As dear brothers and sisters in Christ, all of you are very near to our hearts and our

prayers every day of this Easter Season! We have celebrated the Vigil, remembered

the Lamb slain for our sins and the Risen Lord who redeems us, and made and

renewed vows of faith and obedience. Now we live joyfully together, considering our

“next steps” as we patiently wait for God’s grace to transform us and to call us into

deeper friendship with God, deeper involvement in the very life of God.

HAPPY EASTER! JESUS CHRIST IS RISEN! ALLELUIA! ALLELUIA! The following is a story that brings to life the Easter mystery.

Boston preacher, Dr. S.D. Gordon, placed a beat up, bent, rusted old bird cage beside his pulpit when he told this story.

An unkempt, unwashed, little lad about 10 years old was coming up the alley swinging this old caved in bird cage with several tiny birds shivering on the floor of it. The compassionate Dr. Gordon asked the boy where he got the birds. He said he trapped them.

Dr. Gordon asked what he was going to do with them. The boy said he was going to play with them and have fun with them. The preacher said, “Sooner or later you’ll get tired of them. Then what are you going to do with them?” The lad said, “I have some cats at home. They like birds. I’ll feed them to my cats.”

Dr. Gordon said, “Son, how much do you want for the birds?” The boy, surprised, hesitated and said, “Mister, you don’t want these birds. They’re just plain old field birds. They can’t even sing. They’re ugly.” The preacher said, “Just tell me. How much do you want?”

The grubby little lad thought about it. He squinted up one eye. He calculated and hesitated and said, “Two dollars?” To his surprise Dr. Gordon reached into his pocket and handed the boy two, one dollar bills.

The preacher took the cage. The boy, in a wink, hurried up the alley. In a sheltered crevice between buildings, Dr. Gordon opened the door of the cage and tapping on the rusty exterior he encouraged the little birds, one at a time, to find their way out through the narrow door and fly away.

Thus having accounted for the empty cage beside his pulpit, the preacher went on to tell what seemed, at first, like a separate story.

Once upon a time, Jesus and the Devil had engaged in a negotiation.

Satan had boasted how he’d baited a trap in Eden’s garden and caught himself a world full of people. “What are you going to do with all those people in your cage” Jesus wanted to know.

The Devil said, “I’m going to play with em’, tease em’. Make them marry and divorce and fight and kill one another. I’m going to teach them to throw bombs on one another. I’m going to have fun with them!”

Jesus said, “You can’t have fun with them forever. When you get tired of playing, what are you going to do with them?” Satan said, “Damn them! They’re no good anyway! Damn them! Kill them!”

Jesus said, “How much do you want for them?” Satan said, “You can’t be serious! If I sell them to you, they’ll just spit on you. They’ll hate you. They’ll hit you and beat you. They’ll hammer nails into you! They’re no good.”

Jesus said, “How much?” Satan said, “All of your tears and all of your blood. That’s the price.”

Jesus took the cage, and paid the price, and opened the door.

What is the significance of this story to Easter? The story of Good Friday is that Jesus Christ suffered and died on the cross for all people through all times. What Easter proclaims is not only did Jesus Christ suffer and die for all people, through his resurrection he brought the hope that those for whom he died could live with him eternally. Holy Humor Q. Who was the greatest financier in the Bible? A. Noah. He was floating his stock while everyone else was in liquidation. Q. What was the greatest female financier in the Bible? A. Pharaoh's daughter. She went down to the bank of the Nile and drew out a little prophet. Q. What kind of motor vehicles are in the Bible? A. Jehovah drove Adam and Eve out of the Garden in a Fury. David's Triumph was heard throughout the land.

Q. Who was the greatest comedian in the Bible? A. Samson. He brought the house down. Q. What excuse did Adam give to his children as to why he no longer lived in Eden? A. Your mother ate us out of house and home. Q. Which servant of God was the most flagrant lawbreaker in the Bible? A. Moses. He broke all 10 commandments at once. Q. Which area of Palestine was especially wealthy? A. The area around Jordan. The banks were always overflowing. Q. Who is the greatest babysitter mentioned in the Bible? A. David. He rocked Goliath to a very deep sleep. Answer for the Week

Question: Father Schuster, what was the tradition in the Schuster household on Easter Sunday? Answer: My mother always made a ham dinner with all the fixings. There was always one other tradition. The Easter Bunny made his arrival on Easter morning. When we were very young, this meant baskets on the kitchen table or outside of our doors. But with time, the Easter Bunny became more creative. The bunny would hide our items in various places throughout the house and we would have to search them out. Each year it became more and more challenging. Finally, as we got older, we didn’t have the enthusiasm to look so some of our candy was never found. And with that, I learned something about the Easter Bunny. The Easter Bunny is pretty wise because as we grew and lost the passion to look, it was back to candy in one easy location.

Question for the Week Question: Father, next week is Divine Mercy Sunday. What is mercy? Is forgiveness the same as mercy? I’ll provide the answer next week. God’s blessings! Father Schuster

We will address these questions as well as communication tips for “being a good neighbor and friend” with someone who is experiencing memory loss. Discussion will also focus on how we can help others at our local churches whether at Mass or at a parish activity. Presenters are Lynne Hemann & Sarah Lawrence, Dementia Friend Champions. Easter Blessings to you and your family! One of my favorite traditions on Easter is the wearing of an Easter bonnet. It makes me smile whenever I see someone wearing one. It brings back fond memories of past Easter celebrations. It is just a hat, but it marks time in a special

way and is steeped in meaning. My husband’s grandfather would light up

whenever he saw me wearing an Easter hat, which warmed my heart. May you find great joy in your Easter traditions and may

they help you experience God’s love in a deeper way.

Our first reading this Sunday we hear Peter say, “We are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem.” You and I are witnesses for Christ and his Church today. How are we doing? I know that I am timid and struggle to share all that God has done for me with family and friends. It is almost easier to express my joy with strangers. Rarely do I invite someone to join me on Sunday, where we receive the greatest gift of all, Jesus himself. Let us strive to share Jesus more this Easter Season.

One simple way to understand how the early disciples struggled to witness their faith, live as disciples, and build the Church is to read the Acts of the Apostles, which follows the four Gospels in the Bible. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the church miraculously went from a small group of disciples in Jerusalem to a movement spreading across the entire world. I encourage you to read these 28 chapters this Easter Season. Each Sunday throughout the Easter season, you will hear passages from Acts as the First Reading is proclaimed. Together we can hear anew how the Holy Spirit wants to guide us too.

When I think of the early disciples embracing the mystery of how to build the Church, I am reminded of our charter members. In 1967 there were 365 families that joined Fr. Zenk to begin the Church of the Resurrection. Today this parish includes almost 1400 households. Resurrection will be celebrating her 50th Anniversary this year. Planning is underway for our anniversary celebration. I would like to thank all of the volunteers who have stepped forward to help. Their excitement is contagious.

RESURRECTION ROUNDUP We want all of you to SAVE THIS DATE—Sunday, June 11, 2017. We will celebrate our anniversary with a special Mass at 10 a.m. This Mass will be the only Mass celebrated that Sunday. Following the Mass, there will be a big reception in Fr. Zenk Hall for everyone. We ask your help in getting the word out to former Resurrection members to come and celebrate with us.

In Resurrection’s beginning years, parishioners organized a citywide Rodeo to raise funds to build the church buildings. It was quite an undertaking and was held at the Olmsted County Fairground for 9 years.

Enjoy God’s embrace.

The Easter Season and the Acts of the Apostles

Christ is Risen!

Today is the Sunday of the Resurrection! The program that we use at all the Masses is the same program that was used on Holy Thursday as we began the Sacred Triduum – the shortest and the most important season of our Liturgical Year. The Sacred Triduum is three days long – beginning at sunset on Holy Thursday and ending at sunset on Easter Sunday. To mark the end of the Sacred Triduum and begin the great Season of Easter – the Church encourages us to pray Evening Prayer. If you have never prayed this prayer, make today the first time. Copies are available in the Gathering Space – or you can go on-line at iBreviary.com.

Thank you to EVERYONE: ushers, greeters, musicians, lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, decorators, servers, fire builders, cleaners, instrumentalists, program stuffers and especially YOU – for celebrating the Triduum Liturgies here at the Church of the Resurrection. Since we are named after the Resurrection – Easter Sunday is the feast day of our parish. In fact, every Sunday is a celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus!

When we gather for Mass on Sunday, the first reading is usually taken from the Hebrew Scriptures (the Old Testament). During the eight Sundays of Easter, however, the first reading is taken from the Acts of the Apostles. This first book of the New Testament (after the four Gospels) records the reception of Easter faith in the early Christian community.

The selections from the Acts of the Apostles that we read on these eight Sundays, record how those first Christians received the Spirit and carried forward Jesus’ mission. This is a “mini history” of the Church where we learn how the new Life of Jesus’ resurrection re-created these people. These accounts from Acts are a concrete example of what the Gospels promise and help us see how we can make risen Life real in our own lives.

When deciding what book we might offer to the parish to read during this Easter Season –the Acts of the Apostles seemed to be the perfect fit! The book has twenty-eight chapters and there are fifty days in the season. What a great opportunity to read about the life and the challenges of the early Church – men and women who were called to witness to what they had seen and heard. We are called to do the same - to proclaim the Risen Christ to everyone we meet – the triumph of GOD’S great love!

Psalm Refrain for April 23 Sunday of Divine Mercy (2nd Sunday of Easter)

Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting. OR Alleluia!

Faith Formation News from Sheila, Sunday School [email protected] or 288-5528 x101

He has risen! Happy Easter! Today, we are celebrating the fact that Jesus rose from the dead and is alive! Look around and see with new eyes, hear with new ears the proclamation of the truth: He has risen! Alleluia, alleluia. Jesus, we praise you, we thank you for the joy of the resurrection. Help me to recall your sacrifice with awe, humility, and obedience. Make me a fit instrument of your will so that I may have the courage and strength to go forth and share your peace with those who are seeking. Help me to be present to those who are not ready to hear your truth. Help me to be childlike in my faith, so that one day, I may share with you the joy of everlasting life. Amen.

Reminder that there is no Sunday School April 16th, 23rd, and 30th. No Nursery on April 16th.

News from Stacey, Grades 1-5 [email protected] or 288-5528 x108 Happy Easter! Our praying, fasting, and giving has turned to rejoicing! First Communion: Practice is on Monday, April 17th at 6:30pm in the church. Our Dress Rehearsal and Group Photo Day is Monday, April 24th, at 6:30pm in the church. One parent needs to be present during these two practices. Summer Activities: Stop by the summer table in the Gathering Space to check out all the summer activities or go to our new website and look under faith formation, grades 1-5, summer activities. Register now for Totus Tuus, which will be held June 26-30, 9:00am-2:30pm daily, $15/child or $30/

family. Virtues in Practice: Last week, we learned about Blessed Margaret of Castello and how her parents were embarrassed because she was born blind, lame, and with a hunchback. How can Margaret teach us about forgiveness? When she was sixteen years old, her parents left her at a shrine where people were miraculously cured. However, Margaret was not and her parents abandoned her again. Instead of being bitter, she decided that she should take care of herself. Even the beggars recognized her holiness and she became a Dominican sister. She forgave those who had hurt her and lived joyfully caring for the sick and visiting those in prison. By God’s grace, she even worked miracles. After she died, a cripple child was cured at the place of her burial. She was declared blessed in 1609.
