A Letter from Our Bishop, Mark Brennan
Dear Blessed Sacrament Parish, S. Charleston,
This past year has been unlike anything I ever experienced before. And yet, through it all, I witnessed
the unshakable faith and kindness of our parish families – like yours – and our priests and leaders
from all across our state.
From Wheeling to Bluefield and Charleston to Martinsburg, we came together and equipped our
pastoral leaders with the tools needed to teach the faith and celebrate the Sacraments. We also
expanded our charitable outreach and delivered essential shared ministries throughout our diocese to
those who needed it most.
All of these things were made possible thanks to the generosity of so many, including those who have
financially supported our diocese over the years through the Catholic Sharing Appeal (CSA). The
CSA is an annual appeal that provides support to our parishes and shared ministries, including our
youth and children’s ministries, Catholic education, Catechist training, and support for the poor and
most vulnerable.
In the coming weeks, we will share additional information about this year’s CSA with you and show
you how your generosity makes an impact in the lives of others. I ask you to take time to reflect on
the materials provided, visit the CSA website dwc.org/csa and prayerfully consider making a
sacrificial gift to this year’s appeal.
The CSA is more than just an annual fund. It is a call to prayer and service when we need it the most.
God bless you, your family and your parish and know you are always in my thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely in Christ,
+Mark E. Brennan
Bishop of Wheeling-Charleston
P.S. I would like to include your intentions in my daily prayers throughout the year. Please visit
dwc.org/csaprayerintentions to share your prayer intentions with me.
Let me add my enthusiastic endorsement to this year's CSA campaign. I encourage all to join me in making a very generous donation. I found the website very user-friendly to make a donation, either one-time or recurring as you prefer. I was able to add my comment that I intended my donation to be both a prayer of thanks to God for sending Bishop Brennan to us and a personal affirmation of his refreshingly down-to-earth presence. Join the Discussion about Laudato Si (On Care for Our Common Home)
Our first meeting will be Monday, April 19th from 7:00 – 8:30pm via Zoom.
(Here’s the link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84726969269?pwd=WnlLUitTZ2g4a002cnY0L0N4NkFKUT09
Meeting ID: 847 2696 9269 Passcode: 769275 or call: 253-215-8782)
Our first discussion (of seven) will be led by Donna Becher. Here are sneak peeks of the evening’s topics.
In the Introduction, Pope Francis lays out his vision of global environmental deterioration and a spirituality of
care in Laudato si’: On Care for Our Common Home. The introduction begins with the words that become the
title: Laudato si’, mi’ Signore” – “Praise be to you, my Lord.” These are the words of the beautiful poetic song
written by St. Francis of Assisi in the 13th century that reminds us that being in relationship with God and all
Creation is to live a life of praise to our God for our common home, that is “like a sister with whom we share
our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us” (1).
Chapter One, “What is Happening to Our Common Home” This chapter of the encyclical is a frank look at
the facts of our world so that the reader might “become painfully aware” of the ways we have not been
providing protection and care of the very place we call “home.” This chapter is not meant to be abstract
analysis but to “turn what is happening to the world into our own personal suffering and thus to discover what
each of us can do about it” (19).
“The Gospel of Creation” is this title for Chapter Two. After the Pope’s diagnostic chapter about what’s
happening to our “common home,” the second chapter of the Pope’s encyclical argues that our faith
convictions can and should motivate Christians to assume their responsibility as caretakers of creation. It is
often the case that many Christians feel that environmental stewardship is secondary or tangential to living out
the faith, but the Pope wants to wipe this sentiment away. Science has a role to play in the conversation about
the future of the world but so does our Christian faith. To make this argument, Pope Francis begins by
highlighting the many biblical narratives that speak of the love and wisdom of a God who is Creator and
sustainer of all Creation. The biblical narratives, he says, “suggests that human life is grounded in three
fundamental and close intertwined relationships: with God, with our neighbor, and with earth itself” (66). While
all of these relationships have been riddled by brokenness in our assertion of power and dominion, our
particular calling as people of faith is for wholeness, reconciliation, and peace. This calling will in effect
challenge us to be the kind of people who will not let the earth be despoiled and people forgotten.
This series of discussions is being offered by Blessed Sacrament’s Creation Care Team. Would you like to learn

Serran Prayer for Vocations
O God, Who wills not the death of a sinner, but rather that he be converted and live, grant we beseech you, through the intercession of the Blessed Mary ever Virgin, Saint Joseph, her spouse, Saint Junipero Serra, and all the saints, an increase of laborers for Your church, fellow laborers with Christ to spend and consume themselves for souls, through the same Jesus Christ Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever, and ever. Amen.
Travelling Vocation Prayer Chalice
We have begun again to send home this chalice to a household in our parish
for a one-week period, during which the household can display the chalice
as a reminder to pray for those whom God is calling to Holy Orders and
Consecrated Life. However, we will send it only every other week, so it has
a week back at church to rid it of any corona virus. We will also not have a
sign-up list but simply invite those present at Mass to volunteer. If you will
not be present at Mass but would like to have the chalice for a week, please
notify our parish office and we'll make arrangements to get it to you.
Year of Saint Joseph
Consecration to St. Joseph
Have you ever wondered about St. Joseph, the spouse of Mary and the father of Jesus? I have, and I always wanted to
know more. Then one day in 2020, while watching EWTN, Donald Calloway, MIC was talking about his recent book, The
Consecration to St. Joseph: The Wonders of Our Spiritual Father. The book takes you through a 33 day preparation and
journey to learn about the greatness of St. Joseph and to a total consecration to St. Joseph.
Pope Francis declared 2021 the year of St. Joseph, time for us to consecrate ourselves to St. Joseph. So this year I took
myself once again on the 33 day journey, beginning on February, 15th and ending on March 19th. There are eight starting
dates in each calendar year to begin the 33 days, each one ending on a special Feast Day. The Consecration Chart is
shown on page 16 in the book.
St. Joseph is a model of Faithfulness, Fatherhood, and Workmen. He had a deep love for Mary and Jesus. He was a
zealous and courageous defender of Mary and Jesus. He was foremost loyal and obedient to God. You will learn more
about our Spiritual Father St. Joseph from many Saints and Popes while reading this book.
Do you know about “Sleeping St. Joseph? The mysterious man who built a spiral staircase for the Sisters of Loretto? The
Patron of the Universal Church? The Holy House of Loreto? The Terror of Demons? All the answers to these questions
and many facts and stories can be found in the book, Consecration to Saint Joseph: The Wonders of Our Spiritual Father.
Pope Pius X approved this prayer:
O Joseph, virgin father of Jesus, most pure spouse of the Virgin Mary, pray for us daily to the same Jesus, the Son of God
that, armed with the weapons of his grace, we may fight as we ought during life, and be crowned by him at the moment
of our death. Amen.
One of the Daily Acts of Consecration to St. Joseph:
My Father and my Guardian, I give myself entirely to you, and to show my devotion to you, I consecrate to you this day
my eyes, my ears, my mouth, my heart, my whole being without reserve. Wherefore, O good Father, since I am Your
own, keep me and guard me as your property and possession. Amen.
Memorare to St. Joseph:
Remember, O Most Chase Spouse of the Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection,
implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, my spiritual
father, and beg your protection. O Foster Father of the Redeemer, despise not my petitions, but in your goodness hear
and answer me. Amen Our Spiritual Father St. Joseph, pray for us. Presented by: Mary Gargarella
Sisters of the Infant Jesus Continue Collection of Rosaries for Zimbabwe
CLARKSBURG—The Sisters of the Infant Jesus at Immaculate Conception Parish in Clarksburg are continuing their
collection of rosaries (intact or broken) or religious medals to send back to Zimbabwe, one of the poorest lands in Africa.
“This country, which is on the verge of starvation and genocide, is one of the poorest lands in Africa,” parish officials said
in December. “Do you have extra rosaries (intact or broken) or religious medals? Consider donating them for
distribution to Zimbabwe Catholics. Your help in this endeavor would be greatly appreciated! This is from our hands
directly into hands that are not able to afford or find these items which we take for granted.” The sisters ask the faithful
to send rosary beads or other items before May 14 to Sister Maria/Sister Beritha, Immaculate Conception Church, 150 S.
Maple St., Clarksburg, WV 26301. They also ask that donors include a note with the name or his or her
parish/organization so the sisters can add them to their prayer lists and express their thanks. For more information, call
(304) 203-8399.

Prayer is our personal response to God's presence. The West Virginia Institute for Spirituality (WVIS) invites you to participate in a guided prayer experience to begin the week of April 18, 2021. We will be using the book, Love: A Guide for Prayer, by Bergan and Schwan and gather in small groups weekly for 6 weeks. I am from love, of love, for love.” This collection of prayer exercises focuses on knowing and affirming God’s love for you. Each week we will pray together for the grace of an intimate and heartfelt experience of God’s love. Each member of the group will commit to pray with the exercises daily then gather weekly in small groups on ZOOM, led by a spiritual director to share our experiences of God in our prayer for that week. Next Sunday's Mass Readings – April 18, 2021
Third Sunday of Easter
Reading I Acts 3:13-15, 17-19 Peter said to the people: “The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and denied in Pilate’s presence when he had decided to release him. You denied the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. The author of life you put to death, but God raised him from the dead; of this we are witnesses. Now I know, brothers, that you acted out of ignorance, just as your leaders did; but God has thus brought to fulfillment what he had announced beforehand through the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer. Repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away.” Responsorial Psalm 4:2, 4, 7-8, 9 R. Lord, let your face shine on us. When I call, answer me, O my just God, you who relieve me when I am in distress; have pity on me, and hear my prayer! R. Lord, let your face shine on us. Know that the LORD does wonders for his faithful one; the LORD will hear me when I call upon him. R. Lord, let your face shine on us. O LORD, let the light of your countenance shine upon us! You put gladness into my heart. R. Lord, let your face shine on us. As soon as I lie down, I fall peacefully asleep, for you alone, O LORD, bring security to my dwelling. R. Lord, let your face shine on us. Reading II 1 John 2:1-5a My children, I am writing this to you so that you may not commit sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous one. He is expiation for our sins, and not for our sins only but for those of the whole world. The way we may be sure that we know him is to keep his commandments. Those who say, “I know him,” but do not keep his commandments are liars, and the truth is not in them. But whoever keeps his word, the love of God is truly perfected in him. Gospel Lk 24:35-48 The two disciples recounted what had taken place on the way, and how Jesus was made known to them in the breaking of bread. While they were still speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” But they were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost. Then he said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.” And as he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed, he asked them, “Have you anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of baked fish; he took it and ate it in front of them. He said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. And he said to them, “Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.”
