As we approach the end of the year, I want to take a moment and say thank you to all of you for your invaluable support this year. ULI has accomplished a great deal in 2014, and as Governors of the Foundation, your philanthropy has made so much of it possible. We are informing local decision making through our support of Advisory Services programs; we are sharing best practice through our support of original market research; and we are educating tomorrow’s decision makers through our support of student and Young Leader scholarship programs. What is most inspiring about the Foundation’s support of these and other initiatives is that it is more than financial. It’s about getting involved: Marty Burger presenting the story of the World Trade Center redevelopment to students at the Fall Meeting; Tom Toomey chairing the Urban Innovation Grants committee, which awarded $260,000 to ULI district councils; Joe Azrack leading the Hurricane Sandy response task force. These are just a few examples of Foundation Governors demonstrating philanthropy at ULI. Please let me know how you want to become involved in 2015. Thank you again for all your support this year.

Sincerely,

Geoffrey L. Stack Chairman, ULI Foundation Managing Director, SARES-REGIS Group

Letter from the Chair

UrbanPlan, ULI’s long-running program designed to educate high school and university students about development and land use practice, has been introduced in the United Kingdom. In partnership with the IPF Educational Trust, UrbanPlan UK will target “A” level students studying geography and business studies in three state schools and will be delivered through a series of workshops by property and teaching professionals. The objective is to bring the property industry to life in a way that is compelling for young people and relevant to the ‘‘A” level syllabus, and to encourage more young people from all walks of life to consider property careers. Support for UrbanPlan UK is provided by the ULI Charitable Trust.

UrbanPlan Expands to Europe

For nearly 80 years, ULI has been working to advance best practice in the creation of great places. These efforts have inspired countless contributions of time, expertise, and resources from the many members of ULI who have embraced the opportunity to give back. The results of these contributions have been seen throughout ULI’s history in the development and design of cities and communities around the world. Members of the ULI Foundation’s Legacy Circle are enabling the long tradition of responsible development practice and land use decision making to influence the shape of great places for decades to come. The Legacy Circle program allows individuals to make estate and planned giving pledges of any amount, both revocable and irrevocable, to the ULI Foundation for future use. Gifts can be designated for specific uses or for general support. For more information on the ULI Foundation’s Legacy Circle, please contact David Howard at [email protected].

Fifteen women received scholarships through the Annual Fund’s Women’s Leadership Initiative scholarship program.

Wells Fargo provided a corporate gift to allow 25 students to attend the Fall Meeting.

The Foundation’s Annual Fund provided scholarships for 100 public sector officials to attend the Fall Meeting.

Through the support of many Governors and other generous donors, the ULI Foundation is able to provide important opportunities for students and young professionals in the real estate and land use industry to attend the ULI Fall Meeting and learn firsthand about responsible development practice and decision making. Here are a few examples from this year’s Fall Meeting in New York:

Foundation Governor Marty Burger hosted a presentation for 65 student scholarship recipients on development of the World Trade Center site, held on the 54th floor of 4 World Trade Center.

In MemoriamUrban Innovation Grant Delivering Impact Ten Years LaterIn 2004, ULI Minnesota was awarded a $25,000 grant from the ULI Foundation Annual Fund to launch a program to spur regional dialogue and collaboration among local mayors and the private sector to help solve pressing land use challenges. This grant, awarded as part of the Foundation’s Community Action Grant program (now known as the Urban Innovation Grant program), enabled ULI Minnesota to found the Regional Council of Mayors, which has grown over the past ten years to become a vital resource for public and private sector decision makers to engage on issues ranging from housing to transportation to regional competitiveness. From an original group of eight participating cities and towns, the program has grown to include mayors from 54 municipalities throughout the region. For their efforts, ULI Minnesota was recently awarded the ULI Impact Award, given annually to a district or national council that has catalyzed an exceptional example of impact or change in the design and development of its community.

Kenneth Hughes, a ULI Foundation Governor and former ULI Trustee, died November 29 in Dallas, after a brief illness. Hughes was a Dallas-based real estate developer whose signature and pioneering project, Mockingbird Station, was the first transit-oriented development in Texas. Hughes was known widely as a retail innovator and expert, and he shared his expertise widely within ULI. After joining ULI in 1973, Hughes served on various councils, juries, and panels in the decades that followed. He joined the Community Redevelopment Council in 1979, chairing CRC Gold from 1989 to 1990. Hughes was also a member of the Urban Development Mixed-Use Council (Purple Flight) from 2009 to 2011. Hughes served on the Hines Competition jury in 2004, on the Global Awards for Excellence/Urban Open Space Jury from 2010 to 2012, and as an Advisory Services panel member. Hughes graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1967 and began his career in Dallas with the Henry S. Miller Company. He also attended the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture and served on the school’s advisory council. Hughes was a guest lecturer on urban housing and mixed-use development with the Real Estate Academic Initiative at Harvard University. Charity Navigator, a leading independent advisory firm for institutional and individual donors to charities and nonprofits, recently awarded the ULI Foundation its highest rating. Of the more than 7,600 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations evaluated by Charity Navigator, only 25 percent have received a four-star rating. Charity Navigator’s ratings are used by donors to show how efficiently a nonprofit organization will use its support today, how well it has sustained its programs and services over time, and its level of commitment to good governance, best practices, and openness with information.
