2018 ANNUAL REPORT | 1

Tidewell Hospice is entering an exciting new era.

It is my pleasure to introduce myself as the new President and CEO of Tidewell Hospice and thank you, our generous donors, for helping us achieve an outstanding Fiscal Year 2018.

Like you, I have a deep connection to the Tidewell mission and the vital care that we provide for the patients, families and their loved ones in of our communities. Though I am a former Tidewell Board of Trustees member, I have been struck as I become even more immersed in the Tidewell organization by how much we offer our patients and loved ones beyond unparalleled end-of-life medical care. Tidewell is truly more than you think:

• Our Complementary Services teams deliver quality-of-life programs such as massage, music and art therapies as well as visits from our therapy pets.

• The Tidewell Wishes and Humanitarian Fund provides special celebrations like a final flight for a pilot or an evening out with a spouse. This fund also assists families with basic needs, such as turning on the electricity.

• Tidewell’s Grief Education and Support Center offers free counseling sessions to anyone in our communities who has suffered a loss, whether or not there is a prior relationship with Tidewell.

• Club Blue Butterfly, Tidewell’s new grief center for children and teens, gives families the tools they need to confront the challenges unique to grieving youth.

These programs are just a few examples of what makes Tidewell a special place. Each is funded by our donors and powered by volunteers and our dedicated colleagues. Donor support of our mission is so very important. And it is deeply appreciated.

But there is much more to come. Tidewell is just a part, though still a vital part, of a larger continuum of care we are offering patients through what we’re calling the last third of life. Our parent company, Stratum Health System, is leading the way by offering home health care services through affiliate companies Approved Home Health and Avidity Home Health as well as home-based physician services through Connexis Medical Services.

We are confident that Tidewell’s reputation as a healthcare leader and community asset will strengthen Stratum Health System and, in turn, Stratum will extend Tidewell’s ability to serve patients who need our care.

Thanks to you, it is, indeed, an exciting time for Tidewell Hospice.

Let’s continue to change healthcare for the better, one patient, one family at a time.

JonathanAFleeceJonathan Fleece, President and CEO

Tidewell EndowmentA robust endowment should be an essential component of any non-profit organization’s financial plan. Just as individuals save for the future and prepare for unforeseen economic conditions, Tidewell Hospice is building its nest egg in order to ensure its ability to provide high-quality end-of-life services for generations. With a strong endowment, Tidewell is able to offset the increasing costs of providing care amid decreasing reimbursements. Endowment gifts also help sustain ancillary services such as grief support, veterans’ programs, complementary and children’s services, which receive no direct funding from Medicare or Medicaid. Tidewell’s Legacy Fund is a designated pool of assets held and invested to provide long-term growth and dividends. The principal of the endowment is invested, and a portion of the interest earned can be made available for discretionary use by Tidewell’s Board of Trustees. Donors can designate funds for a specific purpose or request that support be directed where need is the greatest. Creating a named fund with a minimum investment of $50,000 through a donation of cash, securities or a bequest in a will is one way to recognize your legacy or a loved one while providing financial support to Tidewell. To learn more about the Tidewell endowment program, contact Denise Pope at (941) 552-7658 or [email protected].

9th Annual Tidewell Signature LuncheonWill Reeve, the keynote speaker at the 9th Annual Tidewell Signature Luncheon, said people often ask him how he coped with the loss of his parents, “Superman” actor Christopher Reeve and activist Dana Reeve. They passed away within 16 months of each other by the time Will was 13. Will, 25 and an ESPN broadcaster, sees his life differently, appreciating his good fortune and being thankful for the support system of family, friends and counselors. “My parents often said that you have to give more than you take and that’s something that I have taken with me for a very long time,” Reeve said. “No matter what, if you’re giving back more than you’re taking from the world in whatever context, you’re doing the right thing and contributing positively to society.” About 800 community leaders and hospice supporters attended the Signature Luncheon on Feb. 9, 2018, at The Ritz-Carlton in Sarasota.

Club Blue ButterflyClub Blue Butterfly, Tidewell’s grief support center for young people ages 5-18 who have lost a significant person in their lives, has grown quickly since it began in April 2018. Seventy-nine families participated in the peer support program during the past year. Tidewell grief specialists and trained volunteers facilitate Club Blue Butterfly’s support groups to offer children and teens the support they need to begin to heal. Children and teens grieve, but their grief reactions are different from those of adults. They may be sad or crying one minute and happily playing the next. Violeta Velazquez attends Club Blue Butterfly with her sons Zebastian, 14, and Zergio, 8. The boys lost their father, Tony Rodriguez, in September 2018. “I didn’t know how to help them,” Velazquez said. “It has helped us move forward. It’s very nonthreatening. It’s like a safe haven place for them with kids their age. Everyone is in the same situation.” Thanks to the generosity of donors, Club Blue Butterfly is free for families. If you know a young person who could benefit from Club Blue Butterfly’s services, visit tidewellhospice.org/bluebutterfly to fill out a contact form or contact Danielle Visone, MSW, LCSW, at 941-552-7576 or [email protected].

PARO therapy robotIn spring 2018, Tidewell became home to Harper, our very own interactive robotic seal or PARO, thanks to the generosity of the J. Milton and Nellie E. Hoffa Memorial Foundation. Harper represents an innovative approach to dementia therapy. She responds to light, sound and touch with special antimicrobial fur. Harper has helped bring joy and positivity to Tidewell patients suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia by reducing hallucinations, improving mood, increasing verbalization and de-escalating anger. Additionally, patient family and friends have found Harper to be a helpful tool in bringing peace and comfort during a particularly difficult situation. Tidewell social workers had so much success with Harper that our volunteers contributed their fundraising efforts toward purchasing a second PARO so that more patients and loved ones can experience the benefits.
