    DBA NAMES SALINAS

    NEW DIRECTOR

Big Rapids resident to use experience as

leader of Evart DDA in new role

BIG RAPIDS Darcy Salinas is taking on

the challenge of increasing foot traffic in

    downtown Big Rapids.

s new director of the Big Rapids Downtown

    usiness Association, Salinas wants to

hange the mindset of shopping at box stores

nd chain restaurants, to create a culture

hat caters to local businesses downtown

    articularly amongst Ferris State University

    tudents.

Downtown is competing with all of the box

tores on Perry Avenue. A lot of people,

hen they come to Big Rapids, they getff U.S.-131 and thats pretty much as far

s they get, Salinas said. I also want to

et Ferris students downtown, because the

niversity is a huge resource and asset to the

ommunity, but how many kids are walking

owntown for things? I see students

alking to Applebees, and if theyre walking

hat far, they can certainly walk toward

owntown from campus. We have to make

hat connection to where downtown has

hings they want to do and places they want

    o go to.

he 26-year-old Big Rapids resident and

vart native, has been the director of Evarts

    owntown Development Authority for nearly

hree years. Starting Sept. 1, she will take

ver the part-time DBA director position in Big

apids, replacing Big Rapids Department of

ublic Works Director Mark Gifford, who will

emain as director in the interim.

he city contracted with the DBA in 2004

o have Gifford spend about 10 percent of

is time as its director. However, the city

ommission decided in February that the DBA

does not need as much involvement from city

government and asked the organization to

    find a replacement.

The DBA started collecting applications for

the director position in May, and interviewed

four candidates earlier this month. DBA board

Vice President Bill Stanek said Salinas had

the experience they were looking for.

She has three years of experience doing

the same thing we need here, Stanek said.

She has a younger perspective with some

fresh ideas. Some of Evarts events, like their

fireworks and car show, put ours to shame.

They have a lot of things that we need.

Salinas plans to use her experience from

Evart to help her promote downtown Big

Rapids. One of her first orders of business

will be to meet with the DBA executive board

and as many members as she can to help

her set goals for the association.

I want to sit down with them one-on-one to

see where theyre at, what their goals are

or the DBA and their business and get to

now them better. That way Ill be in a better

osition to help them pursue those goals,

    he said.

    alinas graduated from Northern Michigan

niversity in 2007 with a degree in

    nvironmental science with an emphasis

n environmental policy and a minor in

    eographic information systems. She also

orks part-time at the Muskegon River

    atershed Assembly as an administrative

    ssistant.

resident John Mediema is excited to have

Salinas join the Big Rapids group. Mediema,

Stanek and Gifford were on the committee to

find a new director. Gifford was not available

    for comment.

Darcy had the best qualifications out of all the

applicants it was her previous leadership

and experience in organizing events that

helped her get the job, Mediema said. She

has real experience from working in Evart.

Shes done a lot of good work up there, and I

think she can do a good job for us.

As director, Salinas will oversee all

    DBA activities, including weekly musical

performances in Pocket Park during the

summer, the annual Fall Fest and more.

In addition, she will promote downtown,

raise funds for the DBA, work to fill vacant

storefronts downtown and act as the liaison

between the downtown businesses and city

    hall.

She will be like the central hub of information

for all DBA activities, and have a hand

    in planning downtown events, Mediema

    added.

    REMOTE PC REPAIR AT

    YOUR FINGERTIPS

(NewsUSA) - In a social media powered

    society, instant gratification is something

we have come to expect. More of our

daily routines are executed online, be they

personal or professional, so when our

computer crashes so does our productivity.

In the not-so-distant past, PC problems,

virus removal and most other computer-

related issues were resolved by carting your

PC or laptop into a service center. This is

not an easy burden to bear when time is of

the essence. With immediate response in

    high demand, computer support companies

have moved their services online, offering

    comprehensive tech support without the

hassle of waiting at in-store service lines.

With the ability to get news, updates and

results online in real-time, shouldnt you be

    able to access computer troubleshooting

    online when an issue arises?

In an effort to harness the potential of remote

access, some standout IT businesses are

implementing remote services to create a

better user experience for their clients. Geeks

On Call, a trusted provider of on-site IT

    services nationwide, recently announced the

launch of their Remote PC Repair Services.

If a persons computer suddenly crashes,

slows down or gets a virus, Geeks On

Call is there with comprehensive technical

support to see the issues through to solution.

Because the troubled computer is remotely

accessed through the Internet, there is no

need to wait for a technician to make a house

call. However, if there is no Internet accessto the computer, Geeks on Call still has an

on-site assistance option -- in many cases,

it can get a technician to you the same day

you call. And unlike other services, it can

dispatch a technician directly to your location

with the ability to refund the majority of the

    service call.

By taking advantage of remote computer

repair with services like those offered by

Geeks On Call, users will see real-time

    solutions for serious computing problems.

Remote Services are available 8 a.m. to

midnight in the customers time zone at 1-800-

905-GEEK (4335). For more information, visit

Make Your Money Go the Extra Mile

(NewsUSA) - Is the cost of household items

getting you down? During tough times,

families are forced to cut their spending

down to only the bare necessities. Yet, even

the basic essentials can take a big bite outof a financial budget. The key to trimming

your bottom line doesnt mean skimping on

necessities; it means saving money on them.

So when shopping for your must-haves,

make your dollar stretch even further with

    these money saving tips:

Switch to LED lightbulbs. The electricity used

over the lifetime of a single incandescent

light bulb costs five to ten times the original

purchase price of the bulb itself. LEDs last

up to 10 times longer than the typical bulb,

and although theyre more expensive than

others, the cost is recouped over time and in

    battery savings.

Invest in a water filter. Dont like the taste

of tap water, but spending wads of cash on

bottled water? A quality water filter can cut the

costs of your water-drinking tremendously. A

Brita filter costs around $20, but you must

refill when it runs out. A family of four who

drinks two gallons a day combined can save

upwards of $2,500 a year by using a filter.

    Install a programmable thermostat. This

handy device is a crucial addition to your

    long-term money-saving strategy. Ranging

in price from $30 to $130, it allows you

    to automatically regulate your homes

temperature at certain times of the day.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save 10 percent on energy costs a

year by setting your thermostat back 10-15

degrees for eight hours out of the day.

Buy HP Ink. When stocking up on office

supplies, make sure youre getting the

quality and reliability youre paying for. A

recent study found that HP ink cartridges

print on average up to two times the pages

of refilled cartridges tested. And while HP ink

cartridges had no failures, the overall failure

rate for the refilled cartridges was 72 percent,

    according to the study (http://www.buyerslab.

    com/news/viewarticle.asp?article=74815).

Companies like HP offer online options (www.

    shopping.hp.com/supplies) for purchasing

new cartridges with ease. Additionally, ink

cartridge recycling programs, such as HP

    Planet Partners (www.hp.com/recycle), help

reduce the environmental impact by diverting

    cartridges from landfills.

Skip the grocery store. Amazon.com helps

you save not only on books and movies,

but groceries, too. It has a program called

Subscribe & Save, where you can sign

up to automatically receive grocery staples

every one, two, three or six months. That

bag of Splenda that costs $10 at your local

grocery store is only $6 on Amazon and ships

to your home for free -- saving you time, gas

    and money.

    THREE HELPFUL TIPS FOR

    RENTING OUT YOUR HOME

(NewsUSA) - Home ownership has always

been a part of the American dream, but that

may be changing. Uncertainty in the housing

market has led many would-be buyers to

believe that rentings the better option.

According to a May 2010 online survey

    commissioned by the National Apartment

Association, 76 percent of consumers think

that renting is preferable to owning a home in

    todays market.

    Likewise, some homeowners believe its

better to rent out their home than to sell it

for less than its worth, if they can sell it all.

Those considering renting out their propert

shouldnt make a hasty decision. Neglecting

to weigh the costs and potential risks could put

first-time landlords in a poor situation. Moco,

Inc., a company that provides screeningservices to property owners, managers and

    employers throughout the United States,

    offers the following tips:

    * Look at the numbers. Renting might not be

the best option. If youre going to lose mone

each month, it might make more sense

to sell, even if you wont get your asking

price. Consider all potential costs, including

property taxes, income taxes on you

tenants rent, maintenance, and the normal

wear and tear your property will experience.

Remember that you wont be able to pocket

all of the rent money; you will have to put a

portion of it back into the property.

    * Find quality tenants. Nightmare tenants

can be, well, a nightmare. Prepare for a

    careful screening process. Many private

landlords cant access the quality screening

    products available to larger businesses

without going through a lengthy certification

process. However, you can avoid time and

expense by asking your applicants to visit

    MyScreeningReport.com. The report includes

a consumer credit report, SSN verification,

    comprehensive criminal search, eviction

search, national sex offender registry search

and an OFAC (federal terrorism database

search -- everything you need to determine

whether a potential tenant meets you

    standards.

    * Use an all-encompassing lease. Whethe

you use a template or hire an attorney to write

your lease, make sure that the lease clearl

states your expectations. The lease should

state who is responsible for what, when you

expect rent to be paid and what penalties you

will impose if it is late.

    DOGS FOSTER ACTIVITY

    WHILE IMPROVING

    VASCULAR HEALTH

(NewsUSA) - Mans best friend provides

    more than mere companionship. Dogs

encourage humans to exercise daily -- come

    rain or shine.

The need to take a daily walk provides dog

owners with a great form of exercise, said

Leila Mureebe, a member of the Societ

for Vascular Surgery. Exercise is good fo

the bodys blood supply, for maintaining

proper body weight and for controlling blood

    pressure.

For persons with high blood pressure -- and

thats one in three Americans over age 20,according to a 2010 Centers for Disease

Control and Prevention report -- Fidos

calming effect can be a life saver.

Studies have disclosed that petting a dog

reduces blood pressure and heart rate.

This stress buster provides positive health

benefits for the owners of 77.5 million dogs

that reside in 39 percent of households,

according to The Humane Society of the

    United States.

High blood pressure and stress contribute

to the fourth leading cause of death in

America: stroke. The National Vital Statistics

    Report indicated that 137,000 Americans

died of stroke in 2010. The American Stroke

    Association estimated that Americans spent

$73.7 billion for stroke-related medical costs

Every 40 seconds, an American suffers a

stroke, said Dr. Mureebe. Strokes occur

suddenly and without warning. Two million

brain cells die every minute during a stroke.

Eighty percent of strokes are preventablethrough risk factor management.

Thirty minutes of daily exercise, not smoking,

and proper nutrition are included in risk factor

    management. A United States National

Institutes of Health-funded study of 2,000

adults discovered that persons who regularly

walked their dogs were more physically

active and less likely to be obese than non-

    dog walkers.

Ive seen improvements in high blood

    pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes

when patients enter into a routine of daily

exercise, not smoking, and healthy eating,

said Dr. Mureebe. A brisk 30-minute walk

with your dog is good for both of you.

IS YOUR CHILD AT RISK WITH

    GRANDPA?

    (NewsUSA) - Grandparents and grandchildren

have much to learn from one another, and

    such valuable relationships should be

cultivated. However, not all grandparents are

fortunate enough to have the health to chase

    after youngsters.

ccording to the National Institute on

    Deafness and Other Communication

    Disorders (NIDCD), approximately 17

percent of American adults experience some

level of hearing loss. Age and hearing loss

are strongly related -- 30 percent of seniors

from 65 to 74 years old suffer from a hearing

disability. For adults 75 years of age or older,

hearing loss jumps to 47 percent.

Taking the grandkids to the pool can turn

dangerous if grandma cant hear possible

cries for help. Fire alarms and smoke

detectors become useless when the kids are

napping and elderly grandparents cant hear

the warning. Driving puts the children at risk

if the grandparents cannot hear oncoming

    traffic or car horns.

The NIDCD reports that only one out of

every five people who needs a hearing aid

actually wears one. This is largely due to the

extravagant cost of most hearing aids.

I found that I saw too many patients with

hearing loss going home without a solution

because they couldnt afford hearing aid

prices, says Sreek Cherukuri, MD, a board-

certified ear, nose and throat physician based

    in Chicago, Ill.

    Cherukuris response was to develop

    inexpensive, but effective, hearing aids.

With todays technology, a quality hearing

aid shouldnt cost more than a digital camera

    or iPod, Cherukuri says.

    MDHearingAid, found at www.mdhearingaid.

com, isnt just a reliable source for the best

affordable hearing aids, its also a good

    source for expert consumer information.

You should see a physician and get the

best hearing aid you can afford. We offer an

excellent choice for those who cannot afford

a custom hearing aid, Cherukuri says.

Senior citizens should fully enjoy the benefits

of their ripe age, and not fear putting anyone

in danger. This includes plenty of quality time

    with grandchildren.

For more information on hearing aids,

    hearing loss or cost-efficient alternatives,

    visit MDHearingAid.com.

    INTERNET SAFETY 101: HOW TO

    PROTECT YOUR KIDS ONLINE

(NewsUSA) - It is no mystery that technology

allows kids to gain 24-hour access to the

media, but a recent study by the Kaiser

    Foundation discovered the average kid

spends 7.5 hours a day using entertainment

media. Through using multiple media at one

time such as music, TV, movies, the Internet,

video games and texting, kids can actually

pack a total of 10 hours and 45 minutes.

Although these ways of socializing and

communicating can be enriching, they do

come with certain risks. Kids can become

victims of online bullies, predators, hackers

    and scammers.

The Internet has great potential for kids in

terms of knowledge and resources, but we

take seriously the job of teaching our youth

how to navigate it safely and properly,

said Dan Rauzi, senior director, technology

programs at Boys & Girls Clubs of America

    (BGCA).

BGCA has partnered with Sprint to address

these issues and help better prepare

young people to navigate their world -- both

real and virtual. Sprints online resource,

    www.4NetSafety.com, offers free tools fro

experts that address the dangers that youn

    people commonly encounter online an

    encourages positive dialogue about Interne

    safety. In addition, www.myclubmylife.co

-- BGCAs website for teens -- includesspecial Media Safety section that has mor

    information and teen-friendly resources t

    further promote Internet safety.

Its important that your child be aware tha

the fundamentals -- what we say, how we sa

it, and why we say it -- are the same onlin

and off. Here are some tips for discussin

    Internet safety with your family:

Create an honest, open environment. Kid

look to their parents to help guide them. Yo

may not have all the answers, and bein

honest about that can go a long way.

Initiate conversations. Even if your kids ar

comfortable approaching you, dont wait fo

them to start the conversation. Use everyda

opportunities to talk to your kids about bein

    online.

Communicate your values. Be upfront abou

your values and how they apply in an onlin

    context. Communicating your values clearl

can help your kids make smarter and mor

thoughtful decisions when they face trick

    situations.

Be patient. Most kids need to hear informatio

repeated, in small doses, for it to sink in. I

you keep talking with your kids, your patienc

and persistence will pay off in the long run.
