Hello Corvette enthusiasts,

I’d like to start by wishing each and every one a safe, healthy and

time to relax and unwind with family and friends during the holidays.

We ended 2015 on a strong note with 105 members attending our Holiday Party

Fri., Dec. 04 | Joann Warmkessel coordinated a bus trip to Longwood Gardens to kick off

the holiday season. The group of over 50 people departed the Park & Ride (Easton, PA) en

route to Kennett Square, PA. Joann and Laura (Hegyi) prepared snack bags to hold over

the weary travelers.

Upon arrival, most visited the Conservatory before enjoying an after‐

noon buffet in a private dining room. The mild weather encouraged

everyone to stroll the grounds for an evening of spectacular lights

and displays. The club has many photographers who lugged their

equipment in search of the perfect shot. Light crowds helped make

this a terrific day with friends. The return bus trip included a showing

of National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation...and a car fire wit‐

nessed along the Turnpike.

Sat., Dec. 19 | Nearly 110 club members and special guests attended the 2015 Holiday Party held at The Palace Center

in Allentown, PA. A cash bar and appetizer spread got things kicked off with holiday tunes in the background. A buffet

dinner of soup, salad, beef tips, chicken and stuffed flounder followed with a

dessert and coffee table to conclude the meal.

Following dinner, everyone possible gathered in front of the Christmas tree

for a group photo. Next, President Laura Hegyi first presented holiday cen‐

terpieces to AACC’s Lifetime members in attendance. Then she recognized

some members for their part in the club’s successes over the past year and

presented the final centerpieces. All club members received a special AACC (Continued on page 5)

Marty Hegyi’s My Marketplace feature runs through March 2016, when our club activities pick up again. Contact Marty

if you have a product to present to fellow club members about the latest and greatest Corvette products or services.

At our December meeting, Joe Iervolino gave a pitch for the AirMan cordless inflator avail‐

able through SharperImage.com. The unit is smaller than a typical cordless drill, powered

by either a rechargeable battery or your car’s 12V outlet, and includes an LED light plus tips

to inflate tires as well as sports equipment. A neat feature is the ability to program a “set

pressure” at which the unit will stop, eliminating the need for a tire gauge. Pricing is

under $100 and the item is available at multiple online retailers.

If you are not comfortable speaking in front of a group, provide Marty with your information and he will gladly present

it on your behalf. (You know Marty — he likes to talk!)

Adventure Trip 2016 Chair: Jeff Mohring (‘04) Thu., Jun. 02 ‐ Wed., Jun. 08 | Our club trip will take place in June 2016. Preliminary plans are to leave on Thursday,

June 2nd and drive to Rocky Mount, NC. (This is approximately 7.5 hours without stops). We will stay there for 1 night.

Friday, June 3rd: Drive to Myrtle Beach, SC (3.5 hours without stops). The Myrtle Beach Corvette Club is hosting a din‐

ner at the Landmark Beachside Hotel that evening and their Corvette Show, “Boardwalk on the Beach,” is held the fol‐

lowing day, Saturday, June 4th. Sunday, June 5th: Drive from Myrtle Beach to Charleston, SC (2.25 hour drive), where

we will stay for 2 nights. Sightseeing plans are being made for both Sunday and Monday, June 6th. Tuesday, June 7th:

Drive 6 hours north to Richmond, VA area; stay for 1 night. Wednesday, June 8th: Drive home (approx. 6 hours without

stops).

Some items and facts we do have:

Lodging will cost approx. $1,200. ($150 x 6 nights = $900 + taxes & fees) the cost of the hotels are going to be

considerable because it is prime season at destination/resort towns.

Food will cost approx. $1,000. ($150 [including taxes & tips] x 7 days = $1,050)

We will drive approx. 1,800 miles round trip therefore, transportation will cost about $250. (1,800 miles cars get

approximately 25 mpg, 1,800/25 = 75 gallons x $3.00/gal = $225.)

Grand total will cost about $2,200 ‐ $2,500 for 2 people.

Contact Jeff at 610‐392‐6898 or [email protected] if you want to join the 18 cars who are already interested.

Eclectic Docket of Corvettes at Barrett-Jackson

Page 9 AllentownCorvetteClub.org ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 23, Iss. 1 | January 2016

This article originally appeared in the Scottsdale Independent on Dec. 9, 2015.

Sat., Jan. 23 ‐ Sun., Jan. 31 | Barrett‐Jackson, The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions®, is set to light up the auc‐

tion block with an eclectic docket of Chevrolet Corvettes during the nine‐day 45th Anniversary Auction from Jan. 23 to

31, 2016, at WestWorld of Scottsdale.

Among these highly sought‐after American cars are three VIN #001 Corvette convertibles from 1955 to 1957, a 1954

roadster that was entombed until 1986, as well as two of the greatest original 1967 427/435s to ever cross the block.

“I couldn’t be more excited about the docket of Corvettes that are consigned for our 45th Anniversary Auction in

Scottsdale this coming January,” said Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett‐Jackson.

“We always have exceptional groupings of Corvettes at our auctions, but this may be the

best we’ve ever consigned.”

Three VIN #001 Corvettes from 1955, 1956 and 1957 will cross the auction block at the 45th

Anniversary Scottsdale Auction. The 1955 convertible (Lot #1351), wearing a Polo White

exterior, features a 265ci V8 engine and scored a 99.3 that led to a 2008 NCRS Top Flight

award. The Venetian Red and white 1956 convertible (Lot #1352) features the first dual 4‐

barrel production engine and is rated at 225hp with a special solid‐lifter Duntov 098 cam‐

shaft. The third VIN #001 Corvette is a 1957 Cascade Green and beige convertible (Lot

#1353). It was not only the first production 283ci Corvette, but the first production 283ci

Chevrolet vehicle with the majority of the components dated July 1956, including the en‐

gine, transmission and differential.

Among the most anticipated Corvettes set to star at the 45th Anniversary Scottsdale Auction

is the famous “Entombed” Corvette. This 1954 Corvette roadster (Lot #1279) was owned by

Richard Sampson, a successful business man in Maine who entombed the car in a brick and

mortar vault in 1959. It was removed by Sampson’s daughter in 1986 and has been preserved ever since. An amazing

piece of American history, this Corvette has the same 2,335 miles that were on the odometer when it was finally saw

daylight again, 28 years after its entombment.

“Every one of these Corvettes has a story associated with it,” said Steve Davis, president of Barrett‐Jackson. “It has

been exciting to work with their owners who have cared for these remarkable collector cars. I think it will be just as

exciting to see these cars pass on to the next set of owners, who will help carry on and preserve these amazing Cor‐

vette legacies.”

Originally owned by musician Freddie Haeffner, the 1967 Corvette 427/435 convertible (Lot #1372) has been nick‐

named the “Music Car.” Purchased in 1967, it was used to promote Haeffner’s band in car shows and parades until

1987. The Corvette has received multiple Bloomington Gold certificates, is part of the Bloomington Gold Hall of Fame,

is also a five‐time NCRS Regional or National Top Flight award recipient and was awarded the coveted NCRS Duntov

Mark of Excellence.

dale, visit www.barrett‐jackson.com/Events/Event/Docket/Scottsdale‐2016.

For more information about Barrett‐Jackson, visit http://www.barrett‐jackson.com, or call 480‐421‐6694.

Editor’s Note: As of the publication date, there are 132 Corvettes on the docket scheduled to cross the block and nearly

two dozen more Corvette‐powered vehicles for your purchasing pleasure. There are no charity Corvettes planned for

2016, but 14 are featured in the Salon Collection. Included are the three “Serial 001s” in the previous article, a 1972 ZR1

with 16,300 documented miles, and a return appearance of the 1959 “Purple People Eater” SCCA champion racer.

Mon., Dec. 07 | Believe it or not folks, there was once the possibility of no more Corvettes. According to Hemmings

Daily, “A management change brought with it a new order from GM’s board of directors: Stop development on the

Corvette and let it sunset.”

As consumers, enthusiasts, and drivers all we can say to that board of directors is “Boooo!” Luckily, there was someone

with a broader vision to speak not only for all of us but for the future of Corvette.

His name is Russ McLean, and this year he was rightfully inducted into the National Corvette

Museum Hall of Fame.

As the Corvette Program Manager in the 1990s, McLean took a stand and decided not to follow

orders when he was told to let the Corvette die. Regretfully, Corvette was losing money at a

rate of $1,000 per car. The video tells the story of McLean’s efforts to keep the “Thrill of the

Ride” alive and take it to new heights.

According to GM Authority and no news to us, the Corvette C4 generation was a dark time for

the vehicle. It was an unprofitable venture for General Motors despite the ZR1 trim. McLean

took a stand to the executives who wanted to kill the Corvette after the C4. He understood the history behind Corvette

and simply would not and did not allow it to happen.

Russ McLean Continued

At a time when GM was suffering from financial difficulties and continuous reorganization, McLean decided to isolate

the Corvette team.

He established a stable organizational structure independent

from GM’s unreliable structure.

In doing so, he was able to make the necessary changes to im‐

prove the Corvette’s quality and reduce overall costs. McLean

led Corvette to make a profit within his first year running the

program.

Once the fourth generation Corvette was stable, McLean fo‐

cused on developing the C5, which at the time, GM had al‐

ready approved.

McLean stated, “As a manager, I believe in doing the right things rather than doing things right. The Corvette was al‐

ways the innovation leader for General Motors and the world, and that innovation flowed into so many other cars. So,

when somebody told me to let that icon die, I just couldn’t let that happen – it was not the right thing to do.”

From then on, McLean worked almost “incognito.” He kept the Corvette platform team running in silence, not asking

permission for anything they did and avoiding contact and communication with his boss and GM management, Hem‐

mings Daily added.

After rounding up funds from wherever possible, McLean and his team built a test vehicle and invited executives to

drive it. The car was not only deemed worthy of production, but the new Corvette C5 would go on to become Motor

Trend’s 1998 Car of the Year, according to GM Authority.

McLean’s triumph did not come without repercussions. In his evaluations, it was stated that he was not a team player

and did not follow directions. “Yes, I lost out on promotions after that,” Mc Lean added. He left the Corvette team in

1996 and GM entirely in 2001.

It is only appropriate that Russ McLean is officially inducted into the National Corvette Museum Hall of Fame. Accord‐

ing to GM Authority, the Corvette C5 was even more important than some may think. The C5 platform set the blue‐

prints for the C6 and the 2015 C7 Sting Ray that was to follow in the coming decade.

There is no question that America’s favorite sports car still exists because of the tenacity of a man who would not give

up on a great concept and a great car. We will reserve our thoughts to the GM’s management team of the time, and

will close by simply saying “Thank You Mr. McLean and Godspeed!”

Corvette Plant to Utilize Solar Energy Dec. 03 | GM leads the auto industry in solar use in the US, and in an effort to continue their

investment in clean, renewable energy, the company will break ground later this month on an 850‐kilowatt array at

Bowling Green Assembly.

The new array will be the largest solar installation by any automaker in Kentucky and will generate 1.2 million kilowatt

hours of energy annually, enough to produce about 850 Corvettes. The Corvette features the greatest efficiency of any

sports car on the market, delivering an Environmental Protection Agency ‐ estimated 29 mpg highway rating.

Corvette Named a Performance Car Best Buy Dec. 03 | Kelley Blue Book has named the 2016 Chevrolet Corvette the Performance Car "best buy". Contenders for

the award ranged from the 2016 Mazda MX‐5 Miata, to the 2016 Ford Shelby GT 350. "But it was last year's winner, the

Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, that carried the day on the strength of overall performance that compares favorably with

sports cars costing tens of thousands of dollars more," the KBB.com editors wrote. "But beyond stellar performance,

the 2016 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray offers the kind of comfort and drivability that takes it from a weekend‐ or special

occasion‐only fun car to a truly engaging vehicle perfectly suited as a daily driver."

2016 Corvette Hall of Fame Announced Dec. 10 | The National Corvette Museum has announced the following inductees to be recognized as part of the 19th

Annual Corvette Hall of Fame Ceremony in 2016: Bob Bondurant in the category of Racing; Ralph Kramer in the cate‐

gory of GM/Chevrolet; and Donna Mae Mims in the category of Enthusiast. These three individuals will be recognized

with the highest honor bestowed by the Museum for their contributions to the past, present and future of Corvette.

Bob Bondurant helped to validate the Chevrolet Corvette as a world‐class sports car during its early years, winning on

racetracks in both the U.S. and abroad. In 1959 he won 18 of 20 SCCA‐B production races and

from 1960‐63 he won 30 of the 32 races he entered. Today, Bondurant has graduated over

500,000 students ranging from celebrities, military officers, professional race drivers, teens and

driving enthusiasts to be better, safer drivers at the Bob Bondurant School of High Perform‐

ance Driving in Phoenix, AZ.

Ralph Kramer was one of the first Chevrolet executives to bolster GM support for the Corvette Museum in its founding

years, helping establish connections, opening doors, and preserving history. Had it not been for

him, the one‐millionth Corvette likely would not be a museum display piece today. During his

tenure in Chevrolet public relations from 1973‐1995, he managed the brand's pace car and

race engine presence at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, later becoming the Speedway's

public affairs director and director of the Hall of Fame Museum.

For Donna Mae Mims, a.k.a. "The Lady in Pink," it was love at first sight when it came to Corvette. After purchasing one

brand new from Don Yenko Chevrolet, she soon joined the Yenko/Chevrolet race team that

dominated A/Production and B/Production SCCA racing with Corvette. Mims served as Man‐

ager of Hi‐Performance at Yenko Sports Cars, was a freelance writer for several car magazines,

and inspired Adrienne Barbeau's character in the Cannonball Run movie. She was active in the

Steel Cities SCCA Region, Corvette Club of Western Pennsylvania, Three Rivers Corvette Club

(which she founded), Steeltown Corvette Club, and Tri‐Rivers Car Club Council.

The induction ceremony and banquet will be Friday, September 2, 2016.

GM Invests $44 Million in Bowling Green Dec. 10 | General Motors said Wednesday it will invest $44 million in the Bowling Green Assembly plant to support

increased capacity in its Performance Build Center, adding 36 new jobs. Construction and tool re‐arrangement is

planned to start in January 2016.

The expansion of the Performance Build Center is fueled by the success of the Corvette Z06, which currently accounts

for nearly a third of all Corvettes produced at Bowling Green Assembly.

The Performance Build Center also offers a one‐of‐a‐kind experience for customers, the Build Your Own Engine pro‐

gram. This program allows customers to assemble the 650‐hp supercharged LT4 engine for their cars. The $5,000 op‐

tion package includes a full day with a Performance Build Center engine assembly technician who instructs and over‐

sees the build, a personalized engine plaque identifying the customer and professional photography.
