The Louisiana Purchase
- Napoleon turned the Louisiana Territory over for a couple reasons:
1. America was determined to keep the New Orleans port open
2. the Haitian revolt in Hispaniola by Toussaint L’Ouverture weakened Napoleon’s desire for a colony in America
3. France needed the money to fund their war with England
- Jefferson obtained the Louisiana Purchase for $15,000,000 on April 30, 1803, doubling the size of the United States!!!
