IN THE SPOTLIGHT:

MRS. RUNYON’S KINDERGARTEN CLASS By: Elizabeth Oakes

Want to know the buzz in Mrs. Runyon’s Kindergarten class? Well, here it is! “In Bible we are studying what sin is and Noah’s ark,” Mrs. Runyon says, “In phonics we are studying short vowel sounds. In math we’re counting to 40. And in science we are studying buoyancy and floating. We will be conducting an experiment on these. The kids really love science!” Mrs. Runyon has been teaching for seven years: four years in preschool and three years in kindergarten.

Mrs. Runyon combines fun and creativity with a strong desire to impact the lives of children spiritually, academically, socially and emotionally.-Calvary Staff

It is obvious that her students love theirclass. When interviewed, six year oldWilliam Landon described Mrs. Runyonas nice and loveable yet keeps them inline. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 as “Sofun it’s like not even school”, he rates hisclass as a nine. Mrs. Runyon’s class is fullof fun and activity and deserves to be inthe October Classroom Spotlight.

Mrs. Runyon “rocks” at decorating bulletin boards for her classroom.

THE BOOK FAIR By Elizabeth Oakes

The book fair was a huge success! Whether you were three or thirteen, there was a book for you. We hope you were able to “Saddle Up and Read” because the book fair had a Wild West theme. Many students came to school on Wednesday decked out in their best western attire. At the book fair, there were historical fiction, graphic novels, science fiction, picture books, and more. There was a book for everyone. The book fair had a total of 308 sales and made a profit of

$1,500 for the school. Our Calvary readers have also taken 626 AR quizzes since the beginning of the school year. That means that in a little over 5 weeks, our students take on average about 125 tests a week! Our school is full of some serious readers. The book fair was a successful event and all the Calvary readers enjoyed its stay and are already anticipating its return in the spring!

MR. HESS- A MAN WITH A CALLING By: Katelyn Deal

There is a man who is a superhero in many students’ minds. This man works very diligently in a role that he loves and is happy to fill. It’s the role of principal here at CCS. His name is Mr. Hess.

Mr. Hess’s “normal” day is full of variety and lots of tasks, whether big or small, to accomplish. He arrives at school at 6:30 in the morning and greets the students as they come into the school. He does many other jobs such as keeping track of absences, reading every teacher’s lesson plans, writing a staff newsletter daily, helping in the lunch room, visiting classes, directing pre-school and

elementary/middle school dismissal, and helping with after- care. He doesn’t usually leave until 5:15! Mr. Hess has had a wide range of experience before he even came to Calvary. Although he was a teacher for 7 years and loved it, he has now been a principal for 14 years. CCS is his third school as principal.

He even served as a principal in the Dominican Republic in Central America! He loves being with kids a lot. He felt God calling him to work with kids, and he has followed that call wholeheartedly.

He is a great man who deserves our highest respect. So if you see Mr. Hess in the hall, give him a high five and tell him that you appreciate all he is doing for us.

Our principal, Mr. Ned Hess.

DEAR CAL Who is Cal?

Cal is a middle schooler who answers your questions about daily problems. If you have any questions for Cal, you can submit them to Mr. Hess’s mailbox outside his office. Who knows, your question may show up in the Calvary Chronicles!

Q: Dear Cal,

I do well in all my schoolwork except one area – tests. I study hard and I feel confident before the test, but whenever I actually take the test, I get nervous and I can’t concentrate. I forget all the things that I studied! What should I do? Sincerely,

Anxious Tester

A: Dear Anxious Tester,

There are many ways to try to prevent test anxiety. First, be sure to get plenty of sleep the night before and eat a good breakfast full of protein the day of a test. If you aren’t already, be sure to be studying hard and ask a teacher or parent for extra help. Also, try praying before a test. God will hear you and help you in some way, even if that way isn’t getting an A on a test.

Good Luck,

Cal
