called to put God first in our daily lives. Yet,
in today's fast paced world we're pulled in
many directions and making decisions that
impact our time and finances. Blessed Sacra-

faith by offering Financial Peace University to
help everyone learn God's ways to better man-
age the blessings He has given us. FPU
teaches families, couples, and singles how to
put together a spending plan that really
works, step by step on getting out of debt, how
to invest for the future, the security of an
emergency fund, the blessing of charitable giv-
ing, and much more! This up-lifting class
meets for 9 weeks, one night a week, with
small group discussions to help encourage ac-
countability and discipleship. Our next class

MINISTRY OF THE DIACONATE
A good place to start is to know the meaning of the words we use – in this case it is
DIACONATE, DEACON.
Wikipedia says: The word deacon is derived from the Greek word (διάκονος),
diákonos which in standard ancient Greek means "servant", "waiting-man", "minister", or
"messenger". The essential connotation of the word is “service”. A Deacon serves. A Deacon is
for the good of the community. This is how the ministry of service has biblical roots. As the
early community of believers began to grow in numbers, there was a ‘murmuring’ that some
‘previously considered’ gentiles were being neglected in the daily distribution of food and
necessities. The apostles then sought out men of example who were entrusted with this task
while the presbyters (priests) were primarily concerned with worship and sacred rites. Further,
as the Church made progress in numbers and ‘understanding’, a Deacon was one who, in the
course of final preparation for the Order of Presbyter, was admitted to the clerical state as a
Deacon. This role of Deacon was called ‘transitional’. Still called the same today. When Holy
Mother the Church, in serving the community of believers, found the need to ordain men
(sometimes married) as ‘helpers in the ministry’, the role of Deacon became prominent without
losing the originality of the essential service the person rendered. Even today, the role of
Deacon is primarily one of service. A further recognition of the person so ordained is to assist
the Presbyter in the celebration of the Eucharist. This role thus permits the Deacon to perform
ritual duties except presiding at the Sacraments of the Eucharist and Reconciliation (hearing
confessions). Hence the Deacon, with the consent of the local Bishop (and Presbyter of the
Parish Church) could proclaim the Gospel, preach the Word (Homily), lead the General
Intercessions of the Faithful, baptize, perform parts of the Funeral Rite and other ‘assisting’
tasks. The sacramental Anointing of the Sick is still the ministry of the Presbyter. The Deacon,
unless employed by the Church (for which he is remunerated and thus able to care for his
family and dependents), performs his service-ministry as was originally intended of the role.
Here at Blessed Sacrament we have the generous ministry of four dedicated Deacons:
Kurt Herbst, Joseph Keating, James Moore and Jerry White. THANK YOU, DEACONS!
