Location

Climneti Cciulata Spais situated in Vlcea County(included from the administrative

point of view in South-West OlteniaDevelopment Region) at the bottomof Meridional Carpathians, on the

banks of river Olt. The spa stretchesalongside the European Road 81(NR 7), 18 km north from RmnicuVlcea, 81 km south from Sibiu andat 187 km from Bucharest.

Climneti Town, with itscomponent place Cciulata, aremaking- up Climneti Cciulataspa, avowed as spa through Gouvernment Decision no. 1122/2002.

Climneti Town includes besides Climneti, Cozia and Cciulata spa also Pua,Jiblea Veche, Jiblea Nou and Seaca villages. It has a surface of 10.632 ha out of which264 ha represent the inner town. It is declared town since 1927.

Studied area is characterized through a complex economic and social life which isdescribed by human potential and the economic one, by civilization and culture elements.

privatized in accord with deed of conveyance no.166/12.06.1999, concluded with Private PropertyFund, for an investment program as far as31.05.2002 to the amount of 1.462.481 $. Thecompany has a number of 510 employees who can

be found in medical activities (doctors, kinetictherapists, nurses, auxiliary personal), guard andPSI (work safety) activities , reparation and cleaning activities, accommodation andcatering activities (310 employees), auxiliary activities ( employees).

In the past years, other companies has invest in tourism and so newhotels, pensions and restaurant appeared in Calimanesti resort.

Antropic capital The stabile population of Climneti in 1st March 2002 counted 8.564 inhabitants,

which represent 2,1% of County population. During 1995 and 2002 there was a diminutionin the inhabitants number in concordance with birth rate diminution, population ageingand population emigration towards larger cities. The dwelling number in 2002 was 3147.

The average density in territory is 80,8 inhabitants/km 2, level which is better thanCounty average (71,7 inhabitants./km 2). In fact, the population density is higher, thanks tothe tourists who came in the spa every year.

Tourism activities brief introduction about Valcea county

Regarding the tourism infrastructure at South- West Region level and Vlcea Countylevel there can be registered the following tendencies:

At 2003 level, South-West Region totalize 5.5% from Romanian accommodation places, 6.4% from tourist circulation and 9.2% from overnights number registered inRomania, having a capacity utilization index which is superior to the country average,respectively 44.4 compared to 34.6%.

At 2003 level, the tourist activity in Vlcea County is unfolding in 119accommodation units, with an accommodation capacity of 4,409 places, in decrease by21.9% compared with 1991, due to retrocession of some villas to former owners fromGovora spa and Olneti spa, as well to the removal from tourist circuit of some villasfrom Govora spa, as a consequence of inadequate accommodation conditions.

Vlcea County totalized 3.9 from Romania accommodation capacity (70,7% of regional accommodation capacity) and it has the most developed tourist infrastructure inthe region.

The tourist circulation at Vlcea County level registered falls from year to year (compared to 1991 the reduction was 47.2%). The tourists number arrived in the county at2003 level amounted to 188,362, which stand for 3.7% of tourist circuit in Romania and58.1% of the regional one.

Average length of stays in Vlcea County is higher to the national and regionalaverage because of the powerful influence exerted by the balneary tourism, where can be

found over 9 days lengths.The capacity utilization index is 53.9% in Vlcea County which is higher than theregional one (44.4%) and than the national one (34.6%).

Moreover, the tourist offer in Vlcea County, diverse and generous, is addressing allsocial categories, from mountain sports fans to the old age representatives, for whom theVlcea watering places microclimate are truly a blessing.

Valcea is the lowest county affected by a decrease in tourist activities. Decreasingtrends registered in tourism are mitigated by the so- called social tourism whichrepresents the flow of tourists visiting the region thanks to the state budget subsidies. In

fact, the accommodation in balneary spas is subject to subsidies provided for persons thatsuffer from specific diseases and for elderly people. This segment of tourism is, bydefinition, characterized by reduced costs (in Valcea 52% of total accommodation placesand 70% of the number of balneary spa tourists). Therefore the regional strategy supportsthe diversification of mountain regional tourism and in localities, limiting the publicinvestments in spas by means of projects demonstrating a high degree of return oninvestment at present there is no project in the regional portfolio for balneary spas).

Caciulata spring at the begining of XXth century

Climneti - Cciulata Spa

Climneti Cciulata Spa is located along the European Road E81 (DN 7) at 18km northern of Rmnicu Vlcea, 81 km southern of Sibiu and at 187 km away fromBucharest. It has a surface of 10,632 ha out of which 264 ha represent the inner city. It has

been declared city since 1927. The areastudied is characterized by a complexeconomic-social life given by the humanand economic potential; and the civilizationand culture elements.

Considered as pearl of the spas on OltValley , Climneti - Cciulata isrenowned for the therapeutic effects of itsmineral waters, for its bio-climate and for the great number of tourist attractions inthe area. According to the NationalInstitute for Recovery, Physical Medicineand Balneary Climatology Ministry of Health and Family, Calimanesti Caciulataspa is part of in the general interest

balneary spas from Romania.In the same time, according to

governmental provision no 1122/2002, the General Department of Authorization of the

National Authority of Constructions and Tourism states that Calimanesti Caciulata, asspa, has substantial mineral resources, scientifically proven and traditionally recognized asefficient in therapies specific installations for cure and have an organization that allows to

provide balneary medical assistance in corresponding conditions.

Br ief hi story Proofs of using the mineral waters in the area Climneti- Cciulata date back since

Romans time, who constructed fortifications and hot springs. Caciulata, together withCalimanesti are certified documentarily since 1388. Later on, monks of Cozia Monastery

constructed a bath for treatment used, among others, by Mircea The Old and MateiBasarab, rulers of ara Romneasca. The mineral springs, known since

Romans and Dacian times are brought to their value starting with 1830. Dr. Caillat presentedmineral waters from here in the "L'Unionmedicale" in1859. In 1873water fromClimneti -Cciulata were

presented inthe collection

of mineral waters at the exhibition in Vienna, and in 1893 were awarded with DiplomaGrand Prix and the gold medal.

Between 1882 and 1884 the balneary complex was constructed in Calimneti,equipped with full range services for accommodation, meal and treatment, and after 1884new fountain capitations have been done. Also the construction of the second balnearycomplex was started, and

by the end of the 19th

century has started the bottling of mineral water of Cciulata. In the same time with th e introduction of electricity, Climneti was declaredofficially among the spas in the countries. The first pavilions for mineral water treatmentare dated in 1910. In 1927, Climneti-Cciulata became a town.

Climate Climneti- Cciulata enjoysa continental temperate climate, with no sudden

changes in temperature, characterized bythe sub Carpathians falls. The averagetemperature is 9,7 Celsius degrees, theaverage temperature in July 19 Celsiusdegrees, and in January -1,5 Celsiusdegree. The annual precipitation is 750-800 mm, the period of sunshine being 110days and relative humidity of the year iscomprised between 60 and 80%. Wind istargeted towards Olt Valley (N-Wdirection). During summer time, amountain pleasant breeze can be sensed.

Hydrography.

The main water course is represented byOlt River, in addition to which there are thefountains that make the spa famous. Olt branches are: Pua and Sltrucul river onthe left side and Puturoasa, Cciulata andCldrile rivers on the right side, with ageneral orientation E-W.

Flora and fauna

The micro-climateof the spa provides theconditions for thedevelopment of a richflora and fauna. Out of the spa surface, almosthalf is covered byforestry: 13% coniferoustrees and 87% broad

leaved trees. Among coniferous trees: deal 70%, spruce 30%. Among broad leaved treesthe beech is predominant, followed by other types such as: oaks, maple, birch, aspen,sallow. The herbal layer from the spa forests is made of fern. In the summer time, the hillsare covered by a green layer of grass and various flowers such as mountain daffodils,Melandryum nemorale, Alyssum incanum and others.

Fauna from this areaincludes dears, brown bear,mountain cock, woodpecker,kite and others. On Narutu onecan see the chamois, marten,

badger and various singing birds: nightingale, chaffinch andothers. In the leaves there arealso small animals; salamander and various types of snakes.

Natural therapeutic factors which can be found in Climneti Cciulata spa are: Sedative Biocli mate - surrounded by forests, the spa benefits of fresh air, rich inozone.

M ineral waters rich in sulphur, chlorines, bromurate, soda, calcium, magneziumiodine, bicarbonate, mainly hypotonic, but also hypertonic, having variable

chemical composition and temperatures (minerals between 0,5 and 11,5 gr/l;athermal, mezothermal 41 Celsius degrees and hyper thermal 49,5 Celsiusdegrees). There are 12 athermal fountains and 3 thermal fountains in the spa.

Natural tourist resources from the spa and surroundings are represented by:

Cozia Mountain - mountain massif from South-West Fagaras Mountain that showsinteresting relief forms. The maximum height is of 1660 m (Cozia top)

Cozia National Parc - The Cozia Massif is crossed by

Olt river's waters in Gura Lotrului gorge. From botanical point of view, there is one of the most valuable plantscollections in the country. Only in floral field there areidentified almost800 decorativespecies. Also, thefauna is wellrepresented, themost importantspecies are thechamois and thelaughter, but alsothere are

Mediterranean species such as the scorpionand the viper with horn .

The Gorge of Ol t r iver - an integral part of the park, it is an ecological corridor opened to birds in their immigration to Europe.

Olt r iver - On a distance of 40km (between Turnu Rosu and Calimanesti), Olt

river forms one of the spectacular gorge from Romanian Carpathians, being able to crossthe Meridional Carpathians from North to South Climneti.

Capatanii M ountains - stretch from Calimanesti to Vaideeni, having the highestelevations in the west part of Narutiu massif (1.550 m

in Carligele Olanesti). From thisgeographical node, a large number of ridges incline towards Olt River having the highest peaks: Sturii -

1.380 m, Foarfeca - 857 m, PlaiulLotriorului - 876 m, VrfulOlnetilor - 1.416 m, DosulPmntului- 1.219 m, Fruntea luiDat - 1.1.79 m.

The pyramids fromStancioiului Valley (RamnicuValcea). This is known under thename of Pyramids of Land,

The assembly of Cozia Monastery,the oldest and the most important monumentof architecture and medieval art fromWalachia is situated at 5 km from the spa anddates from 1387-1388, being the foundation

of Mircea the Oldest ruler who had been buried here. At Monastery, mural pictures can be seen dating from 1391. The museum of Cozia Monastery has a valuable collection of icons.

From Cozia architectural assembly BolniteiChurch stands out and it is built at the

beginning of XVI century, keeping inside original frescos, among the painted faces beingthat of Mircea The Old and his son. The museum of Cozia Monastery has a valuable iconscollection. It is a UNESCO monument.

Turnu Monastery was built in 1676 byVarlaam Metropolitan and it is a historical monumentand religious architecture. Near this old monasteryestablishment, some well-known historical vestiges can

be seen even today: "Arutela" Romanian fortification,

the rock named "Traian`s Table" and thermal bathsfrom Bivolari - on left bank of Olt river.

Ostrov Hermitage was founded by Neagoe Basarab and builtduring 1518-1522. It is situatedon an island in the middle of Oltriver, where a park is alsolocated, having almost 50 speciesof trees and bushes.

Cornetu Monastery bearing the titular saint The Beheadal of St. John the Baptistis situated at 20km from the spa, near Brezoi, in Calinesti village. The monastery was built

by the nobleman Marej Basescu in 1666.

Stanisoara Monastery (5km from the spa) built in 1747, is an ancient historical

monument and has a religious architecture.The assembly of Govora Monastery , known as "Adormirea Maicii Domnului"

(Govora village, in Mihaiesti) is situated at 17 km on west side from Ramnicu Valcea, at 5km from Baile Govora and 2 km from the main road - monastic assembly, built in the first

half of XV century, the foundation of Vlad Dracul,finished by Radu cel Mare.(1495 - 1508). This is one of the oldest and valuable religious architectural monumentsfrom Oltenia. It was entirely repaired and built by MateiBasarab (between 1640 and 1645). Between 1710 and1711, Constantin Brancoveanu (1688 -1714) amplified the

monarchic complex and rebuilt the church in his stylespirit. The Monastery owns a valuable museum of religious art. UNESCO monument.

The assembly of Hurez Monastery situated at 50km North of Ramnicu Valcea -The greatest assembly of mediaeval architecture preserved in Walachia, the mainfoundation of Constantin Brancoveanu (1688-1714), includes more buildings. The church

of Sf. Constantin and Elena emperors built during1690-1693, owns remarkable initial mural

pictures. Hurez Monastery possesses a valuablemusical collection, but also an interesting library

(almost 4.000 books). During ConstantinBrancoveanu`s period (1688-1714), the Hurezmonastery functioned as an important culturalcentre and with an intense artistic activity, with alarge library and a famous painters school. Hereare the relics of Andrew, Pantelimon, Mercurie,

Dintr -un Lemn (One Wood) Monastery is

situated at 25km South-West from Ramnicu Valcea. Themonarchic establishment was founded in the second half of XVI century, when a little church was built from the wood of one secular oak tree. It is since then that the name of churchdates. But the little church burned in XVIII. In XVI (1635),another church was founded by Preda Brancoveanu and thischurch owns a valuable collection of religious objects, ritual

books, including a Gospel from Constantin Brancoveanu period and a collection of icons with the ancient icon of God's

Mother dressed in silver, that was found in the oak tree from which it was built the firstlittle church of wood. UNESCO monument.

Cuvioasa Parascheva Church was founded by Ptracu cel Bun in 1557 and issituated in Ramnicu Valcea.

Duminica Tuturor Sfintilor Church (Ramnicu Valcea), founded in 1765, hasinternal mural paintings made in 1778. The tower is realized in the Brancoveanu`s style.

Buna Vestire Church (Rmnicu Vlcea) was founded during Mircea Ciobanureign and rebuilt by Radu Ramniceanu in 1747.

Duminica Tuturor Sfinilor Church (Rmnicu Vlcea), built in 1765, keeps theinterior mural paintings made in 1778. The turret is built in Brancovenesti style.

Bile Olneti the spa located

at 29 km from Climneti, the approachis made by the road E81 Climneti RmnicuVlcea, continued on DN64 Rmnicu Vlcea-Bile Olneti. The treatment factors arerepresented by the mineral waters rich in iodine,

Bile Govora is located in the fall area of sub Carpathians, in the NE part of Oltenia, at 33 km away from Climneti, the access is made by E81 Climneti Rmnicu Vlcea, continued by DN 67 Rmnicu Vlcea- Ocnele Mari Bile Govora.The spa is of national importance, being open in all seasons and well known for thevariety and therapeutic character of the waters rich in iodine, brome, soda, calcium,

brimstone, chlorine etc. The spa is recommended for the treatment of respiratory

diseases, degenerating diseases and rheumatic diseases, as well as for the treatment of neurological peripheral and central malfunctions, and associated diseases. The modern balneary complexes are equipped with facilities for taking baths using mineral watersrich in iodine and brimstone, applications using hot mud, pneumonic-therapies, electric-therapies, treatment apiculture products etc.

Ocnele Mari Ocnia is located at 22 km away from Climneti, theapproach is made by E81 Climneti Rmnicu Vlcea, continued by DN 67 RmnicuVlcea - Ocnele Mari - Ocnia. The spa is well known for the salted water poolsarranged in the old salt mine entrances.

MOUNTAIN AREAS . The mountain areaformidable attraction: gorges, waterfalls, caves, over 80tourist routes, marked and maintained, the possibility to

Vidra - the spa is located in a mountain area,recommended both in winter and in summer, with a special
