BOSTON COLLEGE vs. CONNECTICUTBoston College, ranked the No. 3 team in the country on Nov. 5, was heavily favored heading into the first-ever meeting with Connecticut at the XL Center in Hartford. Evan Richardson, who had transferred from Boston College the season prior, scored in the first period in that initial tilt and the goal stood as the difference as the Huskies prevailed in the first-ever meeting between BC and UConn. That game on Nov. 5 marked Connecticut’s first home conference game as a member of Hockey East. Richardson’s strike was a power play goal (UConn went 1-for-6) while Boston College was denied on all five power play opportunities. With that 1-0 decision, UConn ended Boston College’s longest streak in college hockey of not being shut. The Eagles had scored a goal in 106 games before Nov. 5, 2014.

COUNTDOWN TO CONNECTICUTDespite an overall record of 7-11-5, UConn is just one game below .500 (4-5-2) in Hockey East play and heading into the weekend, was tied with Northeastern for seventh place. Last weekend, the Huskies took part in a home-and-home series with Notre Dame and scrounged a point in league play with a 3-3 draw on Jan. 16 before getting upended, 6-1, in Bridgeport, Conn. Prior to the series against the Irish, UConn was winners in three of four contests, taking down UMass (4-3), Army and blanking UMass Lowell (2-0) with a loss against Colorado College (1-4) sandwiched in between. Since blanking Boston College on Nov. 5, the Huskies have pieced together a 5-7-3 record. Junior Shawn Pauly leads UConn with 15 points (3-12-15) and is currently tied for 93rd in the country with 0.52 assists per game while rookie Spencer Naas is 53rd in goal scoring with 10, logging 0.43 tallies per game. Evan Richardson guides the Huskies’ power play and has scored three extra-man goals this season. Goaltender Rob Nichols owns the nation’s 20th-best save percentage (.927) and 37th-best goal against average of 2.37. Nichols has the UConn defense ranked seventh in Hockey East and tied for 34th in all of college hockey. Despite some offensive spark from Naas and Richardson, UConn’s offense of 2.04 goals per game ranks last in the conference and 51st overall. UConn’s power play and penalty kill rank closely as the Huskies are seventh in Hockey East at 13.4 percent (11-of-82) and 80.2 percent (69-of-86), respectively.

PARSING THE PAIRWISEHeading into the weekend, Boston College is 18th in the Pairwise rankings with an RPI of .5478. The Eagles are currently sixth amongst Hockey East teams as BU (eighth), UMass Lowell (ninth), Vermont (T-12th), Providence (14th) and Merrimack (T-16th) all rank ahead of the Eagles to this point.

PRIME TIME EAGLESThe Jan. 21 broadcast against Merrimack marked the third time in four games the Eagles were shown live on the New England Sports Network. BC took down Northeastern’s on Jan. 10, 4-2, before defeating Boston University on the road on Jan. 16 and the Warriors at home. The Eagles will next appear live on NESN when they take on Northeastern in the first round of the 63rd Beanpot Tournament.

RETURN OF THE ‘MACKWith its victory on Jan. 21, Boston College extended its home unbeaten streak against Merrimack to 29 games. The Eagles have not lost to Merrimack at Kelley Rink since Oct. 31, 1997. BC is 26-0-3 against the Warriors during that span.

ROOKIE ROMPAll three goal scorers in the Jan. 16 victory over Boston University at Agganis were all freshmen. Rookies Alex Tuch (2), Noah Hanifin and Zach Sonford teamed up to help push BC to victory.

- Boston College has not lost a game when it has scored a power play goal and is 5-8-2 when held scoreless on the power play

- Sophomore Chris Calnan has scored four game-winning goals this season and is tied for fourth in the country in that category

- Jerry York is now just 23 wins shy of reaching the 1,000-career victory benchmark for his career

- Boston College held the longest unbeaten streak in the country heading into the Maine contests, BC was unbeaten in eight games from Nov. 29

HOCKEY EAST IS HEATING UPLike every time this season, the race of the Hockey East championship is a bottleneck. Heading into the weekend, Boston College is in third place with 16 points, two points behind league leaders Boston University and UMass Lowell. BC has played the most league contests in Hockey East thus far, so several teams have a game in hand over the Eagles. As if stands, the Eagles would have a first-round bye and have home ice for the quarterfinal series.

TAG, YOU’RE ITWhen Boston College scores first, the Eagles have mounted a 10-2-1 record.

POWER PLAY IS PARAMOUNTScoring on the power play has proved to be key to the Eagles’ success in the early goings of the 2014-15 schedule. Boston College is an unblemished 9-0-0 when scoring at least one power play goal. When denied a power play goal, the Eagles are 5-8-2.

BEAK STREAKAfter a bit of an uneasy start (4-5-0), BC had rattled off the nation’s longest unbeaten streak that spanned from Dec. 5, 2014, to Jan. 16, 2015. Over the course of that time, the Eagles recorded a 6-0-2 mark in their unbeaten string of eight games. The Eagles’ unbeaten string started on Dec. 5 with a 2-2 draw at UNH and concluded after losing at Maine on Jan. 18.

CRACKING JACKBoston College held the nation’s leading scorer, Jack Eichel , to a -2 plus/minus rating in the BU win on Jan. 16. In 20 games as a Terrier, Eichel had finished with a minus only two other times, including against Maine on Nov. 21 (-1) and Dartmouth on Nov. 30 (-2).

#TROPHYSEASONBoston College captured its first trophy of the season after knocking off ECAC foes Brown and Dartmouth, respectively, on Jan. 2-3. The 2015 Ledyard Classic marked the Eagles third showing at the tournament. Boston College is 2-for-3 at the Ledyard Classic. The Eagles won in 2010 after beating Colgate and Mercyhurst and lost in their first showing in 1978.

MAN-UP MAYHEMOver the course of the games on Jan. 2-3, the Eagles netted three-consecutive power play goals. Adam Gilmour and Austin Cangelosi both scored on the power play to close out Brown while Gilmour opened the scoring against Dartmouth with a power play strike. With that, Gilmour became the first Eagle to score power play goals in consecutive outings.

COMEBACK KIDSIn two recent contests in which Boston College was trailing heading into the third period, the Eagles have either rallied back to tie or win. At New Hampshire on Dec. 5, Austin Cangelosi netted the game-tying goal with 4:45 left in regulation in Durham while Chris Calnan and Teddy Doherty teamed up in the third period at Dartmouth on Jan. 2 to overcome a one-goal deficit and take down the Big Green, 3-2, after trailing heading into the final period.

SHOOTING GALLERYShots on goal has had a significant impact on the Eagles’ results this season. When BC limits its opponents to 20-29 shots, the Eagles are 9-4. When allowing 30 or more, Boston College is 4-4-2. When BC takes 30 or more shots, Boston College is 8-3-1.

Gaudreau has 13 goals and 32 points in 42 games this year, which is second amongst all NHL rookies. The winger is one of six rookies who will participate NHL All-Star Skills Competition on Jan. 24.

As of Jan. 23, it is being reported that Gaudreau will take the spot of an injured Sidney Crosby and will played in the All-Star Game on Jan. 25.

Johnny also made headlines on Jan. 12, 2015, after applying for a trademark for the name “Johnny Hockey”, TSN first reported.

“We were concerned that people were going to abuse the Johnny Hockey name, coming out with Johnny Hockey shirts and stuff and we wanted to make sure that did not occur,” Lewis Gross, Gaudreau’s agent, told TSN. “We felt that Johnny was going to be a special player and if he takes off the way we felt he could, he has the potential to have endorsement opportunities that could be very valuable.”

BCNumbersGameCoaches that are Boston College hockey alums – Jerry York, Greg Brown and Marty McInnis. All three have been inducted into Boston College Varsity Club Hall of Fame.

With NCAA Division I championships in 2008, 2010 and 2012, Boston College became the first team since 1961 to win three championships in six seasons; Murray Armstrong’s Denver team won three titles in four years (1958, 1960, 1961). The all-time best is five titles in six years, accomplished by Michigan (1951, 1952, 1953, 1955 and 1956).

NCAA Championships in the last 13years. During that time period, only Denver and Minnesota, each with two, have won multiple national titles.

Boston College has competed in five of the last nine national championship games – 2006 (Wisconsin, 1-2), 2007 (Michigan State, 1-3), 2008 (Notre Dame, 4-1), 2010 (Wisconsin, 5-0) and 2012 (Ferris State, 4-1).

Frozen Four appearances in the last 17 years; the highest total among all teams in college hockey. Only Boston College (11), North Dakota (eight), Michigan (six), Minnesota (five) and Michigan State (three) have advanced to more than two Frozen Fours during that time period.

Freshman forward Alex Tuch was selected by the Minnesota Wild (18th overall) in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, becoming the 15th Eagle in the last 27 years to have been selected in the first round of the NHL Draft. He joins Brian Leetch (ninth, 1986), Craig Janney (13th, 1986), Bill Guerin (fifth, 1989), Marty Reasoner (14th, 1996), Brooks Orpik (18th, 2000), Krys Kolanos (19th, 2000), Chuck Kobasew (14th, 2001), Brian Boyle (26th, 2003), Patrick Eaves(29th, 2003), Cory Schneider (26th, 2004), Nick Petrecki (28th, 2007), Chris Kreider (19th, 2009), Kevin Hayes (24th, 2010) and Michael Matheson(23rd, 2012) as Boston College first-round draftees.

Defensemen Ian McCoshen and Steve Santini alongside goaltender Thatcher Demko were members of the 2014 U.S. National Junior Team that competed at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships in Malmo, Sweden. Last year’s trio of freshmen were the 22nd, 23rd and 24th Eagle participants in World Junior play under head coach Jerry York, joining Jeff Farkas (1996, 1997, 1998), Marty Reasoner (1996, 1997), Blake Bellefuille (1997), Brian Gionta (1998, 1999), Mike Mottau (1998), Bobby Allen (1998), Brooks Orpik (2000), J.D. Forrest (2001), Ben Eaves (2002), Chuck Kobasew (Canada; 2002), Patrick Eaves (2003, 2004), Ryan Shannon (2003), Dan Bertram (Canada; 2006, 2007), Cory Schneider (2005, 2006), Nathan Gerbe (2006, 2007), Jimmy Hayes (2009), Chris Kreider (2010, 2011), Brian Dumoulin (2011), Patrick Wey (2011), Bill Arnold (2012) and Johnny Gaudreau (2013).

Former Eagles saw NHL action in 2013-14; the most of any program in college hockey. Wisconsin had the second most alums with 21 last season.

NCAA Tournament victories in the last 17 years. That win total is 18 victories more than Michigan, which has totaled 20 NCAA wins since 1998, the second-highest tournament win total in college hockey.

Since Jerry York led his first Boston College team to the 1997 Frozen Four, the Eagles have amassed the most victories in college hockey. Boston College has amassed 468 victories and is only one of three programs to have recorded more than 400 victories during that span. Michigan (464) and North Dakota (458) trail by a slim margin.

Upon completion of the 2013-14 season, Boston College reclaimed the best overall winning percentage in Hockey East history. Over the course of 30 seasons in league play, the Eagles’ winning percentage of .629 (450-250-75) reigns supreme in one of college hockey’s top conferences.

Jerry York’s overall record is 977-585-104 in 42 seasons as a head coach at Clarkson, Bowling Green and Boston College; he owns the most victories of any Division I coach in the history of college hockey. York is 34-11 in NCAA Tournament games as the head coach at Boston College; his 39 wins overall in the NCAA Tournament is also the highest total in Division I history.

The $5M commitment permanently attached the Schiller Family to a position and a leader they feel is so important to BC. Admiring the standards off the ice as much as on, Phil cited his respect and enjoyment in watching Jerry York run the program. In recognition of Jerry’s accomplishments and to ensure that the future of BC remains strong for years to come, the Schillers decided to permanently etch their legacy with BC Hockey.
