Whom do you trust?

Prof. Mathew P. Thomas, Editor

The most helpless creature in this world is a new born baby. Heenters in this sin-ridden earth with a loud cry. His first breath is

the beginning of death. When he goes from this world, peoplearound him cry. His life period is between two cries. He is living inbetween changing things and unchanging things. “We are notconditioned animals that act automatically and unthinkingly inprogrammed response” says a psychologist. Man’s destiny isdependant on whom he trusts. There are only three unchangingproblems, sin, sorrow and death, in this changing world.

Man is trying to overcome these by seeking the pleasures offeredby the villain of this world about whom Bible gives insight. He isoffering positions, possession and popularity through his politics.“Bible” means “Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth.” T heBible has one hero, His name is Jesus, one villain that is Satan, oneproblem ‘sin’ which gives sorrow and death; one solution, that issalvation. That is what Bible is all about. Satan is holding Death inhis hands. But the Hero, Jesus is holding Eternal Life. Man’s destinydepends on these two persons.

Satan is helping people to sin through the pleasures of this worldwhich lead to eternal destruction. But Jesus says “you have tobelieve in a person ie, ‘me’. Believe is a plan ie, “I am the way, thetruth and life.” Believe in a place ie, “I am going to prepare a placefor you.” Believe in a promise,- “when your work here on earth isdone I will come and collect to the eternal, explicit pleasure, placedat the right hand side of God.”

Spiritual food from Hosea

The father-heart of Hosea was ever pleading with God’sway ward people to return; to repent of their backsliding.

Invitation after invitation was given graciously, yet when oneconsiders the awfulness of Israel’s sins as listed in this Book,we stand amazed at God’s gracious call to return. But this isjust like His great love, and the invitation to all who havebackslidden is a simple one:

Come and let us return unto the Lord (6:1)

We have wandered far from Him, in our thoughts, in ourdesires, and in our pursuits. We have been running after otherlovers, and have set up idols in our hearts. Our conduct hasbeen sinful and the effect most injurious to ourselves. Comethen! And let us return unto the Lord. He is willing to receiveus. He will kindly pardon us. ‘If we confess our sins, He isfaithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us fromall unrighteousness. Let us fall at His feet and frankly confessour folly. Let us endeavour to turn our thoughts, desires, andaffections back to Him again. Especially, let us seek fromHim the Spirit of grace and supplication, for without His holyoperations there will be no godly sorrow, no hatred for sin,no self-abhorrence, no faith in His promise or restoration ofthe joys of His salvation. We must return or our sin will beaggravated. We must return or our misery will deepen. Let usthen at once, without any delay, return, approach His throneof grace and plead His past mercies, plead His glorious Name, and plead the Saviour’s blood. Our pleading will not be invain.

Making theRight Choice

Dr. Paulson Pulikottil

Jesus’ question in Mark 10:51 “What do youwant me to do for you?” is baffling. Jesus

knows everything, moreover the man who iscrying to him is obviously blind and needs healing. Why then this question; Jesus cannot be thatdumb!

The blind beggar in Jericho (Mark 10:46-52)was engaged in something demeaning. His nameis mentioned in the Bible as Bartimaeus, whichmeans son of honor. Though “a son of honor” hewas doing the most dishonorable profession ofbegging in the city of Jericho. When Jesus methim he was begging. His style of begging (likeall beggars do) is to catch people’s attention bycrying loud “have mercy on me” so that they canthrow a coin in to his bowl.

He did the same thing when Jesus passed byin the company of a large crowd. This time he didnot just cry “have mercy on me” but was morespecific because his plea was aimed at Jesus andnot the crowd. He cries, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

However, it is the plea of a beggar. That ishow the crowd who rebuked him to keep quiettook it. He should not nag Jesus for a coin! Nobeggar should bother Jesus, he has greater thingsto attend to! However, Jesus stopped, knowingthat in that plea there is something more than abeggar’s longing for a coin.

The crowd (who earlier tried to stop him) now

encouraged him to walk towards Jesus saying“cheer up! On your feet! He is calling you.”Probably, they might have thought that Jesus isgoing to give him a considerable amount.

The possibilities were limited: a donation to abeggar and nothing more. That’s all that we canthink of at the moment. Even Bartimaeu's cry wasambiguous. That’s what makes Jesus ask himspecifically: “what do you want me to do for you?”That is to ask, “Do you want a coin, anotherdonation?” or something else. The beggar’sanswer was specific: “Rabbi, I want to see”. Jesuscan do both, he can toss a coin into the beggar’sbowl. Any one who has coin to give away can dothat. However, Jesus can also do something else;that is to deal with his problem at its root.

Jesus demands us always to make that choice.Do we want Jesus to deal with our immediate, felt needs alone, or work at the root of ourproblems. A coin or two that Jesus could toss into his bowl may make him happy for a day. However, dealing with his blindness, the reasonfor being a beggar will change his stigma of abeggar and bring the honor back to him.Bartimaues made the wise choice and challengesus to make a wise choice in our lives too. Jesusposes the question to us because we are the oneswho should make that choice.

The case of a love addictionWhen I say love addiction, it refers to the human behavior in which people become addicted

to the feeling of being in love! Like other addictions (drugs, alcohol, gambling, sex, work etc), the dependency to a person (their object- drug of choice) allows love addicts to feelalive - a sense of purpose - and to gain a sense of meaning and self worth in the world: they aredriven by a fantasy hope that the drug of choice - a person - will complete them.

We see around us a lot of teenagers and youths into this addiction. They get addicted to‘being in a relationship’ all the time, irrespective of the number of relationships they mayhave to jump into to remain so! They get addicted to what they derive inside these relationships. It definitely is the sex that keeps them in it but it also is about the intoxicating feelings, thecare, the sense of belonging, lack of self esteem, peer pressure or even having someone to talkto about anything under the sun that keeps them hooked to such relationships! However, it’sthe insecurities and sense of inadequacy that primarily triggers such an addiction in youngpeople. The movies and media celebrate such behaviors and have almost immortalized suchstories, spreading the phenomenon to a wider population.

It seemed that my “protégé preferito” was in this above category of people too! It was justa few months back that I had helped her get out of a relationship mess and all had seemedwell! However I admit that I couldn’t get her into a place of immunity from her real predicamentand I realized it when I got the message one early morning. We got busy in our own worldsand now it seemed the damage had been done!

Devanshi was crying and she sounded devastated. Since I had some previous engagementsduring the day, we decided to meet up in the evening at Soul Café. Take 28!

Devanshi: How can anyone make the same mistakes again and again!Me: What happened now!Devanshi: After you helped me last time, things were going really fine for me for a while.

I made a new friend, Ratul and he helped me so much! He continued the good work that youstarted and helped me get over my previous relationship! He helped me heal fast. He understoodme, stood by me and also helped me in all that I needed his help with. I told him everythingabout me and he never said a word to condemn me!

Me: If I remember it right, I did advise you to stay away from any emotional entanglementsand relationships till you were through with your graduation! Didn’t I?

Devanshi: Yeah you did. But Ratul was so good! He was too good for me to ignore! Hewas so perfect. He was the guy for me!

Me: So now what has happened that you need my help!Devanshi: Well my ex-boyfriend called me yesterday and Ratul was there when he called.

I was really hard on him and Ratul stood by me all the time. The bugger was mouthing threats

Page 9: C.F. February 2012 · then at once, without any delay, return, approach His throne of grace and plead His past mercies, plead His glorious Name, and plead the Saviour’s blood. Our

and abuses and we faced his attacks together!Since he threatened to keep troubling meunceasingly, I told about his troubling me on thephone to my father, who in turn called him back, bashed him up verbally and closed the issue!

Me: Good for you! I still don’t understandwhat’s the issue? Where do I figure in?

Devanshi: Well Ratul called me up yesterdaynight and strangely and to my utter shock anddisbelief, he said that he has decided to call it quits. He said that he could not go onward in ourrelationship because he never expected suchfracas!

Me: Oh okay! I think this was perhapsexpected.

Devanshi: How could he! How could he justclose his eyes to all that we have shared justbecause of a phone call and that too, a phone call, which revealed nothing new that he already didn’tknow about!

Me: What all have you shared! Don’t tell methat you both got physically involved too!

Devanshi: Yeah we did! Of all the experiencesI have ever had in relationships, this guy has beenthe best! I just couldn’t stop at just talking! Andthen isn’t attraction and attachment a basic needlike food and water! It made me complete in asense.

Me: Now what do you want me to do! Howam I to help you when you don’t help yourself!

Devanshi: I don’t want to remain in anyrelationship. I don’t want all these complications. It is so stressful and devastating. Help me get outof this rot! Please! I have just two more months tomy final exams and I am hit so badly now!

Me: Now that you have seen his true colors, you want to make amends!

Devanshi: I haven’t slept the whole night. Idon’t have the energy to pull on like this. I stilldon’t understand how anyone can do so! (Startscrying)

Me: Maybe all the help he did all the time wasbecause he could never say a “no”!

Devanshi: Why! Why could he not say a “no”?Would have I strangled him earlier!

Me: Maybe yes! Maybe not! But generally, people who are afraid that they might never makeit into a relationship end up saying “yes” to

everything! They want to get connected but theydon’t have the initiative or the energy to make arelation click, the energy that a person like youmight bring along! Tell me one thing. Were youthe one always bringing in the energy into therelationship? Were you the one initiating theintimacy!

Devanshi: Well now that you ask, I think Iwas always the one taking the lead. He was happyresponding to me! He never said a “no”!? So whatcan we make out of that!

Me: People like him are called the “avoidant”.They are in it for the energy and enthusiasm thatpeople like you bring into the relationship! Theyare people with low self esteem and protectthemselves behind high emotional walls thinkingthat no one will love, accept or value them as theyare. So they close themselves off and loathe toomuch intimacy.

Devanshi: And what are people like me called!Me: Don’t feel offended. People like you are

called “love addicts”.Devanshi: What!!? I have heard of alcohol

addiction, drug addiction, porn addiction. Whatis love addiction! Tell me that you just made it upright now!

Me: Wish that were true. Love addicts don’trealize that they are addicted to love. But theirobsession with their love interest gives them away. And when you show that obsession over multiplerelationships, it is proof that an addiction is in!

Devanshi: So what’s wrong with theobsession?

Me: Well a lot of things because the cycle onlybegins at the obsession. First there is an obsessionabout hunting for a love interest. Once there isrecruitment, then there is an obsession about therecruited individual!

Devanshi: I can’t digest the terms you justused! Hunting? Recruitment?

Me: Well, just try to think a little into yourpast. When you look back at the beginning of yourrelationship with Ratul or for that matter anyone, you will notice a time when you were unable tofocus on anything, your judgment was impairedand there were frequent bouts of depression likesymptoms. The mind was always making plots tohunt for a candidate who could culminate your

Page 10: C.F. February 2012 · then at once, without any delay, return, approach His throne of grace and plead His past mercies, plead His glorious Name, and plead the Saviour’s blood. Our

obsession! Think about how it was when therecruitment was done! What a sense ofgratification settled into your mind for a timebeing! The intoxication with the feelings, the senseof security and safety, the satisfaction of beingwanted and loved!

Devanshi: It definitely was great. I think it wasgreat till yesterday, till the phone call came. I don’tagree with the “loathing the intimacy” part! Weshared great chemistry!

Me: The “love addict” will often mistakeintensity for intimacy! They mistake sex for love!In fact the love addict enters the relationship indesperation and with a haze of fantasy andtherefore cannot accept any deficiency in therecruitment. However, since both the parties areclosed “deep within”, the relationship will fallapart very soon!

Devanshi: I will never do anything to let itfall apart!

Me: Yes, perhaps you are right. You will not.The avoidant however will. Since they are alreadyemotionally closed individuals, the high energyfrom the addict’s side will get to them. They wantthe connection, not the entanglements! They soonstart distancing!

Devanshi: I just hope that you are not right! Ithink what Ratul told me yesterday soundedexactly like, “I hate the entanglement and thecomplications!”

Me: Well, you have one reason to cheer up. Idon’t think that the last phone call between youboth has happened! A sense of guilt or the fear ofbeing left alone all of a sudden will make himcome back! You guys have only got into a cycleof abandonment and returning till he or you findsan alternate partner or recourse! Sometimesavoidants end up in addictive behaviors and thelove addicts with self-destructive or revengefulbehaviors!

Devanshi: Now you are scaring me! I came toyou for help! I have my exams coming up andthis has totally crushed me! And now you aretelling me all these things!

Me: I am not making up a story here. Thesethings are not unique to you. These are happeningto young people all around. In the name of loveand romance, they are getting into a cycle which

doesn’t end at gratification. After a while, sincethe reasons behind resorting to the relationshipswere not the people, but their own deeper needs, guilt comes in. Following the guilt is thejustifications!

Devanshi: Can you explain that part?Me: Justifications? “What I did wasn’t so

bad?”, “Everyone does it”, “It was normal”, “Itwas understandable!” “But I needed it. I deservedit. Besides, I really had no choice. It’s just the wayI am. I was only doing what comes naturally tome.” Have you heard such dialogues in your ownmind? Have you used phrases such as these?

Devanshi: Not right now! But yeah certainlywith my ex-boyfriend! I have gone through a roughpatch. I have said similar things and much more!

Me: So then did you not blame him for all therot that your relationship had finally got into? Thenafter the blame came the shame and then thegloom! The gloom and the pattern ofdisappointment that comes with relationshipbreak-up made fear and dependency the residentemotions inside of you! And that’s when Mr.Ratulwalks into your life!

Devanshi: I admit that it was perhaps almoston those lines!

Me: Let me tell you, you are already lined upfor a repeat of it! You will go through the samesequence of events over the next few months withRatul, unless of course you take a firm decisionto salvage yourself out of this mess!

Devanshi: I am not sure if I can make acommitment that strong. Remember that I didmake promises to myself and to you when I walkedout of the previous relationship but now see whereI have brought myself again! (Brief silence)

So you are sure that I have an addiction?! Howcan I get out of it! I really don’t have the mentalgrit to keep going through this again and again! Idon’t want to. The pain now is greater than thepain there was in the beginning!

Me: The first step involves abstaining fromgetting into such relationship patterns andaddictive behaviors. Once you abstain, with propersupport, you will be able to see the underlyingcauses behind the out-of-control thoughts andbehaviors.

Devanshi: So will you support me to see the

Page 11: C.F. February 2012 · then at once, without any delay, return, approach His throne of grace and plead His past mercies, plead His glorious Name, and plead the Saviour’s blood. Our

February 2012 11.COLLEGIATE FISHERMAN

problems properly?Me: The really ‘proper support’ would mean a

group based program like the ‘AlcoholicsAnonymous’ wherein you will be able to reduceshame and break secrecy and denial around youraddiction!

Devanshi: So are you saying you can’t help!Me: Definitely I know one more place wherein

you can break such addictions. It’s the church!Devanshi: Church! How can a church help me

with my break-up!Me: Like how Noah’s Ark was not the best place

in the world at his time, but it was the safest place, similarly, the church I think is a safe haven for a lotof people who actually run away from it!

Devanshi: It doesn’t excite me too much but tellme more!

Me: For most people, a church is a place whereone goes either for a marriage or for a funeral! However, the church is much more resourceful, especially in such support. A proper church and itsleaders will guide you first of all to get a properperspective of life, relationships and will also makeyou understand what ‘true love’ is!

Devanshi: To get help for my ‘love addiction’,don’t I have to go to a place that has nothing to dowith that word – ‘love’!

Me: Just like it’s the wrong drug that causes theaddiction and the wrong dosage of alcohol that doesthe same too, it’s the wrong relationship and thewrong kind and dosage of love that messes a personup! Love definitely is our basic need like food andwater and therefore, it’s important to understand anddefine it properly.

Devanshi: What understanding of love have yougot from the church!

Me: I opened the Bible and read out: “Love ispatient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does notboast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, and it keeps norecord of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil butrejoices with the truth. It always protects, alwaystrusts, always hopes, and always perseveres. Lovenever fails.”

Devanshi: All theory and philosophy. It’s notthere in the real world.

Me: True. Let me make it more incredible! Truelove is sacrificial, providing, protecting, sanctifying

and rewarding. True love is more about giving thanabout receiving!

Devanshi: There is no one who can live up tosuch a love! It is impossible!

Me: That is not true. I found one person whoshows it in history. His story stands tall for all toexamine and see. It’s the man – Jesus Christ! Helived an impeccable life and then gave it up for thesake of saving the world!

Devanshi: Oh come on! How can his death saveme! Firstly, he came so many centuries ago. Moreover, just because some innocent man waskilled doesn’t mean he died for me!

Me: I agree. But Jesus Christ was no ordinaryman. He was God intervening in history!

Devanshi: Why would God want to intervenein history!? Why would he die a death as that?

Me: For that you need to understand where weall came from, where are we all going, what we aredoing here and why the question of good and evil! Ifthere is something that can give an acceptable replyto all four of the above questions, we can consider itas a possible guide to help us understand about lifeand the decisions we need to make!

Devanshi: And you vouch for the Bible becauseit provides the answers to those questions? Maybewe should meet again for it! I will do my ownsearching for some group therapy happening aroundto help me get out of this mess but in the meanwhileI don’t mind thinking with you about possibleanswers to questions that the world doesn’t agreeabout!

Devanshi was right. The world doesn’t agreeabout the answers it has arrived at or heard for thesefour elementary questions. But does that mean thatall answers are wrong. The answer is out there. It’sup to us to seek and find. Also, it’s noteworthy that,in all the relationships that we get into, we are alsotrying to fill a place inside of us that is insatiable!Perhaps it’s a vacuum that God has reserved forhimself. A love that only God can give! Love is sucha supreme emotion, that in its true sense, it has to befrom a God! Who else then to look forward to, tounderstand it better? In case of Devanshi, though itsounds as if reached a hurried conclusion about “loveaddiction”, since I know the complete history, I knowit’s true. God help her and everyone else who isstruggling with this addiction!

Guidance from the HolySpirit: Do we use thisHelpline anymore?

Pr. Shibu Cherian

1. Evidence from Personal Life Experiences:It is possible that anyone can argue differently

from all the evidences that I have presented so far. However, no one can argue the authenticity of thebaptism of the Holy Spirit in my life with the evidenceof speaking with other tongues and the proven factthat God has been baptizing so many believersthroughout history after the first century.

Let me start with my own example. From themoment I received Christ as my personal savior onDecember 31st, 1977, I became very sensitive toeverything that was happening in and around me. Iwas no longer the same person as before. I had areal peace within my heart and I knew that everythingwas all right and God will take care of me. Also, Ihad a real joy within me, and I knew that Jesus wasmy Lord and Savior and He dwelled within me. Ialso realized that my name has been written in the“BOOK OF LIFE”, and I do not have to fear aboutgoing to hell any more. Also, Jesus through HisBlood that He shed for me at the Cross-of Calvaryhas wiped away all my sins, which are forever“trashed” out. My life as a child of God became realto me. Never again did I desire to do the secret sinsthat I had committed before, as now I was a child ofGod. Everything I did was real and I was not actingas a hypocrite any longer. I had a genuine love forothers now and my entire outlook changed. I realizedthat there are only two kinds of people in the world:those who are God’s children and are going to heavenafter they die, and those who are going after worldlypleasures and will go to hell after they die. I knewthat I was enrolled in the first group. I started reading

the Bible daily from that day onward, and wanted toknow what God wanted to speak to me daily. I startedspending time in prayer daily, as I needed tocommunicate with my Heavenly father and tell himeverything that was happening in my life. I startedgoing to church during the weekdays also, as I felt areal need to be in fellowship with my church family.I started “witnessing” to my friends regarding whathad happened, and how God has changed everythingin my life. I obeyed the Lord in water baptism onNovember 9, 1980, but I had to wait for two moreyears before I received the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

On Saturday, December 24, 1982 at 10:30 in themorning, the Lord gloriously baptized me in the HolySpirit in a small meeting conducted by an old Chineselady called Margaret Unn. She told all the believersgathered in the room (close to 25 people, both menand women) to confess our sins to God and getcleansed by the blood of Jesus. The reason is thatGod was looking for holy vessels to empower. Afterwe spent some time confessing our sins, she told usto look to the cross and start worshiping God throughrepeating only one word “Hallelujah”. This is aheavenly prayer language that glorifies Godintimately. As we were all engrossed in worshippingfocusing on the cross, suddenly I felt the power ofGod hit me. I felt that force trying to take controlover my vocal chords as I started to speak wordsthat I never knew before. The reality of my baptismin the Holy Spirit was that everyone present in theroom were baptized at the same time as I was – andsome even started prophesying as recorded in Acts19:1-7. to worship God in both known and unknownlanguages of the Holy Spirit as per His guidance. Ichallenge anyone to dispute my testimony and tellme that there is no such thing as the Holy Spiritbaptism and speaking in other tongues! I confessand affirm that Jesus Christ is the Son of God whohas taken a body of flesh to redeem humankind. Asmentioned by Apostle John: “By this you know theSpirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that JesusChrist has come in the flesh is of God.” (1 John 4:2)

The following extract from the August 1981Assemblies of God Position Paper regarding thebaptism in the Holy Spirit serves as a good summaryfor what I believe: “The Baptism is the crisisexperience which introduces the believer to theprocess experience of living a Spirit-filled life. Theexpression initial physical evidence of the Baptismrefers to the first outward sign that the Holy Spirithas come in filling power…While speaking intongues has initial evidential value, it is designedby God to be much more than evidence of a pastexperience. It also continues to bring enrichment tothe individual believer in personal devotions and tothe congregation when accompanied by theinterpretation of tongues…The ability is not achievedthrough a heightened emotional state or through therepetition of words or phrases. It is not the result ofimitating the sounds made by others…The believerspeaks by the supernatural and motivational powerof the Spirit.”

The Holy Spirit Baptism is still relevant todayOur early historical Christian fathers like Ignatius

(AD 98-117), Justin Martyr (AD 100-165), Tertullian(AD 160-215), Eusebius (265-339), and Augustine(AD 354-430) have shown the evidence of the HolySpirit baptism in their lives. The 5th century ChurchFather, Augustine of Hippo, was very insightful aboutthe beliefs held by the early church regardingspeaking in tongues and supported this view. Fromhis comments about Acts 8:17-19, it was hisassumption that Simon must have seen theSamaritans speaking in tongues as he wrote: “Westill do what the apostles did when they laid handson the Samaritans and called down the Holy Spiriton them by laying on of hands. It is expected thatnew converts should speak with new tongues.”

According to Pentecostal historian H. VinsonSynan, “the basic premise of Pentecostalism, that

one may receive later effusions of the Spirit afterinitiation/conversion, can be clearly traced inChristian history to the beginnings of the rite ofconfirmation in the Western churches”. Synan tracesthe influence of Catholic and Anglican mysticaltraditions on John Wesley’s doctrine of Christianperfection, from which Pentecostal beliefs on Spiritbaptism developed. John Fletcher, Wesley’sdesignated successor, argued that the second blessingas a cleansing experience was the “baptism in theHoly Spirit”. After his conversion in 1821,Presbyterian minister and revivalist Charles Finneyexperienced what he called “baptism in the HolySpirit” accompanied by “unutterable gushings” ofpraise. Within the holiness movement, which beganin the Methodist Church but soon spread to manydenominations, “baptism in the Holy Spirit” wasgenerally understood to be synonymous with thesecond blessing sanctification. Charles Fox Parhamwould later build on this doctrinal foundation whenhe identified speaking in tongues as the Bibleevidence of Spirit baptism.

Many people (both currently living and dead)have been baptized in the Holy Spirit over the lastcenturies leading up to this time, and the most famousincident of God baptizing many believers in onelocation was at the Azusa Street Mission in LongAngles, CA at the turn of the 20th century (1901).The Holy Spirit continues to give direction andinsight to the Church (Acts 2:38-39; 1 Thess. 5:19-20), to heal and work miracles, and aid us in ourwitness to the world as the Advocate of heaven untilJesus Christ returns. The kingdom of God (Matthew11:12) is forcefully advancing today through theworkings of the Holy Spirit that was promised inActs 1:8. Finally, the gifts of the Holy Spirit fitswithin the larger purpose of connecting us to Christ’scurrent intercessory and advocacy ministries inheaven (John 16:7, 13-14), a ministry that continuesthroughout this age.

Conclusion:What has been mentioned above is by no means

exhaustive, but (I believe) sufficient for any honestChristian believer seeking the truth concerning theworkings of the Holy Spirit today. Let me concludewith an extract that has been abridged from TheGeneral Council of the Assemblies of God official

Friendship is a gift that human beings enjoy. Most of us who are youths, love to spend time

hanging out with friends rather than being at homewith our family members. In the course of ourlifetime, we make friends every single day, manyof whom we would never see again. Some mightstick to us for a longer period of time while otherswould be mere acquaintances. The story of ‘fourfriends’ narrated in Mark 2: 1-12 stuns the readers, just as they surprised the crowd in the house atCapernaum. It is said the house where Jesus waspreaching the word was packed and there was noroom for anyone to enter in.Four determinedassociates tore up the roof so that they could lowertheir paralytic friend and placed him before Jesus. The reason why these friends surprise us with theiraction is because ‘they dared’ to help their helplessfriend who was in need. I call them daring because:

1. They DARED to be SELFLESSThe world that we live in today is all about “I,

me, and myself.” Everything that we do is intendedfor the betterment of our family, our lifestyle, ourcareer. I remember my mom telling me that whileshe was growing up, as a family, they dependedupon their neighbours for any and every help. Ifthey lacked any ingredient for a curry (salt, oil)they would run to their neighbours. In thecontemporary postmodern society, my ego will notallow me to ask my neighbours for anything. Wetry to be self-sufficient and independent. This trendof independency isolates each individual to beislands in the society. Selfishness and competitionis predominantly injected into the minds of ourlittle ones in homes and schools. It is in this context,

The Fervent Four

Renny K. Cherian, UBS, Pune

the story of the ‘four selfless friends’ challengeus. They saw a need and acted towards it.

2. They DARED to do the DIFFICULTCarrying a paralytic on a mat requires a lot of

manual labour. The four had to carry the grownman with unity and harmony. Amos 3:3 raises arhetorical question: “Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?” It must have thereforetaken a lot of planning, preparation, and sacrificebetween the four so that their friend is made wholeby the touch of Jesus. There is power in beingunited. Unity doesn’t come easy. It is difficult andit takes a lot of daring for unity to take place.

Had the four determinant friends gone to Jesus’gospel convention at Capernaum without theparalytic, they would have saved time, energy, probably their reputation. The fervent four putaside their agendas and interests. They ratherchose the hard way. It is said in verse 2 that “therewas no longer room for them, not even in front ofthe door.” To their discouragement, they reacheda “full house.” Disappointing indeed! Did theentire struggle to help their helpless friend go invain? Fascinatingly, their next move was trulyfervent. They tore the roof and dug throughit.Roofs in the 1st century Israel were made up ofmud and thatch, and therefore, they had to literallydig through the roof for an opening. It was as ifthey were standing on the principle: “Obstaclesprove to give way to opportunity.” Bringing anindividual before Jesus is hard work but it is worththe effort!

3. They DARED to do the UNEXPECTEDTearing up a roof is as unexpected and

Page 15: C.F. February 2012 · then at once, without any delay, return, approach His throne of grace and plead His past mercies, plead His glorious Name, and plead the Saviour’s blood. Our

February 2012 15.COLLEGIATE FISHERMAN

unacceptable as it is today. When the fervent fourdid not find enough room for them to bring theirparalytic friend to Jesus, they did not think oftaking their invalid friend back home. They werepersistent and believed that only if they could takehim before Jesus, he would be made whole. Allof a sudden, there was noise of the roof tearingapart, dust filled the air, and people who wereoverwhelmed by the preaching of Jesus divertedtheir attention to a mat being suspended by fourtenacious friends. The friends looked delirious butJesus saw their faith and healed the paralytic man.

A simple story yet the insights are manifold. The emerging culture of the 21st century hasprobably helped individuals grow as an‘individual’ but not as ‘communal beings.’ The

growing culture of social networking throughcyberspace is a thirst for humans to connect withother humans. Networking through cyberspace isonly a façade and not a reality. The four friendsnetworked in order that a need is met and adeprived is helped. Let friendship be that ofhelping and building one another. As Socialbeings, let us be sensitive to the needs around. There is a need for daring young people whowould penetrate the socio-cultural-religiousboundaries and help a friend in need. As the clichégoes, “A friend in need is a friend indeed!” Let ustake an effort to revive this cliché and make adifference in a ravenous, egoistic world.

Union Theological Cemetery?

The Union Theological Seminary, New York where I tookmy S.T.M. degree is known to be place of liberal theology.

One conservative lady who was supporting the Seminaryfinancially got angry at the new theological ideas propagatedby the teachers of the seminary. Dr. Henry Sloane Coffin wasthe President of the Seminary at that time. The lady telephoned to the President and queried“Is this Union Theological Cemetery?” The President calmly replied “Yes, Madam, Coffinspeaking.”

(Contd from page......13)position paper on the baptism in the Holy Spirit andspeaking in other tongues:

“Tongues are not the only evidence of a Spirit-filled life, but they are always the initial, or first, evidence that one has been baptized in the Holy Spiritas the entrance into a Spirit-filled life. One purposeof baptism in the Spirit is to empower the believerfor witness; therefore, enthusiasm and boldness inwitnessing, divine guidance and enabling in thepresentation of the gospel, and miraculousmanifestations of God’s power before unbelieversall may serve as additional evidences of baptism inthe Holy Spirit, though not as substitutions forspeaking in tongues.

The Spirit-filled life should also demonstrateprogressive development toward a complete Christ-like character. The fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22,23) should be developing in the life of every believer. It has been observed that some who have received

the baptism in the Holy Spirit and claim to be livingSpirit-filled lives demonstrate less evidence of thefruit of the Spirit than some who have not receivedthe Baptism experience. Such a fact does not destroythe truth that the Spirit takes raw material and, ifgiven the opportunity, helps develop Christ-likecharacter traits in every believer. Yet developmentof the fruit of the Spirit can, and should, be enhancedin those who have been filled with the Spirit.

Other supernatural gifts of the Spirit (besidesspeaking in tongues), though sometimes seeminglyevident in the lives of believers who have not beenbaptized in the Spirit, do not in themselves giveevidence of having been baptized in the Spirit. Themanifestation of supernatural gifts in the life of abeliever who has not been baptized in the Holy Spiritis possible, but being baptized opens the door to amore dynamic, more effective manifestation.”

Thou Waterest…

“Thou visitest the earth, and waterest it; Thou greatly enrichest it with theriver of God, which is Full of water; Thou Preparest their corn, when Thouhast so provided for it” – Psalms 65:9.

Gratitude towards God who had blessed David is expressed in the aboveverse. He praises Lord for His power shown in nature, and for supplying allhis needs. We too must be thankful to our Lord for the manifold blessings wereceive each day.

Indeed, we are bound to express our gratitude to the Lord for Hisfaithfulness to us and ICPF ministry, especially. The verse quoted have awonderful spiritual application, and for these blessings, we are especiallythankful to God at the dawn of this New Year.

The Lord has visited us with His presence, and has come to bless our fieldwith the river of God. He has enabled us to plant the corn into the groundwhich He has prepared to receive the seed. If it were not for this ministry ofthe Holy Spirit, we would be labouring in vain. Too often, we assume moreresponsibility than is ours, and too often we take credit for what God hasdone!

We can only be effective in our sowing when and where the soil is ready. How often do we throw the seed away by spreading it haphazardly on hardroadbeds or rocky slopes!

We do so little as compared to God’s working. We sow and help in thecultivation, but we are dependent upon the Lord to bring the sunshine and therain. In John 15:5, we read: ‘Without me ye can do nothing.’ Also we read in 1Corinthians 3:7- “So then neither is he that planteth anything, neither he thatwaterth; but God that giveth the increase.”

Our Lord is in control of the rain and the sun, the means by which theharvest will come. He will crown the year with His goodness; and his pathswill flow with prosperity!

Dr. D. Joshua

Rahab vs Achan

It is said that those who want to lead a victorius christian life should master thebook of Joshua of OldTestament. We can learn several precious lessons from

this book. The character study of Rahab, the prostitute and Achan from the tribeJude is of utmost importance .

In Joshua chapter two, we have the remarkable and intriguing story ofRahab (Joshua 2:1) Though she was a prostitute, she knew very well the God ofIsrael. She says “I know that the Lord has given this land to you and that a greatfear of you has fallen on us so that all who live in this country are melting infear because of you...........”. We have to admire her faith in God. No wonder theauthor of Hebrews has included her name in the list of heros of faith (Heb.11:31). She was non Jew, a gentile woman but she became a worthy daughter ofGod (ofcourse she might have repented of her sins and joined God’s people.

In contrast with Rahab, Achan the son of Carmi , of the tribe of Jude wasdifferent . He was responsible for the defeat of Israel in the city of Ai. Though hewas acquainted with godly Joshua, he was yielded to the temptations of clothesgold and silver. Achan replied ‘I have sinned against the Lord God. This is whatI have done when I saw the plunder, a beautiful robe from Babylonia, hundredshekels of silver and gold weighing fifty shekels (Joshua 7:20) I hid them forme.’

In the 21st Century, we notice a growing lust for gaudy clothes mainly toimpress upon. others According to Jawaharlal Nehru, the desire for yellow metalis a sign of primitive people. Pentcostals and such godly people once said goodbye to Jewellery costly costumes and cosmetics. Sad to say ornaments of gold, silver even diamond are returning to women and men. The spirit of Achan reignand rule the modern Christians. God is slow to anger but remember anger is notalien to his nature. It is terrible to fall in the hands of an angry God (JonathanEdward).

The ministry of ICPF Cambodia in year 2011 wasslowly and steadily growing and spreading by theGrace of God in the areas of Campus outreach, building relation with different churches, networking with different student dorms andraising prayer partners. God’s presence, guidanceand His provisions were very evident for allthrough the year in our personal lives and in theministry as well. All glory and honor belongs toour God Almighty alone.

The first half of year 2011 was not veryencouraging in terms of results. ICPF Cambodiahad planned several things such as registering anInternational NGO, starting a Student Hostel, anEnglish Learning Center etc... We tried very hardon these things, but nothing was fructified. ICPF’scommitment to the Canaan Technical Schoolended in June and we moved to a new house onJuly 1st.

The second half was more satisfying andencouraging, but not without fewdisappointments. We got more freedom in timeso that we could visit the Universities and studentsat their convenient time. And as a family we tootook few steps by faith and we could experienceGod’s powerful hands in our lives. He opened newways to get connected with people and Godmiraculously provided a teaching job for Bijily ina School here. August onwards, every month weinvited 12 to 15 students, Christians as well asnon-Christians to our home. We spent time inbuilding relationship, discussing several issues, sharing the Love of God, praying together, counseling the needy and having food together.Although we focused 6 major Universities, we(sometimes one or two Cambodian students) couldgo to more than 25 Universities/Higher EducationInstitutes. We started three groups of 4-6 studentsin three places, but they didn’t last for longbecause of various reasons. It was disappointing, but I was able to learn some of the real issuesbehind the problems and could address it. Godalso opened a way to teach Biblical Counselingfor 2.30 hours per week in Phnom Penh BibleSchool, the Lone Bible School registered with theministry of Religion and Cult.

Mission Update from Cambodia

Since the month of October, things start tomove and fall in place, and we could sense God’shand in the changes. Several student dorms, whichwere very difficult to get access before despitemany attempts, started to open their doors for us.Churches were more open to ICPF’s vision andits objectives. We narrowed down our focus to 6major Universities and training two Christianstudents from each University to become leadersthere. Currently we are networking with 23 studentdorms to build trust to come together in campuses. We are also meeting non-Christian students tobuild relationship with them, to share Gospel andto counsel who are in need. Presently we havecontacts with more than 250 Christian Universitystudents.

On January 4th of 2012, ICPF Cambodia hascompleted two and half years of its presence inCambodia. And it is time to scrutinize things andits strategies to enter into next level with a solidplan and preparation. May God raise strong andcommitted students to become salt and light intheir respective Universities! On this occasion,ICPF Cambodia expresses its heartfelt gratitudeand thanks to all well-wishers who have prayedand supported in every possible ways. Continueto uphold the ministry of ICPF Cambodia in yourvaluable prayers. May God bless you all!
