As the dog days of summer give way to falling leaves and cooler temperatures, the staff at CARD are excited to provide our community with new recreation opportunities! If you are interested in cooking (or eating!) check out the list of new cooking classes (pg. 23-24). Based on the success of summer camps, we are offering more options over spring break. Check out Cartoon Camp, Camp Table Top and Kids Coding Camp 2.0 (pg. 12). Other new classes include Chair Yoga, Historical Fencing, Basic Bicycle Maintenance and Adult Pocket Billiards. We did not forget about the little ones…we’ve got ShortE Tee-Ball (pg. 39) and Little Tracksters (pg. 44) for the kiddos.

Other NEW news includes the return of Ann Willmann. Ann has “come back home” to CARD as the General Manager. Ann worked for CARD for 6 years before spending the last 2 years as the General Manager of the Feather River Recreation and Park District. We are happy to have her back!

Lakeside CaféJoin Passages and the Chico Area Recreation and Park District at the beautiful Lakeside Café. In our café partnership, we have worked together to bring an enticing hot lunch to our adult community at a grand location. All lunches are freshly made and carefully planned to tempt the palette and offer great nutritional value. You are invited to come by and enjoy lunch with new and old friends alike. Lakeside Café will host lunch for adults 60 and up for a optional donation of $2.50. For those younger than 60, the cost of a meal is $5.00.

Youth Leader ProgramDo you know a young adult looking for a valuable summer experience working with children? The CARD Youth Leadership Program is designed for young adults entering the eighth grade and above. This voluntary experience partners youth leaders with our CARD summer camp staff. Program components include a parent meeting, interview, training and a minimum commitment of three weeks during the summer. The informational brochure and application will be available in February. Special Events

Pastels on the PlazaCome and “Chalk it up” in downtown Chico. This great family event gives both the novice and professional artist an opportunity to express themselves. Novice squares can be purchased by anyone who wants to participate. These 4’ x 4’ squares are perfect for a family, group or individual. Professional artists are encouraged to apply for a sponsored square on “Fine Art Alley”. These 8’ x 8’ squares are sponsored by local businesses. Applications for “Fine Art Alley” are available online at www.chicorec.com or at the CARD Office. All chalk is provided. Any outside chalk must state it is “Lead Free” if it is to be used in artwork.

Healthy Aging Summit and Senior Expo - FreeCARD, Enloe Home Health, Interim Health Care and Passages are presenting this free event offering a great opportunity to see the latest products and services, view demonstrations, participate in health screenings and gather information targeted for those age 50 and over. Educate you, family members and friends about the importance of prevention and maintaining good health for independence in your later years. Letter To SantaDuring December, boys and girls under 8 years old can receive a letter via CARD from jolly old Santa and his elves. Children should mail their letter to the CARD office, 545 Vallombrosa Avenue, Chico, CA 95926, no later than December 4. A self-addressed, stamped envelope must be enclosed. The return envelope will be postmarked from the North Pole. Unfortunately, due to the amount of letters received, any letters collected after December 4 will not receive a response.

Breakfast With SantaWelcome to Santa’s village! Choose what time you would like to have breakfast and then use the rest of the time to visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus and make crafts with the elves. Roots Catering will be serving pancakes and other wonderful breakfast treats. Choose from the available breakfast times, but come anytime to participate in the rest of the activities. This event will run from 8 AM- 12 PM. Every person attending must be registered. Space is limited, so register early; this event does sell out. CARD Community Center.

Chico Kite DayCelebrate spring at the end of a string! Bring the entire family for this free event. Experience the color and excitement of kite flying during the Annual Chico Kite Day. Watch the sky dance with fun and imaginative kites. All kite flyers will receive a souvenir, compliments of Bird in Hand, and music will be provided by Bob FM, 92.7.

NEW FALL ShortE Tee-Ball ShortE Tee-Ball includes fun and game play! This instructional program is open to all youth 3-6 years old. Coaches will work with players the first two weeks to introduce the sport of baseball using basic skill techniques and formations- including catching, throwing and batting from a tee. The last three weeks there will be 30 minute practices and a 20-30 minute non-competitive “game” each session. Fundamentals and simple game strategy will be taught throughout the entire program. Show up the first day and be ready to play! You will not be contacted by a coach for this program. Program will be held at DeGarmo Park. NEW SPRING ShortE All Stars- Weekday Parent/Tot Edition Sign your little one up for the ultimate first time sports experience! Toddler Pre-K ProgramsHow do I register for a Toddler Pre K Program? Simply choose the class that is appropriate for the age of your child. If there is room in the class, you will be able to register immediately online or at the CARD Office at 545 Vallombrosa Ave. (no online registration is available). If the class is full, you will be placed on a waiting list and contacted when an opening becomes available.

How long is the session? This is an ongoing class. Once you are registered, you will remain registered until you notify us that your child will no longer attend. Should you choose not to continue, simply notify the CARD office so we can contact the next person on the waitlist.

How do payments work? The fee for the class is due by the 1st of each month. *If payment is received on or after the 1st of the month, the fee increases by $10.

Our Time Together: Parent/Child Program for 18-35 Months Old Fall 2015 Begins Wed. 9/2 Our Time Together can be an exciting and fun opportunity for your child to improve current skills, learn new skills, make friends, and have fun. This is also an opportunity for us to create a parenting community and share development milestones. During the toddler years, your child will make huge strides physically, intellectually, and emotionally, whether it’s learning to use the potty or stacking blocks.

Something to observe in this program is how your child plays adjacent to other children in the playgroup. This cooperative social interaction is called parallel play and helps children begin language development, build confidence, and form relationships. Your child will increasingly learn to share and become aware of other’s emotions, as well as learn cause and effect through trial and error of adjusting and solving problems in play.

Not only are our classes a wonderful bonding opportunity for you and your child, they are an excellent way to meet new friends, introduce your child to other children, and find others that will support you through the exciting adventure of parenthood.

Each day the classroom will be set up with developmentally age appropriate toys and activities that parents can do with their child. The teacher will be there to assist parents and children in participation. We have a single day a week option (Monday or Wednesday) or a two day a week option (Monday and Wednesday).

NEW Parent Power HourToddlerhood can be a time of amazing growth and triumph for parents as their children move from dependent babies to independent determined little people. Although this can be a joyous time filled with delight it can also pose huge challenges to parents as we navigate these years of new found freedom in our children. If you would like to learn more about the 18 month – 3 year old, or want a place to go to discuss and learn from other parents, please join me in an eight class series. Topics include (but are not limited to) basic developmental stages, emotional and social development, play and learning, positive discipline/limit setting, tantrums, and temperament. While we are discussing topics your child will be engaged in different play activities in the CARD Preschool Classroom with Michelle Gustafson; a CARD preschool teacher. Parent Power Hour can be taken in combination with Our Time Together, in which parents can see in action some of the topics we will be covering, or on its own. This is an eight-week class that meets every other Friday from 9:00 am – 10:30am Classes begin Friday September 11, 2015 and go through Friday December 18, 2015. Program will be held at the Dorothy F. Johnson Center.

Tiny Tots: 3-4 Year OldsFall 2015 Begins Tues. 9/1 A great first classroom experience for your child! This program is designed to model and teach your child age appropriate skills so they will confidently transition into a Pre-K program or Kindergarten. We have designed the program to make learning participation fun and engaging! We strive to provide a positive, safe, and nurturing learning environment that addresses each student’s individual needs. We know that each child has a different learning style and we will incorporate many styles while engaging all students in a fun and supportive manner.

Each day is full of fun and age appropriate activities for your child. While participating in games, music, crafts, stories and play, your child will benefit from this social environment. Our teacher encourages working with others, sharing and taking turns. Our dedicated preschool room and playground make this a perfect place for your child’s first preschool experience. Children must be potty trained before attending class.

Chico Center for Learning Pre KTransition your child from preschool to Kindergarten. CARD is partnering with Chico Center for Learning (CCL) in offering a Transitional Kindergarten program for children 4 to 5 years old who will be entering Kindergarten in Fall 2016. With an emphasis on reading and math preparation, as well as music, movement, art, and science, the CCL offers a quality program that will prepare your child for Kindergarten. This is a modified Kindergarten curriculum taught by credentialed teachers. It is age and developmentally appropriate. Each class is limited to 12 students. The program operates September-May, M-Th, 8:30-11:45 AM with monthly fees of $300. If you are interested in this program, please contact CCL directly at 343-2980.

ScheduleFall 2015 through Spring 2016Our mission at Thrive is to inspire a life-long love of learning by respecting each person’s individual interests, strengths, and capabilities. It is a place where children are free to learn, inspire, imagine, create, play, and shine!

All sessions will live up to that mission by being a free and open structured environment where children are liberated to choose their level of participation. Session advisors work with the children to create an emergent and free flowing curriculum that derives from the imaginations of the children enrolled.

Learning invitations are presented in an environment that fosters imagination, self- motivation, and meaningful experiences. Books, websites, magazines, nature, music, math concepts, science projects, art projects, building materials, creative play, and idea sharing will spark the imagination.

Thrive also presents a wonderful opportunity for social experiences and creative expression.

NEW- Most activities are aligned with state standards and participant portfolios will reflect which activities they participated in. These portfolios will be a wonderful way to share your child’s learning with their ES (homeschool teacher).

Kids on CampusAfter School ProgramsLooking for a safe, fun and enriching place to send your children after school? If so, CARD’s Kids On Campus After School Program is the place for you! In addition to time for homework, arts, crafts, games, free play and a healthy snack, participants are introduced to a variety of enrichment opportunities. This program follows the school calendar. Participants are signed in and out every day. The ratio of staff to children is 1:12, and staff are CPR and First Aid certified.

1st – 6th Grade Program:• Participating Schools: Blue Oak Charter, Chapman, Citrus, Hooker Oak, Little

Chico Creek, McManus, Neal Dow, Parkview and Rosedale.

• Programs run from the time school gets out until 6:00 pm and are located in each school’s multi-purpose room.

Enrollment Options: Mon-Fri $176 per month M/W/F $115 per month T/Th $85 per month

Kinder-6th Grade Program:• Participating Schools: Emma Wilson (2:10-6:00 pm), Marigold (2:00-6:00 pm),

FAQ’s:

Q: How do I sign my child up?

A: To find out if your child’s school has openings, or to get on the waiting list, contact the CARD office at 895-4711. Many schools have little or no waiting lists; however, CARD recommends you put your child on the waiting list when they are 2 years old to help ensure you will have a spot when they enter school.

Q: Do I have to put my child on the waiting list each year?

A: No. Once you put your child on the waiting list, they stay on until they are offered a spot in the program. Please make sure to contact us to update your phone number if it changes.

Q: Does my child have to attend every day?

A: No. The program is for your benefit and you may use it as you feel necessary. The fee for the program is a flat rate fee. CARD does not prorate for days not attended.

Bricks 4 Kidz classes provide an extraordinary atmosphere for children, where we learn, we build, we play… with LEGO® bricks. Programs are built around a proprietary model plans, designed by engineers and architects, with exciting themes such as space, construction, and amusement parks. The specially designed project kits and theme-based models provide the building blocks for the Bricks 4 Kidz approach to educational play.

September: Laws of MotionIntroduce kids to physics! Test out some of Sir Isaac Newton’s Laws of motion with models that illustrate the concepts of inertia, force, mass, acceleration, and observation that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Kids will launch paper footballs as targets with the Catapult model, give their mini figures ride on motorized See-Saw, Swing-o-Rama and Ferris Wheel rides! Students will love practicing telling time as they build the Clock model. This unit has challenging, fun LEGO® brick projects that will start the school year off right!

October: Energy is EverywhereEnergy is essential to almost everything we do, from the lights in our homes and classrooms to the gasoline that fuels our cars. Introduce your students to the world of energy in all its forms. This unit explores many sources of energy from wind and solar to biofuel and fossil fuel. Students will define terms like renewable energy, landfill and greenhouse effect. With motorized LEGO® brick builds like Windmill, Solar Panels, Water Wheel and Garbage Truck, students will have a blast while learning about our environment.

*November: Space AdventuresLet’s go to Space! Students will learn about real-life space exploration and build a new model related to the NASA space program. Models include a Satellite, a Lunar Module, a Centrifuge, a Treadmill and a Space Robot! March: Factory FunHave you ever wondered how things are made? Or wanted to operate the big machines in a factory? Factories rely on special machines to help build, move and package the things we use everyday. Come build kid-sized versions of these clever creations, such as a Scissor Lift, specialized Conveyor Belts and even a Robot! Students will learn about the engineering challenges involved in machine design and may be inspired to invent your own machine!

April: Life ScienceExplore the fascinating science of living things and build LEGO® models of creatures from Caterpillars to Dinosaurs. During this unit, students will explore topics such as how the human body stays cool, the amazing life cycle of a butterfly, and investigate the Venus Fly Trap—a plant that eats bugs! If you love to create, this is the class for you!

May: Ticket to RideLet’s go to the Fair! Delve into the history and mechanics of your favorite amusement park rides in this imaginative unit. Cartoon CampThis creative camp provides a fun exploration into cartooning and animation concepts, principles in traditional media (drawing/painting) and stop motion techniques (photography). Story development, character design and sequence development through basic storyboarding and image capture techniques will be explored. Ballet FitnessBallet with a twist! This class includes a traditional ballet barre, and some center work, but adds the extra fitness component of a “floor barre,” or ballet specific core toning exercises. This is a beautiful way to increase your strength and fitness level.

Contemporary/LyricalThis NEW class is a great introduction to a beautiful dance style! Contemporary (or Lyrical) dance is what style that hovers somewhere between ballet and jazz, encompassing endless freedom of movement and expression.

Chico Community BandPick up your instrument, dust it off and get ready to play! There are no auditions for this band, just sign up and come on down to Tuesday night rehearsals. The Chico Community Band, a wind and percussion ensemble with approximately 40 participants, is open to musicians ranging from teens to seniors. Formed before World War II, the Band continues to practice a repertoire of marches, show tunes, and innovative pieces by current composers that it performs for local audiences. Performances include Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Veterans Day celebrations, as well as a Friday Night Concert in the Park, a spring and winter concert. Coach Of The Quarter: Chris Mitchell and Bruce Thomas FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME

Our two Co-Coaches of the Quarter, Coach Bruce Thomas and Coach Chris Mitchell have the spirit of “love of the game” within them! Not only are these two amazing basketball coaches- but they are fantastic people. When each coach was recognized as Coach of the Quarter, the first thing they wanted to do was give appreciation and thank their “co-coaches” and “assistants” that have helped them throughout the years. They both expressed their gratitude to the amazing teamwork and support that was created through a group effort in order to have a positive and successful experience.

Coach Mitchell and Coach Thomas always go above and beyond to make sure that their players are better athletes, but more importantly better people by the end of each season. Coach Mitchell says, “When you see how much effort and passion these kids pour into practices and games, it inspires me to do everything I can to support them.” Coach Thomas says, “Improving as a player and as a person is a lifelong process and I believe a ‘love of the game’ provides the foundation to that process.”

Each coach is a master at using basketball as the vehicle to emphasize character development skills throughout each season. On his team, Coach Thomas teaches working together, communication and most importantly, to be accountable to each other and themselves. Coach Mitchell makes sure that each player knows that they are an integral part of the team- regardless of their skill set. He asks players for their ideas and then uses them to give players a level of team ownership that creates a high level of team trust.

Both coaches volunteer during basketball seasons for over 7 years of combined CARD coaching. We are so lucky to have them as part of our program, and cannot extend our appreciation enough to them. Congratulations to our Co-Coaches of the Quarter, Chris Mitchell and Bruce Thomas!

FALL & WINTER Little Hoopsters Basketball Instructional League (K-2nd)This instructional program is open to all youth in K-2 grade. Coaches will work with players the first 2-3 weeks to introduce the sport of basketball using basic skill techniques and formations. The last 2-3 weeks there will be 20 minute practices and 40 minute formal games each day. Fundamentals and simple game strategy will be taught throughout the entire program. 1. Repeat the program at no charge. 2. Receive full credit that can be applied to any other program. 3. Receive a full refund.

Currently, this guarantee applies to all of our programs except Adult Leagues, Facility Rentals, Trips and Tours, and all grant/scholarship funded programs. These programs have specific policies that apply. Your complete satisfaction with these programs is equally valued, and we will work with you to resolve your concerns.

To receive a credit, repeat a program, or obtain a refund, please contact us in writing, by phone, by email, or in person. Requests must be made within ten (10) business days after the last program meeting. Your receipt, cancelled check or proof of I.D. may be required. Refund checks will be processed within fifteen (15) business days.

Cancellation PolicyIn the event CARD needs to cancel a class or program due to low enrollment, inclement weather, or any other unforeseen circumstance, you will receive a full refund of the registration fee. We understand that unexpected circumstances may also arise resulting in a need for you to withdraw from a class or program. If so, please notify us prior to the first day of the class, and you will receive a full refund. Unfortunately, due to the nature of some of our programs, there are some exceptions. Please refer to the program for additional information and exceptions. Requests for refunds or transfers may be made in person, by email or by phone. CARD FactsThe Chico Area Recreation and Park District is a California Special District. CARD is neither a County nor City department. While we work alongside the City in several aspects, we are not governed by the City of Chico. We are a separate government entity (a special district) operating under Section 5780 of the California Public Resources Code formed by public vote in 1948.

CARD is governed by an elected five member Board of Directors, each serving a four year term. CARD has a salaried General Manager who manages the operation of all District staff, programs, and facilities. There are 32 full-time and over 300 part time employees whose duties are directed toward the operation of recreation programs and the maintenance of parks and facilities.

Our BudgetCARD revenue comes from many different sources. While fee based programs and rentals generate the bulk of our revenue, other sources include Property Taxes, RDA Passthrough funds, Assessments and Park Impact fees.
