Page 17: Alltermag issue 08

The Internet of Things (IoT, sometimes Internet of Everything) is the network of physical objects or “things” embedded with electronics, software, sensors and con-nectivity to enable it to achieve greater value and service by exchanging data with the manufacturer, operator and/or other connected devices based on the infrastructure of International Telecommunication Union’s Global Standards Initiative. Internet of Things connect physically and remotely by individuals, for both public sector and private sector, in the sense of a computer network grid, of a created electrical device that is in place, with economic benefit and potential usefulness. Each thing is unique-ly identifiable through its embedded computing system but is able to interoperate within the existing Internet infrastructure. Experts estimate that the IoT will consist of almost 50 billion objects by 2020.

Hot topic: 7 really weird tHings in tHe internet of tHings

Definitely IoT is the future, but as in all promising sectors, there are ideas that haven’t been thought even from the writers of the wildest fiction movies.

Jerseys that ‘feel what the players feel’

In March, a company called Wearable Experiments introduced the Alert Shirt, which somehow monitors activity during Australian-rules football games on television and vibrates when the players on the field are tackled. The idea is that those wearing the shirt will be able to feel a game while they watch it.

Home beer brewing system

An aptly named company called Inebriated Innovations has devel-oped a Wi-Fi-enabled temperature control system for home beer brewing operations, according to a report at Postscapes. Temper-ature probes connected to a Wi-Fi module monitor temperature, and a mobile app allows the user to control heating and cooling devices remotely. The developers came up with the system after finding that better control over temperature during fermentation yielded a better beer.

Dog treat dispenser with video chat

For those who travel a lot but don’t want to go without giving their dog a treat every day, the iCPooch is a video chat device that is controlled remotely and dispenses dog treats. The device was invented by a 14-year-old girl who wanted a better way to give her dog attention while her family was out of the house, and raised more than $29,700 against its $20,000 funding goal on Kickstarter.

Dog fitness tracker

If you get carried away with the internet-connected treat dispenser, the Whistle dog fitness tracker can help monitor a dog’s physical activity. It’s sort of a Nike Fuelband for dogs that tracks and stores each dog’s daily activity, so owners can get a sense of how much exercise their dog is actually getting. The Whistle’s founders plan to aggregate all the data on the dogs wearing its devices to create a database that the veterinarians and researchers can access to spot trends in dogs’ health, Gigaom reported.

newcastle University: Bincam

The trash can that posts to Facebook

Newcastle University researchers conducted an experiment with the BinCam, to see how embedding a camera in per-sonal trash cans would affect recycling habits. The BinCam connects a smartphone to the underside of a trashcan lid, which automatically takes a photo every time the user puts something in it, according to PostScapes. The photos are automatically shared on Facebook, to garner scrutiny from Facebook Friends who would like to see the user recycle more, as well as with Amazon’s Mechanical Turk service. The latter sends the photos to a judge who assigns a score to the user based on how well they recycle.

HOT SHOT

Page 27: Alltermag issue 08

Nikolai Dimitrov

asere

Product Manager Strategic Accounts

Asere takes its name from the sacred Efik-language greeting of the Afro-Cuban Abakua religion, meaning literally, “I salute you.” Today, it is a common greeting among Cubans. Meaning friend, buddy, homie, dude, etc.

?Que bola, asere? “How’s it going, buddy?”

Nikolai Dimitrov is a Product Manager Strategic Accounts in Allterco. He has been in the company for 3 years, but his jokes and special humour are still enjoying the colleagues. He loves Cuba, women and constructor-models. Everybody calls him Asere.

Asere is a cool guy and a wonderful person.

It’s even more wonderful to listen to him while he is telling a story.

Page 28: Alltermag issue 08

Asere, you are a huge fan of constructor-models. How many have you con-structed so far and in general isn’t this a very sluggish and stressful job?

Sluggish, yes – but I wouldn’t say stressful. I even found it relaxing. Some people like to read books to be able to travel to a different reality – I do it with models – I enjoy fine-touching every detail until it’s completed and perfect.

Train models are my favourite models. My father was a harbour engineer and later man-aged to travel to places like Nicaragua, Cuba and Latin America, but before all this he was to become a high-ranking ship captain and so one day he came home with a model of a port. This was the first one that stuck in my mind.

In those years we had local stores like “Young Mechanic”, I was probably 6 years old and I have already managed to break a couple of models from this particular store. It was not until first grade when I started driving carting in the Pioneer castle, where they offered airplane and ship modelling classes, but I was not allowed to attend due to age restriction. Nevertheless the corridors in this building were filled with huge glass cases with all kinds of models, which I used to stare at all day.

Then I left for Cuba with my father and it was over. It was not until I started working with Mtel that my brother and I had some work to do on the ceiling of his house and

found two large bags. One with Lego models and one with train models. We managed to easily to come to a deal – I get the trains and he gets the Lego.

Then my childhood was reborn and is still alive to this day. Since then I have made very big models, but I had to dismantle them due to

lack of space. Now I have rare items like grass, telegraph poles, everything, but I am not able to build something big because of my

children and again lack of space.

01

Page 29: Alltermag issue 08

What do you dream of the most in modelling?

02

You have a thing for Star Wars...

I think it was in 1979 when my childhood was filled with Jedi, swords and everything that Star Wars presented, and I was lucky enough to be able to share this with my friends. I have a small ritual – every couple of years I watch the entire Star Wars series in a weekend. I still keep all the videotapes. Just a couple of months ago I managed to watch all Star Wars movies with my son and it was great. Oh and did I forget to mention that I own quite a load of Star Wars Lego constructors?.

03

Page 30: Alltermag issue 08

Asere, where does the nickname Asere come from?

After I came back from Cuba, in the beginning I did not go out with my old school mates. I only went out with other fellow Bulgarians that have come back before or after me from Cuba. Therefore, just as we like to use different slangs word like ‘dude’ or ‘bro’, ‘Asere’ translates to “dude” in Cuban. It is one of those words that you keep on repeating and never gets

old or inappropriate. I use to call Asere every-one, every time we go out and they called me Asere.

04

Tell us a little more about your warm and exotic childhood...

I went to Cuba in 1989 because my father told me he would buy me a cassette tape recorder if I went. At this point my parents had already divorced. So I left for Cuba, I imagined the place to be a big 8-lane boulevard; with a river full of

Coca Cola and somewhere on one side of this boulevard should be the most famous beach in Rio and on the other side – New York. What I saw was completely different and is difficult to explain – only someone that has visited the place can understand it – the old cars, ruined houses, huge families living in one small

bedroom and so on. Communism at its finest.

05

So what is the big deal about Cuba then?

If you stay for a little longer, you will love the place. It’s the freedom of thought – the unexpressed thought. The freedom you can have on the street without any control, beside the fact that every third man is working for the system/party. You are cruis-ing down the streets, having fun but if you decide to pull out a knife, you will find yourself in a police car 7 seconds later. If you do not want to find yourself in trouble, you need to stay away from the dark circles in the city however. Despite all that,

people are dancing everywhere, they are extremely passionate about it, which inevitably makes them radical. It is the system that is implementing this radicalism in the nation. When you leave this beautiful place you understand that it is like a time capsule – no influence from other countries, no rich and poor, there are only communist politicians and everyone else. Yes, Padre Juan may be a mob guy but he is also living on the street, he might be dealing drugs but you will never guess, because he is leading the same life as you. He is dressed the same way as you are; he is driving the same car as you are. He is, however, spending money outside the country, in a way that you

could not have guessed and most importantly, he is primarily spending them for influence.

Who are your favourite IT Specialists?

I do not have any favourites – like all people they are nice in their own particu-lar way. I tried to stay unbiased on who is the best Java developer, Web Designer or whatever. Everyone is good in a particular field and all together – they are the best team.

How did you end up working here after ages in Mtel?

Peter Delchev called me one Tuesday and said “Mitko wants to see you tomorrow.”

And the rest is history…

08

09

What do you like about Allterco?

First, we have only one captain. The captain can direct in only two directions at a time – with his left hand and with his right hand. When you have five captains with two hands each the situation is completely different, captains like to do dirty tricks to one another and confuse the crew.

Second, when you have a small team of let’s say no more than a hundred people, the environment is more intimate and friendly. You know everyone and everyone knows you; some of these people even are your friends. It’s harder for people to form groups or do dirty trick to one another.

Third and most important, in a small company like Teracomm which things still happen with voice commands. I realized that in the first 2 days of my arrival, when I started I instantly got security pass, e-mail address, computer, table, chair and a space in the office. If this were Mtel, it would have taken from 2 to 4 months for all of this to happen, with requests, letters, signed and stamped documents and so on. ISO is ISO and taking part in official auctions is profitable for a company and also gives a lot of advantages, but the more procedures we have to follow, the more stressful the work environment is becoming and inevitably the things go wrong more often. That being said, we must not forget that laziness and lack of responsibility and communication call for rules and platforms that one should follow in order to guarantee quality work environment. If we have the strength to do things on our own and have self-control and responsibility, we will not need to follow such systems.

07

Page 32: Alltermag issue 08

anniversary

Page 33: Alltermag issue 08

I have many, but one comes to my mind every time. In 2012 I was visiting Sofia, where I had a meeting with Mitko and Deni, in which I told them that we need to make

an award game in Macedonia with One, but we need to think of a different mechanism, it needed to be done differently from the other games. Therefore, we sat down with Mitko in his office and started to discuss different mechanisms but after a while we decided that we will first have lunch and continued the discussion afterwards. After we left his office I sat down and went through all the mechanisms that I considered to be the best. All of a sudden, Mitko comes up and said – “Tome, I think I have a working mechanism!” And so we sat down to discuss his idea, the mechanism he was telling me about was something that I have never heard of and it sounded really weird, but he got a calculator and said: ”Look – daily subscription is this much X that many users X the amount of days = this amount of money.”

I was staring at this simple calculation and I could not believe what I was seeing… I asked him “Are you sure that your calculations are correct?” as I knew that we couldn’t make such a calculation for so many users, and parallel with this I was thinking how we would manage to cover the expenses with this calculation.

We decided to go along with this mechanism and managed to create the game, I continued to have my doubts for the mechanism, as I am a practical person and don’t believe something incredible is going happen unless I see it with my own eyes. So, I started waiting

5 years at aLLterCO

What is the most interesting case that you had for the last 5 years?01

On June 29, 2015 Tome Hadzi-Vasilev, Head of the Macedonian office, had his 5th anniversary as part of the ALLTERCO team.

Here’s what he said for the past five-year period:

Page 34: Alltermag issue 08

for the first period of the game to finish and whether we will meet our target…

In the end, we completed with all financial reports, and I was surprised to see that we had hit our target and what’s more, we had exceeded it. Until this day I’m still pondering on Mitko’s words – “Tome, I think I have a working mechanism!”

I am hoping that one day the same thing will happen again, but I also know that Mitko is hoping for some of us to come with the same brilliant idea.

Do you reckon 5 years have gone fast?02

What do you expect to happen in the next 5 years?03

Yes, in a heartbeat. If I look back at these past 5 years – many things have happened, many things we have learned, many things we have created together as a team. Honestly, 5 years have gone so quickly with all those nice and positive co-workers of mine.

I expect only growth and expansion in positive ways. We all have seen how good Allterco has been going in the last couple of years, so I expected that we continue in this direction for as long as we can. I still remember a managers’ meeting, we were still in the old headquarters in Sofia 4 years ago when Mitko told us all: “How would you like if we go for 3 months this summer to work on a yacht and travel the world?”

Not surprisingly all of us immediately answered – YES – and then he said: “Make 10 million yearly profit for Allterco – buy the yacht and I promise you that we will work every summer for 3 years on a yacht.” I hope that we will achieve this some day!

In conclusion - when you are sitting on your desk working, always listen to cheerful songs, smile always and whenever you feel like you had enough – come to Macedonia for a vacation.

nirmala MuruganCustomer Support

Before joining Allterco, Nirmala’s humble beginnings took place in a company called iTel Mobile sdn bhd. A technology support firm focused on sim card queries and issues for Maxis.

She started as a Customer Service Executive, and was promoted to Team Leader two years later. The adventure gave her wonderful lessons on professional ethics and interpersonal skills. Besides developing her professional qualities, Nirmala also progressed further in understanding the technical aspects of the telecom industry.

The journey was fun and eventful but the next stage awaits her and that begins in Allerco.

The positive vibes which live within the people in this office was very evident the very first day I stepped into this firm as an interview candidate. All-terco provides me the platform to expand my skills and achieve my career goals. I am very confident that beyond learning technical lessons from my fellow colleagues I would also be able to establish a very good relationship with everyone in this office.
