2 JUNE 2015 · ROOM TO BREATHE
Step through the front door of Mary Portas’ airy mid-Victorian house in the desirable NW1 area of London and you’re instantly struck by a sense of light, colour, space and just a hint of theatricality. It’s a perfect reflection of Portas herself, who with her trademark personal style has become one of the UK’s most recognisable and respected retail experts.
A media commentator, presenter of popular TV series on consumerism, director of her eponymous retail and brand communications agency and a government retail strategy adviser, Portas’ influence informs popular and political culture in a way few other professionals in her field have achieved. The success of her memoir Shop Girl – published earlier this year by Penguin Random House and currently riding high on the Sunday Times best-seller list – has meant a constant round of promotional tours in Britain and abroad, adding even more speed to an already frenetic professional life. Her personal environment, then, is an important antidote.
‘Home is where I rest – and that’s why it’s so important that  you get the interior right. It’s where I am most at peace; me and my little brood. It is the most personal expression of who I am. Home has to make your heart sing creatively,’ she explains. ‘I think about creating a home very carefully and it gives me huge joy. I love choosing the textures, the colours – and there are lots of splashes of colour here. You have to live with the space. In that sense it’s not so different from dressing a window in a retail context: it has to breathe.’
Despite making her name as a window dresser for leading department stores, Portas takes her interiors lead less from fashion than from classic cinema: ‘When it came to choosing shades of paint, my inspiration was Parisian apartments. I watched a whole string of French movies to get the right colours for the walls upstairs, and downstairs I went more Alfred Hitchcock – that cool ’50s chic. But I do have to do things slowly to create exactly the look I want.’
‘It’s a welcoming extended family house and that’s been part of its history,’ continues Portas, who has two children from her 14-year marriage to Unilever executive Graham Portas and now lives with her wife Melanie Rickey and son Horatio. ‘It was the childhood home of Boris Johnson [London mayor] and I bought it from Simon Jenkins [former editor of The Times] but there’s still a bit of theatre. I really wanted that sense of glamour when you arrive in the hallway. It’s not exactly understated!
‘I have very little that’s been handed down from the family,’ she adds, ‘but memories are very important to me. Under my bed I keep a box of them. I’m tough about throwing out clothes but not memories. I want to know the story of an object and its heritage – and that’s why I like good design. That was something my father instilled in me. An uncle of mine had an old Heals writing desk and you felt that great design was at the heart of that piece of furniture. My daughter’s inherited that instinct for design and we love looking out for home stuff – the tactility of it and the joy of discovery.’
Portas describes herself as ‘so anti-minimalist!’ but her home speaks to a decidedly modernist, British design-led aesthetic. Two of her prize possessions are works by Grayson Perry, the Turner Prize-winning artist.
‘I’m a huge Grayson fan,’ she enthuses. ‘He’s an artist, a philosopher, a sociologist and a bit of a genius. The embroidery banner hanging over my fireplace is an image of five men and women from the Newtownards Road area of Belfast. It was part of his project exploring British identity. My Dad was a Protestant from Northern Ireland who married my Catholic mum so this piece speaks to me in a very personal way.’
It’s a reflection of Portas’ professional determination to champion contemporary and emerging artists, something that ‘has always been important to me’: ‘When I was creative director of Harvey Nichols, I gave Thomas Heatherwick one of his first high-profile commissions to create a window display in 1997 – and I’ve often worked with other students from the Royal College of Art. I get excited by young talents because they care so much – and commissioning work is something that feels very special. I try to do it as much as I possibly can.’
Heatherwick’s Harvey Nichols intervention led to a major advertising industry award for the man who went on to achieve global acclaim for his Cauldron design at the London 2012 Olympics. It also cemented Portas’ reputation in the 1990s as one of the best creative minds in the retail business. Portas is credited with turning the stolidly traditional institution – ‘like a Rolls-Royce: classic, comfortable and reassuringly expensive and the store of choice for the grandes dames of Knightsbridge’, as she describes it in her memoir – into a leading modern fashion brand.
Portas also secured the department store massive publicity in the BBC’s anarchic hit comedy  Absolutely Fabulous, after promising its writer and lead actor Jennifer Saunders free access for research in exchange for frequent references in the show. The series went on to become a cult comedy classic. The store’s owners were suitably impressed and by the age of 30 Portas had joined the board.
By 1997 she’d left to set up her own agency, Yellowdoor, working with many of the biggest names in luxury and high-street retail – from Louis Vuitton, Swarovski, Dunhill and Habitat to Mercedes-Benz (which remains a client today). She’s also reinvigorated the high-street charity shop, becoming a brand ambassador for Save the Children in the process. In January 2013, capitalising on her personal brand, she relaunched her agency as Portas, a multi-channel strategy and communications business with a focus on customer behaviour.
‘What’s happening today is that we are coming back to creating tactile experiences for consumers,’ she explains. ‘Because of the growth of the internet, we have to have real reasons to go out and shop. You only have to look at a department store such as Selfridge’s: people go there because it’s about social interaction. That’s why service and knowledge are so important.’
ROOM TO BREATHE
ROOM TO BREATHE · 2 JUNE 2015
It’s also a reason why Portas is a fan of Christie’s upcoming Buy or Bid sale, The Art People’s second foray into a fixed price retail proposition following a successful trial in December 2014.
‘I think Buy or Bid is a fantastic idea,’ Portas enthuses. ‘I’d never have thought of coming to Christie’s just to “buy” something. The idea of walking in off the street would have been a little intimidating – but trust is huge in any retail context today and Christie’s has honest expertise. It’s an historic and trusted brand where people really understand and care. That’s very special – and really important.
‘One of the ironies of my professional life is that I’m so restricted on time to actually shop so I love going to bed with home interiors magazines. I guess I’ll be adding Christie’s Interiors magazine and newspaper to the list now.’
Mary Portas chooses her highlights from Christie’s Buy or Bid
sale on p. 80. Her memoir Shop Girl is available at all leading
bookstores and online.

gold mounted boxes are nearly all marked or can be
attributed to the Parisian jewellery house Chaumet.
In the 1980s, René Morin, the artistic director, used
his varied influences to promote the resurgence of
precious objects alongside the jewellery the company
was famous for. Having joined Chaumet in 1962, Morin
created a bull’s head from a block of lapis lazuli, and it
is likely these boxes were produced in a similar vein for
private collector. Some applied with jewelled mounts
or veneered in sumptuous and unusual agates and
jaspers, these boxes are works of art in their own right.
