The Board of Trustees meets ten times a year to direct the management and governance of the Hospice. This includes reviews of the Hospice policies and protocols, developments to services, finances and fundraising. The day to day management of the hospice is delegated to the Hospice Chief Executive and his Hospice Management Team.

Here in St Davids we endeavour to provide the best possible care for our patients and families. Our passion for excellence is led by our highly skilled clinical team and supported by our wonderful army of volunteers, fundraisers and administrative staff who all share our ideals.

This year, an exciting and hugely important decision was made to expand the hospice accommodation to provide all single rooms facilities for all of our patients and families, increasing our bed provision from 11 to 14. This will allow us to provide the extra privacy and dignity, which is an essential and professional aspect of our care.

We sincerely thank all of our supporters for their help in raising the £1.7 million needed annually to keep our clinical services on-going. We are enormously aware that in the increasing climate of austerity, that fundraising is difficult and that contributions are reduced, but we are driven by our patients’ needs and it is wonderful to see that our community respects this challenge and has responded well.

Our hospice shops, lottery and fundraising team have continued to provide a steady income and

vital contribution to our funds. We rely enormously on the dedicated volunteers who supply the crucial support in delivering these services.Without this input our costs would have been prohibitive and we are proud to have such a loyalty in our teams.

We are very fortunate to have the support of our community in providing our services but the future will continue to present challenges in maintaining the income stream needed to sustain this high level of care. We will continue to seek the opportunities to expand our fundraising and I am confident that with the help of all our supporters we shall succeed.

The Board of Trustees wish to extend their thanks to all of the staff for meeting the challenge of delivering highly specialist care whilst building work is in progress.

Mrs Gladys Harrison Chairman

Holding On To Individuality Alex met Robin later on in life, both families had flown the nest and they found love. Both active, they enjoyed walking, travelling and eating out.

Robin who was always full of life, started to act very out of character. Alex knew something was wrong. Robin was diagnosed with a brain tumour. After many visits and operations at Walton Hospital, the time came when it was no longer treatable. Philosophical about his illness, Robin didn’t want to waste his energy worrying. He tried leading a “normal” life, with Alex caring at home.

Alex says, “I was overwhelmed by the support network of specialists which clicked into place. i.e. visits from the occupational therapist and Macmillan nurse and a referral to the Day Care Unit at St David’s Hospice.” Day Care sessions provided Robin with the medical advice to understand and Alex with ‘time out’ through reflexology and massage.

The illness’ unpredictability came with difficulties requiring specialist care. An opportunity arose for Robin to be admitted into Inpatients for a week’s respite care, providing Alex with time to recuperate.

He continued to decline, beyond the type of care Alex could provide at home. At this point Robin agreed to stay. Alex was glad to have the support of the Hospice staff. She felt part of the Hospice care team and was included in discussions with the specialists.

Alex said, “I was able to spend all day there, continuing to care for him with the nursing support. Little things mean a lot - I chose his food, fed him and helped with personal hygiene.”

“St David’s provides the finest care. Robin was ‘big and generous in every way’, they allowed ‘Robin to be Robin’. People keep hold of their individuality right to the end.”

Sadly, Robin passed away. Alex continues to receive bereavement counselling at the Hospice and her son completed a sponsored cycle around Wales in Robin’s memory.

Eleanor Rees from Llandudno tells us of her personal experience of St David’s Hospice end of life care.

With a little gentle encouragement, my husband David went for his first visit to St David’s Hospice. David was diagnosed with bowel cancer and secondary tumours in the liver and like many other people he was very reticent to the idea. He would go on a weekly basis and used to look forward to the visits. He came home having been pampered with reflexology, aromatherapy, and physiotherapy and by the most caring, loving nursing staff one could meet.

At a later stage, David deteriorated and had to be admitted to the Inpatient Unit. Times like these are very traumatic, neither of my daughters had any experience of what a Hospice did. They were both moved by the outstanding love and care their father received. The care received also applied to us, our emotions were all over the place, but the nursing staff were there for us too, be it for a hug, a cup of tea or a chat.

Every patient and family member is treated with such dignity. Sadly my husband died, but the Hospice doesn’t forget you. After all the pain and upset of the funeral, the Hospice got in touch and asked me to visit the day unit. They looked after me for 12 months providing counselling, aromatherapy and reflexology, all of which was free of charge.

You will never feel alone whilst in St David’s Hospice, there will always be someone there to hold your hand, offer you a cup of tea and always welcome you with a smile.

There Will Always Be Someone There

Income Generation The Hospice received £442,000 from the Local Health Board and Welsh Government, enough money to fund the work of the Hospice for 92 days. The remaining 273 days were funded through the work of the Income Generation team, legacies, donations and gifts. In 2011, it cost £4795 a day to pay for the clinical running costs at the Hospice.

LOTTery2011 saw a number of new initiatives for the Lottery Department including the second playing number campaign and the introduction of the rollover jackpot.

fUnDrAISInG For 2011, the Hospice initiated a number of new fundraising events and these, combined with the restructuring of Fundraising Team enabled total fundraised income to increase to £281,070. Given the economic climate the Management Team constantly worked on the challenge of finding new ways to generate income.

SHOPS Income from our Hospice shops is a major revenue source for our charity. During 2011, two new shops opened (Beaumaris and Bangor) but had to close one (Llangefni). The opening of the two new shops along with the hard work of the shop staff and volunteers, enabled our shop income to increase by 8.14% to £535,016.

THAnk yOU: In 2011 • Over £158,000 was spent on clothes, £19,000 on handbags and shoes and £16,000 on books at our Hospice Shops!• 298 ladies woke in the early hours to take part in the Dawn Walk raising over £21,000• 310 danced at the Hospice Christmas Ball raising £16,000• Over 480 mobile phones were donated to be recycled• Over 1500 chuckled at the first ever Giddy Goat Comedy Festival raising £17,000. • 12,000 Hospice Lottery players raised £407,308.• 83,770 Lottery Summer and Christmas Superdraw tickets were bought

St David’s Hospice could not continue to serve the community without the support and dedication of our volunteers that give of their time each year to help keep our services running. Without the commitment and professionalism of these individuals, the Hospice would not be able to function.

Volunteers at St David’s Hospice outnumber paid workers by almost four to one and, in monetary terms, save the Hospice around £250,000 each year in salaries.

We continue to attract volunteers from the age of 15 years to 88 years and in 2011, we had 29 new starters, taking our total to 280 across all areas. 23 of these volunteers have been donating their time on a regular basis for over 10 years.

We would like to take this opportunity to say “Thank You” to all our volunteers. You are a vital part of the team that makes St David’s Hospice what it is today.

Dilys Roberts, from Deganwy volunteers, once a fortnight, as a receptionist at St David’s Hospice. Her day can vary greatly; from answering the phone and greeting the visitors, to handling money from the shop and café and assisting with other departmental admin tasks.

She started in 2009, after one morning she went for a coffee at Café Dewi (the hospice café) saw the receptionist and thought ‘I can do that’. She completed her application form and she has never looked back.

Dilys says, “I look forward to coming - I love it! I really enjoy meeting and chatting to people. I feel that I am helping in some small way. I enjoy being part of the team, working with the younger people helps to keep me young and up to date!”

enthusiasm and Passion - The year Ahead Commencing in the Winter 2011, we embarked on a project to enhance the end of life care provided in our adult Hospice. The ‘Helping Hands’ capital appeal has allowed us to convert six of our existing beds into single bedroom accommodation and build an extra three bedrooms (making the total of 14 single bedrooms).

Through listening to the views of patients, relatives and clinical staff we have established that, while feedback is very positive regarding the care provided, an increased number of single rooms and private spaces would better accommodate their needs. This would improve the privacy for the families at a very difficult time.

Thanks to the support of the local community, the development is now in its advanced stages, a Hospice everyone can be proud of and where our holistic care can be further enhanced. This could not have been achieved without the continued enthusiasm and passion from the people of North West Wales.

St David’s Hospice is a specialist palliative centre and it continues to play a vital role in the community of Conwy, Gwynedd and Anglesey. With the additional three bedrooms, the annual clinical running costs will rise to £1.9 million. This will be in addition to the £120,000 needed to help towards the furnishing and equipping of our new bedrooms and relatives accommodation. We receive 25% of our patient care costs from the Welsh Government and Local Health Board, therefore the majority comes from fundraising and other voluntary donations. The year ahead will be a very busy one in terms of income generation, especially in view of the economic climate.

Together, we can provide a care environment that will give our patients the dignity and comfort they deserve.

Alun Davies, Chief executive

It is inspiring to see so many ways that individuals, businesses, and community organisations come together and support their local adult hospice. As a local charity for local people we could not deliver the care we provide without the dedication and fantastic support of our local communities of Conwy, Gwynedd and Anglesey.
