VOLUNTEER STREAM

MONITORING GRANTSAVAILABLE

The Department of Natural Resourcesand Environment (DNRE) and the GreatLakes Commission today announced therelease of two grant application packagesfor volunteer stream monitoring in Michigan-- the Volunteer Stream Monitoring GrantProgram and the Volunteer StreamMonitoring Start-Up Grant Program.Both grant programs are offered under theMichigan Clean Water Corps (MiCorps), anetwork of volunteer monitoring programsin Michigan. Up to a total of $50,000 is

available this year to fund these grantprograms. Local units of government andnonprofit organizations are eligible to receivegrant funding.

The Volunteer Stream Monitoring GrantProgram provides grants for volunteergroups to monitor benthic macroinvertebratecommunities and habitat characteristics inwadeable streams and rivers. The grantsprovide training and support to collect waterquality data to support the DNREs and localefforts to protect and manage the stateswater resources. The grants may be usedto fund a local monitoring coordinator and/orpurchase water quality monitoring supplies.

The Volunteer Stream Monitoring Start-UpGrant Program provides funding for newlyforming volunteer monitoring groups toassist with designing a monitoring programand strategy for their community, and aid inthe development of a full proposal for the2012 Volunteer Stream Monitoring GrantProgram. Start-up grant recipients will haveaccess to MiCorps resources and training.Up to $10,000 will be available for start-upgrants, with multiple grants expected in the$1,000 to $3,000 range.Now in its seventh year, the MiCorpsProgram was established to assist the DNREin collecting and sharing water quality data

for use in water resources management andprotection programs. MiCorps has awardednearly $295,000 in grant funds to volunteerorganizations to assist in water qualityssessments, protection, and stewardshipf lakes and rivers. BIG RAPIDS Area hunters will cheerfor the biggest bucks shot during the 2010hunting season at a dinner in their honor.The Pioneers annual Big Buck Dinner is 6p.m. on Monday at CKs Place, located at11515 Northland Dr. in Big Rapids. Horsdoeuvres will be served at 6 p.m., with avenison and pork dinner served an hourlater.Tickets to the dinner will be available untilnoon on Monday at the Pioneer office for$18. Tickets will not be available for purchaseat the door.All are hunters, sportsmen and sportswomenare welcome to attend.We thank Colin Kelly and his staff forhelping us with this event, said Dave Clark,

Pioneer editor-in-chief. BIG RAPIDS From noon to 2 p.m. onTuesday, the public is encouraged to cometo CKs Place to send jerky and other itemsto soldiers around the globe for free.In all, about 300 pounds of donated jerkywill be placed into care packages, whichwill be sent to soldiers any military branch,

anywhere in the world. All thats asked ofparticipants is that they bring the address oftheir loved one.CKs Place is located at 11515 NorthlandDrive in Big Rapids.

We plan on doing the jerky for as long asthe need is there, said CKs owner ColinKelly, who is now operating the Jerky for theTroops effort. Typically we have a certaininfantry group or company (to which the jerkyis sent). This particular year, at this particulartime, we do not have one of those groupsassigned (to receive) the jerky.About 75 boxes will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Cadets from FerrisState Universitys ROTC will be on-handto help people correctly label and ship theircare packages.These are cadets that are looking to befuture soldiers that may end up going towar, said Maj. Chuck Bron of Ferris ROTC.Were sort of paying it forward, hopingsomebody will do this for us in the future.Bron also noted that it was rare thatsomebody like Kelly would collect thedonations and then handle the shipping.Kelly, also the owner of Kellys DeerProcessing, said his businesses make nomoney from the effort its conducted purelyas a volunteer effort. The event wouldnt bepossible without the monetary donations,which pays for mailing costs as well as thecooking, processing and packaging the jerkyby a company in Falmouth.Donations arent necessary to send apackage, he said, but they are appreciated.Jerky for the Troops started with Kellydonating 10 pounds of jerky to a single

infantry unit. More than four years later, theproject has grown a lot. Jerky for soldiersis sold at military discounts seven days aweek, year-round.What helps make Jerky for the Troops worthit, Kelly said, is getting phone calls fromappreciative soldiers who want to ordermore.Hes calling me up, saying, My buddies justgot a box of that jerky, and we ate it all up;I need to replace it, Kelly said. The Department of Natural Resources andEnvironment (DNRE) and the Great LakesCommission (GLC) announced today therelease of the 2011 grant application packagefor Michigans Volunteer River, Stream, andCreek Cleanup Program (VRSCCP).

A total of $25,000 is available under theprogram for fiscal year 2011, with funding

provided by the DNRE through fees collectedfrom the sale of the states water qualityprotection license plates. The applicationdeadline for the Volunteer River, Stream,and Creek Cleanup Program is 5 p.m. onMonday, Feb. 14, 2011.

The Michigan VRSCCP provides smallgrants to local units of government tohelp clean up and improve Michigansrivers, streams, and creeks. Local unitsof government may partner with nonprofitorganizations or other volunteer groups tocarry out the cleanups. There is a minimumlocal match requirement of 25 percent of thetotal project costs.

The Grant Application Package is availableat www.glc.org/streamclean/app11.Applications will be reviewed and assessed

by the DNRE and the GLC staff, with finaldecisions anticipated by late April 2011.

The Ginsberg Center has becomepowerful vehicle for integrating service-

learning into curricula across the U-Mcampus. Checkoway initiated workshopswhere faculty could learn how to teach usingservice-learning, and working groups wherfaculty could share the challenges theyfaced and the solutions they discovered insuch teaching. In the process, he elevatedcampus civic engagement above the levelof the day-to-day to incorporate excitingideas and new ways of thinking.

Initiatives begun by Checkoway havincluded: National Community ScholarsProgram, Youth Dialogues on Race andEthnicity in Metropolitan Detroit, MichiganNeighborhood AmeriCorps Program,Michigan Community Service Corps,

He coordinates the oldest andlargest Community Organization degreeprogram in graduate education, involvingmore than 100 students annually in coursesand internships nationwide.
