Hello church!

It hasn’t escaped my attention that very soon… November 13 to

be exact… I will be in this call for nine months. Great

expectations! Or perhaps…What to Expect When You’re

Expecting! With a call extended and accepted on January 8 the

preparations began for The Big Event. Labor started as our

Alexandria home was renovated, put on the market and SOLD on

September 19. Transition – as any woman in labor will tell you,

REALLY sucks unless you have an epidural – began with putting a

contract down on our home here in Fredericksburg and we

became “Spotsy-bound”! And finally the home-stretch –

pushing! We pushed through the moving experience – not

without a WHOLE lot of prayer from all of you – and officially

became residents and the contents arrived on October 3.

So here I am – all the family under one roof – and settling in.

Now what?

It is interesting that this personal “mini-anniversary” has come

right at the time we are celebrating the 500th anniversary of the

Reformation. We have been talking about, preparing for and

now eagerly await “The Big Event” this Sunday as we move our

worship location to join with two other local Lutheran churches

to celebrate at Dodd Auditorium on the campus of the University

of Mary Washington at 10 a.m.

So there we will all be… but the same question lingers, “now

what?”

The ELCA presiding bishop, Elizabeth Eaton, essentially asks the same question, “What about

October 32? Or another way to put it, it’s November 1, 2017, the big year is over. Now what?

A good question with an exciting answer: we’re on the way – rejoicing, reforming together! And

while some things have changes, the basis of our being has not. We are still baptized children of

God. We proclaim that we are saved! And we ask the question of how do we respond? Our

response is freedom.

Bishop Eaton writing in the latest Living Lutheran describes it this way:

“Freedom for means that in Christ we are set free for loving and serving others. Freedom is a

relationship, not a new set of activities or the demands of a new law. Luther put it this way:

“Faith, however, is a divine work in us which changes us and makes us to be born anew of God. It

kills the old Adam and makes us altogether different people, in heart and spirit and mind and

powers; and it brings with it the Holy Spirit. O, it is a living, busy, active mighty thing, this faith. It

is impossible for it not to be doing good works incessantly. … And this is the work which the Holy

Spirit performs in faith. Because of it, without compulsion, a person is ready to do good to

everyone, to serve everyone, to suffer everything, out of love and praise to God who has shown

them this grace” (Luther’s Works, 35:370-1).

Blessings,

Pastor Heidi

FAITH IN ACTION

The Faith in Action Team met on Thursday, October 12, 2017. Our

agenda included the success of the school supply project for the Minnick

Schools of Lutheran Family Services and Chancellor Elementary School.

The October Newsletter contained a thank you note from the Minnick

Schools. A thank you note from Chancellor Elementary School is printed in this Newsletter.

Resurrection Family, you did a super fine job!

Plans are already in the works for the 2017 Angel Tree Christmas Project. After the Hope

House Collection has concluded on Sunday, November 5th, (Thank you Colleen Butler and Joy

Bushman!), the Angel Tree Project will start with the collection of nonperishable food items at

the Baobab Tree in the Narthex. This will continue until Sunday, December 10th at which time

the food boxes will be packed on Thursday, December 14th. All members are invited to help

with this packing project. Cardboard boxes were wrapped with Christmas paper at the end of

our last meeting to be used for food items by Angel Tree Families. A suggested Holiday Food

Collection List is printed below this article.

I have already spoken with Erica Saber at Chancellor Elementary School. The children’s tags

for the Angel Tree Gifts will be ready for me to pick-up at the school on November 15th. The

Angel Tree will hopefully be in the Narthex on Sunday, November 19th.

Angel Tree instructions remain the same as years in the past. *Select a tag from the Angel

Tree. The tag will become the package tag for the gift with the vital identification number.

*Please put your name and telephone number on the attached index card and place the card in

the index card basket. *Above all, have a good time shopping for this gift and place it under the

Angel Tree. ***ALL GIFTS NEED TO BE AT THE CHURCH BY SUNDAY, DECEMBER 10TH ***

In all of these projects, we are doing the work of the true Christmas Gift, the Christ Child.

If you have any questions, please contact me.

Fall Blessings, Gene Ernst

Music News

Dear RLC Family, October has been filled with excitement and enthusiasm for me these past few weeks. Lots of energy has been flowing through our church with so many musical events. After our September Oktoberfest sing-along event, we kicked off the month of October with our Classical Music Sunday and shared music in tribute to the great masters of the classical era.

The Broadway Night of Talent was the following weekend and was a really enjoyable evening of exchanging musical performances with a variety of Broadway hits from different decades. I hope those of you that attended our talent show had fun and were entertained by the multi-generational group of singers and instrumentalists that shared their amazing talent.

Thank you to our narrator and video/sound technician for sharing your talents that helped to make our Broadway Night a huge success!! I would also like to thank all of the choir members who traveled to Dodd auditorium at UMW to help celebrate our 500th Anniversary service. I am so touched by your support and unwavering commitment to our music ministry. Each time we gather for choir rehearsal or share a worship service together, I am reminded of our mission to reach out and share the everlasting love of Christ with others. I hope you are enjoying this beautiful fall weather and may you all have peace and joy in your hearts as we prepare for this new season. Love, Amy

RLC Council Minutes for October 24, 2017

Treasurer’s Report:

Budget Sheet

Giving is $3500 less a month than expenses. Typically giving picks up during the fall and into Christmas. Our giving is less than our expenses. This is the driving need for refinancing the mortgages to reduce our costs. During the refinancing consideration process there will be three different companies investigated.

Offering from Reformation Sunday – Three options: members can take green

envelopes and use them – those will come to RLC, VANCO which automatically

comes to RLC or any loose cash that is collected will go to Micah Ministries

Audit for 2016-2017. Stu Moulton is the audit committee. He received the audits

from the past few years. He will also be looking into who in the congregation might

be able to help with the audit (review of records). He may have to look into the

community for help with this procedure.

Team Reports

Team captains met last week.

Signage on front of church delayed again because of death in the family of the

company. No date has been reset at this time.

Personnel – looking into a nursery caregiver – looking into Germanna for

possibilities.

Team Liaisons - All teams have council liaison

RLS – asked for and received permission to have an Epiphany tree to ask for

donations of school supplies

Old Business

Youth Activity Director Position – Youth Committee is reforming. Seeking parents to

repopulate the committee. Then we will discern who will chair the committee. Re-

evaluating the needs.

Follow up on the “State of the Church” meeting 10/22/17. Support from the

members for the overall presentation. Attached to the minutes is a copy of the

Timeline for RLC Facelift 2017. We will be meeting on November 2, 2017 at
