Lutheran Disaster Response Nepal Area Earthquake

Devastating images and stories are coming out of Nepal following a 7.8 magnitude earthquake on April 25. Sections of Kathmandu, the nation’s capital, and surrounding areas lie in rubble. More than 3,500 people have lost their lives, and the number continues to rise as officials make their way through rural communities. Historic buildings and houses have been leveled; roads are destroyed. The need for food, water, medical care, blankets and shelter is great.

Lutheran Disaster Response is already actively networking with partners such as The Lutheran World Federation (LWF), Lutheran World Relief, and the ACT Alliance who are already on the ground. LWF’s office in Kathmandu escaped the worst of the impact of the quake and has already launched a large-scale emergency response. Your gifts are needed now. Every gift designated to the “Nepal Area Earthquake” through Lutheran Disaster Response will be used entirely – 100 percent – to help those impacted by the quake rebuild their lives and livelihoods.

If you would like to make a donation checks should be made payable to: Lutheran Disaster Response and write “Nepal Area Earthquake” in the memo line. You can include this in today’s offering plate or mail directly to Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, ELCA Gifts Processing Center, PO Box 1809, Merrifield, VA 22116-8009.

Personnel Update We celebrate that our White Lake Worship Leader

and keyboard player Matthew Fuhrman continues to step into new career paths and life callings. Earlier this year he left his Administrative Assistant position at Calvary to pursue a new career as a financial consultant. His aspirations are to combine full time financial planning with part time worship leadership. To that end Matt is has accepted a position to be the Praise Band Leader at 1st Congregational Church in Clarkston on Sunday mornings. He will continue to serve as our White Lake Worship Leader on Saturday evenings. Our prayers are with Matt as his new career paths continue to unfold.

Men’s Breakfast Bible Study Will meet each week in the Clarkston Coffee Center at 6:15 am this Wednesday morning. There is always an empty chair, so you are invited to join us! Staff Contact: Pr. Jonathan.

ELCA Youth Gathering Update Calvary has 40 youth and 6 adult chaperones going to the event. We have 7 adults serving in leadership roles on the Service Learning team to help plan the event, and several that have signed up to help as Skilled Labor & Site Captains. We are very proud to say that 6 of Calvary’s college-aged Young Adults have also said yes to serving at the event to help send off 28,000+ people on service projects. They will be personally assisting the core Service Learning Managers working out of Hart Plaza. It is no small role or task for them to take on, but they are excited to help. Contact Susan Batchik if you would like to know how to sign up as a volunteer for this event.

Meet our Architect Stephen Auger will be with us today to bring greetings and to observe our Sunday morning ministries for facility use, flow within the building and the parking lot, and to get a feel for Calvary's energy and excitement for ministry.

Stephen Auger and Associates (SA+A) has been in business for 20 years and they bring the experience of having worked with nearly 50 churches on construction and renovation projects. Steve is also very enthusiastic about his work and working with us on this project. He has been meeting with our Facility Development Team, staff and ministry leaders over the past few weeks to learn about our ministry, both the present scope and future vision, as well as to get a feel for our congregation's values and DNA.

This Pre-Design and Site Master Planning phase is a critical 1st step of working together in preparation for the major Capital Stewardship Appeal this fall and anticipated major Clarkston Campus facility enhancement and enlargement within the next couple of years to support our expanding mission. Over the summer they will be using a 3-D modeling design process and proposing architectural solutions for our ministry vision that will result in images and computer models for presentation and publication during the fall 40 Days Spiritual Growth Journey and Capital Stewardship Appeal.

Please welcome Steve with our usual warm Calvary energy and hospitality.

Guest Hospitality & Ministry Guides

We are putting together a new team to help guests navigate ministry at Calvary. From following up with first time guests to answering questions, to tracking their progress, to helping them along the Spiritual Growth Pathway. Interested in this ministry? Staff Contact: Deborah Robitaille

Capital Appeal and Facility Development Updates

The Facility Development Team has selected Stephen Auger and Associates (SAA) as the architectural firm as we envision new space and repurpose our existing space for maximum mission impact. In addition to the Advisory Team we are also forming 7 additional teams for this major initiative. Please let us know if you are interested in learning more these teams.

Capital Appeal Team led by Chris Cortez and Rick Tyler.

Communication Team - effectively communicate how the appeal and facility plans connect to the vision and mission in a compelling, consistent, scriptural and inspirational way.

Administrative Team - provide all administrative support - organizational and computers skills.

Events Team - planning and hosting special events for the appeal.

Lead Gift Team - coordinate and host events to encourage significant and joyful generosity and important lead gifts for the appeal.

Spiritual Life & Worship Team - 40 Days resources for worship, group study, prayer and personal spiritual growth that engage God's people in the joyful journey of generosity and celebrates the ministry, mission impact and God-given dreams for Calvary's future growth.

Children & Youth Ministry Team - create meaningful opportunities for children and youth to discover the joy of generosity, share their excitement about the future, and support the vision. Ambassadors - a team of "story-tellers" and group leaders who are excited about Calvary's mission and vision and willing to share the dream and "God-sightings" with others in the church

See capital appeal leaders Chris Cortez or Rick Tyler, or staff Deborah Robitaille or Pastor Jonathan for more information.

Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin’ By World

Clarkston United Methodist Church is launching a new program entitled “Getting Ahead.” This is a way for people to investigate or examine the impact that poverty has on them and their community, stabilize their living situations and build resources. Participants (called Investigators) will be paid $25 a night as compensation for their time and experience. Getting Ahead can help a person to: Identify and solve problems in a safe but challenging group-learning experience; do a self-assessment of his/her own resources; develop a plan. Groups of 6-12 participants meet with the facilitators 3 hour workshop meetings. There will be no lecturing, no teaching; the “Investigator” method will be used. 16 week program starts Wednesday, May 27

th - September 9

th, 6pm dinner (included),

class 6:30-9pm. If you are interested in participating contact Mary at CUMC by May 21st at [email protected] or call 248-625-1611 for more information.

Blessings in a Backpack Our next day packing food for Blessings in a Backpack will be May 27. We are in need of some extra help because we have over 300 backpacks to pack. The location is on Dixie Highway at the Waypoint Free Methodist Church where the old Saturn dealership used to be on the Northeast corner just past I-75. Packing begins at 5:00pm and lasts about an hour prior to their youth programming. Any strong able people who can assist loading tubs into delivery trucks are most welcome.

If you are able to assist, please contact Claudia Jenosky at 248-563-3927. If you would like to be included on the distribution list for packing in the fall please fill out an In Touch card today with your contact information.

Assistance Coordinator Calvary Administration Office processes over 100 request from the community each year for financial assistance. Some of that assistance includes rent or mortgage help to keep people in their homes or utility shut off assistance, along with referrals for food or other needs. If you would like to learn about this ministry, let us know! Some computer skills 2-4 hours per week and a compassionate heart are the necessary tools. Staff Contact: Deborah Robitaille
