moment of silence to be aware of how you cannot live without breathing.

Remember that in the original languages of the Bible, the word for "spirit" can also be translated as "wind" or "breath"

Prayer:

O God, please send forth your Holy Spirit upon our candidates for Confirmation so that they may know how much you

love them and how many gifts you have given them to carry out their part in the mission of your Church. Send forth your

Holy Spirit upon their parents and sponsors to guide them each day into your way of holiness! Send forth your Holy Spirit

upon our Bishop, Mark, to speak a word that reaches their hearts! Send forth your Holy Spirit upon our whole parish, so

that we will support these candidates by our love, leadership and good example! Send forth your Holy Spirit to renew the

face of the whole earth! We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the

Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.

Day 1 Friday October 9

Reading: Genesis 1:1

In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth—and the earth was without form or shape, with darkness

over the abyss and a mighty wind sweeping over the waters

Day 2 Saturday October 10

Reading: Psalm 104:1-4

Bless the LORD, my soul! LORD, my God, you are great indeed! You are clothed with majesty and splendor, robed in light

as with a cloak. You spread out the heavens like a tent; setting the beams of your chambers upon the waters. You make

the clouds your chariot; traveling on the wings of the wind. You make the winds your messengers; flaming fire, your

ministers.

Day 3 Sunday October 11

Reading: Psalm 51:11-14

O God, Turn away your face from my sins; blot out all my iniquities. A clean heart create for me, God; renew within me a

steadfast spirit. Do not drive me from before your face, nor take from me your holy spirit. Restore to me the gladness of

your salvation; uphold me with a willing spirit.

Day 4 Monday October 12

Reading: Psalm 143:10

Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. May your kind spirit guide me on ground that is level.

Day 5 Tuesday October 13

Reading: Isaiah 11:2

A shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom. The spirit of the LORD shall rest

upon him: a spirit of wisdom and of understanding, a spirit of counsel and of strength, a spirit of knowledge and of fear of

the LORD, and his delight shall be the fear of the LORD.

Day 6 Wednesday October 14

Reading: Isaiah 61:1-3

The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me. He has sent me to bring good news to the

afflicted, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and release to the prisoners, to announce a year

of favor from the LORD and a day of vindication by our God, to comfort all who mourn, to place on those who mourn in

Zion a diadem instead of ashes, to give them oil of gladness instead of mourning, a glorious mantle instead of a faint

spirit.

Day 7 Thursday October 15

Reading: Ezechiel 37:12-14

Thus says the Lord GOD: Look! I am going to open your graves; I will make you come up out of your graves, my people,

and bring you back to the land of Israel. You shall know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves and make you come

up out of them, my people! I will put my spirit in you that you may come to life, and I will settle you in your land. Then you

shall know that I am the LORD. I have spoken; I will do it—oracle of the LORD.

Day 8 Friday October 16

Reading: Joel 3:1-2

It shall come to pass that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will

dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even upon your male and female servants,

in those days, I will pour out my spirit.

Day 9 Saturday October 17

Reading: Micah 3:8

I am filled with power, with the spirit of the LORD, with justice and with might.

YOUTH MINISTRY NEWS

by Mary Odin

Thank you for supporting our Hike for Hunger!

Last Saturday afternoon, October 3, members of our youth group and our families held our own socially-distanced Hike for Hunger in the Kanawha State Forest. Your checks and donations to our GoFundMe page helped us raise just over $2000 for the food pantry at Heart + Hand Outreach Ministries. Below are some pictures of our hike, along with a message to you all which we found in the forest:

T H A N K

Y O U …for helping us live Jesus’ words from Matthew 25:40:

”As you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.”

Next Sunday's Mass Readings – October 18, 2020

Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time A

Reading 1 Isaiah 45:1, 4-6

Thus says the LORD to his anointed, Cyrus, whose right hand I grasp, subduing nations before him, and making kings run

in his service, opening doors before him and leaving the gates unbarred: For the sake of Jacob, my servant, of Israel, my

chosen one, I have called you by your name, giving you a title, though you knew me not. I am the LORD and there is no

other, there is no God besides me. It is I who arm you, though you know me not, so that toward the rising and the setting

of the sun people may know that there is none besides me. I am the LORD, there is no other.

Responsorial Psalm Psalms 96:1, 3, 4-5, 7-8, 9-10

R. Give the Lord glory and honor.

Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all you lands.

Tell his glory among the nations; among all peoples, his wondrous deeds.

R. Give the Lord glory and honor.

For great is the LORD and highly to be praised; awesome is he, beyond all gods.

For all the gods of the nations are things of naught, but the LORD made the heavens.

R. Give the Lord glory and honor.

Give to the LORD, you families of nations, Give to the LORD glory and praise; give to the LORD the glory due his name!

Bring gifts, and enter his courts.

R. Give the Lord glory and honor.

Worship the LORD, in holy attire; tremble before him, all the earth;

say among the nations: The LORD is king, he governs the peoples with equity.

R. Give the Lord glory and honor.

Reading 2 1 Thessalonians 1:1-5B

Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy to the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: grace to you

and peace. We give thanks to God always for all of you, remembering you in our prayers, unceasingly calling to mind your

work of faith and labor of love and endurance in hope of our Lord Jesus Christ, before our God and Father, knowing,

brothers and sisters loved by God, how you were chosen. For our gospel did not come to you in word alone, but also in

power and in the Holy Spirit and with much conviction.

Gospel Matthew 22:15-21

The Pharisees went off and plotted how they might entrap Jesus in speech.

They sent their disciples to him, with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man and that you

teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. And you are not concerned with anyone's opinion, for you do not

regard a person's status. Tell us, then, what is your opinion: Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?"

Knowing their malice, Jesus said, "Why are you testing me, you hypocrites? Show me the coin that pays the census tax."

Then they handed him the Roman coin. He said to them, "Whose image is this and whose inscription?" They replied,

"Caesar's." At that he said to them, "Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar.”
