BOSTON COLLEGE vs. PROVIDENCEBoston College returns to Schneider Arena where the Eagles last met Providence. BC shutout the Friars, 2-0, marking the fourth shutout in the last 10 meetings against PC. Boston College has owned the majority of the Providence series in recent history, constructing a 17-1-3 mark over the course of the last 21 meetings. The Eagles have no lost against Providence at Schneider Arena since Oct. 31, 2006, when PC scored with 1:46 left in regulation to break a 3-3 tie. In all, Boston College holds a 109-46-13 mark against Providence with a 57-21-11 mark in Hockey East play. PC coach Nate Leamn has only won one game against the Eagles with a 1-7-1 mark in nine encounters while Friars’ goaltender Jon Gillies is 1-3-1 against BC with a 2.59 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage.

FOCUSING ON THE FRIARSProvidence is 5-2-0 in the month of November, with Trevor Mingoia leading the team in scoring over those seven games (7 GP, 4-4-8), followed by Shane Luke (7 GP, 3-3-6). The Friars are 4-for-35 on the power play this month (11.4%) and 29-for-32 on the penalty kill (90.6%). The team’s goals-against average is 0.86 for the month, while Jon Gillies has a 4-2-0 mark to go with a 1.01 goals-against average and a .966 save percentage. The Friars are 20-10-1 in the month of November under Nate Leaman (last four seasons). PC shutout Army on Nov. 26 led by a 22-save performance from Jon Gillies. The Friars posted a shutout for the second consecutive game with a 1-0 win over New Hampshire on Nov. 22. Trevor Mingoia tallied the first goal of the game at 9:23 of the first period when he netted the eventual winner. Mingoia leads the Friars with five goals and six assists and is tied for second in the nation with three game-winning goals. Gillies’ .932 save percentage and 2.05 goals against average are tied for 14th and 21st in the country, respectively. Gillies anchors te 13th-ranked offense, giving up only 2.00 goals per game but is not getting much help up front. Providence’s offense is ranked 49th in college hockey, scoring at a clip of 1.92 goals per game. The power play has struggled, finding the back of the net only five times in 60 chances for a conversion rate of 8.3 percent. That mark is tied for 55th in the NCAA.

BATTLING THE BIG TENBefore Friday’s game, Boston College battled the Big Ten Conference six times as an official league. The addition of Penn State in 2013-14 gave the Big Ten a six-team league and an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Tournament. Last season, the Eagles posted a 3-2-1 mark against Big Ten foes, including an 0-1-1 mark against Minnesota, 2-0 total against Penn State, 1-0 mark against Wisconsin and an 0-1 mark against Michigan. Amongst the Big Ten as a whole in BC history, the Eagles are 44-55-5 (.447) against the conference.

FIVE (hundred) ALIVEJerry York won his 500th game behind the Eagles’ bench in only 811 games after a 2-1 victory at Denver on Oct. 31, 2014.

SAME AS SNOOKSBoston College head coach Jerry York matched legendary skipper, John ‘Snooks’ Kelley (1932-42 & 1946-72), as the winningest coach in program history after the victory at Michigan State on Nov. 14. In all, Kelley coached for 36 years and had York under his wing as a player. Kelley’s overall mark at BC was 501-244-15 (.670). York, in his 21st season as head coach at BC, is 501-247-68 (.656). A win against Massachusetts will give him the all-time wins record as an Eagle head coach.

FIVE (hundred) ALIVEJerry York won his 500th game behind the Eagles’ bench in only 811 games after a 2-1 victory at Denver on Oct. 31, 2014. York continues to maintain the label as college hockey’s winninges coach all-time, possessing a 968-582-102 mark in his 43rd season as a college hockey head coach.

- Jerry York is now the winningest coach in Boston College history, surpassing Snooks Kelley with 502 career wins on The Heights #InYorkWeTrust

- Alex Tuch’s has scored a goal in his last two games, both coming without an assist #WeAreBC

- Matthew Gaudreau secured his first-career assist in Saturday’s win against Maine on Nov. 22 #WeAreBC

REACHING NEW “HEIGHTS”On. Nov. 21, 2014, at Massachusetts, the Eagles secured a 5-3 victory to make Jerry York the winningest coach in Boston College hockey history. Heading into thes contest, York was even with his former coach John “Snooks” Kelley at 501 total victories. Following the 5-3 decision, York holds the claim as both the winningest coach at his alma mater (503-244-15) and in college hockey history (970-582-102).

POWER PLAY IS PARAMOUNTScoring on the power play has proved to be key to the Eagles’ success in the early goings of the 2014-15 schedule. Boston College has scored at least one goal or more in five of its seven victories thus far. Conversely, the Eagles are 2-5 when denied a power play goal. In all, Boston College has converted six of its 54 chances at a rate of 11.1 percent which ranks 43rd in the country right now.

TOUGH THROUGH TWOBoston College has proved how important it is to get out ahead early. The Eagles are 6-1-0 with a lead after two periods of regulation, yet have not come back to win a game while facing a deficit through 40 minutes of regulation. The Eagles are 0-3-0 when down after two periods of play.

REMEMBER THE LAST TIME BC LOST FOUR GAMES? The last time Boston College lost four consecutive games, you would have to look back to the 2003-04 season when the Eagles lost to UNH (3-2 - Feb. 28), Maine (3-0 and 3-4, March 5-6) and BU (3-2, March 11). That season, the Eagles went on to compete in the 2004 Frozen Four, in Boston, eventually falling to Maine in the national semifinal, 2-1, on April 8, 2004. BC snapped its recent four-game slide in a 3-2 triumph at Michigan State on Nov. 14.

SHUTOUT STREAK STOPPED UPBC was shutout at Connecticut on Nov. 5 in the first-ever meeting between the Eagles and the Huskies. The Eagles owned the longest streak in the country of scoring at least one goal in 106 games with their last shutout transpiring on Jan. 13, 2012, at UMass. In 813 games behind Boston College’s bench, Jerry York has been held scoreless only 20 times total.

OFFENSIVE ONSLAUGHTThe Eagles scored six goals in back-to-back games on Oct. 18 and Oct. 24 against RIT and Colorado College, in that order. The last time Boston College combined for 12 goals in two games was last season when the Eagles defeated Boston University, 6-4, and Maine, 7-2, back-to-back on Jan. 17-18, 2014. Under Jerry York, Boston College has combined for 12 goals or more over the span of two games all but three times in a single season. The only seasons BC has never scored 12 or more goals in back-to-back games was 1994-95 (first season), 2003-04 and 2012-13.

BABY BIRD(S)Rookie defenseman Noah Hanifin is not just the second-youngest player in all of college hockey, he is the second-youngest player EVER to don the maroon and gold. The Norwood, Mass., native will not turn 18 years old until Jan. 25, 2015. Michigan’s Zach Werenski (DOB: July 19, 1997) is college hockey’s youngest player. Boston College, as a whole, is the second-youngest club in college hockey behind Boston University. Last season, BC goaltender Thatcher Demko owned the distinction of being college hockey’s youngest player.

EagleHallCALLOne-third of the BC Varsity Club Hall of Fame - Class of 2014 - was made up from the men’s ice hockey contingent. These three Eagles were enshrined into the BC Varsity Club Hall of Fame on Friday, Oct. 17, and were recognized at halftime of the Eagles’ football game against Clemson.

WERESTILLNOTINGBC: THE NHL’s FIRST CHOICENot only did Boston College lead all of college hockey in 2013-14 by dispersing 26 Eagles across the National Hockey League, BC has placed 18 skaters on opening night rosters for the 2014-15 NHL season. That mark is tops in Hockey East. In regards to college hockey, seven first-round picks are among the nearly 200 NHL draft picks on college rosters, including at least one on 40 teams. Boston College is the only team in the country with two first-round draft picks, including junior captain Michael Matheson (Florida – 23rd) and Alex Tuch (Minnesota – 18th).

CHANGING OF THE GUARDFollowing yet another 25-win year, fourth in the last five seasons for Boston College, the Eagles leapfrogged Boston University in all-time win percentage in Hockey East play. In 30 seasons, the Eagles have compiled a 444-248-73 record for a league-best 62.8 win percentage in 30 seasons as a found member of Hockey East.

SEASON 26 AT KELLEY RINKBC celebrates its 26th season of playing hockey on Kelley Rink at Conte Forum. Starting in 1988, the BC’s overall record at Kelley Rink is 288-111-35 (.704). The Eagles played at McHugh Forum prior from 1958-86 when Boston College posted an overall mark of 282-95-10 (.748).

#TEAMDREWBROWNHockey East is all about competition and brotherhood. Providence College’s Drew Brown will miss this season as he battles Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. For those that would like to help donate to Brown’s cause, the fundraising campaign is called “Dropping Mitts Against Cancer”. More information is located here: gofundme.com/93da50

Jeff Farkas played four years on the Eagles’ hockey team. In 2000, Farkas earned All-America accolades, was a Hobey Baker finalist, and received the Norman F. Dailey Memorial Award given by the Pike’s Peak Hockey Club to the team’s MVP. During his incredible career, the Eagles finished with an exemplary 99-52-14 record with two Hockey East Championships and three Frozen Four appearances.

The sport of ice hockey at Boston College - as we know it today - would not exist without the efforts of William M. Hogan. A native of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Hogan was instrumental in resurrecting this treasured sport at BC, following suspension of hockey as a varsity sport during the Great Depression. When the team gathered at Boston Arena for its first varsity game, the players unanimously voted Hogan as team captain.

Marty Reasoner played three years on the Eagles’ hockey team. Leading the team in scoring in each of his seasons, Reasoner earned NCAA East first-team honors, AHCA All-America honors, and twice captured All-Hockey East first-team honors. He helped bring BC to the NCAA National Championship game in 1998. Reasoner represented the U.S. in the 1996 and 1997 World Junior Championships, and the 2002, 2003 and 2006 World Championships.

With NCAA Division I championships in 2008, 2010 and 2012, Boston College became the first team since 1961 to win three championships in six seasons; Murray Armstrong’s Denver team won three titles in four years (1958, 1960, 1961). The all-time best is five titles in six years, accomplished by Michigan (1951, 1952, 1953, 1955 and 1956).

NCAA Championships in the last 13years. During that time period, only Denver and Minnesota, each with two, have won multiple national titles.

Boston College has competed in five of the last nine national championship games – 2006 (Wisconsin, 1-2), 2007 (Michigan State, 1-3), 2008 (Notre Dame, 4-1), 2010 (Wisconsin, 5-0) and 2012 (Ferris State, 4-1).

Frozen Four appearances in the last 17 years; the highest total among all teams in college hockey. Only Boston College (11), North Dakota (eight), Michigan (six), Minnesota (five) and Michigan State (three) have advanced to more than two Frozen Fours during that time period.

Freshman forward Alex Tuch was selected by the Minnesota Wild (18th overall) in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, becoming the 15th Eagle in the last 27 years to have been selected in the first round of the NHL Draft. He joins Brian Leetch (ninth, 1986), Craig Janney (13th, 1986), Bill Guerin (fifth, 1989), Marty Reasoner (14th, 1996), Brooks Orpik (18th, 2000), Krys Kolanos (19th, 2000), Chuck Kobasew (14th, 2001), Brian Boyle (26th, 2003), Patrick Eaves(29th, 2003), Cory Schneider (26th, 2004), Nick Petrecki (28th, 2007), Chris Kreider (19th, 2009), Kevin Hayes (24th, 2010) and Michael Matheson(23rd, 2012) as Boston College first-round draftees.

Defensemen Ian McCoshen and Steve Santini alongside goaltender Thatcher Demko were members of the 2014 U.S. National Junior Team that competed at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships in Malmo, Sweden. Last year’s trio of freshmen were the 22nd, 23rd and 24th Eagle participants in World Junior play under head coach Jerry York, joining Jeff Farkas (1996, 1997, 1998), Marty Reasoner (1996, 1997), Blake Bellefuille (1997), Brian Gionta (1998, 1999), Mike Mottau (1998), Bobby Allen (1998), Brooks Orpik (2000), J.D. Forrest (2001), Ben Eaves (2002), Chuck Kobasew (Canada; 2002), Patrick Eaves (2003, 2004), Ryan Shannon (2003), Dan Bertram (Canada; 2006, 2007), Cory Schneider (2005, 2006), Nathan Gerbe (2006, 2007), Jimmy Hayes (2009), Chris Kreider (2010, 2011), Brian Dumoulin (2011), Patrick Wey (2011), Bill Arnold (2012) and Johnny Gaudreau (2013).

Former Eagles saw NHL action in 2013-14; the most of any program in college hockey. Wisconsin had the second most alums with 21 last season.

NCAA Tournament victories in the last 17 years. That win total is 18 victories more than Michigan, which has totaled 20 NCAA wins since 1998, the second-highest tournament win total in college hockey.

Since Jerry York led his first Boston College team to the 1997 Frozen Four, the Eagles have amassed the most victories in college hockey. Boston College has amassed 461 victories and is only one of three programs to have recorded more than 400 victories during that span. Michigan (457) and North Dakota (455) trail by a slim margin.

Upon completion of the 2013-14 season, Boston College reclaimed the best overall winning percentage in Hockey East history. Over the course of 30 seasons in league play, the Eagles’ winning percentage of .628 (446-249-73) reigns supreme in one of college hockey’s top conferences.

Jerry York’s overall record is 970-583-102 in 42 seasons as a head coach at Clarkson, Bowling Green and Boston College; he owns the most victories of any Division I coach in the history of college hockey. York is 34-11 in NCAA Tournament games as the head coach at Boston College; his 39 wins overall in the NCAA Tournament is also the highest total in Division I history.

Admiring the standards off the ice as much as on, Phil cited his respect and enjoyment in watching Jerry York run the program. In recognition of Jerry’s accomplishments and to ensure that the future of BC remains strong for years to come, the Schillers decided to permanently etch their legacy with BC Hockey.
