Kearney, situatedon the north fork ofthe Platte River andcounty seat of BuffaloCounty, is a perfectplace to live. Locatedon the first trans-continental U.S. east-west artery, LincolnHighway, it is also thejunction of the mainhighways of AmericanHistory: the Mormon,Oregon and Californiatrails; Pony Expressand Overland Stage;as well as the UnionPacific Railroad. Even500,000+ sandhill cranes have included a stop in Kearney aspart of their migratory pattern for hundreds of years!

Kearney takes its name from Fort Kearny, (the extra “e”was a bureaucratic error and never changed) which was estab-lished as the first U.S.Army Post on the Oregon Trail in 1848.Thousands of pioneers, prospectors and Pony Express riderspassed through on their way west. In1871 Anselmo B. Smith surveyedthe town site and the city wasincorporated in 1881.Economic setbacks beforethe turn of the 20thCentury turned aroundas Kearney NormalSchool (currently UNK)laid its foundations in1904 and various busi-nesses paved the way fortoday’s diversified economy. The 1964 completion of I-80 pass-ing through Kearney brought travelers tothe area and a very healthy tourist trade.

The progressive and determined character of the pioneersettlers of the past has informed today’s pathfinders whocontinue to blaze new trails and provide new jobs.

Today Kearney boasts a 2.4% unemployment rate whilethe national figures are over three times that amount. Theworkforce tends to be highly educated due in part to the pres-ence of excellent public and private schools (Kearney PublicSchool District earned the Blue Ribbon Award from ExpansionManagement magazine) as well as the University of Nebraskaat Kearney (named a Top 10 Regional University by U.S. NewsandWorld Report) and Good Samaritan Hospital, a regionalacute care medical center. These urban amenities and others, such as sophisticated telecommunications infrastructure,

combine with MainStreet America quality oflife to make Kearney aunique place to live.

With a 2010 popula-tion of just under 31,000,Kearney is a vibrant citythat balances manufac-turing and social servic-es, tourism and localtrade, indoor andoutdoor recreation. With a mall and severalstandalone large retail-ers, as well as anairport, historical andcultural museums andfamily friendly activities,

it is a shopping and cultural hub not only for its own residentsbut also for outlying communities in Buffalo and Kearneycounties.A thriving historical downtown (the “Bricks”) offersa variety of boutiques, gift shops, and excellent restaurants, nightlife and live music. The Kearney Parks and RecreationDepartment operates 14 city parks, which feature amphithe-aters and shelters; lake swimming and an outdoor summer

pool; numerous running, hiking and biking trails; tenniscourts, ball diamonds, basketball courts, golf, and sandvolleyball. There are a host of sports leagues, clubsand associations available to athletes of all ages.Add to that a full roster of UNK sports teams thathosted four NCAA National Championships inthe last three years, the Tri-City Storm U.S.

Hockey League team, the Viaero Event Center and privatelyowned and operated recreational facilities, and you have themakings of a home base with something for everyone!

Great work ethic, great schools, great career opportunities, safe, secure, and affordable.A great quality of life! Kearney isthe home many people dream about. Come live the dream!

the “CraneWatch.”During their northward migration, 500,000 sandhillcranes (the world’s largest concentration) spend six weeks resting andrefueling before moving to their breeding grounds further north.

By day, the cranes are best viewed from roadsides near the riverwhere they feed and rest in cropfields and meadows. Each evening thecranes fly to the river for nighttime roosting in the broad unvegetatedchannels. The spectacular flights to and from the river roosts may beviewed at dusk and dawn near the river.
