W ine tourism is taking an evermore important role in the

international wine business and is perceived as one of

the most important driving forces of tourism together with art

and natural beauty.

The Great Wine Capitals Global Network, which brings together nine famous

wine areas among the best in the world, aims to become more and more a

point of reference for the wine lovers, and beyond. The idea is to create new

synergies across the Network between wine regions that recognize in wine a

cultural value going beyond the hedonistic pleasure of tasting. This trend is

proving to be a winning ace even against the toughest economic crisis.

As President of the Network I am very pleased and honored to introduce the

winners of the "2013 Best Of Wine Tourism Contest", because, in a difficult

year like the one just passed, these companies have continued to invest,

demonstrating to believe in this important resource. I would say that it is

thanks to their work and constant search for high quality that valuable

synergies have been created among different wine territories, giving valuable

results to all aspects of the wine sector.

My congratulations to the 2013 Best Of Wine Tourism winners, for their success

and extraordinary work.

Bilbao, the most important city in northern Spain, is located on the coast

of the Bay of Biscay. It is today a rich and vibrant city, with important

cultural spaces such as the Guggenheim Museum, and the gleaming, arched

footbridge, the Pasarela de Uribitarte, designed by Spaniard Santiago Calatrava.

It is also the gateway to the Rioja wine region, with its centuries old traditions

and rich and varied regional cuisine.

The architectural treasures of Bilbao - where even the metro system has been

designed by Sir Norman Foster, winner of the prestigious Pritzker Architecture

Prize - has carried over into its neighbouring wine district, and the stunning

scenery of Rioja is contrasted with an ever growing number of startling,

excitingly designed wineries, cellars and welcome centres.

FLORENCE

One of the most evocative names in the world, Florence is located in the

heart of Tuscany, a region of rolling hills, stately cypress trees, ancient

olive groves and endless vistas of vineyards reaching down to the Mediterranean

sea. The Medieval city of Florence, with its iconic art galleries and museums, is

of Tuscany. The heart of Tuscany is found among the central hills of Chianti, and

its soul in the Sangiovese grape, making rich and gentle Chianti Classico. Wine

tourism here unrolls at the same leisurely pace as the rest of life - art courses

among the vines, walking or horse riding through vineyards, food and wine

matching making the most of the luscious Italian foodstuffs, from sun-drenched

tomatoes to rich wild boar pastas.

Fattoria di LamoleThis winery is owned by the Socci family, whorestored the terraces in the vineyards in 2003.New vines were then planted, aiming to reach anoptimal level of mechanization as well asmaintaining untouched the typical landscapeelements. The stones in the wall are likeaccumulators of heat and contribute to producea very fine wine. The chromatic symphony of thelandscape goes along with the symphony of thearomas of Lamole’s wines. MAYENCE I RHEINHESSEN

The city of Mainz is a vibrant German wine centre that borders the great

wine rivers of the Rhine and the Main, in the state of Rheinland-Pfalz. It is

home to the German Wine Institute, the German Wine Fund, and the Association

of German Prädikat Wine Estates (VDP. Die Prädikatsweingüter), which brings

together the top winemakers of Germany with the wine merchants of the world.

No less than 6 wine regions surround the cathedral city - including Rheinhessen,

Germany’s largest wine-growing area. Today a young generation of winegrowers

has reinvigorated the region with their creativity, passion and knowhow, getting

the fullest expression out of local grape varieties Riesling, Müller Thurgau and

Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir). The city of Mainz is known for its university,

its great food and drink scene, and the excellence of its cultural centres such as

the Gutenberg Museum. Mainz was awarded Germany´s City of Science 2011.

PORTO

Nestling in the northwest corner of Portugal, the dusky pinks, yellows and

blues of the Unesco-historic centre of Porto glow in the evening sunshine,

as the buildings look over to the historic Porto wine cellars on the bank of the

Douro river, where the major port houses have their warehouses, many offering

fascinating visitor centres for the wine tourist.

This is a romantic and beautiful city to explore, and just an hour from the

stunning Douro Valley, where steep terraces of vines form some of the most

spectacular landscape in the world. These vines make the Touriga grapes to be

transformed into port and increasingly into a rich still red wine. It is also a short

drive from Vinho Verde, home to the light, fresh white wine that has made such

a renaissance in recent years.
