TOPEKA, — Kansas Secretary of StateKris Kobach is backing a bill that wouldexclude the lesser prairie chicken from feder-al protection.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports thatKobach told the Senate Natural ResourcesCommittee on Thursday that the bill wouldlikely lead to a legal battle that pits staterights against federal law.

The bill would assert state sovereigntyover nonmigratory wildlife and declare nulland void any federal law in Kansas on thelesser prairie chicken. Under the bill, stateofficials also would be allowed to charge fed-eral officials with a felony for enforcing a fed-eral law dealing with the lesser prairiechicken.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is decid-ing whether to list the lesser prairie chickenas a threatened species under theEndangered Species Act.

The ‘peel & stick’ Universal Preheater attaches to the bottom or the side of the oil pan and converts the housing into a heat transfer element. It warms the oil without burning it making cold starts easy. It can be used on gearboxes, transmissions, transfer cases, water tanks and even bulk oil tanks. The Preheater plugs into any 120 or 240 volt outlet and consists of a thin silicone fiberglass pad containing a metal grid. To install it, you clean an area on the bottom or side of the oil pan and press the pad onto it, then use silicone to seal the edges of the pad and place a flexible ceramic insulation pad over it. It is available in several models depending on the lube capacity. A 50 watt unit sells for $42 and a 350 watt unit sells for $133.

The Universal Filter Preheater Fits Diesel and Bio-Diesel Fuel Filter Housing (8” to 12” circumference, 2.5” to 4” diameter) for lube oil and hydraulic filters too. It wraps around the filter housing and reduces or eliminates the possibility of cold weather fuel gelling stopping the engine. It is easily removable and transferable and is wired for your choice of: direct current or alternating current or a convertible model combining dc and ac. Millennial consumers are becoming moreimportant to the beef industry. That’sbecause their views will impact not only cur-rent demand for beef, but demand well intothe future.

Consumers born between about 1980 and2000, account for approximately a fourth ofthe U.S. population, and about a third of alladults – more than the Baby Boomer genera-tion. Controlling about $200 billion in annu-al spending, they are certainly significant tobeef sales today.

Research conducted through the BeefCheckoff program in 2011 shows that theseconsumers don’t necessarily see food just asfuel or as sustenance. They view it as anadventure; a route to diverse cultural andsocial experiences.

The research demonstrated that whileMillennials really enjoy beef, they generallyknow very little about cooking it or shoppingfor it. Those are key deterrents for productpurchases by this group. They recognize thatbeef has benefits to good health, such asbuilding muscle and helping maintain ener-gy, but they lack basic nutritional facts aboutbeef.

Millennials are knowledge seekers. Aboutthree-quarters in the study said they wantedinformation about steaks and how to prepareand cook them, and 50 percent said theywould buy more beef if they knew more aboutthe different cuts. In fact, 54 percent said it’shard to know what cuts to choose in the meatcase.

The results of the study suggested con-sumer education could be an important toolfor marketing to Millennials. About a quar-ter of this generation said they would pick upinformation, such as recipes or brochures, atthe meat counter, compared to only 7 percentof Baby Boomers.

About 56 percent reported disappointmentin the results of a beef meal they’ve pre-pared, but another finding of the researchwas even more disconcerting: Approximately60 percent of Millennial parents said theyare limiting their children’s consumption ofred meat. In 2012, the checkoff funded aMillennial Parent study that showed thatchicken was perceived as easier to prepareand was a “kid-friendly option,” whether eat-ing at home or away from home.

These parents also perceived beef as lesshealthy than other meats. Older Millennials(ages 25-32) are cautious about preparingbeef meals for the family, and 46 percent saidthey do not find beef convenient to cook forkids.

This is where the challenge becomes anopportunity. Millennial parents want tomake the best food choices for their families,and are willing to learn. Beef ’s positivenutrition message, its versatility, its conve-nience, and its variety of lean and deliciousproducts can help this generation feel com-fortable and confident in choosing beef.

Programs being conducted through theBeef Checkoff program are reflecting theincreased focus on Millennials. Becauseresearch shows that this age group utilizesnew communications technology, more out-reach is taking place in websites andthrough social media, such as Facebook,Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest.Traditional ways of gathering informationthrough printed articles or advertisementsare less likely to be utilized by this group.They want it easily accessible throughmobile devices such as smart phones andtablets.

The Nebraska Beef Council is reaching outto this new generation of consumers throughtheir Facebook page and YouTube channel.With an educational focus in mind, theirsocial media sites provide viewers with beeffacts, cooking tips and a variety of deliciousbeef meal recipes. The Nebraska BeefCouncil plans to continue its online activityin an effort to educate Millennials on thebenefits of beef and provide them with thetools they need to feel confident preparingbeef meals.

The beef industry already has a leg up:Millennials like beef. Now it’s working to getthem more comfortable preparing the prod-uct, eating it and serving it to their families.

The Nebraska Beef Council is a non-profitorganization served by a nine-member boardof directors. The volunteers overseeNebraska’s beef checkoff and checkoff-fundedprograms. Programs for marketing and pro-motion are funded by the $1 beef checkoff.
