    JERKY FOR THE TROOPS TO

    HOST FREE MASS MAILING

    TUESDAY

    From Staff Reports

BIG RAPIDS From noon to 2 p.m. onTuesday, the public is encouraged to cometo CKs Place to send jerky and other itemsto soldiers around the globe for free.In all, about 300 pounds of donated jerkywill be placed into care packages, whichwill be sent to soldiers any military branch,

anywhere in the world. All thats asked ofparticipants is that they bring the address oftheir loved one.CKs Place is located at 11515 NorthlandDrive in Big Rapids.

We plan on doing the jerky for as long asthe need is there, said CKs owner ColinKelly, who is now operating the Jerky for theTroops effort. Typically we have a certaininfantry group or company (to which the jerkyis sent). This particular year, at this particulartime, we do not have one of those groupsassigned (to receive) the jerky.About 75 boxes will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Cadets from FerrisState Universitys ROTC will be on-handto help people correctly label and ship theircare packages. These are cadets that are looking to befuture soldiers that may end up going towar, said Maj. Chuck Bron of Ferris ROTC.Were sort of paying it forward, hopingsomebody will do this for us in the future.Bron also noted that it was rare thatsomebody like Kelly would collect thedonations and then handle the shipping.Kelly, also the owner of Kellys DeerProcessing, said his businesses make nomoney from the effort its conducted purelyas a volunteer effort. The event wouldnt bepossible without the monetary donations, which pays for mailing costs as well as thecooking, processing and packaging the jerkyby a company in Falmouth.Donations arent necessary to send apackage, he said, but they are appreciated.Jerky for the Troops started with Kellydonating 10 pounds of jerky to a single

infantry unit. More than four years later, theproject has grown a lot. Jerky for soldiersis sold at military discounts seven days aweek, year-round.What helps make Jerky for the Troops worthit, Kelly said, is getting phone calls fromappreciative soldiers who want to ordermore.Hes calling me up, saying, My buddies justgot a box of that jerky, and we ate it all up;I need to replace it, Kelly said. The nextday, Im scrambling around, putting togethera box of jerky for him and sending it. A monthlater, I get another phone call. For more information, contact Kelly at (231)796-5414.

    PREPAID COLLEGE TUITION THE IT

    GIFT THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

(NewsUSA) - This holiday season, contributing to a childs college educationcan be the gift that lasts a lifetime. Parentsand grandparents alike want to give theirchildren and grandchildren the tools to

succeed in life, and a college education cando just that.

However, post-secondary education isbecoming increasingly less affordable.

According to the College Board, todaysnewborn is expected to pay $180,000 toattend a four-year, public university. Coupledwith the difficult economy, college is slippingbeyond reach of many families. However,by giving a College Illinois! Prepaid TuitionProgram contract to a child or grandchild, you lock in a price for their future educationtoday, staying a step ahead of tuitioninflation.

The price of college for one child is steep, and we have five to worry about, said Cindy

Wisniewski of Naperville, Ill., a CollegIllinois! Prepaid Tuition Program contracholder.

College Illinois! lets us save for collegfor our kids over time in a way that makesense financially for us.

Wisniewski said the flexible benefits anarray of payment options attracted her to thprogram.

Each of our children can choose to attenjust about any school they want, she saidWe love being able to give them this uniquopportunity to build their future.

A college education is a gift that will nevego out of style, and the holiday season letpurchasers take advantage of tax benefitbefore year-end.

To give a prepaid tuition contract to a child Andrew Davis, executive director of thIllinois Student Assistance Commission

the agency that administers the CollegIllinois! Prepaid Tuition Program, suggestcombining it with another gift such aspiggy bank to help a child gain a betteunderstanding of money.

A childrens book such as The PennPot would be an appropriate gift for younreaders, said Davis, a contract holdehimself. For older children, Money Sensfor Kids might be a good choice.

Clearly, consumers can have their maintenance done by their local
