What is a CELL?
Assessing prior knowledge:
Wednesday, October 21, 2009
In this activity you will be viewing 12 different cells. Complete the following in your science notebook:
1. Sketch 1 cell from each of the 12 slides.
2. List any notable structural features of each cell (What does it look like?)
3. Infer about the function of each cell (What does it do?)

Example:1. Sketch 1 cell.
2. Structure - These cells are circular and “donut-shaped”. They do not appear to be connected and they look smooth on the surface. They are also red.
3. Function - These cells could possibly be carriers of hemoglobin within the bloodstream.

Origin
Where do CELLS come from?
Wednesday, October 21, 2009
The “Cell Theory” tells us that “cells come from preexisting cells”.
Wednesday, October 21, 2009
CELLS will usually originate as a zygote or a stem cell (a cell that doesn’t have a job yet).
Wednesday, October 21, 2009
The zygote/stem cell will become specialized in structure and function through a process called differentiation.
Wednesday, October 21, 2009
This differentiation is the result of changes in gene expression not changes in the DNA code.
