Richard Wolfson, Ph.D.

Dr. Richard Wolfson is Benjamin F. Wissler Professor of Physics at Middlebury College, and also teaches in Middle-bury’s Environmental

Studies Program. Dr. Wolfson holds a master’s degree in environmental studies from the University of Michigan, and a Ph.D. in physics from Dartmouth.

Dr. Murray lent her expertise for the National Geographic miniseries Skeleton Crew and has appeared on America’s Most Wanted, Skeleton Stories, New Detectives, The Decrypters and Forensic Files. An award-winning teacher, Dr. Murray created The Great Courses’Trails of Evidence: How Forensic Science Works, released in 2012 and Forensic History: Crimes, Frauds, and Scandals in 2014. Dr. Murray’s publications include numerous contributions to the Proceedings of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, as well as books and chap-ters providing anthropological analyses.

Wolfson’s current research involves the eruptive behavior of the Sun’s corona, as well as terrestrial climate change. Other published work encompasses such diverse fields as medical physics, plasma physics, solar energy engineering, electronic circuit design, nuclear issues, observational astronomy, and theoretical astrophysics. His books Nuclear Choices: A Citizen’s Guide to Nuclear Technology (MIT Press) and Simply Einstein: Relativity Demystified (W.W. Norton) exemplify Wolfson’s interest in making science accessible to nonscientists. He has also written several textbooks, published in Scientific American, and writes for World Book Encyclopedia. He has produced courses for The Great Courses, including Einstein’s Relativity and the Quantum Revolution: Modern Physics for Nonscientists (1999), Physics in Your Life (2004), Earth’s Changing Climate (2007), Physics and Our Universe: How It All Works (2011), and Understanding Modern Electronics (2014).

Wolfson has spent sabbaticals at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado; at St. Andrews University in Scotland; and at Stanford University. In 2009 he was elect-ed a Fellow of the American Physical Society.
