DISTRICT 21 A DG Jack Buckles

“The three great essentials to achieve anything worthwhile are: first, hard work; second, stick-to-itiveness; and third, commonsense.”Thomas Edison

Well we had a great time at the Convention in Wickenburg. Thanks to all that attended and thanks for all your support. One of the things that came out of the Council meeting on Friday, was we at are going to move forward to reorganize the Multiple District. I hope that the clubs will still support and build our membership. If we let down now, we may have no chance at keeping Lionism in the state. I hope we as Lions are committed to rebuilding our Lion community. New younger members are the answer. The leadership must come from our many new Lions. We must change the way we are doing business. Well enough about that.

As I go around the district I see many new projects taking place and many of the old successful projects being worked on. Peoria Pioneer Lions Club had a fantastic rummage sale. Next I see that Health & Wellness is still in full swing. We have new members working across club lines and district lines. Then we have a club working on the Blue Print Program in the Peoria area. It’s great to see that there is an attitude of we are all Lions trying to better ourselves and our community.

Next we have a Convention in Sierra Vista on March 17,2017 and another one March 31 at Camp Tatiyee. Hope to see all of you there.

Yours in LionismJack Buckles

The 61st Annual Buckeye Lions Club Lanier Calvert Track & Field Championships were held on March 4, 2017 at the Roberts-Smith Track Complex on the campus of Buckeye Union High School.

23 schools from all classifications competed. This meet was chronicled in a 2008 issue of the Lion Magazine as one of the Top 5 Lions sponsored events in the US.

Team champion on the boys’ side was Gila Ridge with 91 points, with Valley Vista and Shadow Ridge tied for second with 65. Gila Ridge also took home the girls championship with 108 points, with Valley Vista second at 78 and Liberty third at 61.

In commemoration of the Lions Clubs Centennial and the Buckeye Lions Club’s 70th Anniversary in 2017, the team championship trophies were adorned with first-day proofs of the US Mint’s newest silver dollar honoring the 100 years of Lions in the United States.

Lee Williams High School in Kingman won the second annual eyeglass donation competition and was awarded a $100 gift card to Little Caesar’s Pizza and will be presented with a plaque by 21A 1st VDG Tom Price at the April 11 Kingman School Board meeting.

FLAGS FOR 1ST GRADERSOne of the projects of the the Sun City Midweek Bell Lions Club is the FLAGS for 1st Graders.

This program also called “The American Flag Program” provides information about the history of the flag, and highlights patriotism. The first graders are then given a small flag of their own. Many of these young people continue to have the flag given to them when they are in High School. This year Lion John Bliss (pictured in the classroom) visited first graders and told them about the flag and presented flags. Also presenting a program to 1st graders was Lion Becky White and Lion Jan Wagner.

PCC Jim Sterenberg Speaker At Sun City Midweek Bell Lions Club

A recent speaker to the Sun City Midweek Bell Lions club was PCC Lion Jim Sterenberg the President of the Board of the Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation which is located in Phoenix but serves Arizona. The mission of the Foundation is to provide sight and hearing care to those in need. For example this year 100 people have received hearing aids, and 16 people have received surgery for either Cataracts or Diabetic Retinopathy. They have received approximately 89,600 pairs of used eyeglasses most of which will be recycled for the benefit of others, and with use of the “Spot Machines” over 20,000 people have been screened. They are bringing vision awareness to our communities. Considering joining the Lions Club and be a part of this type of service. SUN CITY LIONS FOUNDATION HONOREELion Larry Wildes was recently honored, by the Sun City Lions Foundation, with a Melvin Jones Fellowship. A Melvin Jones

Fellowship is a high honor in Lionism. Melvin Jones was the founder of the Lions Clubs 100 years ago. Lion Larry was gifted with this honor for his service. He is a member of the Sun City Midweek Bell Lions Club, where he assists with projects and fundraising, and recently volunteered his time and donated all the supplies to renovate and area of the Foundation meeting room. The Sun City Lions Foundation was formed in 1976 to provide a stronger cooperation among the Lions Clubs of Sun City and to strengthen the impact on Sun City. In 1980 Del E Webb Corp., presented the foundation a parcel of land which is where the Lions Foundation Complex is located. Tenants are charged one dollar per year for rental fee for office space. The Foundation Complex now houses the “Recreational Reading for the Blind”; Northwest Valley Connect ; “the Jewish Federation (family Services) and the Office of the Sun City Lions Foundation, Inc. The Sun City West Lions clubs were invited to join the foundation group in 1982. Throughout the years over $4 million has been donated to various charities throughout the local area by the Sun City Lions Foundation.

Sun City Midweek Bell Lions Club Hosts Multi Club MeetingThe Sun City Midweek Bell Lions Club hosted a multi club meeting to discuss fundraising ideas, and how to further be

of benefit to the community. Special Guest Speaker was Past International Director Dave Roberts, his wife PDG Ann also attended. Others in attendance were Presidents and spouses from the Sun City Host Club, the Sun Village Club of Surprise, and the Sun City Early Birds Lions Club. Other guests included a representative from the Arizona Foundation, and the Canyon City State Lion (the Lions State Web site) and a guest from the Peoria Chamber of Commerce.

DISTRICT 21 BDG Jim Whelan

It’s hard to believe that this Lionistic year is already 2/3’s past. I have visited almost all the clubs and have been astonished by the amount of activities that many of the clubs have accomplished. All of the clubs by now should be getting ready to complete their club election of officers

and submit the information to Lions Club International. Training for club officers this year will be conducted by district and NOT at the MD convention. Club officers, get an early start by visiting the online training for club officers. Our vision screening in the district is growing and growing, so keep up the great work. The referral rate is somewhere around 20% which indicates there is a real need for this service we provide.

The most important news is that we as a multiple district are not growing. As I look at the data provided by Lions Clubs International each month I see that we do a pretty good job or recruiting new members. BUT the number of Lions that leave each month is just about equal to those that enter. This means we need to find out why these Lions leave and plug the hole. They leave according to 1st VP Dr. Naresh Aggarwal, because we failed to provide a positive membership experience through meaningful service opportunities. VP Aggarwal also states:

“Prospective members should be invited to assist with service projects that speak to their humanitarian interests. If established members are disheartened by the lack of impact their clubs are making, encourage them to become club officers. These members should be asked to lead the change. Encourage them to be the driving forces that answer the needs of their communities with impassioned service projects. I urge you to invest in your legacy by retaining the members we have worked so hard to attain.”

At the 3rd Council meeting in Wickenburg the council took the first steps to move from three districts to two districts. This is all because of the lack of membership. There are many reasons to move from three to two districts which will be explained at the upcoming conventions. We will be actively seeking ways to improve our recruiting of new members for existing and new clubs. If you have concrete ideas please let us know.

Don’t forget to register for the MD State Convention to be held from May 19 to May 21 at the Sheraton Four Points in Awatukee. Our International Director will be Howard Hudson from California.

SOUTH TUCSON LIONS CLUB

1947 2017

Greetings,

For the last 70 years, the South Tucson Lions Club has provided volunteer services and financial assistance

to those in need throughout the southwest area of Tucson. As you may or may not know, Lions Club

International is the largest service organization in the world. While our focus internationally is on sight related

projects, we do far more than that at a local level. This includes community projects such as cleaning parks,

taking 60+ underprivileged children Christmas shopping for clothes and shoes, supporting youth Mariachi, and

of course, vision conservation. This year alone, South Tucson members have vision screened over 20,000

children in the Tucson area. Not only do we screen these children, we have a system in place to ensure that

those who cannot afford the exam and glasses will still be taken care of. We are one of the most recognized

locally based service organizations made up of men and women of all walks of life and from all over Tucson

whose only purpose is “TO SERVE.”

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT. To be able do all of this we must raise funds. One of the ways we raise

money is our Annual South Tucson Lions Golf Tournament. This “FUNdraiser” not only provides us with

needed financial support for our charity work, but is also an opportunity to bring together golfers who want to

have fun while also supporting projects that help their community.

Will YOU be a part of this effort to “serve” our community? You can do so in the following ways:

-BECOME A CORPORATE SPONSOR ($400.00) includes foursome and tee box sign

-SPONSOR A FOURSOME (300.00) includes green fees, cart, lunch, and prizes

-SPONSOR A HOLE ($100.00)

-PLAY IN THE TOURNAMENT ($75.00) includes green fees, cart, lunch, and prizes

-DONATE A PRIZE (S)

The tournament will be Saturday April 29, 2017 at the historic and fun to play EL RIO Golf Course,

1400 W. Speedway. See attached flyer/entry form for details.

Thank you for your support and/or consideration,

VISION SCREENING IS A YEAR ROUND PROJECTSubmitted by Lion Richard Stevenson

Arizona has approximately 1,500,000 children in 230 School Districts, 406 charter schools, 13 Joint Technological Education Districts and countless preschools. As a result, any Lions Club desiring to do vision screening with children has an almost unlimited client base to choose from. When the larger urban districts have completed their vision screening for the year by Christmas, you can still find gold in the charters, smaller and rural districts and preschools. We just screened a charter with 700 children that had not been screened since 2011 and the referral rate was 25%. A list of all school districts and charters from the State of Arizona will give you your target market. An email offering to bring State Certified Vision Screeners with the latest technology to screen every child for vision and color, fulfilling all of the State recommendations for vision, along with references from previous successful screenings, will almost always yield positive results. Now is also a good time to go after preschools and also pick up on the absences from the schools you screened last Fall. Now you will find that the pressure is off of the SPOT machines at the Vision Center and Sight and Hearing so that you can check out these devices more easily. Since January our club has been able to screen 5,000+ children. As soon as you are finished with Spring screening you can begin scheduling schools for August before everyone leaves for the Summer. This is also a good time for training including State Certification training. WE SERVE

APOLOGY FROM PCC LION JIM STERENBERGI would like to apologize to the lions of 21B for not attending your cabinet/convention. I threw my back

out the day before I was supposed to leave to drive to Sierra Vista for your cabinet/convention, was put on muscle relaxants and was told not to drive. Drive????? I could barely walk!!! I want to thank vice district governor Lion Bobbie Ravenkamp for filling in for me.

District 21B has a couple of openings for your Lions Sight and Hearing Board. We are a very active board but not as active in 21B as we would like to be. A couple more dedicated lions from 21B would help. Again, I apologize for not being able to attend the Cabinet/Convention in Sierra Vista, but look forward to seeing you at the State Convention in May. If you have any questions about your Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation, do not hesitate to contact me, a Lions Sight and Hearing Board Member, or your Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation office.

Yours in lionismPCC Lion Doc SterenbergPresident Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation

DISTRICT 21 C

Submitted by: DG Rosemarie A Gabriel “Service Makes Hearts Roar”Happy Spring everyone!

As of this writing, we are 1½ weeks away from attending our District 21C Convention and Health Fair at Camp Tatiyee. I hope many of you have already registered. We welcome our Lions, Lionesses, Leos and Cubs family in Arizona and their guests. I want to thank everybody, in advance, who will make it up to the mountain where a great time of learning, serving and having fun awaits them. Our special guests, ID Bill Phillipi and his wife Vickie are flying in from the international board meeting in Greece. I am sure he will share with us new and exciting information about our organization. Here’s to all the beautiful memories we will make together. This humongous event is made possible because of everybody’s helping hands. Thank you again for your teamwork spirit! Let’s go back to our clubs energized, passionate about what we do and share our wonderful experiences.

Good Luck to fellow Lions running for club officer positions. Thank you for stepping up! I wish you the best in your Lions journey. Club secretaries need to file PU101s online with LCI after the club completes their election. There is an added club leadership opportunity this coming Lion year, the LCIF Coordinator. The training for this new position will be held in May at the State Convention. Please save the date, June 10, for the Club Officers Training to be held at Lions Foundation of Arizona (LFA) bldg. Details will follow soon. Information will be shared, such as the increase in new membership fees, new GMT and GLT programs, etc. that would assist officers in planning a great year.

The last of the 4 service challenge areas, “Protecting the Environment”, will be recognized in a district-wide event on April 22nd which happens to be Earth Day, too. Let’s make our planet a little greener, healthier and beautiful for future generations. Please send pictures of various ongoing club service projects to the Canyon State newsletter, Roaring Pride, Facebook and 21C website.

It’s never too late to roar in new members through service and be on the lookout for new centennial clubs to join us in serving our communities. Be mindful of your club dues, on time submission of MMR, service activity report, 990 report, etc. to be eligible for the quarterly club excellence award.

We are not winding down but gearing up the upcoming events, such as the State convention on May 19-21 at the Sheraton Four Points. I hope to see you there. Are you all set to go to the monumental event of our 100th anniversary celebration in Chicago on June 30-July 4? Did you order your International Parade shirts? Please check out the Canyon State newsletter for a calendar of upcoming events.

Kindly send in your completed S.M.I.L.E campaign sheet by the end of this month, April, to Lion Laura to be eligible to win a prize. The form is also included in this issue. This will assist us in planning future events. Thank you for your participation.

Let’s spring to action this beautiful season to climb new mountains. Thank you, once again, for making our District grow and roar with passion! A quote from Leo Buscaglia,“Your talent is God’s gift to you. What you do with it is your gift back to God.”

Hello Lions of Multiple District 21, Arizona I am writing again to bring you an update in information about an opportunity for a new club project here in Arizona. This project is new to Arizona but not to Lions. LPCCI is a Lions fundraising arm for CCI or Canine Companions for Independence. Our organization raises dogs from puppies to be assistance dogs much like many other groups. We have training facilities across the country to try to meet the needs on needy children, adults and veterans. One thing to be aware of is our recipients get the dog, training and support for free through Lions. If you have ever tried to acquire a service dog you know there is many places but only through LPCCI/CCI can you get one free when qualified. The work of the individual clubs is all about awareness for your communities. We make presentations anywhere we are invited and the application is easy and on line. Interested? First look at one or both of these links to see what we do. www.lpcci.com www.cci.org After that if your club is interested in joining our project or simply making donations please contact me.
