A great way for your club members to support LCIF Campaign 100!

GOT $20

Get 50 tickets where the club member can put their name and phone number on the ticket. Keep the tickets until you sell fifty tickets at $20 each. Once you sell fifty tickets, that is $1,000 - the cost of a Melvin Jones Fellowship (MJF), or a progressive MJF, or the winner can gift it to a member. You pull a name from the collected tickets. Then the $1,000 is put into the LCIF account in the winner's name by the club secretary. The club can do this over and over and keep raising funds for LCIF Campaign 100. We can achieve amazing money through these efforts and in the meantime reward our members. Print out the attachment and get started at your next club meeting - it is up to us to bring awareness to our very own charity, LCIF, and raise funds that not only help in times of disaster worldwide but also in Arizona. Just think if half of the clubs in Arizona do this fund raiser for LCIF........ we have about 110 clubs, so half would be 55 and if the clubs do this fund raiser that would raise $55,000 for LCIF and we would have 55 MJFs or progressives!!! What a way to get the members invested into LCIF - our very own charity. And if the clubs do a couple of these each year during the campaign, Arizona club members could very EASILY raise a couple $100,000 - just from our very own club members - we can set Arizona way up in the fund raising numbers with very little effort. If you need specifics and information about LCIF, please contact your club LCIF chairperson, your district LCIF chairperson, or MD LCIF Chairperson, PDG Fred Garmeson. Hey, this is a great idea for your Club LCIF Chairperson to do an in-house service project with your members! Oh, and guess what you can have anyone buy a ticket, the money all goes to charity! And if a non-member wins, well welcome to being a MJF! Please print out the following GOT $20 flyer and get started at your next club meeting! Let’s do this Arizona Lions! ARE YOU READY FOR THE LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE? Please add November 1 – 3 to your calendar to be at the Embassy Suites in Tempe. District 21-A District Governor David Pryce is hosting the event and PDG Fred Garmeson is the conference chairperson. We have a great schedule of events that we think you will enjoy. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1st - Registration begins at Noon. Friday afternoon will be the 1st Council Meeting from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Plan on attending as there will be lots to discuss with redistricting to 21-N and 21-S in July 2020. SATURDAY, November 2nd - The opening session will have THREE very different speakers to peek your interest. First up will be PDG Ken Moore from New Mexico who will get us motivated for the day. Then we will hear from Dr. Brian McKay and Dr. Anna Figueroa from the University of Arizona – they will bring us up-to-date on macular degeneration – fabulous information for all. Last up is Lion Daniel Marney Elkins from Delaware who is passionate about Strategic Recruiting. THREE outside speakers to help you get started for a day of leadership! Saturday lunch will be just right to hear the International Director and a little bit of recognition from just the district governors so we can get to the meat of this weekend - LEADERSHIP. We have about 20 sessions in the works and I’ll bring you up on those next month. A teaser - we do have sessions by Lions from outside Arizona and a Q&A session with the UofA doctors, and a Q&A with Lion Daniel. Since there will be no time for questions from their morning presentations – you’ll have time to ask your questions in the afternoon. Don’t forget about dinner – good food and entertainment await you! SUNDAY, November 3rd - District cabinet meetings will be held right after breakfast. Then back to our districts we go to serve our community until we meet again to socialize and learn more to take back to our clubs. Looking forward to seeing you at conference – CC Larry and GLT Barbara

SPECIAL PROJECT - needs your contribution: We are looking for action photos of Lions serving in Arizona to be included in a state-wide marketing brochure. These could be any kind of service with action shots of Lions serving, smiling and having fun. Be aware the photos we need should be focused on the service, not the Lion. Examples: a Lion doing a vision screening - but focused on the event not the Lion; a Lion doing a hearing screening, a Lion serving a meal, focus on the person being served, not the Lion. A Lion doing an environmental service project, show the project. Every type of service project is desired. Please remember our five focus areas of service: Vision, Hunger, Diabetes, Environment, and Childhood Cancer. Also, include any other areas of service you do. The best photos will be displayed at the Mid-Winter convention and will be used in our advertising campaign to attract new Lions. Please submit the photos, along with a brief description of the event, location and club involved along with a statement that the photo may be used in Lions MD-21 advertising to Lion Richard Stevenson, [email protected] with the subject of the email to be “MD-21 photos”.

Totals for MD-21 Screenings

I am very proud to announce that MD-21 Lions have screened 160,531 children throughout the state.

After speaking with Kids Sight USA, we are also the Second highest screeners in the United States.

All the Lions should be very proud of the many hours and hard work that went into each school, to ensure a better education for every child.

For the upcoming fiscal year, the following needs to be recorded: (inputting will be done monthly)

Date of screening, Club, how many screeners, school name, age of students, refer or Pass.

Try to get to know your school nurses and inquire to whether a child has seen a doctor for follow up. This could be someone your club can help.

Please remember to report the following information to Lion Jeannette Russell [email protected].

All the information will be forwarded to Kids Sight USA. Let your clubs be recognized for what they do.

We Serve!

Campaign 100 Club Programs

Campaign 100 has a number of programs that allow clubs at all levels to support the Campaign. Some programs are well suited for one club but not others. However, one of the programs will work for every club. In all programs, individual Lion’s donations earn Melvin Jones Fellow credit.

100/100 Club: 100% of the member of a club must donate $100 to Campaign 100 in one year. This is only a one year obligation and is a members only program. Outside donations do not apply to this program.

Model Club: Clubs are asked to pledge a minimum per member average (PMA) of $750 between FY 2017/2018 and 2021/2022. This is less that $250 PMA per year.

Members do not have to donate $750 each. The club just needs to raise an average of $750 per member. Donations can come from any source: members, non-member individuals and businesses and the club’s treasury.

100 Club: This program is for clubs that don’t have the ability to raise the money to be a Model Club. The 100 Club only has to pledge a minimum of $300 PMA between FY 2017/2018 and 2020/2021. This is less than $100 PMA per year.

Again, members do not have to donate $300 each. The club just needs to raise an average of $300 per member. Donations can come from any source: members, non-member individuals and businesses and the club’s treasury.

Classic Club: This program is for clubs that don’t have the resources to raise $300 PMA but still wants to be recognized for their support of Campaign 100. These clubs pledge a minimum of $150 PMA between FY 2017/2018 and 2020/2021. This is less than $50 per member average per year.

Once again, members do not have to donate $150 each. The club just needs to raise an average of $150 per member. Donations can come from any source: members, non-member individuals and businesses and the club’s treasury. These are minimum donations. Clubs are allowed to donate more than the minimum. Any and all donations by the members and clubs count toward the pledge. To take advantage of one of these programs, simply decide which program will work best for your club and contact your District Coordinator, or MD Coordinator, for information and the appropriate commitment form. All clubs taking part in one of these programs will be recognized in social media and at conventions. Some clubs will also receive banner patches from Lions International. The Classic Club is an Arizona only program. All clubs will be recognized in the Canyon State and Arizona Conventions.

DISTRICT 21 ADG David Pryce

As I considered what should be the theme of my first letter to the district, the thing that came to mind was the change that is coming when we re-district at the end of the fiscal year. What does that mean to the individual Lion in the multiple district? Not much in the general scheme of things. Our clubs may report to a different set of leaders and have a new constitution and by-laws to govern their actions; but, all of us are still Lions. We will still strive to serve the needs of our communities and be a source of help wherever we are needed.

We will still enjoy each other’s company and have fun in providing comfort and help for our friends in need. In other words we are just going to “be Lions”. All of us have contributed in the past to improving Vision for the public. Now there are other areas that Lions Clubs International wants us to help with. Diabetes and how it affects all aspects of the human existence. Hunger and malnutrition and how it keeps people from achieving their proper destiny. Environment and poor living conditions, strike all economic classes with

horrible consequences. Pediatric cancer is devastating to the parents who just want to raise their children successfully. Since Helen Keller challenged the Lions to be “Knights of the Blind” we have been focused on that area of suffering. Our leadership is asking us to look in the other areas and be as energetic toward them as we have Vision and Hearing. In other words they just want us to Be A Lion. Let us do so.

“Just Being Lions”

CATCH A DREAM - This is my call to all Lions in District 21B, indeed to all Lions in MD21. Catch a Dream, a Passion, and a personal need to SERVE.

You’ve all heard a message like this before, stated in many ways. It’s just that I truly believe it’s what we were drawn into Lions Clubs International to do! WE SERVE! Do you personally live by this motto? How do you and your club serve? Have you really explored your community needs and found how best to serve them? Do you just continue to do the projects or activities you’ve always been doing? Is your club invisible to the community?

You see, I’m fairly certain everyone has heard that Lions are “aging out”. Too many

of us are just running out of energy, ideas, and time to keep many of our clubs alive. I contend that our approach to serving the needs of our communities IS our problem in membership and leadership. We should be looking at re-discovering what the people around us feel is most important.

I’m not here to tell you this is an easy task or one we can easily restructure our older projects around, but through re-defining community needs and strengthening our club response to those needs, more friends and neighbors will want to be part of the dream.

Don’t just ask everyone you meet to join your club. Instead, ask folks showing interest in projects to share with you. Don’t

push everybody to join, just ask them to help us accomplish set goals meeting the needs of their community. People haven’t lost desire to help or volunteer, but the reality of our society is that many have no desire to being pushed into joining anything. They may just want to help. Once you’ve found ways to engage your non-member community and make it theirs also, they’ll probably ask you to join.

THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO!Find the needs, develop as many visible

projects and activities as you are able. Always invite others to help. Teach our creed of service. Let what you do, show others your Lion Dream of Service.

EMERGING VOICES IN SERVANT LEADERSHIP After several months of brainstorming, we believe our choice

for this incoming year's theme for Lions District 21 C is timely and relevant: EMERGING VOICES IN SERVANT LEADERSHIP.

I strongly believe in "being out of the box" --- that is, being creative and innovative --- in whatever I think, say, and do.

For LIONISM to be effective in its goals and objectives, we need to reach out to places close to our hearts BUT are beyond the horizon --- in places that are sometimes not well-traveled or off the beaten path in our Lions world of volunteerism.

What is LIONISM, first and foremost? Lionism, in its simplest definition, is the desire to be happy. We do not want people to be miserable. We want THEM

to be happy. WE want to be happy. So --- How do we make ourselves and other people happy? Through SERVICE. When WE SERVE, we give a little something of ourselves ---

the best part of ourselves --- our capacity to love unconditionally even if it is for a few seconds, a few minutes, a few days, OR a lifetime.

You now fully understand why Lions International's motto is --- WE SERVE.

Which brings us to the next question. WHO DO WE SERVE? Everyone who is in need. It is a broad definition yet it allows YOU to control what and

how to serve with whatever Lions International, through your club, can provide.

Here is the next question. HOW DO WE GET MORE PEOPLE TO JOIN US IN THE

LIONS MOVEMENT --- THE "WE SERVE" MOVEMENT? My favorite answer is: BY EXAMPLE. When you bring your child or your young friend with you to

volunteer. When a stranger asks you what being a Lion is all about. When you are working with other volunteers in a collaborative

project. When you are friendly, helpful, compassionate, and kind. When you remember that a Lions club is about bringing your

family and friends together --- especially new friends --- to serve with compassion AND when the occasion merits it, with lots of laughter and fun.

When you read the by-laws of Lions International and fully understand and accept the concept of strategic succession planning so we are better prepared for leadership tasks and responsibilities.

When you provide order and professionalism in your meetings and activities by following the basics of Robert's Rules of Order.

That's what I mean BY EXAMPLE.

This brings us to the theme, EMERGING VOICES IN SERVANT LEADERSHIP.

This is all about hearing the voices of WHO WE SERVE and WHO WE WANT TO JOIN US.

First, we need to update ourselves with the latest information about WHO WE SERVE. It can be through a friend, a non-profit organization, or through the news or blogs. Look near --- and then look far.

Second, WHO WE WANT TO JOIN US. There are two groups that need a little more motivation --- all

right, perhaps a little more pushing. WOMEN AND YOUTH. Women are a natural for the LIONS movement. They're

WHOLE-LISTIC. That's w-h-o-l-e as in well-rounded. You can see it. A woman is in the kitchen. She's keeping a watchful eye on her baby, cooking, and taking a phone call --- yes, multi-tasking BUT performing one task at a time.

In the LIONS world, women are considered our NEW VOICES. In many parts of the world, women are under-represented in Lions. In the US, we are about 50% represented, maybe. We could do another survey in our district to find out.

Let's define youth. First, these are the millennials, the babies born between 1982 and 2000, according to the US Census Bureau. These are the 19 year old to 37 year old men and women around us.

I quote: "They are the largest generation in the workforce because of their birth years. Millennials are the children of the baby boomers and are also called the Generation Y or Gen Y. They possess several qualities and characteristics different from the past generations. And although the characteristics of a millennial varies on the culture and environment, they grew up in; these are the common characteristics of millennials today."

Second, youth means GEN Z or Generation Z. Who are they? I quote: "Gen Z is the mobile-first generation that appears to

live equally in the digital world as in the real one. Smartphones, the devices of choice, are always close by and within reach. With a phone to keep them connected, Gen Z is full of dichotomies: their device distracts them from boredom and gives them something to do during downtime, yet it saves time by being efficient."

Here's what I think: Take advantage of their digital citizenship

and learn from them --- and we can show them our world of interaction, our world of work and play.

This leads us to SERVANT LEADERSHIP. What is a servant leader? According to Skip Pritchard, a

successful author and thought leader, "Servant leaders lead with others in mind." Very profound and very simple.

Mr. Pritchard defines servant leadership as "a blend and balance between leader and servant."

What are the qualities of a servant leader? Let me name a few. A servant leader is one who:

1. Values diverse opinions.2. Cultivates a culture of trust.3. Develops other leaders.4. Helps people with life issues, not just work issues.5. Encourages.6. Sells instead of tells.7. Thinks YOU, not ME.8. Thinks long-term.9. Acts with humility. This brings me to my CALL TO ACTION for us during my term

as District Governor: IDENTIFY THE EMERGING VOICES IN SERVANT LEADERSHIP. Then, invite them to join you in an activity, an event, or a meeting. Let them ask a lot of questions about why WE SERVE. Ask help from your club or district leaders if you are looking for answers.

For our Lions year 2019-2020, we want to make sure that we all work towards the common goals of the multiple District. We want to support International President Jung-Yul Choi's 100 % Club Participation in LCIF's Campaign 100. I also believe in strong collaboration and working as a team with my fellow District Governors: DG Chris Gibbs (21 B) and DG David Pryce (21A) on our membership drive initiatives coupled with service initiatives. I have started a Leo contest to create a logo that embodies my theme for this year. The winning design will get the top prize of $500 plus this logo will be in our District Stationery, Business Cards, and my proposed newsletter for this year " The Vision",

I have already talked to a couple of cultural groups and we are currently in the process of Chartering a Chinese Lions Club and an African American Lions Club. The one common thread that we all want to strive for is service to our communities. There are a myriad opportunities to serve out there, we just need to identify the ones where we can serve with the greatest impact. As Lions we all do our share of helping to make this world a brighter place just because we are in it,

I am really looking forward to working with all of you during my term as District Governor.

I would like to join you in one of your service projects, one club at a time, please.

I'd like to get to know you better. I would like to know HOW to serve you.

Go, Lions! We serve!
