ShopperHe told me that they recently
did some work for a local family. The mom and kids were constantly sick, dealing with allergies and congestion. “We came in and did a whole house system evaluation and made several recommenda-tions. We replaced their air duct system and their allergy symptoms cleared up immediately.”
It’s amazing how all those things you don’t see can have such an impact on your comfort and health.
The professionals at Air Resolutions begin each project with a visual inspection of the home to reveal the sources of air leakage, dust, allergens and humidity. Then they’ll recommend solutions that homeowners can take in steps, as their budgets allow. Some services Air Resolutions provides are energy audits, insula-tion, air sealing, duct cleaning, sealing, whole duct replacement and moisture control through vapor barrier installation or crawl space encapsulation and drainage systems.
As more people realize the importance of clean air and energy efficiency, they’re contacting Air Resolu-tions to perform comprehensive home energy audits, even incorporating these audits into the home inspection process before buying a house. Now that’s smart!
As for my home’s utility costs and air quality issues, we’ll see what the guys at Air Resolutions find when they come out tomorrow. Set up your own consultation and free estimate by visiting www.airresolutions.com or calling 804-887-0229.
LOWER YOUR UTILITY COSTS AND IMPROVE AIR QUALITY WITH AIR RESOLUTIONSby Angela Weight
A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO, my husband and I forked out a few thousand bucks on a new, more energy-efficient heating and air conditioning unit. We were hoping it would lower our ridiculously high utility bills and do a better job cooling our house this summer. Though the unit has a high Energy Star rating, it hasn’t solved our problems like we’d hoped.
My neighbor, probably tired of hearing me complain about our electric bills, suggested I talk to the guys at Air Resolutions. “They’ll take a good look at your whole house and how everything interacts as a system. Your ductwork, crawl space, attic, humidity in the air – they inspect everything.”
I called Air Resolutions and spoke to Charlie Martin. He and co-owner Chris Joyner have been solving energy efficiency and air quality issues for Richmond homeowners for over a decade. And they received an A+ rating by the Better Business Bureau for excellent customer service.
According to Charlie, the HVAC unit is just one piece of our home’s entire “comfort” system. Ductwork that isn’t sealed properly can leak out as much as 45 percent of the air circulating inside the average home. That “good air” is replaced by outside air seeping in from a damp crawl space or a dusty attic, areas that are breeding grounds for molds and allergens.
“When your ducts, crawl space and attic are sealed properly, the inside ‘conditioned air’ isn’t able to escape through invisible cracks,” notes Charlie. “This enables your insulation and HVAC systems to work more efficiently. That, in turn, lowers your utility bills because you’re not trying to heat or cool the whole outdoors.”
This could explain our astronomical utility costs and my constant stuffy nose.

Recipes From the Kitchen of Laura Payne, Personal Chef for Gourmet Your Waywww.gourmetyourway05.com • 804-514-6812
DIRECTIONS
1. Heat oven to 300 degrees. Grease and flour a Bundt pan.
2. Beat butter and cream cheese until creamy. Gradually add sugar and mix well. Add eggs one at a time. Add vanilla extract.
3. Combine flour and salt and gradually add to butter mixture, beating at low speed until just blended.
4. Lightly coat the blueberries with cooking spray and toss with the cinnamon sugar.
5. Pour 2 cups of batter into the Bundt pan. Sprinkle 1/2 cup of the blueberries evenly, and add another 2 cups of batter and 3/4 cup of blueberries. Add a final 2 cups of batter and remainder of the blueberries and gently “spread” them into the batter with a rubber spatula, just enough to have them sink a bit.
6. Bake for 1 hour and 40 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack for 10-15 minutes, then invert the pan. Let cool completely and drizzle with lemon glaze.
INGREDIENTS
Prep Time 20 minutesBake Time 1 hour. 40 minutes
• 1 1/2 cups butter, softened
• 1 8-ounce package of cream cheese,
softened
• 3 cups sugar
• 6 large eggs
• 3 cups all-purpose flour
• 1/8 teaspoon salt
• 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
• 2 cups blueberries, washed and dried
• Cooking spray
• Cinnamon sugar (2 tablespoons sugar,
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon)
BLUEBERRY CREAM CHEESE POUND CAKE WITH LEMON GLAZE
**I always have extra batter left over so I make a mini loaf of pound cake and put any remaining cinnamon sugar in the middle of the batter, then bake for 40-50 minutes. Peaches work well in this recipe, too.
GLAZE
• 2 cups powdered sugar
• 2 tablespoons milk
• 1 tablespoon lemon juice
• 1 teaspoon lemon zest

BEAT THE HEAT WITH A GETAWAY TO COZY ACRES By Steve Cook
YOU’VE HEARD IT SAID that while you can talk about the weather, you can’t do much about it. Well, that’s not entirely true.
For instance, if you’ve been talking about this hot, muggy summer, you can get in your RV and head out to Cozy Acres Campground, right here in Powhatan.
If you haven’t yet discovered Cozy Acres, this would be the perfect time to do so. Larry Daniel, who owns the campground with his wife, Jean, discovered the area over 40 years ago.
Back in 1972, he and Jean were operating an RV dealership in Chesterfield County near Chippenham Parkway. Upon learning that his rent on the property was going up due to a new mall being built across the street – Cloverleaf Mall – he decided it was time to head west.
He found a piece of land out in Powhatan County and informed Jean that he was going to buy the land and open a campground. Larry says that Jean cried when he broke the news.
“That’s true,” she told me when I spoke with her recently. “It was so far out. There wasn’t anything out that way.”
But Larry had a dream and a vision. “I found a place I loved and could raise my family and thought that it would be a great place for other families to come and enjoy the country and each other.”
Over the next couple of years, Jean says, she and her husband and their two sons, Scott and Preston, would commute from their home in Chesterfield in the evenings and weekends to help develop the property. Finally, on the July 4th weekend of 1974, Cozy Acres Campground opened. Shortly after that, the Daniels built their home at Cozy Acres.
Scott and his family have a home on the property, and now he manages the campground. Preston has his own business in the area, but his wife, Joy, helps out during the summer when she is not teaching first grade.
