1 - Running Club is back!! Tuesdays at 8.00am

Page 2: Bambara Newsletter - Term 2 Week 7

In the past couple of weeks during the What Went Well Assemblies we have seen and heard about some amazing learning that is taking place in our classrooms.

During Miss Deed’s class assembly, the Pre Primary students looked very cute singing the song of Pete

the Cat who was very resilient when his white shoes got dirty. The class spoke about their STEM project.

They are looking at the impact of bush fires on the built and natural environment. They shared their solutions to how these environments can be rebui lt.

The STEM Sustainability theme was continued in Mrs Amba and Mrs Kervin ’s Year 4/5 assembly in which

the class shared their involvement in the Adopt a Coastline program promoted by the City of Joondalup

(COJ). Students met with the COJ staff to weed and plant native species in the Mullaloo Dunes. We have

heard that the Adopt a Coastline program will not operate in the future but hope the COJ will reconsider

funding the program.

During the assembly Mitchell, Koby and Alisa presented their latest pieces of writing. We were in awe at the quality of the writing being produced.

Attached are examples of a Narrative and Persuasive Text

The enhancements to students writing since we adopted the Talk For Writing approach across the

school is having an outstanding impact on students’ writing skills and is a key to raising attainment. A

feature of the Talk For Writing program is that students internalise a story by speaking it out aloud. This is known as ‘talking the text’.

Once students know the text off by heart, time is spent analysing the story and doing short bursts of

writing focussing on spelling, language patterns, etc. This stage is known as the imitation stage. The

imitation stage is followed by the innovation stage in which students write a text along the same lines as

the writing they have learnt off by heart. The final stage in this writing process is where the students independently write a text transferring all the skills they learnt in previous writing sessions.

We recently had a visit from Caitlin Collins, the newly elected member for Hillarys. Ms Collins recently

promised funds towards a nature playground and IT equipment for the school. She met with members

of the administration team where we discussed ways in which educational outcomes for our students

could be improved. During her visit to the Year 5/6 class she was put on the spot when Alice, a Year 5

student asked, ‘Now that you have been elected, what will you do for the Padbury Community?', this

led to a very spirited discussion about the needs of the Padbury community. Not surprisingly but very high on the list was the establishment of a skate park.

Good News about our Basketball Courts

Meegan Payne the school's Corporate Services Manager has had another win for Bambara PS. Meegan is

like a dog with a bone. She has spent the last decade campaigning the replacement of the basketball

Page 6: Bambara Newsletter - Term 2 Week 7

courts. Thanks to her tenacity the Department of Education has agreed to replace the very dangerous courts with new asphalt. Hooray and thank you Meegan.

The basketball court resurfacing program starts Tuesday 8 June and runs for two weeks. The courts and

adjacent areas will be fenced off as will parts of the Kiss and Drive for heavy haulage trucks. Movement

for students and parents will be restricted. Kitchen Garden Club and Loose Parts Play will be cancelled

for two weeks and areas such as the senior playground will be out of bounds while workers are on site.

Please stay alert and safe while the works are in progress.

Messages from the Deputy Principal

Value for the Fortnight: Challenge and Inquiry

12 - Generally, the inquiry process involves the following four steps:

1. Understand the problem.

Page 21: Bambara Newsletter - Term 2 Week 7

2. Make a plan.

3. Carry out the plan.

4. Look back and reflect.

Inquiry implies involvement that leads to understanding. Involvement in learning implies possessing

skills and attitudes that permit you to seek resolutions to questions and issues while you construct new

knowledge. Inquiry learning involves several factors: a context for questions, a framework for questions,

a focus for questions, and different levels of questions. Well-designed inquiry learning produces

knowledge formation that can be widely applied. Adults can encourage children to ask questions and

find out the answers. Supporting and encouraging them when they are curious and interested in a

range of topics will also assist inquiry learning. Model learning and be a life long learner yourself. Admit it if you don’t know and find out – showing children how you go about this.

Library News

Kindergarten students enjoyed Get that Dog and did a word study of all the language in the text. This week they are reading Mercer Mayer text.

Pre Primary students enjoyed The Day the Boa ate the Washing and completed a sequencing

activity. The writing was a challenge and we will do more of this. This week they are reading Mercer Mayer text.

Year 1 students are now working on A Porcupine Named Fluffy by Helen Lester. This is a funny text with the message that you just have to be yourself.

Year 2 students have been introduced to author Tedd Arnold and his text Hi Fly Guy. They are working

on character studies and analysing the book chapter by chapter.

Year 3 students are working on grammar activities using Enid Blyton extract as their stimulus.

Year 4 and 5 students are now studying classic authors such as Lewis Carrol who wrote Alice in Wonderland and now A A Milne.

Year 5 and 6 students have finished their research. They had peer feedback last week and this week will

present their research to their Pre Primary buddy. Then they will complete the KWL (what I know, what I

want to know and what I've learnt) together. Some of these projects will be presented as part of the library WWW.

It’s been a busy time in the library and I have also bought some new books. If any parents would be

happy to help with covering please let me know by a phone call or pop in to the library to see Mrs Morecroft and pick up some books.

Kitchen Garden is now in full swing on Friday mornings from 8am. It would be really lovely to have more

parents and students join us but many thanks to those girls and boys and parents who are turning up

every week to plant, weed and fertilise. There will be NO kitchen garden for the next three weeks due to

the School Development Day and the netball resurfacing. We look forward to seeing you back on Friday

25 June.
