Mrs. Emma E. Crawford, 85, of Newa-gyo, went to be with our Lord in the pres-ence of her children, Thursday, July 28,2011, at Faith Hospice at Trillium Woodsin Byron Center.

She was born Emma Elizabeth Moult-er in Howard City, the daughter of Rosa(Snyder) and Otis Moulter on Nov. 14,1925. She married Harry Crawford on

May 5, 1956, in Howard City and he pre-ceded her in death April 24, 1986. Emmafound joy in giving to others and wasthankful for the help she received fromContinue Care of Fremont and SarahCen-ter Day Center of Wyoming. She attendedResurrection Life in Grandville.

She will be greatly missed. She leavesher children, Elizabeth Mills of Newaygo,Otis and Carrie Crawford of Byron Cen-ter, John and Amy Crawford of Newaygo,MaryAnn Matzen of Belding and Berthaand Fred Corey of Morley. She greatlyloved her 13 grandchildren and sevengreat-grandchildren. Besides her hus-band, she was preceded in death by hergrandson, Josh Mills. Bernard FlachsBernard Edward Flachs, 81, of Sand

Lake, died Tuesday, July 26, 2011, athome surrounded by his family.

Bernie was bornSept. 29, 1929, in Re-mus, the son of thelate William and Rosa(Snider) Flachs. Hegrew up in Remus and

attended St. MichaelsCatholic School dur-ing his elementary years and graduatedfrom Remus PublicHigh School in 1947.

On Jan. 15, 1949, he married Leatrice JoyHoover from Blanchard at St. MichaelsCatholic Church. He worked for McIn-erny Spring and Wire in Grand Rapids for40 years, where he carried a dual licensefor millwright and boiler operator. Bernieenjoyed farming, was a trustee for Pier-son Township for several years, and helda private pilots license and enjoyed en-tertaining family and friends with planerides off the farm air strip. He was an avidoutdoors man and enjoyed shing bass

and hunting small and big game.He most enjoyed sharing time with

family. Surviving are his wife, Leatrice;children, Sandra Patin, Daniel (Kathleen)Flachs, Kristi (Carl) Haywood, Steven(Mary) Flachs, Gary (Debra) Flachs, Jane(Paul) Ringler and Kelly Slagel; 18 grand-children and 11 great-grandchildren; andsister, Barbara Foster. He was preceded

in death by sons-in-law, Robert Patin andDavid Slagel; brothers, Maurice, Michael,Francis and Jack Flachs; sisters, RitaCrowley and Anna Dean; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrat-ed at Mary Queen of Apostles CatholicChurch, Sand Lake. Rev. Fr. Joseph W.Kenshol, celebrant. Private family inter-ment at St. Michaels Cemetery, Remus.In lieu of owers, memorials may be

Harold GundermanHarold Gunderman, 86, of Coral,

passed away July 23 at his residence.He was born May 14, 1925, in Gratiot

County, the son of Grover and Bertha(Guild) Gunderman. During his workingyears he owned and operated Coral Hard-ware. He loved motorcycles, woodwork-ing and hobby farming. Harold served hiscountry in the Army during World WarII.

In 1949, he married Laura March, whosurvives. Also surviving are four children,Connie Timmons of Holland, Leonard(Kathy) Gunderman of Coral, DouglasGunderman of Alaska and Loreen (John)Chadwick of Coral; seven grandchil-dren and eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Cecil and Ronald; two sisters,Shirley and Ruby and several nieces andnephews. He was preceded in death by his

parents and several brothers and sisters.Memorial services took place at PiersonBible Church with Pastor Tom Sluys of-ciating. Arrangements were entrusted toThe Heckman Funeral Home of HowardCity.

Donna KimballDonna Kimball, 69, of Newaygo,

passed away July 28, 2011, at her resi-

dence.She was born June 12, 1942, in Alba,

the daughter of Clyde and Laura (Palmiti-er) Tinker. During her working years she worked at Mr. Easy Clean Laundromatin Grand Rapids for many years as wellas other various jobs. She loved painting,crafts, reading, crocheting, collecting an-gels and spending time with her family.

In 1960, she married Dennis Kimball who survives. Also surviving are threechildren, Dennis Kimball Jr. of Newaygo,Wanda Kimball of Newaygo and Robert(Karen) Kimball of Greenville; six grand-children and ve great-grandchildren;sister, Lorraine Desmond of Florida andseveral nieces and nephews. She waspreceded in death by her parents; a son,Dwaine and two sisters, Charlotte andShirley.

Funeral services took place at theHeckman Funeral home with PastorDoug Bennett ofciating.

July 27, 2011, at Metron of Cedar Springs.He was born March 15, 1929, in Grand Rapids, the

son of Anthony and Mary (Kozinck) Mienko. During hisworking years he worked for Widdicomb furniture as anelevator operator for 22 years. He loved watching sunsetsand woodworking. He was a member of Christ The KingCatholic Church.

In 1958, he married Letha Curry who survives. Also

surviving are two sisters-in-law, Beverly Chatterson ofKentwood and Barbara Hansma of Grand Rapids andseveral nieces and nephews. He was preceded in deathby his parents and two brothers and two sisters. FuneralMass took place at Christ The King Catholic Church withFather James Wyse as the Celebrant with Burial in TheHoly Cross Cemetery. Memorials to Hospice or AmericanLung Association may be left at the Heckman Funeralhome.

Dvd TbuDavid Tebeau, 50, of Howard City, passed away July

30, 2011, at his residence where he was surrounded bythe love of his family and friends after a brief battle withpancreatic cancer.

David was a loyal friend, an electrician, a talented woodworker and even crafted an 18-and-a-half footChris Craft boat. He also was an avid sherman, hunterand boater. David lived his life with no regrets. He was afaithful member of Bethel Lutheran Church.

He was born March 26, 1961, in Muskegon, the son ofWilliam and Mary Ann (Sutherland) Tebeau. Survivingare his wife Jeanine Tebeau; mother Mary Ann Tebeau ofGrand Rapids; his two beagles, Bella and Shimp; brotherSteven (Diana); sister Anne Mary (Tebeau); nephew An-dre Todd all of Grand Rapids; mother- and father-in-law,James (Carol) LaRue of Arizona; sisters-in-law, Laura(Mike) Gertz of Wasington, D.C. and their child Noelleand Katherine (Matt) Eppley of Arizona and their chil-dren, Rachel, Brenna and Reed.

He was preceded in death by his father, William. Fu-neral services took place at the Bethel Lutheran Churchwith Pastor Joseph Fremer ofciating with burial in the

Reynolds Cemetery. Memorials to Spectrum Health Hos-pice may be left at the Heckman Funeral Home.

I am a proud Citizen of HowardCity because I believe that it is a Com-munity that has not just survived butmoved forward. After reading theletter to the Editor What happenedto Howard City I would like to clarifywhat has happened to Howard City.

Wter Rtes: Your water bill pays for two

systems the Water System and the

Sewer system, both are calculated ontotal gallons used. These rates areset not be make a prot but to sup-port the operation and maintenanceof the system and are in line withmost communities our size. The water and sewer accounts are sup-ported only by users; the Village andDDA also pay water and sewer billsto these accounts. Over the past fewyears the Village has been required

by the DEQ to make upgrades to oursystems luckily we have been able tosecure grants that made less impacton the rates of the users. If a userwishes to obtain a separate meter tometer the water used for wateringlawns or owers or for sprinklers forchildren they should check with the Village ofce, this would eliminatethe sewer usage charge to these ac-tivities.

Briks:Many of the residents have asked

WHY? What Is It Costing ME? Theanswer to that question is Tax Dollars.

However they are not tax dollars youhave paid the Village of Howard Citythey are tax dollars you have alreadysent to Washington and Lansing thatwere obtained through grants fromMichigan Economic DevelopmentCorp. and the Michigan Departmentof Transportation. Those funds if notused by the Village of Howard Citywould go to some other Community.Where would you rather have those

tax dollars spent, Howard City orsome other community? A portionof the Streetscape project is fundedby the Downtown Development Au-thority, the funds to pay that portionis thru Tax Increment Financing.The does not raise anyones taxesand is not paid for from any General,Street, Water or Sewer account.

Empty Houses:Between 2000 and 2010 Howard

City housing units grew by 117 units,in 2000 there were 50 vacant homesand in 2010 there were 58 vacant

homes. So with an increase of 117homes there was only an increase of8 vacant homes. Howard City wasone of very few Citys and Villagesthat had an overall decrease in vacanthomes between 2000 and 2010.

The population grew from 1598in 2000 to 1808 in 2010 which is a13.1 percent increase, which was thelargest percentage increase of anyCity or Village in Montcalm County.

With growth we will encountersome problems but the positives faroutweigh the negatives and if we work as a Community together wecan continue build a better HowardCity.

VaccinationsThanks to immunizations, most chil-

dren in the United States today lead muchhealthier lives than generations past. And while vaccines have reduced many infec-tious diseases to low levels in the UnitedStates, vacationers can bring old and new

diseases back into the country. Measles, forexample, is still prevalent in other parts ofthe world and has been linked to recent out- breaks in the U.S. Unvaccinated childrenare at risk.

Thats why routine, up-to-date vaccina-tions are as important today as they haveever been. There may be tears, but the painassociated with most immunizations is mi-nor. Consult your pediatrician about keep-ing your childs vaccination schedule up todate.

Food Allergies and IllnessesIf your child suffers from food allergies

or other health issues that require man-agement during the school day, be sure tocontact the school nurse and update yourchild`s health plan at school. This will en-sure that proper steps are taken if the childdevelops symptoms while at school, and

that his or her activities are not restrictedunnecessarily.

A childs health can change from yearto year or even month to month, so makesure the school is well aware of how to han-dle new conditions or restrictions. Parentsshould also check that you have provided

Annual Physicals Along with your childs regular annual

physical, aspiring athletes should get asports physical before the start of the sea-son. Childrens bodies are vulnerableto injury, and as youngsters move throughmiddle childhood -- becoming bigger,

stronger, faster, and more aggressive -- theincidence of injuries rises.

Make sure your athlete wears a well-ft-ted helmet, mouthpiece, face guard, pad-ding, eye gear, protective cup, or oth-er equipment appropriate for the sport. Ofcourse, regardless of whether your child ison a competitive team or not, parents shouldpromote physical activity for all kids.

Sinus TroubleMany people complain of sinus problems. I used to be one of them. I never had any nasal congestion or itchy eyes,

until I came to Michigan. Then, slowly over the years things got bad, until the early 1990s, when I was taking antibiotics atleast eight times a year for sinus infections. I had become sensitive to everything.

Three days after going to work for Dr. Grant Born at the Born Clinic in Grand Rapids, he said to me, You have foodallergies and Candida! I am tired of hearing you sniffing all the time. You need to fix that. I was amazed. He knew withoutan examination what was wrong. I was embarrassed because I did not even realize I was sniffing and snorting all thetime.

I was allergic to 38 of the 102 foods we tested. And I was loaded with Candida, which is a yeast commonly found inthe digestive tract. It does not belong in the sinuses. Mayo Clinic published a study that found this yeast in the sinuses ofmany people with chronic sinusitis. Unfortunately the numbers of yeast grow every time one takes an antibiotic. The yeast

then cause inflammation and blockage of the sinus drain passages and then bacterial infections start again. Now the needfor more antibiotics keeps the vicious cycle going along with a downward spiral in general levels of health.

People that have this problem are almost always allergic to dairy. (Remember The Leaky Gut Syndrome?) Often wheat,eggs, soy, and corn become contributing foods. The yeast causes two problems. We can become allergic to them. Thiscauses an increase in the general allergen load. And they can give off toxic by-products which can cause fatigue andfibromyalgia. Because of the yeast allergy, the yeast and mold containing foods like bread, mushrooms, and alcohol drinksare often culprits. Diets high in sugar tend to feed yeast so sugars and starchy foods add to the problem.

The addition of a supplement, Probiotic, is a must. These are good bacteria that are naturally found in our body, sinuses,digestive tract, and vagina. They normally help keep the yeast in check, but antibiotics kill them, so they are often out ofbalance, letting the yeast grow wildly. Probiotics (usually Acidophilus) should be taken orally, 2-4billion units per day. For chronic sinusitis, it is beneficial to put some Probiotic in saline nasal sprayand squirt them up the nose four or five times per day.

Within six month my snotty nose was much better. I only had post nasal drainage if I cheated ondairy products. Most of the other allergic foods I was able to add back in on a limited basis as mybodys sensitivity decreased. I have not had to take an antibiotic in over 15 years. What an amazingchange.

So keep in mind, sinus infections may have an allergic base underneath it. There may be a yeast,Candida Albicans contributing to the problem. And you may need to replace the good health florawith some Probiotic. All and all, you can solve this problem. The bonus was that I eliminated 30pounds of belly fat during that six months as well as feeling much, much better.

They started with joint custody. In 2009 the

Chippewa County Circuit Court granted Ms.

Mattson and Mr. Stark joint custody of their

daughter, who was still a very young child.

Both parents doted on her. Both wanted the

best for her. For the next six months they tried

to make it work, but there had been a lot of

love lost in their breakup. And Mother could

not keep her ill feelings toward Dad under

control.

Mother was antagonistic. While she was

with either parent the child was well cared for

and loved. The schedule was two days with

one parent, two days with the other, and alter-

nating three-day weekends. Thus each parent

had five uninterrupted days at a time. But there

were words during exchanges. Mother dis-

played anger. She was belligerent. She shouted

in front of the child. She went out of her way

to let him know how she felt about him. Each

time, the child was with her. Eventually Moth-

er lost custody.

She should have bit her lip. The Judge dis-

cussed the evidence: in March, 2010 Motherhad come to Fathers home with the child in

tow, shouting and cursing, and refused to leave

when asked. Dad had then openly videotaped

her ranting which he showed the judge during

the custody hearing. On another occasion Dad

already had the child in his arms when Mother

decided to refuse to let the child go because

Dad had showed up late. Mother grabbed her

and sent her into the house. On more than one

occasion Mother had verbally assaulted Fa-

ther in front of the child (meaning yelled accu-

sations and/or threats). And once, Mother was

so angry she told the child it would be okay to

run away from Fathers home.

Theres a law the Best Interests law. A

judge can only change custody if the court

finds that based on 13 different factors it

weighs the change is in the minor childs

best interests. For the most part, these parents

could have been found equal on most factors

but for Moms repeated inability to be nice.

Even if she didnt like Dad, and even if he

might have been a real schmuck in her eyes,

she had crossed the line with her inability to

hold her tongue in front of the child.

Clear and convincing evidence. There was

clear and convincing evidence in court that

since entry of the last custody order the con-

ditions mother was subjecting the child to

meaning how Mom was treating Dad in front

of the child could have a significant effect

on the childs well-being. Heres the big les-

son - Dad didnt have to prove that Moms

behavior had already affected the childs well-

being. It was only necessary that it could have

a significant effect. (Well, of course it could.

Imagine how upset a child could be if she has

to see one parent treat the other badly - evenonce!) So be nice to your childs other parent.

Hold your tongue. Besides, its what we expect

from grown-ups (and politicians, but thats for

another column).
