GREAT PEOPLE NEEDED!

A Project New Hope (PNH) can happen in Arizona! Volunteers need to fill such Board positions: secretary, treasurer, operations, marketing, finance, fundraising, webmaster and coordinator with Lions clubs. There will be other positions after the PNH Arizona club gets established. The majority of the members must be Lion’s club members. That means you can also ask non-Lion members lions to assist with this venture. PNH was started in Minnesota by Lion Bruce Billington. In 2007, he was at a weekend camp for the disabled and thought the location would be helpful for veteran’s having difficulty assimilating into civilian life. PNH has evolved from Minnesota to Wisconsin, New York, Washington State and Canada. Arizona could join in with your help! Project New Hope is for those who have been deployed and are suffering from post-traumatic stress (PTS). PTS example: imagine your mind is a Browser and has 3,459 tabs open all the time. It will not shut off, no matter what. THAT’S PTS! Since there are seven military bases in Arizona, you might know a family member, friend or neighbor who has been affected by their combat experience. The whole family can attend the retreats along with beloved one. There is no cost for: housing, meals, counselors (licensed by the state) and volunteers. Besides the retreats there are workshops, group sessions and field trips. Some ways to cover the costs are: grants, Lions clubs, corporations, small businesses, veteran’s organizations, communities, donations and fundraisers. Lions Project New Hope Northwest BOD Brieanne Berg moved here from Washington State and is willing to dedicate her knowledge, time and effort to make a Project New Hope in Arizona. This is an exciting trailblazing endeavor, one that you will not want to miss. With the thank yous and heartwarming rewards you will yearn to return year after year. With your help we can make this happen! Give Brieanne a call: 206-715-0564 or email at: [email protected].

DISTRICT 21 ADG Tom Price“Remember We Are In The Business of Change”

In this month’s issue I want to concentrate on goals for District 21A.

Leadership DevelopmentDistrict 21A Global Action Leadership Team

Coordinator PDG Ann Roberts, along with her team, had a successful zone chair training. I want thank her and all who made it successful.

I’d like to remind all presidents that there is a President’s E-Book. The link to the President’s E-Book is http://www.lionsclubs.org/resources/EN/pdfs/ebook/DA-CPFVPEB.pdf . The importance of the President’s E-Book is that it allows you to answer many questions that you will have as president. If you have any questions, I encourage you to always feel free to ask questions of the district leadership. We want each of you to have the most enjoyable year as president of your club.

Thanks to Lion Rob Mayer, many of the secretaries were able to be trained. Those who could not attend I would encourage you to copy this link, http://www.lionsclubs.org/resources/EN/pdfs/ebook/DA-CSEB.pdf and look at the Secretary’s E-Book. I, like you, served as a secretary of my club. In many respects the secretary is the key to the success of any club. More and more duties are placed on the secretary to report club activities. Additionally, Lion Rob Mayer is more than willing to answer your questions. You can contact him at [email protected].

In regards to treasurer ’s training, I

encourage you to look at the following resources for your training: http://www.lionsclubs.org/resources/EN/pdfs/ebook/DA-CTEB.pdf .

I don't if you realize it or not, there is an e-book available for the club membership chairperson: http://www.lionsclubs.org/resources/EN/pdfs/ebook/DA-CMEB.pdf .

And for the club service chairperson there is the following e-book available: http://www.lionsclubs.org/resources/EN/pdfs/ebook/DA-CSCEB.pdf .

All of these e-books are so easy to use online. If there is an area you have a question about, all you do is click on the link and it will take you to your answer.

Membership DevelopmentI’m happy to report that 21A has a net

growth. My goal was to have a net growth of 15 by October 1, 2018. We are a few shy of that net growth. Speaking of new members, I want to give a shout out to Lion Allan Akeson of the Goodyear Lions Club. It was my pleasure to induct him at the time of my official visit.

New ClubIt is my understanding in talking with District

21A Global Membership Team Coordinator PID Dave Roberts that we are on track to adding at least one additional club this Lionistic year. Congratulations PID Dave. I look forward to seeing that.

District’s Retention GoalsI want to encourage each club’s membership

chairperson to do a search on lionsclubs.org for the presentation entitled “Why Lions Leave and How to Retain Them.”

Service ImpactI encourage each club to make sure your

service is being reported consistent with the LCI guidelines. If you need help in that reporting, please feel free to contact Lion Rob Mayer.

LCIF SupportAs I attend the various clubs I am

impressed at how much you all give back to your community in time, and effort and money. Remember that Lions Club International Foundation is there when there is a catastrophic loss due to a great tragedy in any one of our communities. Remember you can pledge online: http://www.lionsclubs.org/resources/EN/pdfs/lcif/LCIF_C010.pdf .

I realize this article is a tad on the boring side, but I think it’s important for the district governor to share his goals with those who are going to be able to get them accomplished. I look forward to meeting each one of you as I continue to my official visits.

Kingman Mohave Lions Club Inaugurates the State’s New Float

On a beautiful, sunny Arizona morning, both Lions and Leo’s proudly walked with Arizona’s new 16-foot tall inflatable lion during Kingman’s annual Andy Devine Day’s parade which was held September 29th. Unboxed for the first time, the massive inflatable lion was positioned on a platform on the back of Lion Chuck Myers’ shiny red pickup truck with Lions riding in the cab and other’s marching next to and behind the float. Several of the Lions

handed out candy to children. Our Leo’s led the way carrying the Lions Club banner.

Many hours and a generous contribution of creative energy went into preparing for the parade. Lions Roger and Mari Peterson drove from Kingman to Phoenix to pick up the float, then they invited local Club members to help set it up the weekend before the parade ensuring an uneventful set-up the morning of the parade. Lions Richard and Diana Anderson helped build the platform the inflatable lion and its equipment sat on. Kingman’s Home Depot generously discounted materials needed to build the platform.

Lion Mari Peterson decorated the float with international flags, and selected the music

that filled the air as the float moved along the parade route. Lion Bruce Carver took the photographs that captured this special event. Other Kingman Mohave Lions who participated included 21A District Governor Tom Price, Lions Ada Calderon, Mike and Melissa Palmer, Jim Maberry, Chuck Myers, CST Dannette Myers and Lake Havasu Lions Annie Huma and Louise Hagan. Everyone had a great time showing off our state’s new parade lion.

The lion has been handed off to the Stafford Lions Club and there are already plans for it to be used by the Lake Havasu Club. State Lions plan to use it in this December’s Fiesta Bowl Parade in Phoenix. Scheduling is coordinated

Cleaning UpMembers of the Sun City Host Lions Club collected soaps and shampoos they picked up at motels and hotels while traveling this summer and donated them to the H.A.R.T. Pantry (Helping at Risk Teens). These items, along with high protein foods are bagged and given to school administrators who, in turn, give them to teens who do not live at home, but are enrolled in school. The bags provide food for the weekend and a way to keep clean during the week. If you have questions regarding this project, contact Ruth Langford at 252-259-9321.

Flags for First Graders

Lion Mike Conley with the Sun City Host Lions Club stopped by the Woodworking Club of Bell Center to thank the woodworkers for making more than six hundred wooden bases that will distributed to first graders at

various schools in the Phoenix area. During the presentation to first graders Lions not only talk about the flag’s history, but also how to show respect for the flag. Flags presentations are made in November and in February. If you would like to learn more about this program, call Lion Shirley Gerhart at 623-240-2241.

Lions with H.A.R.T.Lion Roy with the Sun City Host Lions Club

asked Ruth Langford, Executive director with HART Pantry (Helping at Risk Teens) if she

needed some help repairing donated bicycles. As you can see from the picture, she said yes! The bicycles are given to teens that are not living at home but are still attending school and need transportation to either school or work. Ruth is a member of Sun City

Mid-Week Bell Lions Club. If you would like additional information call Shirley Gerhart at 623-240-2241.

Seven members of the Sun City Host Lions Club helped sort approximately thirty thousand

pairs of eye glasses at the Arizona Lions Vision & Hearing Foundation. The glasses were donated by the public to Lions clubs in the Phoenix area. Once cleaned and sorted the glasses will be distributed to those in need.

“1 Act of Random Kindness”

Need and Charitable Giving from Lions

Need. There’s so much need everywhere, in our communities and globally, with so many worthy causes vying for our attention. Heart wrenching ads bombard us daily in our mailboxes, social media and television seeking our monetary help. So many requests that “donation fatigue” can easily set in and we contribute only to those causes that specifically and personally touch our hearts and passions. OUR Charity, LCIF, addresses so many needs.

“Where there’s a need, there’s a Lion.” rings true in over 200 countries. Because there are 1.4 million Lions all over who know what their communities need, we have diverse options to help whether it is for youth, disaster assistance, hunger, diabetes, childhood cancer, the environment or vision impairment. LCIF provides support to clubs for all of these focus areas.

$1.92 per week X 52 weeks = $100.00

That’s what LCIF Campaign100 – Empowering Service is asking of all Lions to consider $100.00 per Lion per year from individual member donations. The overall goal is to raise $300 million in the next three years from Lions, clubs and corporations. Your club’s LCIF coordinator can provide you with donation cards or you make your donation on-line. Any donation will be gratefully accepted.

Recap about LCIF - • LCIF is a 501(c)3 organization • LCIF is OUR charity • LCIF does not get any money from Lions member dues • All donations to LCIF are tax deductible • Undesignated donations to LCIF earn Melvin Jones Fellowship credits • Individual Lions earn MJF credits for their donations • Individual Lions’ donations are included in their club’s donation report • You don’t need to donate $1000 at one time to earn enough MJF credits for a Fellowship. Small donations accumulate MJF credits • After you have accumulated 1000 MJF credits, LCIF will NOT automatically send you a Melvin Jones Fellowship. You must request it and designate the recipient.

Club budgets. In addition to your club’s donation to LCIF, don’t forget to include these state and district projects in your service budget – they are all 501(C)3 foundations:

“Making A Difference”

The definition of the word “pangram” is: “A sentence that contains all 26 letters of the English alphabet”. The most common pangram sentence is: ‘THE QUICK BROWN FOX JUMPS OVER A LAZY DOG’. (This why your typing teacher requested you type the above over and over and over again to gain expertise in knowing where every letter of the alphabet was located on the typewriter keyboard.)

Likewise, when a group of “like-minded” people who have a common goal of service and are very successful at what they do, we may define them as a coalition, collaborators, cohorts or a contingent. Today, we refer to the aforementioned District 21C group as “PROUD LIONS”. As your 21C District Governor, please allow me to guide you into the world of 21C “PROUD LIONS” as the world is watching our District 21C clubs “Making a Difference” in 2018-2019:

The monthly LCI Club Health Assessment of June 30, 2018 showed that District 21C had a total of 1,142 members in 42 clubs, each having a desire to make their community better through concentrated service projects

and share their vision by bringing into their clubs other “like-minded” volunteers. Then, by October 25, 2018 District 21C showed a total of 1,193 members or a net gain of 51 “PROUD LIONS”! (The other positive is that District 21C actually added a total of 77 new members, but unfortunately had to ‘drop’ 26 leaving the net gain of 51.) Now, let’s put these numbers more into perspective: There are currently over 8,400 Lions Clubs in 59 districts in what is considered Constitutional Area I encompassing the USA, Canada and Bahamas. PID Jerome Thompson advised that at the end of the first quarter (September 30, 2018), MD21 ranked #4 (out of the 59 total multiple districts) in net membership growth. Number one was MD 35 (Florida) with 85 net growth; #2 MD 2 (Texas) with 73 net growth and #3 MD 4 (California) had 63 net growth.

Recognition is now proudly offered for the fantastic job each MD21 club who participated in the above growth figures. You definitely earn the title of “PROUD LIONS” and are truly “Making a Difference”!

In this November, 2018 edition of Canyon

State Lion below, you will also see a list of 88 District 21C members who have shown they, too, are “PROUD LIONS” by being Lions Volunteers from 10 years to 55 years! Please check out their names and their club affiliation in this issue of CSL and make sure to express your appreciation for their dedication to LIONS SERVICE.

Make sure you join other “PROUD LIONS” by also attending the upcoming MD21 Leadership Forum. Pay particular attention to the newly announced “Service Enterprise Initiative” being presented by AmeriCorps VISTA’s McKenna Bidelman who is currently attached to the Arizona Governor’s Office of Youth, Faith and Family. MD21 is approaching an era of major change and McKenna is offering leadership training to assist in bridging the upcoming changes in addition to being a Points of Light “Certified” non-profit organization.

Listed in the next few pages are the “PROUD LIONS” who have earned their Chevron Awards:

OCTOBER 22-24, 2018 MEDICAL & HUMANITARIAN MISSION IN MALITA-DAVAO OCCIDENTAL, PHILIPPINES(a special report from ZC Charmel dela Cruz)The Phoenix Barangay Lions Club in cooperation with the Federation of Philippine American Chambers of Commerce (FPACC), One World Institute (OWI) headed by Dr. Yolanda Stern, PUBC-PCCI representative Charo Yu, and the Davao Occidental Provincial Government under the leadership of Governor Claude Bautista conducted a Medical & Humanitarian Mission in Malita, capital of Davao Occidental, Philippines on October 22-24, 2018. District 21-C Governor Doug Harris fully supported the sponsoring Phoenix
