ANNUAL REPORT 2020

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR AND PRESIDENT/CEOPatience, proactive, partnerships. These words provide a glimpse into Hospice Giving Foundation in 2020. It was the year we discovered the power of resilience and timely responses to human needs, the impact of honoring differences, and found inspiration in partnerships steeped in support and compassion. Together with our community, we stayed true to our commitment to caring, giving, together.

Proactive response to COVID-19 included Emergency Grant Funding to support people with increasingly dire needs and serious illness. Resolved to bring our community comprehensive information and assistance, we shifted in-person workshops to virtual and expanded online resources, in both English and Spanish. Partnerships grew as we hosted professional collaboratives such as Juntos con Esperanza (Latino Outreach), the Monterey County Palliative Care Collaborative, and a weekly ‘Support and Information Sharing’ with local skilled nursing facilities.

Facing death like we could have never expected, last year tested everyone’s hope. We found hope working as a community and practicing the art of patience. Despite the tragedies, losses, and grief, we saw hope blossom when needs were heard, and thoughtfulness and compassion led the way.

Since March of 2020, we granted $148,092 in emergency funding, which, when combined with our annual grant funding, totals $747,265 invested in end-of-life care and services.

All this happens because of your generosity and your dedication. You make this work possible for our community, and we thank you.

FINDING HOPE + SUPPORTING NEEDS

LAUNCHING In mid-January 2020 HG Foundation launched HOPEGives, a movement to help change attitudes about death and promote understanding and acceptance. The day-long event held at Hidden Valley Music Seminars featured resource and conversation tables, an earth-altar workshop with Day Schildkret, and a reception with guest Congressman Jimmy Panetta. JOINING WITH OUR COMMUNITY TO MEET THE NEEDS, BE PREPARED, AND SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER

2020 grants supported a broad scope of end-of-life services for both adults and children facing serious illness. In addition, emergency grants helped local organizations provide practical and emotional support to families facing serious illness and end of life, compounded by the complexities of the pandemic. Funding was used for personal protective equipment, food, rent, transportation, and communication tools, as well as for grief and spiritual care, respite care, and support for burial costs.
