FIRST READING Isaiah 49:1-7

A A reading from Isaiah

1Listen to me, O coastlands,

pay attention, you peoples from far away! The LORD called me before I was born, while I was in my mother’s womb he named me.

2He made my mouth like a sharp sword,

in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me a polished arrow, in his quiver he hid me away.

3And he said to me, “You are my servant,

Israel, in whom I will be glorified.”

4But I said, “I have labored in vain,

I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet surely my cause is with the LORD, and my reward with my God.”

5And now the LORD says, who formed me in the womb to be his servant,

to bring Jacob back to him, and that Israel might be gathered to him, for I am honored in the sight of the LORD, and my God has become my strength—

6he says, “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant

to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the survivors of Israel; I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.”

7Thus says the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One,

to one deeply despised, abhorred by the nations, the slave of rulers, “Kings shall see and stand up, princes, and they shall prostrate themselves, because of the LORD, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.”

A Word of God, Word of life. C Thanks be to God.

1Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes, 2To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours: 3Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 4I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, 5for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind—6just as the testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you—7so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. 8He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

THE GOSPEL John 1:29-42

P The Holy Gospel according to St. John C Glory to you, O Lord. 29

[John the Baptist] saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

30This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man

who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’ 31

I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel.”

32And John

testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33

I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

34And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.”

35The next

day John again was standing with two of his disciples, 36

and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, “Look, here is the Lamb of God!”

37The two disciples heard him say this,

and they followed Jesus. 38

When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?”

39He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where

he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon.

40One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon

Peter’s brother. 41

He first found his brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated Anointed).

42He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him

and said, “You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).

BAPTISM (11:00)

P God, who is rich in mercy and love, gives us a new birth into a living hope through the sacrament of baptism. By water and the Word God delivers us from sin and death and raises us to new life in Jesus Christ. We are united with all the baptized in the one body of Christ, anointed with the gift of the Holy Spirit, and joined in God's mission for the life of the world. Called by the Holy Spirit, trusting in the grace and love of God, do you desire to have your child baptized into Christ?

Parents and Godparents: We do.

P As you bring Kaylyn to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities: to live with her among God's faithful people, bring her to the word of God and the holy supper, teach her the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, place in her hands the holy scriptures, and nurture her in faith and prayer, so that your child may learn to trust God, proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and work for justice and peace.

Do you promise to help your child grow in the Christian faith and life? Parents and Godparents: We do.

P People of God, do you promise to support Kaylyn and pray for her in her new life in Christ?

C We do.

P Do you believe in God the Father? C I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

P Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? C I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the

Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

P Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? C I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the

forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

P Kaylyn Alana Frith, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

P Let us pray. We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give your daughters and sons new birth, cleanse them from sin, and raise them to eternal life. Sustain Kaylyn with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever.

C Amen.

P Kaylyn, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever.

C Amen.

O living Breath of God, wind at the beginning upon the waters; O living Breath of God, bearing the creation to wondrous birth;

Refrain Come now, and fill our spirits; pour out your gifts abundant. O living Breath of God, Holy Spirit, breathe in us as we pray.

OFFERING PRAYER P Merciful God, C receive the gifts we bring, ourselves, our time, and our possessions. Through this meal unite us as your body, shining with the light of your justice and mercy; for the sake of him who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Lift up your hearts. C We lift them to the Lord. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C It is right to give our thanks and praise

P In your Son, Christ Jesus, your eternal light has dawned upon our darkness, and by his death and resurrection you reveal your glory to every nation. And so with the Church on earth, with Simeon and Anna, and the whole company of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

CONGREGATIONAL SONG Holy, Holy, Holy

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

P On the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the

Lord’s death until he comes. (Congregation sings refrain)

In this bread there is healing, in this cup is life forever. In this moment, by the Spirit, Christ is with us here.

P Make us bold, O merciful God, to address you as our Abba as we pray: (Abba is an intimate word used by Jesus to address his Father – as we might say, Daddy)

LORD'S PRAYER

C Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen

INVITATION TO COMMUNION

P We who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. Come. Be filled with light and life.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION A Shepherding God, C We give you thanks that you have gathered your scattered flock again this day, feeding us richly with the food of Paradise. Accompany us as we serve you all the days of our lives, and gather us with the saints in the day of our death; through Jesus Christ, our Redeemer and Lord. Amen.

SENDING OF COMMUNION VISITORS A Gracious God, you took the form of a servant, offering yourself as food, comfort, and strength to a sick and hurting world. Anoint with a servant heart those who take your word and sacrament to our sisters and brothers who are sick, homebound or imprisoned. Grant grace, mercy, healing, and hope to those who feast on your body and blood and receive your words of new life. May we all recognize that we have a place and a home in the body of our Lord Jesus Christ. C Amen.

Readings for next Sunday, January 22, 2017 Third Sunday after Epiphany

INTRODUCTION Jesus begins his public ministry by calling fishers to leave their nets and follow him. In Jesus the kingdom of God has come near. We who have walked in darkness have seen a great light. We see this light most profoundly in the cross—as God suffers with us and all who are oppressed by sickness, sin, or evil. Light dawns for us as we gather around the word, the font, and the holy table. We are then sent to share the good news that others may be “caught” in the net of God’s grace and mercy.

We invite you to read these texts as you prepare for next Sunday’s worship.

Isaiah 9:1-4 1 Corinthians 1:10-18 Matthew 4:12-23

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK:

Martin Luther King Jr., renewer of society, martyr, died 1968 Sunday, January 15, 2017 An American prophet of justice among races and nations, King was an eloquent preacher, a leader of the nonviolent resistance to race-segregated society, and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. Born on this date, he was assassinated on April 4, 1968. Antony of Egypt, renewer of the church, died around 356 Tuesday, January 17, 2017 One of the earliest of the Egyptian desert fathers, Antony gave away his sizeable inheritance and became a hermit. Later he became leader of a group of monks who devoted themselves to prayer, worship, and labor. Pachomius, renewer of the church, died 346 Tuesday, January 17, 2017 Born in Egypt, Pachomius became a Christian while a soldier. He became a hermit (a solitary monk) and organized others into a religious community. His rule for monasteries influenced later ones in both the Eastern and Western churches. Confession of Peter Wednesday, January 18, 2017 Today the church remembers the apostle Peter's great acknowledgement of Jesus as "the Christ, the Son of the living God." This festival serves as a fitting beginning to the week in which we particularly pray that all Christians might be united in faith and witness. Henry, Bishop of Uppsala, martyr, died 1156 Thursday, January 19, 2017 When Erik, King of Sweden, determined to invade Finland for the purpose of converting the people there to Christianity, Henry went with him. Henry is recognized as the patron saint of Finland.
