BOSTON COLLEGE vs. RITSaturday’s showcase at Blue Cross Arena, home of the American Hockey League’s Rochester Americans, marks only the second meeting all-time between Boston College and Rochester Institute of Technology. Like the first occasion, Saturday’s game will be staged at a neutral location, but in a setting familiar to Tigers’ fans. The Eagles blanked RIT in their first meeting during the 2007-08 season as part of the 2007 Dodge Holiday Classic held annually at Mariucci Arena, home of the Minnesota Golden Gophers. BC scored five goals in the third period, led by Nathan Gerbe’s one goal, two assist performance, to capture to tournament crown with the win. Then first-year netminder John Muse collected his second-career shutout with 24 stops while Carl Sneep (1-1-2), Ben Smith (1-1-2), Joe Whitney and Benn Ferriero (0-2-2) all registered multi-point performances in the victory.

EYE ON THE TIGERRIT will host its fifth-straight Brick City Homecoming weekend and sell out Blue Cross Arena in as many instances after splitting its opening weekend against St. Lawrence and Clarkson. The Tigers opened their brand new arena, the Gene Polisseni Center, with a 5-2 victory over St. Lawrence and lost to Clarkson, 3-1, the following night. Junior forward Josh Mitchell leads RIT’s offense with three points (0-3-3) in two games while senior forward Brad McGowan, junior Alexander Kuqali and Caleb Cameron are the only Tigers with goals in RIT’s first two outings. Each skater has two tallies apiece. Defensively, RIT has tested both netminders. In Friday’s triumph, senior Jordan Ruby stopped 21 shots while third-year goalie Ken MacLean stopped 31 shots in a 3-1 setback. Head coach Wayne Wilson has been at RIT, entering his 15th season and has accumulated a 283-166-49 mark as bench boss of the Tigers program..

DON’T I KNOW YOU?Boston College head coach Jerry York has won five national titles, but only four of them as an Eagle. York won his first national title as head coach at Bowling Green in 1984 and was aided by a familiar face in Friday’s fixture; RIT coach Wayne Wilson. Wilson was a staple on York’s ’84 championship club and came back to his alma mater to serve as an assistant coach for York in 1989. RIT associate head coach Brian Hills was also a skater under York’s direction, but graduated the season prior to the Falcons capturing the NCAA championship..

HISTORY (STILL) IN THE MAKINGThe Schiller Family Head Hockey Coach of Boston College, Jerry York, enters his 43rd season of coaching college hockey. Not only is York the winningest coach in the game’s history, having amassed 963 victories and a win loss total of 963-578-102 (.618), York is approaching another historic benchmark at his alma mater. Now in his 21st season as BC bench boss, York is just four victories away from earning his 500th victory as Eagles head coach. York is 496-243-68 (.658) in 20 seasons.

SHUSHING SHUTOUTSBoston College has not been shutout in 100 games. That is the longest active streak in the country. Denver is in second, having scored a goal in 69-consecutive games while Union is in third at 67.

BABY BIRD(S)Highly-touted rookie defenseman Noah Hanifin is not just the second-youngest player in all of college hockey, he is the second-youngest player EVER to don the maroon and gold. The Norwood, Mass., native will not turn 18 years old until Jan. 25, 2015. University of Michigan’s Zach Werenski (DOB: July 19, 1997) is college hockey’s youngest player. Boston College, as a whole, is the second-youngest club in college hockey behind Boston University. Last season, BC goaltender Thatcher Demko owned the distinction of being college hockey’s youngest player.

BOUNCING BACKBoston College has actually lost five of its last eight season opening contests dating back to the 2007-08 season, including last Friday’s 5-2 setback at UMass Lowell. The Eagles have won all four games following a season-opening lost, advanced to the NCAA Tournament on three of four occassions and won two national titles (2008 & 2010). BC lost its season openers in 2007-08 and 2009-10.

CHANGING OF THE GUARDFollowing yet another 25-win year, fourth in the last five seasons for Boston College, the Eagles leapfrogged Boston University in all-time win percentage in Hockey East play. In 30 seasons, the Eagles have compiled a 443-248-73 record for a league-best 62.8 win percentage in 30 seasons as a found member of Hockey East.

BC: THE NHL’s FIRST CHOICENot only did Boston College lead all of college hockey in 2013-14 by dispersing 26 Eagles across the National Hockey League, BC has placed 18 skaters on opening night rosters for the 2014-15 NHL season. That mark is tops in Hockey East. In regards to college hockey, seven first-round picks are among the nearly 200 NHL draft picks on college rosters, including at least one on 40 teams. Boston College is the only team in the country with two first-round draft picks, including junior captain Michael Matheson (Florida – 23rd) and Alex Tuch (Minnesota – 18th).

EAGLES TABBED SECOND IN HOCKEY EAST PRESEASON POLLBoston College has been chosen to finish second in the 2014-15 Hockey East Preseason Poll, voted on by the league coaches and announced at the conference’s annual media day at TD Garden on Sept. 29. The Eagles received three-of-12 first-place votes. This marks the first time in seven seasons and just the third in the last 16 years that Boston College has not been selected as the favorite or co-favorite to win the league title.

SEASON 26 AT KELLEY RINKBoston College celebrates its 26th season of playing hockey on Kelley Rink at Conte Forum. Starting in 1988, the BC’s overall record at Kelley Rink is 288-111-35 (.704). The Eagles played at McHugh Forum prior from 1958-86 when Boston College posted an overall mark of 282-95-10 (.748).

BIG TEN BRUSH-UPFourteen of the country’s most storied college hockey programs will compete this fall in the second Big Ten/Hockey East Challenge. Nine of 12 Hockey East institutions will join five of the six Big Ten schools in 20 designated games to be played between October 10 and November 29, with 10 games scheduled in Hockey East arenas and 10 in Big Ten venues. Big Ten/Hockey East Challenge Cup will be presented to the conference that records the most points from the 20 contests. Teams will earn two points for a win, one point for a tie and a bonus point will be awarded for a road win.

NEXT NUMBER UPThe Boston College offense will look to its young talent to replace the Eagles’ “Big Three” line ofJohnny Gaudreau, Kevin Hayes and Bill Arnold that constituted 43 percent of BC’s production last season. Gaudreau, the program’s first Hobey Baker winner since 2000 and the most prolific output in all of college hockey since the 2002-03 season, left after his junior season while Hayes, Arnold and former captain Patrick Brown all graduated. Those four combined for 92 goals, 136 assists and 228 points, just a shade under half the offensive product from the 2013-14 club.

HEAVY LIES THE CROWNBoston College lit the lamp the most times in college hockey in 2013-14. The Eagles tallied an NCAA-best 164 goals. BC was the only team in the country to average over four goals per game (4.10 gpg). Not only could BC boast the highest scoring clip, but the Eagles also recorded the top scoring margin in the country, beating opposing teams by a margin of 1.75 goals per game.

POWER PLAY PUNCHThe Eagles can credit a good portion of their success to their power play unit from 2013-14. The Eagles converted 34-of-140 chances with the man advantage, having finished with nation’s fifth-best mark of 24.3 percent.

MEN ON A MISSIONSophomore Ryan Fitzgerald returns as Boston College’s leading forward, notching 13 goals and 16 assists as the top scoring rookie in 2013-14. The North Reading, Mass., native was a two-time Hockey East Rookie of the Week and December’s Rookie of the Month. Classmate Austin Cangelosi is the second-leading returning scorer after posting 10 goals and 16 helpers in his rookie debut.

EagleDefenseDEFENSIVE OVERVIEWBoston College finished as the 12th-ranked defense in the country last season, surrendering 2.35 goals per game. That mark was also good for fifth in Hockey East. This season, the Eagles return all three goaltenders and all but one rearguard, as Isaac MacLeod has graduated. From the blue line combined, BC’s defense generated 90 points last year, including 18 goals and 72 assists. Perhaps the defense’s biggest contribution offensively was Ian McCoshen’s game-winning tally against UMass Lowell in the NCAA quarterfinals.

LAST LINE OF DEFENSEAfter getting drafted by Vancouver, 36th overall, in this summer’s NHL Entry Draft, Thatcher Demko returns as the mainstay in net for the Eagles. As a freshman, the San Diego, Calif., native turned in in college hockey’s sixth-best winning percentage (.729 – 16-5-3) with a 2.24 goals against average and a .919 save percentage. Not only did the 6-foot-4 goaltender go 9-1-1 in Hockey East last season, his 1.35 goals against average in conference action was also the lowest goals against average mark since Jimmy Howard’s (Maine) record of 1.15 in 2003-04. A member of the Hockey East All-Rookie Team, Demko captured the 2014 Eberly Award (goaltender with the best save percentage in the Beanpot) with a save rate of .966, marking the second-best save percentage in Beanpot Tournament history.

C O L D - B L O O D E D (PENALTY) KILLERSIn 2013-14, the Eagles’ penalty-killing unit eked out Quinnipiac by one-tenth of a percentage point for college hockey’s top penalty-killing corps. The Eagles denied opposing teams at a rate of 89.9 percent (152-for-169).

MARQUEE MATHESONCaptain Michael Matheson returned for his junior season and voted team captain. His captaincy was voted upon following several honors, including earning second-team All-America, All-Hockey East first team and a New England Division I All-Star. The Pointe-Claire, Quebec,

native is Boston College’s leading career scorer from the blue line, having tallied 25 and 21 points, respectively, in two seasons on The Heights.

SHERIFF SANTINISophomore Steve Santini captured a share of the program’s Bernie Burke Outstanding Freshman Award after becoming a mainstay on the blue line. The Mahopac, N.Y., native led all defensemen with a +26 plus/minus rating and was also the club’s leader with 68 blocked shots. Santini logged 11 points (3-8-11), including a timely goal in the national semifinal game against Union.

BCNumbersGameCoaches that are Boston College hockey alums – Jerry York, Greg Brown and Marty McInnis. All three have been inducted into Boston College Varsity Club Hall of Fame.

With NCAA Division I championships in 2008, 2010 and 2012, Boston College became the first team since 1961 to win three championships in six seasons; Murray Armstrong’s Denver team won three titles in four years (1958, 1960, 1961). The all-time best is five titles in six years, accomplished by Michigan (1951, 1952, 1953, 1955 and 1956).

NCAA Championships in the last 13years. During that time period, only Denver and Minnesota, each with two, have won multiple national titles.

Boston College has competed in five of the last nine national championship games – 2006 (Wisconsin, 1-2), 2007 (Michigan State, 1-3), 2008 (Notre Dame, 4-1), 2010 (Wisconsin, 5-0) and 2012 (Ferris State, 4-1).

Frozen Four appearances in the last 17 years; the highest total among all teams in college hockey. Only Boston College (11), North Dakota (eight), Michigan (six), Minnesota (five) and Michigan State (three) have advanced to more than two Frozen Fours during that time period.

Freshman forward Alex Tuch was selected by the Minnesota Wild (18th overall) in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, becoming the 15th Eagle in the last 27 years to have been selected in the first round of the NHL Draft. He joins Brian Leetch (ninth, 1986), Craig Janney (13th, 1986), Bill Guerin (fifth, 1989), Marty Reasoner (14th, 1996), Brooks Orpik (18th, 2000), Krys Kolanos (19th, 2000), Chuck Kobasew (14th, 2001), Brian Boyle (26th, 2003), Patrick Eaves(29th, 2003), Cory Schneider (26th, 2004), Nick Petrecki (28th, 2007), Chris Kreider (19th, 2009), Kevin Hayes (24th, 2010) and Michael Matheson(23rd, 2012) as Boston College first-round draftees.

Defensemen Ian McCoshen and Steve Santini alongside goaltender Thatcher Demko were members of the 2014 U.S. National Junior Team that competed at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships in Malmo, Sweden. Last year’s trio of freshmen were the 22nd, 23rd and 24th Eagle participants in World Junior play under head coach Jerry York, joining Jeff Farkas (1996, 1997, 1998), Marty Reasoner (1996, 1997), Blake Bellefuille (1997), Brian Gionta (1998, 1999), Mike Mottau (1998), Bobby Allen (1998), Brooks Orpik (2000), J.D. NCAA Tournament victories in the last 17 years. That win total is 18 victories more than Michigan, which has totaled 20 NCAA wins since 1998, the second-highest tournament win total in college hockey.

Since Jerry York led his first Boston College team to the 1997 Frozen Four, the Eagles have amassed the most victories in college hockey. Boston College has amassed 454 victories and is only one of three programs to have recorded more than 400 victories during that span. Michigan (453) and North Dakota (444) trail by a slim margin.

Upon completion of the 2013-14 season, Boston College reclaimed the best overall winning percentage in Hockey East history. Over the course of 30 seasons in league play, the Eagles’ winning percentage of .628 (443-247-73) reigns supreme in one of college hockey’s top conferences.

Jerry York’s overall record is 963-578-102 in 42 seasons as a head coach at Clarkson, Bowling Green and Boston College; he owns the most victories of any Division I coach in the history of college hockey. York is 34-11 in NCAA Tournament games as the head coach at Boston College; his 39 wins overall in the NCAA Tournament is also the highest total in Division I history.
