BOSTON COLLEGE vs. PROVIDENCEBoston College and Providence meet up in a huge Hockey East battle Friday night on The Heights in the Friars’ first trip back to Kelley Rink in over a year (Jan. 10, 2014). With just five weeks left in the regular season, every point matters as a PC victory would vault the Friars into a second-place tie with Boston College. Before puck drop, the Eagles have racked up 18 points in league play while PC is in fourth with 16. The Eagles will be looking for redemption after goaltender Jon Gillies stopped all 43 BC shots in a 1-0 shutout at Schneider Arena on Nov. 29. It also marked Providence’s first win at home over Boston College since Oct. 31, 2006. Dating back to March 14, 2008, the Eagles have owned Providence, winning 10 of the last 11 fixtures at Kelley Rink. In the last 22 meetings, Boston College has posted a 17-2-3 mark. Overall, the Eagles own a significant margin in the overall series, 109-46-13, and a 57-22-11 mark in Hockey East play. On Nov. 29, Providence coach Nate Leaman picked up his second overall win in 10 tries (2-7-1) against Boston College. Shutouts have seemed to be a common denominator in recent history as five of the last 11 contests have resulted in a blanking. Boston College has won four of those five shutouts.

FRIAR FOCUSProvidence skates into Chestnut Hill off a historic weekend, sweeping No. 5 UMass Lowell first the first time since Nov.23-24, 2005, and did so by outscoring the River Hawks by a combined score of 11-4. PC responded from a two-game skid beforehand with losses to Brown (5-3) and New Hampshire (2-1), respectively, on Jan. 10 and Jan. 13. Prior to those to setbacks, the Friars ascended the national rankings by winning 11-of-12 games, including six consecutive and winners of their holiday tournament in Burlington, Vt. Over the course of that hot streak, the Friars skated laps around their opponent, outscoring the opposition, 36-15. Junior Trevor Mingoia leads the PC attack and is ranked 48th national in scoring with 0.96 points per game while classmate Nick Saracino is tied for 79th with 0.88 points per game. Mingoia’s 13 goals (0.52 gpg) are tied for 28th in the NCAA while six of those tallies have come via the power play (tied for fifth in the country with 0.24 ppg per game). Third-year backstopper Jon Gillies have proved to be rock solid in net once again as he anchors the sixth toughest defense in the game. Providence is surrendering just above two goals per game (2.04 gpg) as Gillies is tied with eight others for the national lead in shutouts (4). The Calgary Flames draft pick is 11th in college hockey with a .932 save percentage and 15th with a 2.02 goals against average. Offensively, Providence averages 2.76 goals per game (27th) while the power play stands in 37th with a 15.4 percent (19-of-123) conversion rate. Providence has been granted the most power play chances in the nation this far (123).

PARSING THE PAIRWISEHeading into the weekend, BC jumped five spots after its victory against UConn into 13th in the Pairwise rankings with an RPI of .5535. The Eagles made a big move amongst Hockey East teams in the Pairwise and are now the third-highest ranked club behind Boston University (T-3rd) and Providence (ninth). Vermont (14th) and UMass Lowell (15th) lurk behind.

CENTURIAN CAPTAINJunior captain Michael Matheson will play in his 100th-career game on Friday against Providence. Matheson is fresh off a two-assist performance against UConn as the Pointe-Claire, Quebec, native has registered 13 goals and 49 assists on his time on The Heights.

HATS OFF FOR FITZYRyan Fitzgerald scored Boston College’s first hat trick of the season and within that trifecta was two power play goals and the game-winner against UConn on Jan. 24. He became the first Eagle to record a hat trick since Johnny Gaudreau turned the trick against Denver on March 29, 2014. Fitzgerald became the 38th skater in college hockey to record a hat trick this season. Alaska Anchorage’s Bret Cameron scored four goals in a game this year.

BEFORE THE BEANIn games immediately before the Beanpot Tournament, Boston College possesses a 42-17-3 overall record.

POWER PLAY PICKING UP STEAMSince the Eagles 8-1-1 run commencing on Dec. 6, the power play has picked up. Boston College’s overall numbers stand at 13.3 percent (14-for-105), but over the course of the last 10 games, the Eagles have up their percentage to 19.0 percent (8-for-42).

HOCKEY EAST IS HEATING UPLike every time this season, the race of the Hockey East championship is a bottleneck. Heading into the weekend, Boston College is tied with UMass Lowell for second place in the league with 18 points. The Eagles trail league-leading Boston University by four points. BC is one of three teams (Northeastern, UMass) to have played a league-high 15 games thus far, so several teams have a game in hand over the Eagles. As if stands, the Eagles would have a first-round bye and have home ice for the quarterfinal series.

TAG, YOU’RE ITWhen Boston College scores first, the Eagles have mounted a 10-2-1 record.

POWER PLAY IS PARAMOUNTScoring on the power play has proved to be key to the Eagles’ success in the early goings of the 2014-15 schedule. Boston College is an unblemished 10-0-0 when scoring at least one power play goal. When denied a power play goal, the Eagles are 5-8-2.

BEAK STREAKAfter a bit of an uneasy start (4-5-0), BC had rattled off the nation’s longest unbeaten streak that spanned from Dec. 5, 2014, to Jan. 16, 2015. Over the course of that time, the Eagles recorded a 6-0-2 mark in their unbeaten string of eight games. The Eagles’ unbeaten string started on Dec. 5 with a 2-2 draw at UNH and concluded after losing at Maine on Jan. 18.

#TROPHYSEASONBoston College captured its first trophy of the season after knocking off ECAC foes Brown and Dartmouth, respectively, on Jan. 2-3. The 2015 Ledyard Classic marked the Eagles third showing at the tournament. Boston College is 2-for-3 at the Ledyard Classic. The Eagles won in 2010 after beating Colgate and Mercyhurst and lost in their first showing in 1978.

MAN-UP MAYHEMOver the course of the games on Jan. 2-3, the Eagles netted three-consecutive power play goals. Adam Gilmour and Austin Cangelosi both scored on the power play to close out Brown while Gilmour opened the scoring against Dartmouth with a power play strike. With that, Gilmour became the first Eagle to score power play goals in consecutive outings.

SHOOTING GALLERYShots on goal has had a significant impact on the Eagles’ results this season. When BC limits its opponents to 20-29 shots, the Eagles are 10-4. When allowing 30 or more, Boston College is 4-4-2. When BC takes 30 or more shots, Boston College is 9-3-1.

Pairwise WERESTILLNOTINGA GRAND OL’ TIMEJerry York’s countdown to 1,000-career victories is officially on. York reached his 978th-career triumph against Connecticut on Jan. 24 and now has 22 wins left to reach 1,000.

GILMOUR ARENAAdam Gilmour’s two-career goals at Northeastern’s Matthews Arena have proved to be timely. The Hanover, Mass., native’s first goal at Matthews Arena took place in the form of the overtime winner on Nov. 2, 2013. In his trip to Huntington Ave. on Jan. 9, 2015, Gilmour scored the game-tying goal with 2:15 remaining in regulation to force a draw.

AMERICAN EAGLESThatcher Demko, Noah Hanifin, Ian McCoshen, Alex Tuch and Miles Wood (incoming in ‘15-’16) represent Boston College as five of 23 skaters for the 2015 U.S. National Junior Team roster as announced by USA Hockey on the night of Dec. 25. Team USA was dealt an early exit following a loss to Russia in the quarterfinals, but Tuch accounted for a goal and an assist while Hanifin logged a pair of assists over the course of the 2015 World Junior Tournament.

BC: THE NHL’s FIRST CHOICENot only did Boston College lead all of college hockey in 2013-14 by dispersing 26 Eagles across the National Hockey League, BC has placed 18 skaters on opening night rosters for the 2014-15 NHL season. That mark is tops in Hockey East. In regards to college hockey, seven first-round picks are among the nearly 200 NHL draft picks on college rosters, including at least one on 40 teams. Boston College is the only team in the country with two first-round draft picks, including junior captain Michael Matheson (Florida – 23rd) and Alex Tuch (Minnesota – 18th).

HOCKEY HALL CALLFarkas earned All-America accolades, was a Hobey Baker finalist and ranks sixth all-time in scoring (190). Hogan was instrumental in resurrecting this treasured sport at Boston College, following suspension of hockey as a varsity sport during the Great Depression. Reasoner earned NCAA East first-team honors, AHCA All-America honors, twice captured All-Hockey East first-team honors and helped bring BC to the NCAA National Championship game in 1998.

CHANGING OF THE GUARDFollowing yet another 25-win year, fourth in the last five seasons for Boston College, the Eagles leapfrogged Boston University in all-time win percentage in Hockey East play. In 30 seasons, the Eagles have compiled a 449-20-75 record for a league-best 62.9 win percentage in 30 seasons as a found member of Hockey East.

SEASON 26 AT KELLEY RINKBC celebrates its 26th season of playing hockey on Kelley Rink at Conte Forum. Starting in 1988, the BC’s overall record at Kelley Rink is 295-114-35 (.704). The Eagles played at McHugh Forum prior from 1958-86 when Boston College posted an overall mark of 282-95-10 (.748).

EAGLES TABBED SECOND IN HOCKEY EAST PRESEASON POLLBoston College has been chosen to finish second in the 2014-15 Hockey East Preseason Poll, voted on by the league coaches and announced at the conference’s annual media day at TD Garden on Sept. 29. The Eagles received three-of-12 first-place votes. This marks the first time in seven seasons and just the third in the last 16 years that Boston College has not been selected as the favorite or co-favorite to win the league title.

BIG TEN BRUSH-UPFourteen of the country’s most storied college hockey programs competed this fall in the second Big Ten/Hockey East Challenge. Nine of 12 Hockey East institutions will join five of the six Big Ten schools in 20 designated games to be played between October 10 and November 29, with 10 games scheduled in Hockey East arenas and 10 in Big Ten venues. Big Ten/Hockey East Challenge Cup will be presented to the conference that records the most points from the 20 contests. Teams will earn two points for a win, one point for a tie and a bonus point will be awarded for a road win. The Big Ten ended up nudging out Hockey Eats by just three points, 25-22.

#TEAMDREWBROWNHockey East is all about competition and brotherhood. Providence College’s Drew Brown will miss this season as he battles Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. Calgary Flames rookie and former Boston College Hobey Baker Award winner Johnny Gaudreau will be heading to Columbus, Ohio, on Jan. 23-25 for the NHL All-Star Weekend.

Gaudreau has 13 goals and 32 points in 42 games this year, which is second amongst all NHL rookies. The winger is one of six rookies who will participate NHL All-Star Skills Competition on Jan. 24.

As of Jan. 23, Gaudreau replaced an injured Sidney Crosby and played in the NHL All-Star Game on Jan. 25 in Columbus. Gaudreau registered a pair of assists.

Johnny also made headlines on Jan. 12, 2015, after applying for a trademark for the name “Johnny Hockey”, TSN first reported.

“We were concerned that people were going to abuse the Johnny Hockey name, coming out with Johnny Hockey shirts and stuff and we wanted to make sure that did not occur,” Lewis Gross, Gaudreau’s agent, told TSN. “We felt that Johnny was going to be a special player and if he takes off the way we felt he could, he has the potential to have endorsement opportunities that could be very valuable.”

WHERE THE OFFENSE STANDSThrough 25 games, Boston College is one of 17 clubs averaging three goals per game. The Eagles are scoring at a rate of 3.0 goals per game, tying them for 16th in all of college hockey and third in Hockey East.

FITZ-HERALDEDNot only did Ryan Fitzgerald score BC’s first hat trick of the season on Jan. 24 and first since Johnny Gaudreau’s on March 29, 2014, he became the second skater to log a pair of power play goals in a game (Adam Gilmour - Oct. 25). Fitzgerald scored all three goals in BC”s 3-2 win over UConn and posted his fourth game-winning tally of the season and is tied with Chris Calnan for fourth in thta category. The sophomore now leads the Eagles with 12 goals after becoming the 38th skater in college hockey to turn in a hat trick.

CAL ON MEChris Calnan has accounted for eight points in his last 11 outings (6-2-8), including his fourth game-winning goal of the season that came against Merrimack on Jan. 21. Calnan is tied for fourth in the country with four game-winning goals. The Norwell, Mass., native has also registered three two-goal performances in 11 games. His most recent two-goal performance took place on Jan. 10 against NU where he scored the game-winner in short-handed fashion. In every two-goal performance this season, Calnan has secured the game-winning goal. Calnan native is tied for 40th in goals per game (0.46).

GOLDEN TUCHAlex Tuch broke out for several career bests on Jan. 16 at Agganis Arena against BU. Tuch tallied his first-career three-point performance, his first-career two-goal performance and first-career power play goal. Tuch now has four multi-point performances in his rookie season. Tuch leads all rookies with 17 points (7-10-17) and is currently slotted tied as the 16th-most prolific scorer in the country amongst rookies.

HAPPY GILMOURAdam Gilmour’s career best six-game point streak game to a close on Jan. 18 at Maine, but strung together four goals and four assists over the course of Dec. 13 to Jan. 16. Gilmour leads BC with five power goals on the season and is currently tied for 11th in the nation in that category and tied for second in Hockey East. The Hanover, Mass., native scored a power play goal in consecutive games from Jan. 2-3, marking the first time an Eagle has scored power play markers in back-to-back games. Gilmour followed that up with another power play tally on Jan. 10 to give him three in four games. Gilmour’s four-game goal scoring streak (Jan. 2-10), stands as the longest career goal-scoring spell of any current Eagle.

CAGED UP CANGEAustin Cangelosi scored his first-career power play goal on Jan. 2 against Brown. Cangelosi’s first PPG fell on his 57th-career game. Cangeolsi has now scored three goals from Dec. 5 - Jan. 2 after going scoreless in his first 14 games this season.

GAME-WINNING GUSTOSophomore Chris Calnan and Ryan Fitzgerald are tied with two others having scored the most game-winning goals in Hockey East. Both Calnan and Fitzgerald have registered four game-winning goals.

SIT ‘EM DOWNSenior assistant captain Michael Sit scored his first goal the season at Maine on Jan. 18. He owns six goals for his career.

ZACH ATTACHSRookie Zach Sanford has done his duty dishing the puck, recording 12 assists thus far. In his 10th game, Sanford found the back of the net on Nov. 14. Sanford has since scored three goals and nine assists and is currently second amongst all rookies with 16 points (4-12-16) and is tied for 27th amidst all first-year skaters.

GAUDREAU 2.0Sophomore Matthew Gaudreau has dressed in 19 games this season, scoring a goal in two of them already. The Carneys Point, N.J., native also scored in back-to-back games on Nov. 11 and Nov. 14, marking his first-career point streak. Gaudreau has played in 21 career games and netted his first-career goal against Army on Nov. 10. He also registered his first-career assist on Nov. 22 against Maine.

GIMMIE MOUR GILMOURFollowing his two power play goal performance and an assist with a career-high six shots against UMass on Oct. 25, Adam Gilmour picked up Boston College’s s e co n d - co n s e c u t i v e Hockey East honor after claiming Player of the Week honors on Monday, Oct. 27. One of Gilmour’s two 5-on-3 goals proved to the game winner against the Minutemen. The opening night against Colorado College, Gilmour doled out a pair of assists for a five-point weekend. Gilmour now has a pair of two-goal games

under his belt his first occurring against Boston University on Jan. 17, 2014. Gilmour leads the team in scoring (6-12-18) and leads all Eagles in career power play goal with eight.

CASH CAMCam Spiro set up the play for Teddy Doherty’s game-winning goal against RIT on Oct. 18. It marked the Hingham, Mass., native’s first point since March 15, 2013. The following outing against Colorado College on oct. 24, Spiro scored his first-career two-goal game in his 28th outing as an Eagle. It also markeds the senior’s second-career two-point game. The last time Spiro notched two points was a one goal, one assist performance against Huntsville on Dec. 29, 2012.

SILKY SMOOTHJunior Brendan Silk posted his first-career multi-point game with a pair of assists in the victory against RIT on Oct. 18. That contest marked the junior’s 75th-career game.

EagleDefenseDEFENSIVE POSITIONINGBC’s defense is currently ranked 20th, surrendering 2.32 goals per game. That mark ranks fifth in Hockey East.

BLUE-LINE BOPPERSThe Eagles’ defensive corps is not having a problem lighting the lamp itself. Boston College has scored 75 goals on the season with 13 coming from the twigs of the blue liners. In BC’s first victory of the season against RIT, four of Boston College’s six goals game from defensemen (Matheson, Doherty, Santini, McCoshen). Heading into the weekend of Jan. 16, Teddy Doherty (5-12-17) and Michael Matheson (2-14-16) are tied for second and fifth in team scoring, respectively.

HANIFIN HAVIN’ FUNNewcomer Noah Hanifin tallied his fourth multi-point performance of the season (1-1-2) on Jan. 16, including his first-career power play goal. Hanifin scored his first-career goal as an Eagle against Colorado College and followed that with his first-career mutli-point game with both assists on Adam Gilmour’s 5-on-3 tallies against UMass. At UMass on Nov. 21, Hanifin registered his first-career three-point performance. Hanifin is in the midst of his longest point streak at BC of four games.

THE SHERIFF RETURNSSteve Santini missed most of the first half of the season following scheduled wrist surgery Oct. 28, 2014. Santini returned to the lineup following his 17-game hiatus and logged his first assist of the season in his return on Jan. 10.

YOU’RE TED WRONGJunior Teddy Doherty capped a career-best four-game point streak (Dec. 6 - Jan. 3) and has most recently helped the Eagles clinch the Ledyard Classic trophy with the game-winning goal against Dartmouth on Jan. 3. For his three-point weekend at Dartmouth, Doherty was awarded the Tournament MVP. Doherty is not only second on the team in scoring, he is tied for 14th amongst all defensemen and tied for third in Hockey East.

MATHESON HITS 50Captain Michael Matheson turned in his third-career playmaker (three assists) in the win against UMass on Oct. 25 with his last one taking place against Providence on Jan. 10, 2014. Matheson notched his 60th-career point with his second goal of the season in his 95th-career game. Matheson leads BC with 14 assists thus far and will play in his 100th-career game against Providence on Jan. 30.

McCAUTIONSophomore defensemen Ian McCoshen scored his second-career game-winning goal and first of the season against Michigan on Dec. 13. McCoshen has scored a goal in each game against Michigan.

POWER PLAY PLAUDITSSophomore Ian McCoshen not only score the Eagles’ first power play goal of the season late in the third frame agaisnt RIT, it stood as his first-career power play marker on The Heights. McCoshen has also doled out three assists thus far.


EagleDefenseMcCAUTION MAKING MOVESSophomore Ian McCoshen notched his third-career multi-point game and first-career outing with a pair of assists on Jan. 16, 2015. The Faribault, Minn., native assisted on both Boston College 5-on-3 penalties.

LAST LINE OF DEFENSESophomore goaltender Thatcher Demko is 13-7-2 on the season and currently ranks 21st in the NCAA in goals against average with a mark of 2.08. Demko’s save percentage of .928 is good for 17th in college hockey. Demko’s winning percentage of .636 has him ranked 20th in the country. Following his freshman campaign, Demko was drafted by Vancouver, 36th overall, in last summer’s NHL Entry Draft. As a freshman, Demko turned in in college hockey’s sixth-best winning percentage (.729 – 16-5-3) with a 2.24 goals against average and a .919 save percentage.

CAREER DAY(S) FOR DEMKOIn three of Thatcher Demko’s four starts between Nov. 29 and Dec. 13, the San Diego, Calif., native set a new career best or matched it. On Nov. 29, despite suffering a 1-0 loss at Providence, Demko posted a new career best with 37 saves. The following outing on Dec. 5 at New Hampshire, Demko matched that same number to post respective 37-save performances. Before the first half concluded, Demko stoned 41 shots against Michigan to help the Eagles preserve a 5-1 win against the Wolverines.

DEMKO DOLING IT OUTThathcher Demko recorded his fifth-career assist and first since the season opener at UMass Lowell on Oct. 10. Demko’s helper came on Austin Cangelosi’s goal on Dec. 6.

RAD BRADSenior Brad Barone is fresh of back-to-back victories, marking his first two wins as netminder for the Eagles. The Medfield, Mass., native stopped 22 and 23 shots, respectively, against Brown and Dartmouth to preserve

his first-career triumphs. The Nov. 11 game against Harvard marked Barone’s first start in six career games played. For his career, the Medfield, Mass., native owns a 2.43 goals against average and a .907 save percentage with a 2-1-0 record.

COLD-BLOODED (PENALTY) KILLERSBoston College possess the 11th-ranked penalty killing unit in the country and third best in all of Hockey East. The Eagles have denied 94-of-108 chances with a stoppage rate of 87.50percent.

BCNumbersGameCoaches that are Boston College hockey alums – Jerry York, Greg Brown and Marty McInnis. All three have been inducted into Boston College Varsity Club Hall of Fame.

With NCAA Division I championships in 2008, 2010 and 2012, Boston College became the first team since 1961 to win three championships in six seasons; Murray Armstrong’s Denver team won three titles in four years (1958, 1960, 1961). The all-time best is five titles in six years, accomplished by Michigan (1951, 1952, 1953, 1955 and 1956).

NCAA Championships in the last 13years. During that time period, only Denver and Minnesota, each with two, have won multiple national titles.

Boston College has competed in five of the last nine national championship games – 2006 (Wisconsin, 1-2), 2007 (Michigan State, 1-3), 2008 (Notre Dame, 4-1), 2010 (Wisconsin, 5-0) and 2012 (Ferris State, 4-1).

Frozen Four appearances in the last 17 years; the highest total among all teams in college hockey. Only Boston College (11), North Dakota (eight), Michigan (six), Minnesota (five) and Michigan State (three) have advanced to more than two Frozen Fours during that time period.

Freshman forward Alex Tuch was selected by the Minnesota Wild (18th overall) in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, becoming the 15th Eagle in the last 27 years to have been selected in the first round of the NHL Draft. He joins Brian Leetch (ninth, 1986), Craig Janney (13th, 1986), Bill Guerin (fifth, 1989), Marty Reasoner (14th, 1996), Brooks Orpik (18th, 2000), Krys Kolanos (19th, 2000), Chuck Kobasew (14th, 2001), Brian Boyle (26th, 2003), Patrick Eaves(29th, 2003), Cory Schneider (26th, 2004), Nick Petrecki (28th, 2007), Chris Kreider (19th, 2009), Kevin Hayes (24th, 2010) and Michael Matheson(23rd, 2012) as Boston College first-round draftees.

Freshmen Noah Hanifin and Alex Tuch and incoming freshmen joined Thatcher Demko and Ian McCoshen as members of the 2015 U.S. National Junior Team that competed at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships in Canada. This group became the 25th, 26th and 27th Eagle participants in World Junior play under head coach Jerry York, joining Jeff Farkas (1996, 1997, 1998), Marty Reasoner (1996, 1997), Blake Bellefuille (1997), Brian Gionta (1998, 1999), Mike Mottau (1998), Bobby Allen (1998), Brooks Orpik (2000), J.D. Former Eagles saw NHL action in 2013-14; the most of any program in college hockey. Wisconsin had the second most alums with 21 last season.

NCAA Tournament victories in the last 17 years. That win total is 18 victories more than Michigan, which has totaled 20 NCAA wins since 1998, the second-highest tournament win total in college hockey.

Since Jerry York led his first Boston College team to the 1997 Frozen Four, the Eagles have amassed the most victories in college hockey. Boston College has amassed 469 victories and is only one of three programs to have recorded more than 400 victories during that span. Michigan (468) and North Dakota (462) trail by a slim margin.

Upon completion of the 2013-14 season, Boston College reclaimed the best overall winning percentage in Hockey East history. Over the course of 30 seasons in league play, the Eagles’ winning percentage of .630 (451-250-75) reigns supreme in one of college hockey’s top conferences.

Jerry York’s overall record is 978-585-104 in 42 seasons as a head coach at Clarkson, Bowling Green and Boston College; he owns the most victories of any Division I coach in the history of college hockey. York is 34-11 in NCAA Tournament games as the head coach at Boston College; his 39 wins overall in the NCAA Tournament is also the highest total in Division I history.
