The McGregor Poetry Festival which took place this weekend, was the first of its kind and labelled a suc- cess by organisers (read more on page 3). Billy Kennedy, owner of Temenos in McGregor, who spearheaded the festival, says the idea of the festival is to promote McGregor as a town. He chose a poetry festival because “Mc- Gregor is a poetic town” and because of his love for poetry. But he says another reason, which should not be overlooked, is that festi- vals “make us happy”. He says the poetry festival also promotes a sense of community, because the entire town worked together to make the festival happen. Huipie Schreuder, organiser of the Bonnievale Bonanza which takes place in November each year, says al- though this festival is mainly a fund- raiser for Bonnievale High School, it has strong elements of upliftment and community building. The Bonnievale Bonanza was start- ed 18 years ago with the idea of bring- ing more tourists to Bonnievale. Its main feature was the cycling race. The high school took over the reins of the festival in 1995. The festival now boasts a range of adventure ac- tivities and top class performing art- ists. Schreuder says the performing art- ists are a real treat for the local chil- dren, who are not likely to have other opportunities to see the performers. Local entrepreneurs are given an opportunity to sell their goods and Schreuder says the visitors support the local businesses which boost the local economy. She says the festival has a yearly growth of 20%. As Schreuder listed all the positive elements of the festival, she empha- sises that education is at the core of the festival, as it provides for the fi- nancial needs of the 54% of pupils who cannot afford to pay school fees. Culture and exposure to the arts are some of the main reasons listed by Helen Gooderson of the RAD Foun- dation, which is responsible for the Breyten Breytenbach Boekefees, the Montagu Makiti Heritage Festival and the Montagu Youth Arts Festival. She explains that these festivals aim to inspire, engage en educate, es- pecially the local youth. Gooderson, however, says the festi- vals also give people a reason to visit Montagu, which is great for local tourism. She says the Makiti is a her- itage festival which promotes com- munity and showcases the town. Elizma Botha, manager of Robert- son Wine Valley, which hosts four wine festivals each year, says festi- vals are a great way to attract tourists to the area, especially in the quiet winter times. Botha explains that the Langeberg is filled with tourists in the summer with all accommodation facilities fully booked, but it is anoth- er story during the winter months. She says that is why the Robertson Wine Valley initiated the Wacky Wine Weekend, so as to attract more visitors during winter. “Festivals are a great excuse that we provide to peo- ple to visit our valley.” Although festivals like the Wacky Wine Weekend provide a reason for people to visit, other festivals, like the Robertson Slow, are opportunities to see another side of the valley and to expose visitors to many of the local products. Golf pro needs supportDALEEN FOUCHÉ

A local golfer whohas beaten all theodds tobecomeapro-fessional player, ur-gently needs the sup-port of the local com-munity to keep himplaying in the Sun-shine Tour.

Jacquin Hess (22)was chosen to play inthe2013SunshineTourafter he received hisprofessional card lastyear. However, he fac-es a real possibility oflosing his card if hedoes not perform in thetour.

He needs to win aminimum of R50 000 in theSunshine Tour this year in or-der to keep his place as profes-sional player. Hess says thereisarealpossibility thathewillnot be able to play in the tourbecause of a lack of money fortravelling and accommoda-tion at tournaments.

In order to raise money forthe continuation of his profes-sional career, Hess now offersgolf lessons at the RobertsonGolf Club to anyone whowants to improve their game.

George Joannou, owner ofRobertson Pick n Pay who hasknown Hess since he was achild, can vouch for his abilityas a golf coach. “I have taken

many lessons from Hess andhe is very friendly and pa-tient.” Joannou says Hess hasthe “perfect personality” forcoaching and has helped him,a golfer of 25 years, to improvehis game.

Joannou urges local golfersto take lessons to improvetheir game instead of “tortur-ing” themselves by playingbadly week after week. “I pitythe golfers who think they canteach themselves to play golf,”quips Joannou.

Hess says as a trainer, hecan help players improvetheir game and help anyone, including women and chil-dren,whoarenewtothegame.

Hesshasanimpecca-ble golfing record, de-spite the many chal-lenges he has had toovercome. He startedplaying golf at a youngage and gave up rugbyand cricket in order tofocus on golf at Lange-berg Secondary.

After school, Hesspursued his studiesand golfing and wastaken up in the SA stu-dent golf team. He wasnominated best playerof this team in 2011.

Hess says ideally hewould like to play in allthe golf contests in theSunshine and Big Easytours. Hess says he isgrateful to his spon-

sors, Club Activ and Robert-son Pick n Pay, which spon-sors Pick n Pay vouchers forhis meals.

The next Sunshine Tourevent will take place from 21August at the LangebaanCountry Estate.

Hesswillofferaholidaypro-gramme in golf lessons from24 June to 5 July. The pro-gramme will consist of one-hour sessions and cover all as-pects of the game includingmental skills, putting, chip-ping, iron skills, driving andfitness skills.

Partner with WWF and Ride for NatureThe World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is calling allcyclists to help them raise money by cycling.

South Africa’s cycling community consistsof an influential and passionate group of indi-viduals.

With this in mind, WWF has launched theRide for Nature campaign which invites cy-clists to join the Panda Peloton in certain raceswhile using the opportunity to raise funds to-wards the WWF conservation efforts.

Cycling is not only a healthy sport with low

environmental impact, but also a viable formof green transport, making it a natural ally ofWWF’s conservation efforts.

The idea is that the average cyclist enjoys na-ture and so Ride for Nature gives cyclists thechance to combine their twin passions by rais-ing funds and awareness for conservationthrough cycling.
