#BATTLEOFCOMMAVEThe focus of college hockey’s attention will be directed on Agganis Arena Friday night as Boston College and Boston University lock horns for the 267th time in history. This meeting has rather larger implications than normal as the Eagles and Terriers are currently two of the nation’s hottest teams heading into the Jan. 16th affair. Since around Thanksgiving, neither club has lost a game. The Eagles are 5-0-2 since losing at Providence on Nov. 29 while the Terriers are 3-0-3 since getting shutout at Dartmouth on Nov. 30. Since BC lost at home to Boston University, the Eagles have gone 8-3-2 and currently sit four points behind first-place BU while the Terriers have a league game in hand. Following last season, Boston College usurped the Terriers as the winningest team of all time in the Hockey East Association’s 30-year history. Last season, the Eagles swept the three-game series over BU, including the first round of the Beanpot Tournament. The last time Boston College won every meeting against BU in the regular season occurred in the 2010-11 season when BC went 4-0 over BU. In recent history, Boston College has dominated its foe from Comm. Ave, winning 12 of the last 17 meetings dating back to the 2010 Beanpot title game on Feb. 8. Head coach Jerry York is 3-1 against his new adversary from Allston, David Quinn. Prior to Quinn’s arrival, the Eagles faced off against famed coach Jack Parker 155 times dating back to 1973, including 82 meetings against York. In all, York is 40-39-7 against Boston University as head coach of the Eagles. Friday also marks the 122nd encounter in Hockey East play. Whoever wins Friday’s game will have the edge in league play as BC and BU are split, 55-55-11, at this point. In all, BU leads the overall series, 130-119-17.

RHETT REPORTAs mentioned before, Boston University is one of the hottest teams heading into Friday as only three other teams (Bowling Green (9), Bemidji State (7) and Boston College (7)) have longer unbeaten streaks. The Terriers are in the midst of one of their biggest turnarounds, already surpassing last season’s win totals both overall (10) and in Hockey East play (5), thanks to an 8-1-1 start. BU has not started 8-1-1 since the 2001-02 ledger. BU is fresh off a two-game stint in Madison where it tied and defeated Wisconsin on Jan. 9-10, respectively. The Terriers sport highly-touted rookie, Jack Eichel, who currently leads all of college hockey with 1.72 points per game. Eichel is one of two skaters in the NCAA with 30 points (Mike Vecchione – Union) and just returned from Team USA and the World Junior Championship as team captain. Senior Evan Rodrigues is also in the middle of a strong campaign, ranked 21st in scoring, averaging 1.11 points per game. Danny O’Regan is also tied for second amidst all goal scorers, netting 0.74 goals per trip. With such prolific scoring, the Terriers offense ranks sixth in college hockey and second in the league with 3.47 goals per game. On the flip side, BU’s defense is even stingier, ranked fourth in the nation and is just one of seven teams surrendering less than two goals per game (1.89). Junior Matt O’Connor has played a large role, posting the sixth-best save percentage (.936) in college hockey along with the 10th-best goals against average (1.83). BU’s penalty kill is one notch above the Eagles and the two teams are ranked sixth (88.8 percent) and seventh (88.3 percent), in that order.

BEAK STREAKAfter a bit of an uneasy start (4-5-0), Boston College has rattled off an 8-2-2 record. Boston College is currently tied with Bemidji State for the second-longest unbeaten streak in the country, having gone unbeaten in the last seven games with five victories and a pair of draws. Bowling Green has not lost in nine games, posting a 6-0-3 mark. The Eagles’ unbeaten string started on Dec. 5 with a 2-2 draw at New Hampshire.

PARSING THE PAIRWISEBoston College is currently 20th i the Pairwise rankings with an RPI of .5397. The Eagles are currently sixth amongst Hockey East teams as BU (eighth), UMass Lowell (ninth), Vermont (10th), Providence (16th) and Merrimack (18th) all rank ahead of the Eagles to this point.

TAG, YOU’RE ITWhen Boston College scores first, the Eagles have mounted an 8-2-1 record.

COMEBACK KIDSIn two recent contests in which Boston College was trailing heading into the third period, the Eagles have either rallied back to tie or win. At New Hampshire on Dec. 5, Austin Cangelosi netted the game-tying goal with 4:45 left in regulation in Durham while Chris Calnan and Teddy Doherty teamed up in the third period at Dartmouth on Jan. 2 to overcome a one-goal deficit and take down the Big Green, 3-2, after trailing heading into the final period.

POWER PLAY IS PARAMOUNTScoring on the power play has proved to be key to the Eagles’ success in the early goings of the 2014-15 schedule. Boston College is an unblemished 8-0-0 when scoring at least one power play goal. When denied a power play goal, the Eagles are 4-7-2.

#TROPHYSEASONBoston College captured its first trophy of the season after knocking off ECAC foes Brown and Dartmouth, respectively, on Jan. 2-3. The 2015 Ledyard Classic marked the Eagles third showing at the tournament. Boston College is 2-for-3 at the Ledyard Classic. The Eagles won in 2010 after beating Colgate and Mercyhurst and lost in their first showing in 1978.

MAN-UP MAYHEMOver the course of the games on Jan. 2-3, the Eagles netted three-consecutive power play goals. Adam Gilmour and Austin Cangelosi both scored on the power play to close out Brown while Gilmour opened the scoring against Dartmouth with a power play strike. With that, Gilmour became the first Eagle to score power play goals in consecutive outings this season.

DETERMINED IN DECEMBERBoston College finished the month of December with an unbeaten 2-0-1 mark. Over the course of their last nine games in December, the Eagles are 6-1-2 with their lone loss coming against Minnesota in the Mariucci Classic on Dec. 30, 2012.

MOVIN’ ON UPFollowing the three-point weekend against Northeastern, Boston College is now in a tie for fourth place with Providence, owning 12 points in Hockey East play. From here on out, the only remaining non-conference tilts for the Eagles are the two Beanpot contests.

SHOOTING GALLERYShots on goal has had a significant impact on the Eagles’ results this season. When BC limits its opponents to 20-29 shots, the Eagles are 8-4. When allowing 30 or more, Boston College is 3-3-2. When BC takes 30 or more shots, Boston College is 7-2-1.

FIRST-HALF REPORTBoston College closed out the first half of the season with a 9-7-1 win-loss total, marking the first time the Eagles have not reached 10 or more victories since the 2008-09 season when BC capped the opening half with a 9-5-2 record. Four Eagles are tied atop the team lead with 12 points as sophomore Chris Calnan leads the team with seven goals scored.

Pairwise WERESTILLNOTINGA GRAND OL’ TIMEJerry York’s countdown to 1,000-career victories is officially on. York reached his 975th-career triumph against Northeastern on Jan. 10 and now has only 25 wins left to reach 1,000.

GILMOUR ARENAAdam Gilmour’s two-career goals at Northeastern’s Matthews Arena have proved to be timely. The Hanover, Mass., native’s first goal at Matthews Arena took place in the form of the overtime winner on Nov. 2, 2013. In his trip to Huntington Ave. on Jan. 9, 2015, Gilmour scored the game-tying goal with 2:15 remaining in regulation to force a draw.

AMERICAN EAGLESThatcher Demko, Noah Hanifin, Ian McCoshen, Alex Tuch and Miles Wood (incoming in ‘15-’16) represent Boston College as five of 23 skaters for the 2015 U.S. National Junior Team roster as announced by USA Hockey on the night of Dec. 25. Team USA was dealt an early exit following a loss to Russia in the quarterfinals, but Tuch accounted for a goal and an assist while Hanifin logged a pair of assists over the course of the 2015 World Junior Tournament.

BC: THE NHL’s FIRST CHOICENot only did Boston College lead all of college hockey in 2013-14 by dispersing 26 Eagles across the National Hockey League, BC has placed 18 skaters on opening night rosters for the 2014-15 NHL season. That mark is tops in Hockey East. In regards to college hockey, seven first-round picks are among the nearly 200 NHL draft picks on college rosters, including at least one on 40 teams. Boston College is the only team in the country with two first-round draft picks, including junior captain Michael Matheson (Florida – 23rd) and Alex Tuch (Minnesota – 18th).

HOCKEY HALL CALLFarkas earned All-America accolades, was a Hobey Baker finalist and ranks sixth all-time in scoring (190). Hogan was instrumental in resurrecting this treasured sport at Boston College, following suspension of hockey as a varsity sport during the Great Depression. Reasoner earned NCAA East first-team honors, AHCA All-America honors, twice captured All-Hockey East first-team honors and helped bring BC to the NCAA National Championship game in 1998.

CHANGING OF THE GUARDFollowing yet another 25-win year, fourth in the last five seasons for Boston College, the Eagles leapfrogged Boston University in all-time win percentage in Hockey East play. In 30 seasons, the Eagles have compiled a 444-248-73 record for a league-best 62.8 win percentage in 30 seasons as a found member of Hockey East.

SEASON 26 AT KELLEY RINKBC celebrates its 26th season of playing hockey on Kelley Rink at Conte Forum. Starting in 1988, the BC’s overall record at Kelley Rink is 294-114-35 (.704). The Eagles played at McHugh Forum prior from 1958-86 when Boston College posted an overall mark of 282-95-10 (.748).

EAGLES TABBED SECOND IN HOCKEY EAST PRESEASON POLLBoston College has been chosen to finish second in the 2014-15 Hockey East Preseason Poll, voted on by the league coaches and announced at the conference’s annual media day at TD Garden on Sept. 29. The Eagles received three-of-12 first-place votes. This marks the first time in seven seasons and just the third in the last 16 years that Boston College has not been selected as the favorite or co-favorite to win the league title.

BIG TEN BRUSH-UPFourteen of the country’s most storied college hockey programs competed this fall in the second Big Ten/Hockey East Challenge. Nine of 12 Hockey East institutions will join five of the six Big Ten schools in 20 designated games to be played between October 10 and November 29, with 10 games scheduled in Hockey East arenas and 10 in Big Ten venues. Big Ten/Hockey East Challenge Cup will be presented to the conference that records the most points from the 20 contests. Teams will earn two points for a win, one point for a tie and a bonus point will be awarded for a road win. The Big Ten ended up nudging out Hockey Eats by just three points, 25-22.

#TEAMDREWBROWNHockey East is all about competition and brotherhood. Providence College’s Drew Brown will miss this season as he battles Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. Calgary Flames rookie and former Boston College Hobey Baker Award winner Johnny Gaudreau will be heading to Columbus, Ohio, on Jan. 23-25 for the NHL All-Star Weekend.

Gaudreau has 13 goals and 32 points in 42 games this year, which is second amongst all NHL rookies. The winger is one of six rookies who will participate NHL All-Star Skills Competition on Jan. 24.

Johnny also made headlines on Jan. 12, 2015, after applying for a trademark for the name “Johnny Hockey”, TSN first reported.

“We were concerned that people were going to abuse the Johnny Hockey name, coming out with Johnny Hockey shirts and stuff and we wanted to make sure that did not occur,” Lewis Gross, Gaudreau’s agent, told TSN. “We felt that Johnny was going to be a special player and if he takes off the way we felt he could, he has the potential to have endorsement opportunities that could be very valuable.”

According to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office records, the application was filed in September 2014. It claims the name’s first use in August of last year.

WHERE THE OFFENSE STANDSThrough 21 games, Boston College is one of 19 clubs averaging over three goals per game. The Eagles are scoring at a rate of 3.05 goals per game, ranking them 17th in all of college hockey and fourth in Hockey East.

HAPPY GILMOURAdam Gilmour leads Boston College with five power goals on the season and is currently tied for fifth in the nation in that category and tied for first in Hockey East. Only four other skaters in college hockey have scored more power play goals than Gilmour. The Hanover, Mass., native scored a power play goal in consecutive games from Jan. 2-3, marking the first time an Eagle has scored power play markers in consecutive games. Gilmour followed that up with another power play tally on Jan. 10 to give him three in four games. Gilmour is on a four-game goal scoring streak (Jan. 2-10), standing as the longest career goal-scoring spell of any current Eagle.

CAL ON MEChris Calnan has accounted for seven points in his last six outings (5-2-7), including his third two-goal performance in 11 games. His most recent two-goal performance took place on Jan. 10 against NU where he scored the game-winning goal in short-handed fashion. In every two-goal performance this season, Calnan has secured the game-winning goal. The Norwell, Mass., native is tied for ninth in the country in game-winning goals (3) and tied for 26th in goals per game (0.50). Calnan also posted his first-career three-game point streak (11/21-28).

FITZ BLITZRyan Fitzgerald posted his first three-point performance of the season and third of his career with a goal and two assists against Brown on Jan. 2. Fitzgerald’s last three-point outing took place at the Eagles’ last holiday tournament against Penn State (Pittsburgh) on Dec. 28, 2013. Fitzgerald also scored BC’s game-winning goal and now leads the Eagles

with three on the season. Fitzgerald is tied for ninth in the country in game-winning goals.

CAGED UP CANGEAustin Cangelosi scored his first-career power play goal on Jan. 2 against Brown. Cangelosi’s first extra-man marker fell on his 57th-career game. The Estero, Fla., native has now scored three goals from Dec. 5 - Jan. 2 after going scoreless in his first 14 games this season. Cangelosi scored BC’s first game-tying goal of the season on Dec. 5 and followed that with another on Dec. 6.

QUINN CANQuinn Smith notched his second-career two-goal performance with a pair against Michigan on Dec. 13. Smith is two tallies shy of matching his sophomore season with eight goals. Smith delivered his first game-winning goal and fifth of his career at Michigan State on Nov. 14. Smith has already surpassed his goal total (2) from his junior season. Smith is BC’s third-leading career goal scorer with 17.

ZACH ATTACHSRookie Zach Sanford has done his duty dishing the puck, recording 11 assists thus far. In his 10th game, Sanford found the back of the net on Nov. 14. Sanford has since scored three goals and nine assists and is currently in the midst of a four-game point streak. Sanford currently leads all rookies with 14 points (3-11-14) and is ranked 20th amidst all first-year skaters.

FITZ FOR TWORyan Fitzgerald exploded for a two-goal performance against Boston University on Nov. 7, marking his second outburst in four games. The North Reading, Mass., native had never scored a pair of goals in a game until the Denver contest on Nov. 1.

ALL TUCHERED OUTFirst-year forward Alex Tuch is one point behind Zach Sanford for the lead in rookie points, but has logged the most goals (5) out of the three freshmen. The Baldwinsville, N.Y., native is tied for 21st in the country amongst all rookies.

GAUDREAU 2.0Sophomore Matthew Gaudreau has dressed in 15 games this season, scoring a goal in two of them already. The Carneys Point, N.J., native also scored in back-to-back games on Nov. 11 and Nov. 14, marking his first-career point streak. Gaudreau has played in 21 career games and netted his first-career goal against Army on Nov. 10. He also registered his first-career assist on Nov. 22 against Maine.

GIMMIE MOUR GILMOURFollowing his two power play goal performance and an assist with a career-high six shots against UMass on Oct. 25, Adam Gilmour picked up Boston College’s s e co n d - co n s e c u t i v e Hockey East honor after claiming Player of the Week honors on Monday, Oct. 27. One of Gilmour’s two 5-on-3 goals proved to the game winner

against the Minutemen. The opening night against Colorado College, Gilmour doled out a pair of assists for a five-point weekend. Gilmour now has a pair of two-goal games under his belt his first occurring against Boston University on Jan. 17, 2014. Gilmour is second on the team in scoring (4-10-14) and leads all Eagles in career power play goal with eight.

CASH CAMCam Spiro set up the play for Teddy Doherty’s game-winning goal against RIT on Oct. 18. It marked the Hingham, Mass., native’s first point since March 15, 2013. The following outing against Colorado College on oct. 24, Spiro scored his first-career two-goal game in his 28th outing as an Eagle. It also markeds the senior’s second-career two-point game. The last time Spiro notched two points was a one goal, one assist performance against Huntsville on Dec. 29, 2012.

EagleDefenseDEFENSIVE POSITIONINGBC’s defense is ranked 23rd, surrendering 2.33 goals per game. That mark currently ranks fifth in Hockey East.

BLUE-LINE BOPPERSThe Eagles’ defensive corps is not having a problem lighting the lamp itself. Boston College has scored 64 goals on the season with 12 coming from the twigs of the blue liners. In BC’s first victory of the season against RIT, four of Boston College’s six goals game from defensemen (Matheson, Doherty, Santini, McCoshen). Heading into the weekend of Jan. 16, Teddy Doherty (5-11-16) and Michael Matheson (2-12-134 rank second and fifth in team scoring.

THE SHERIFF RETURNSSteve Santini missed most of the first half of the season following scheduled wrist surgery Oct. 28, 2014. Santini returned to the lineup following his 17-game hiatus and logged his first assist of the season in his return on Jan. 10.

RED-HOT TEDJunior Teddy Doherty just capped a career-best four-game point streak (Dec. 6 - Jan. 3) and has most recently helped the Eagles clinch the Ledyard Classic trophy with the game-winning goal against Dartmouth on Jan. 3. For his three-point weekend at Dartmouth, Doherty was awarded the Tournament MVP. Doherty is not only second on the team in scoring, he is tied for 14th amongst all defensemen and tied for third in Hockey East.

HANDS UP FOR HANIFINNewcomer Noah Hanifin tallied his third multi-point performance of the season (0-2-2) on Jan. 10. Hanifin scored his first-career goal as an Eagle against Colorado College and followed that with his first-career mutli-point game with both assists on Adam Gilmour’s 5-on-3 tallies against UMass. At UMass on Nov. 21, Hanifin registered his first-career three-point performance.

MATHESON HITS 50Captain Michael Matheson turned in his third-career playmaker (three assists) in the win against UMass on Oct. 25 with his last one taking place against Providence on Jan. 10, 2014. Matheson notched his 60th-career point with his second goal of the season in his 95th-career game. Matheson leads BC with 12 assists thus far.

McCAUTIONSophomore defensemen Ian McCoshen scored his second-career game-winning goal and first of the season against Michigan on Dec. 13. McCoshen has scored a goal in each game against Michigan.

POWER PLAY PLAUDITSSophomore Ian McCoshen not only score the Eagles’ first power play goal of the season late in the third frame agaisnt RIT, it stood as his first-career power play marker on The Heights. McCoshen has also doled out three assists thus far.


EagleDefenseLAST LINE OF DEFENSESophomore goaltender Thatcher Demko is 10-6-1 on the season and currently ranks 22nd in the NCAA in goals against average with a mark of 2.04. Demko’s save percentage of .930 is good for 17th in college hockey. Demko’s winning percentage of .611 is tied for 26th in the country. Following his freshman campaign, Demko was drafted by Vancouver, 36th overall, in last summer’s NHL Entry Draft. As a freshman, Demko turned in in college hockey’s sixth-best winning percentage (.729 – 16-5-3) with a 2.24 goals against average and a .919 save percentage.

CAREER DAY(S) FOR DEMKOIn three of Thatcher Demko’s four starts between Nov. 29 and Dec. 13, the San Diego, Calif., native set a new career best or matched it. On Nov. 29, despite suffering a 1-0 loss at Providence, Demko posted a new career best with 37 saves. The following outing on Dec. 5 at New Hampshire, Demko matched that same number to post respective 37-save performances. Before the first half concluded, Demko stoned 41 shots against Michigan to help the Eagles preserve a 5-1 win against the Wolverines.

DEMKO DOLING IT OUTThathcher Demko recorded his fifth-career assist and first since the season opener at UMass Lowell on Oct. 10. Demko’s helper came on Austin Cangelosi’s goal on Dec. 6.

RAD BRADSenior Brad Barone is fresh of back-to-back victories, marking his first two wins as netminder for the Eagles. The Medfield, Mass., native stopped 22 and 23 shots, respectively, against Brown and Dartmouth to preserve his first-career triumphs. The Nov. 11 game against Harvard marked Barone’s first start in six career games played. For his career, the Medfield, Mass., native owns a 2.43 goals against average and a .907 save percentage with a 2-1-0 record.

COLD-BLOODED (PENALTY) KILLERSBoston College has the seventh-ranked penalty killing unit in the country and fourth best in all of Hockey East. The Eagles have denied 83-of-94 chances with a stoppage rate of 88.23 percent. Last season, the Eagles’ penalty-killing unit eked out Quinnipiac by one-tenth of a percentage point for college hockey’s top penalty-killing corps.

BCNumbersGameCoaches that are Boston College hockey alums – Jerry York, Greg Brown and Marty McInnis. All three have been inducted into Boston College Varsity Club Hall of Fame.

With NCAA Division I championships in 2008, 2010 and 2012, Boston College became the first team since 1961 to win three championships in six seasons; Murray Armstrong’s Denver team won three titles in four years (1958, 1960, 1961). The all-time best is five titles in six years, accomplished by Michigan (1951, 1952, 1953, 1955 and 1956).

NCAA Championships in the last 13years. During that time period, only Denver and Minnesota, each with two, have won multiple national titles.

Boston College has competed in five of the last nine national championship games – 2006 (Wisconsin, 1-2), 2007 (Michigan State, 1-3), 2008 (Notre Dame, 4-1), 2010 (Wisconsin, 5-0) and 2012 (Ferris State, 4-1).

Frozen Four appearances in the last 17 years; the highest total among all teams in college hockey. Only Boston College (11), North Dakota (eight), Michigan (six), Minnesota (five) and Michigan State (three) have advanced to more than two Frozen Fours during that time period.

Freshman forward Alex Tuch was selected by the Minnesota Wild (18th overall) in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, becoming the 15th Eagle in the last 27 years to have been selected in the first round of the NHL Draft. He joins Brian Leetch (ninth, 1986), Craig Janney (13th, 1986), Bill Guerin (fifth, 1989), Marty Reasoner (14th, 1996), Brooks Orpik (18th, 2000), Krys Kolanos (19th, 2000), Chuck Kobasew (14th, 2001), Brian Boyle (26th, 2003), Patrick Eaves(29th, 2003), Cory Schneider (26th, 2004), Nick Petrecki (28th, 2007), Chris Kreider (19th, 2009), Kevin Hayes (24th, 2010) and Michael Matheson(23rd, 2012) as Boston College first-round draftees.

Defensemen Ian McCoshen and Steve Santini alongside goaltender Thatcher Demko were members of the 2014 U.S. National Junior Team that competed at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships in Malmo, Sweden. Last year’s trio of freshmen were the 22nd, 23rd and 24th Eagle participants in World Junior play under head coach Jerry York, joining Jeff Farkas (1996, 1997, 1998), Marty Reasoner (1996, 1997), Blake Bellefuille (1997), Brian Gionta (1998, 1999), Mike Mottau (1998), Bobby Allen (1998), Brooks Orpik (2000), J.D. Former Eagles saw NHL action in 2013-14; the most of any program in college hockey. Wisconsin had the second most alums with 21 last season.

NCAA Tournament victories in the last 17 years. That win total is 18 victories more than Michigan, which has totaled 20 NCAA wins since 1998, the second-highest tournament win total in college hockey.

Since Jerry York led his first Boston College team to the 1997 Frozen Four, the Eagles have amassed the most victories in college hockey. Boston College has amassed 466 victories and is only one of three programs to have recorded more than 400 victories during that span. Michigan (464) and North Dakota (458) trail by a slim margin.

Upon completion of the 2013-14 season, Boston College reclaimed the best overall winning percentage in Hockey East history. Over the course of 30 seasons in league play, the Eagles’ winning percentage of .629 (448-249-75) reigns supreme in one of college hockey’s top conferences.

Jerry York’s overall record is 975-584-104 in 42 seasons as a head coach at Clarkson, Bowling Green and Boston College; he owns the most victories of any Division I coach in the history of college hockey. York is 34-11 in NCAA Tournament games as the head coach at Boston College; his 39 wins overall in the NCAA Tournament is also the highest total in Division I history.
