4 NEWSLETTER MARCH 2011

Kenneth Nyfelt describes the Baltic 62 Semi-

Custom as "a fast cruising yacht, designed for

high performance cruising but also for ease

and simplicity of handling".

The Baltic 62SC project has evolved from the

Baltic 62 Custom currently nearing completion

at the yard, and also the more performance-

oriented Baltic 65, Stig, launched last year.

The Semi-Custom model will be available with

two different deck layouts - single or twin-

cockpit - and two different interior layouts -

owner aft or owner forward.

The single cockpit option is likely to appeal to

owners and families who like to get closely

involved in the sailing and handling of the

boat. The twin cockpit creates an area away

from the sheets and winches, enabling guests

or less experienced sailors to enjoy their

cruising at a distance from the working areas of

the deck.

The keel is available as a standard fixed option

or as a telescopic, lifting keel. The carbon rig

package includes aft-swept spreaders

providing strong support to the mast,

minimising the rig's reliance on the running

backstays.

As with the deck layout options, Nyfelt says the

choice of interior layout is down to the way the

owner intends to use the boat. "Most owners

these days, as this makes for a quieter cabin

away from the noise of the cockpit and main

operating areas further aft," he says.

"However, for the owner looking for a

smoother ride when the boat is at sea, we still

offer the 'owner aft' option."

The styling of the interior is very open to the

owner's tastes and preferences. "At Baltic

Yachts we are used to accommodating a

range of styles, from traditional Scandinavian

teak interiors, to the white, minimalist, modern

styling that has become more popular in

recent years. We think the custom options

available on the Baltic 62SC will give this boat

a very broad appeal."

The Baltic 147 project, Visione, marked a great

step forward in high-performance large sailing

yachts. Almost ten years after her launch, Visione

continues to inspire those in quest of high-

performance blue-water sailing. Indeed, Visione

has inspired us to launch a new model that

reflects many of the Baltic 147's traits, the Baltic

125 Custom.

The B125 will employ the latest techniques and

materials in high-tech, lightweight construction,

and will be available in a number of

configurations. For example it will be possible to

specify lifting or canting keel options, and

different internal layouts with owner-cabin-

forward or owner-cabin-aft variations.

It will even be possible to modify the hull lines

according to the boat's intended purpose,

whether the aim is for ultimate performance and

high-speed planing potential, or for a higher-

volume model designed for greater storage

capacity and more equipment for comfortable

long-range cruising.

While there are many options on offer, what all

variations of the B125 Custom will share is a

drive for high performance combined with

practical solutions aimed at simple, trouble-free

sailing. For example we have designed the

cockpit with the sole in one level, which makes it

easy and safe to move around the cockpit both

during cruising and racing.

Baltic Yachts has started construction of a custom

58-footer designed specifically for cold-water

cruising. With our in-house design team working

alongside judel/vrolijk, the project specifies a

very lightweight long-distance cruiser which will

be used primarily for sailing in northerly waters.

Project manager Mathias Flink says a lot of

thought has gone into the heating and ventilation

systems that will be required to perform in the

extreme cold of the Arctic Circle. "Rather than the

diesel heaters used on most boats, we are

working on a water-based heating system. When

the water temperature is so low, you have to be

careful about positioning equipment in the hull so

as to avoid the risk of freezing and

malfunctioning. And it's important that the drain

tubes in the hull are shorter and more vertical

than normal, so the water doesn't have the

chance to freeze and block the tubes."

With the owner's intention to sail the boat

singlehanded, safety and ease of handling are

high priorities. Low maintenance and good

access to the engine and other equipment are

essential, and the telescopic lifting keel must work

faultlessly. The hull will be built with infused

carbon fibre and the interior will be made of

prepreg carbon composite with a Nomex core.
