  • Next Sunday's Mass Readings – January 10, 2021

    Baptism of the Lord

    Reading I Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7

    Thus says the LORD:

Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased,

upon whom I have put my spirit; he shall bring forth justice to the nations,

not crying out, not shouting, not making his voice heard in the street.

a bruised reed he shall not break, and a smoldering wick he shall not quench,

until he establishes justice on the earth; the coastlands will wait for his teaching.

    I, the LORD, have called you for the victory of justice, I have grasped you by the hand;

I formed you, and set you as a covenant of the people, a light for the nations, to open the eyes of the blind,

to bring out prisoners from confinement, and from the dungeon, those who live in darkness.

    Responsorial Psalm Psalms 29:1-2, 3-4, 3, 9-10

    R. The Lord will bless his people with peace.

Give to the LORD, you sons of God, give to the LORD glory and praise,

Give to the LORD the glory due his name; adore the LORD in holy attire.

    R. The Lord will bless his people with peace.

The voice of the LORD is over the waters, the LORD, over vast waters.

The voice of the LORD is mighty; the voice of the LORD is majestic.

    R. The Lord will bless his people with peace.

The God of glory thunders, and in his temple all say, “Glory!”

The LORD is enthroned above the flood; the LORD is enthroned as king forever.

    R. The Lord will bless his people with peace.

    Reading II Acts 10:34-38

Peter proceeded to speak to those gathered in the house of Cornelius, saying:

“In truth, I see that God shows no partiality. Rather, in every nation whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to

him. You know the word that he sent to the Israelites as he proclaimed peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all,

what has happened all over Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached, how God anointed Jesus of

Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God

    was with him.”

    Gospel Mark 1:7-11

This is what John the Baptist proclaimed:

“One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals.

I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

It happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John.

On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him.

And a voice came from the heavens, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

  • The following two testimonies were written at my request. JHF

A Parishioner’s Glorious and Meaningful Christmas Eve Experience by Don Becher This Christmas Eve I was reminded of the saints among us. The temperature was predicted to drop below 15 degrees and so Charleston’s warming shelter was opened. It is staffed by volunteers. I, being older than the other volunteers at the shelter and known to those in charge as the father-in-law of someone they frequently work with, was safely ensconced during the slowest shift of the night (midnight to 4 a.m.) at the intake table behind a sheet of plastic, a face shield, and a KN-95 mask. The other courageous volunteers in this time of Covid worked directly with those needing shelter—seeking them out in the streets, working to feed them and providing a safe place to sleep for the night. Many of these efforts were made more difficult by the mental state of certain individuals and the disinclination of some to keep masks in place. The shelter was being run by a volunteer who, as I understand from my contacts with her and from what others have said, pretty much devotes all her time to serve the homeless. The true worth of what was being done on this Christmas Eve was strikingly brought home to me at about 12:30 a.m. when three individuals came in shivering from the cold. A man and a woman had driven up from Tennessee to get the third from CAMC. When he was released from the hospital they did not know where to go at this late hour, and I assume they did not have the money for a motel. The woman said that they were freezing and weren’t really certain what to do until someone told them of the shelter. Their story reminded me of another couple and their charge who fruitlessly sought shelter on this night over 2,000 years ago, when an innkeeper responded to their needs. I thought of the woman running the shelter that night and her role as the innkeeper: both provided perhaps not the grandest shelter, but the best they could do. All this made it one of the most glorious and meaningful Christmas Eves I have ever experienced!

Hunger, Heartbreak and Hope by Rory Isaac I want to relate to you something that my wife, Kim, and I experienced this past Christmas week. On December 22nd Kim and I went out to Good Shepherd Food Pantry in Coalburg to distribute food and toys to families in that area. We read about the opportunity to volunteer in the bulletin a couple of weeks ago and called Debbie Wright to see if we could help. She told us that the 22nd would be a good day to come and that we should try and get there by 7:30 am as the distribution would start at 8 am. We drove out that morning and got to the Church around 7:15 am. It was still dark, and we noticed a line of headlights on the frontage road as far as we could see. We were sure something was wrong. We didn't know if there had been an accident or what. However, when we arrived at the pantry, we were told it was just the people in their cars lining up to wait for the distribution to begin at 8 o’clock. We checked in with Debbie and received our assignments for the morning. Kathy Farry, another Blessed Sacrament parishioner, was there as well. Observing her familiarity with what was needed, we could tell she had volunteered several times in the past. In our assignments, Kim and I both interacted with the clients at their vehicles. To tell you we were moved by what we saw and experienced would be a massive understatement. It was honestly heartbreaking. We saw people ranging in age from infants to people in their nineties and all ages in between. We served at least ten families who it appeared were living in their vehicles. We also saw people who you could tell were not used to accepting charity to feed their families. That morning in 3 ½ hours, Good Shepherd Food Pantry served over 230 families with either food or food and toys. Kim and I were both moved by the immense gratitude expressed to the staff and volunteers by the clients. We heard "thank you" and "God bless you" repeatedly – and not a bit of frustration, even though many of them waited in line over two hours to get a single bag of groceries and a boxed ham! It was at once both heart-warming and heartbreaking. It was also very humbling. Debbie explained that the Good Shepherd Food Pantry was currently serving 75 to 80 families per week with food assistance. She explained that the numbers were up because of COVID and the closure of two additional mines. Before the pandemic, they were serving about half that many families. She also asked us to express to our entire parish their appreciation for the support they receive from Blessed Sacrament Parish. She said that support was critical to their being able to continue this ministry. Kim, and I want to thank the Parish Pastoral Council for supporting this vital ministry and allowing us to play a small part in it. It was honestly one of the best parts of this very unusual Christmas.
