IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Approved Venues

In addition to Registration Offices there are a number of other venues in Cornwall which have

been licensed by Cornwall Council Registration Service for the conduct of civil ceremonies.

Current legislation allows approved venues to hold civil marriage ceremonies and civil

partnership registrations as well as other civil ceremonies such as naming ceremonies and

renewal of civil marriage vows. These ceremonies are conducted by the Council’s Registration

Service Registration Officers.

Ceremonies at Approved Venues

A civil ceremony contracted in an Approved Building (e.g. hotel, stately home etc.) is only

lawful if the building has been granted a licence by the local authority.

Licences are valid for three years and the venue will be required to renew the licence at least 6

months before the current licence expires.

Ceremonies may also only take place within a venue in rooms/areas specifically approved by

the licensing authority.

Venues suitable for approval

The venue must be a permanent and easily identifiable structure which has no recent or

ongoing religious connection. Marquees are not appropriate as they are not permanent

structures. Some outdoor structures may be considered but are subject to a formal inspection

and approval process.

New Venues – Giving Notice

When a licence application for a new venue is being processed, couples can provisionally book

their ceremony date with the registration officer and the venue.

However, couples cannot make an appointment to give notice until the licence has been

granted. Further guidance can be sought from the registration officer.

Booking a civil ceremony in an Approved Venue

Couples can provisionally book the date for their ceremony with a venue but before they

finalise the booking they must contact the Registration Manager at the Registration Office

responsible for the area in which the venue is located, in order to make a provisional booking

for a Registration Officer to attend.

To check a registration officer’s availability to attend, couples can contact the appropriate

Registration Office by calling the Registration Information Centre on 0300 1234 181.

Licence Renewal

It is recommended that venues renew their licence at least 6 months before their current

licence is due to expire. If there is any break between the expiry of the existing licence and the

start of the new licence, the venue will not be approved for ceremonies during that period.

As couples can book far in advance of their ceremony date it can often be the case that the

current licence is due for renewal in the period between giving notice and the ceremony date.

This need not be a problem as long as the venue renews the licence in time for the ceremony.

For peace of mind, it is recommended that, along with the licensing authority, the couple also

keep in regular contact with the venue to ensure that the venue has a valid licence in place on

the day of the ceremony.
