Hello Corvette Enthusiasts,

First, I'd like to offer my congratulations to all the recent trophy

winners at June’s car shows; we had a record number and many

were multiple winners.

July is heating up as well, not only weather‐wise, but also with activities. This

month’s activities start off with our trip to Watkins Glen, NY for a race weekend

in the heart of Finger Lakes wine country. Remaining July activities include the

Chicken Run, Chatter Box cruise night, our annual Summer Picnic and a tour of

Stoudts Brewing Company in Adamstown, PA. These events involve Corvettes,

food and fun, which always result in a huge turnout. Details of each appear within

this newsletter.

In August, we elect club officers and two new Board Members. Nominations for

office begin at our first meeting in July. If you are interested in becoming a club

officer or member of the Board, please let it be known so you can be nominated

and enter the ballot race. It takes committed members to keep our club strong.

Thinking of You It is with deepest regrets that we mention the passing of Dennis Sharpe’s mother, Edith (Hollawell)

on Saturday, May 27th. Funeral services were held in early June in Huntingdon Valley, PA.

If anyone knows of a member who is hospitalized, had surgery, or lost a loved one, please notify

Recap: Lobsta’ Anyone? Tue., May 30—Sun., Jun 04 | The group’s trip to the Vettes of Coastal Maine show was a true success! Everyone had a

great time, made some new friends, saw some beautiful scenery, and even brought home a few awards. Stories were

shared at the June 14th meeting when participating members relived the weekend by donning their 70’s costumes.

It was a successful trip as far as trophies are concerned — Tom & Gloria Aird, 3rd C4; Jeff & Janet Mohring, 2nd C5; Joe

Fri., Jul 01 | The Fourth of July is right around the corner, and what better way to gear up for the celebrations than by

showing off America’s Sports Car to your coworkers? Friday, July 1st marks the 16th Annual “Drive Your Corvette to

Work Day.” Corvette owners across the world are encouraged to ditch their daily driver, and take their Corvette for a

spin to their place of employment on July 1st.

On June 30th 1953, the first Corvette rolled off the assembly line in Flint, Michigan, and instantly an American icon was

born. The first 300 Corvettes were made at the facility in Flint; all were Polo White convertibles with black canvas tops

and red interiors. Since that day, over 1.6 million Corvettes have been produced. The original production place of the

Corvettes in Flint, Michigan was demolished in 2003. However, not all of the facility that brought us the first generation

of Corvettes is gone. The Corvette Museum offers enthusiasts wanting a unique fragment of Corvette history the

chance to purchase a brick salvaged from the original Flint Factory.

“Drive Your Corvette to Work Day” is celebrated annually on the Friday closest to June 30th, the day the first Corvette

was produced back in 1953. This tradition was started by Mid America Motorworks founder Mike Yager, who launched

“Drive Your Corvette to Work Day” in 2001. “We understand why many owners consider their Corvette to be a special

car and only drive it occasionally” said Yager, “but we think driving your Corvette to work, at least one day a year, is an

excellent way to demonstrate just how popular Corvettes are. And it is a chance for Corvette owners to meet new Cor‐

vette owners.” Celebrated by thousands worldwide, the goal is to get as many Corvettes on the road as possible, trans‐

forming the everyday work commute into an ode to America’s Sports Car.

Be sure to share a photo of your Corvette at work on July 1st on the Museum’s Facebook page. A winner will be ran‐

domly selected to receive one of the historic bricks from the Flint, Michigan factory. Happy cruising!

Sun., Jun 11 | It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood and that neighbor‐

hood was the Blue Valley Farm Show for the Slate Belt Corvette Club's Vettes

For Vets Show. They had a tricky tray, 50/50, DJ, great eagle trophies, vendors

with a wide variety of items to sell and ice cream. A wide range of cars, trucks,

and motorcycles showed up to display their vehicles and support a very worth‐

while cause.

AACC’s winners included: Mark Rawlins (3rd C4),

Lou Soto (2nd C5), Ken Greidanus (1st C6),

Len Feinberg (1st C7), and Jim Karch (2nd C7).

Sat., Jun 24 | Sandi Kirby hosted Lehigh Valley area show cars at the Faulk‐

ner Chevy‐Cadillac dealership in Bethlehem. With 90 vehicles registered

some were unfortunately turned away due to lot capacity. Showing their sup‐

port for the community, Faulkner enlisted a local Boy Scout troop who pro‐

vided some wonderful refreshments. Thanks to everyone who volunteered

with parking and registration and helped to make the event a success.

Recap: Faulkner Car Show

Wed., Jun 21 | Gary George coordinated another record breaker at Putt‐U (Center Valley, PA). 56 members enjoyed

great weather and a challenging round of mini golf. The Blue

course was taken over by our club and so was half of the parking

lot with 23 Vettes. Looking around the course, it appeared that

everyone had a nice time.

Racing (& Wine) in Watkins Glen Thu., Jun. 29—Tue., Jul. 03 | AACC’s July newsletter is late because your Editors were enjoying IMSA racing in Watkins

Glen, NY for a few days. The group set off Thursday and explored the area upon arrival. On Friday, Michelle and I led a

cruise around Keuka Lake for tastings at 3 wineries and lunch in Penn Yan while others explored Corning, NY.

Saturday we all headed for the track and enjoyed 2 days of racing at Watkins Glen International. Unfortunately, our

Corvette C7.Rs could not overcome their starting positions toward the back of the GTLM pack. Ultimately Antonio Gar‐

cia and Jan Magnussen pushed the #3 to a third place finish. The weather did not cooperate fully, but the rains didn't

dampen our spirits.

Before departing for home on Monday, 5 couples

enjoyed a Seneca Lake schooner cruise under

beautiful skies.

Recap: Vettes Cruisin’ for Pets by Len Feinberg (‘15) Sun., Jun. 25 | It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood and that neighborhood

was Alvernia University, for Skyline Drive Corvette Club's Vettes Cruisin’ For Pets

Show to benefit the Berks Animal Rescue League. It was a record turnout of Corvettes

for a good cause. There was a DJ, Chinese Auction, Beer Raffle, animals to adopt, and

great food.

Chicken (& Ice Cream) Run Chair: Jeff Mohring (‘04, ‘16)

Sat., Jul. 08 | It’s time again for the AACC Chicken Run. We will depart the Lehigh Valley for lunch

at Kauffman’s Bar‐B‐Que Restaurant (Bethel, PA; www.kauffmansbbqrestaurant.com).

A post‐meal ice cream stop will likely be Heisler’s Dairy Bar (Tamaqua, PA; www.heislersdairy.com).

This is a rain or shine event; Corvettes are optional. Payment in advance is not required.

Chatterbox Cruise Chairs: Mike Cutro (‘14) & Bobby Riehl (‘14) Fri., Jul. 14 | Mike Cutro will lead any interested Corvette to Augusta, NJ for the Friday Night Cruise at the Chatterbox.

The group will depart the Park & Ride (Rte. 33 & Wm. Penn) in the mid‐afternoon (meet @ 2:45, depart by 3). Remem‐

ber to bring your chairs and 2‐way radios (tuned to Ch. 5.5). EZ‐Pass will be helpful for an express return trip. The group

is departing early to better ensure the chance of parking together in the spaces which Bobby Riehl hopes to save.

AACC Picnic Chair: Jeff Mohring (‘04, ‘16)

Sun., Jul. 23 | Join fellow club members for some summer food and fun at our annual picnic. We return to Bicenten‐

nial Park in East Hanover Twsp., a few miles north of Lehigh Valley International Airport. The format remains nearly the

same with a minimal fee for the meal and drinks. Attendees are asked to bring an appetizer. The club will provide the

meal, dessert and drinks. Details appear on the event flyer on pp. 9‐10.

Stoudts Brewery Tour & Lunch Chair: Joel Dean (’16)

Sun., Jul. 30 | Join your fellow and potential AACC members for a tour of Stoudts Brewing

Company in Adamstown, PA followed by lunch at the Picasso Room. Stoudts Brewing Com‐

pany (2800 North Reading Road, Adamstown, PA 19501) is a destination in itself, with a res‐

taurant, raw bar, bakery, creamery, coffee bar, plus the Antiques Mall. We plan to arrive

about 11:30 am to park in a reserved Corvette area. Lunch will be served in the (private) Pi‐

casso Room where we will order off the menu and be presented separate checks. After

lunch, we will tour the brewery, then spend some free time exploring the bakery and an‐

tique mall.

The event is rain or shine. Meet in the parking lot behind Cracker Barrel (Rtes. 78 & 100) at

10 am to depart by 10:15. Note: As of July 1st, the participant limit has been increased to 75

people, so be sure to get your name on the Interest Sheet at the July meetings.


Das Awkscht Fescht Chair: Marty Hegyi (‘69, ‘07, ‘17)

Fri.‐Sun., Aug. 04‐06 | The annual “Das Awkscht Fescht” classic car and truck show will be held at Macungie Memorial

Park (Macungie, PA). Vehicles must be 25 years or older to participate. (This year, 1992 Corvettes are eligible to partici‐

pate in the show.) Registration will close on July 1st and there is no day‐of‐show registration. (www.awkscht.com)

Volunteers are needed to assist with parking Corvettes on Sunday, Aug. 6th. AACC will have a tent with our banner and

club information. Gates open at 6:00 am for walk‐ins. Show cars can enter at 7:30 am. Admission: $8 for adults, $3 for

age 15 and under. Personal vehicles are not permitted on the grounds — only eligible show cars. Contact Marty Hegyi

(610‐730‐2846) to assist with parking.

Pocono Indycar Race Chair: Laura Hegyi (‘69, ‘07, ‘17)

Sun., Aug. 20 | Join your fellow AACC members in the Corvette Corral at Pocono Raceway and then enjoy the ABC

Supply 500 Verizon IndyCar Series Race! Participants get free admission for show vehicle, driver and one passenger;

1 paddock pass for the show vehicle; and 2 grandstand tickets. You must pre‐register to participate. More information

will be discussed at upcoming club meetings.

Thu., Aug 25 ‐ Sun., Aug. 28 | The board has approved the payment for AACC to have a 15’ x 15’ space in the Club

Tent section at Corvettes at Carlisle again this year. If we get 35 AACC cars to pre‐register for Carlisle’s show field, the

tent space fee is refunded. Everyone is invited to pre‐register, get out from under the hot sun, and take a rest with

fellow club members. Registration information is available at www.carlisleevents.com.

Sun., Sep. 10 | Our Fall show is only a few months away and the tradition continues at the ArtsQuest complex in the

shadow of the SteelStacks and open to all things Chevy! This year’s event again honors the heroes of 9/11. Hopefully

the parking issues for 2016 are behind us and we again look forward to strong participation from our Bowtie brethren.

David Hornung will again coordinate our trophy sponsors. Sponsor forms will be available at club meetings. Each $100

sponsorship purchases three (3) trophies, receives event marketing recognition, and includes one vehicle registration.

Michelle continues to receive registration forms — over 20 were received to date. Volunteer sign‐up sheets will be

available at club meetings starting in July. We encourage (and rely upon) all club members to chip in wherever possible

— your help will truly make this event a success. The event flyer appears on pages 11‐12 of this newsletter.

WE ARE COLLECTING DONATIONS FOR OUR TROOPS Do you want to do something to help our soldiers serving overseas? Support the Troops, Inc. sends packages to our troops on a regular basis, not just during the holidays. If possible items should be fragrance-free, no pork products, no perishables, glass or crushable items. Think of items useful and easily packable! Short list of suggested items that are often needed: Disposable cameras, snacks & candy (individually wrapped), drink mixes to be mixed in water, peanut butter & crackers, sunscreen, toiletries, razors, AA batteries, sanitizers & wipes, personal care items, and personal notes! Personal notes to our soldiers from adults or school children are always needed and really boost their morale, letting them know that the people back home support them! Please do not date them. Monetary donations are gladly accepted if you wish to help defray the costs of shipping or to buy any other needed items. Each box sent currently costs about $16. Tax deductible receipts are available – we are a Charitable 501(c)(3). Checks can be made to

It’s that time of year again, when your friends solicit you to nominate them for an open club office or Board position.

Get involved and make a difference in YOUR Allentown Area Corvette Club for the 2017‐2018 year. Elections will be

held during the last regular meeting in August (the 23rd) with nominations still being accepted at each July and August

meeting.

In case you missed it in the By‐Laws, here are the eligibility requirements (and more) for each position. All officers shall

be an active member in good standing per Article III, Section B; a member of the Club for at least twelve (12) months;

over twenty‐one (21) years of age, and legally competent to act as an officer of the Club. The President, Vice President,

and members of the Board of Directors may not succeed themselves more than once except for the Secretary and

Treasurer. All officers shall be directly responsible to the Board of Directors for their actions.

President: The membership shall elect a President of the Club. It shall be the duty of the President to chair the

general meetings, appoint his/her representatives, and generally carry out those Club duties nor‐

mally assigned to the President of an organization. He/she shall appoint a committee to audit the

books of the Treasurer at the last regular meeting in July. At the conclusion of his/her elected term as

President, he/she shall serve as the Chairperson of the Board of Directors and will be entitled to vote

at Board meetings. Outgoing = Laura Hegyi; 2017 Nominees: TBD.

Vice‐President: The membership shall elect a Vice President of the Club. It shall be his/her duty to assist the Presi‐

dent in the presidential duties, serve as Parliamentarian at all meetings of the general membership,

interpret the By‐Laws, though not arbitrarily enforce them, and generally carry out those duties nor‐

mally assigned to the Vice President of an organization. The Vice President shall also be responsible

for the club’s attendance records and recognized activity points. Outgoing = Mike Cutro;

2017 Nominees: TBD.

Secretary: The membership shall elect a Secretary of the Club. It shall be his/her duty to record the proceedings

of all regularly scheduled general membership meetings, special meetings and Board meetings. In

addition, the Secretary shall be responsible for correspondence between outsiders and the Club

when official business is being conducted. He/she shall also carry out those additional duties nor‐

mally assigned to the Secretary of an organization. Incumbent = Carol Jenkins; 2017 Nominees: TBD.

Treasurer: The membership shall elect a Treasurer of the Club. It shall be his/her duty to have custody of all

monies, debts, obligations and assets belonging to the Club. He/she shall receive all monies of the

Club and shall deposit them to the Club account in a bank insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance

Corporation. He/she shall have direct control over the supervision of all Club assets and of all pay‐

ments of Club debts and obligations, subject to Board approval. He/she shall also maintain a proper

set of accounting books to guarantee compliance with local, state, and federal laws. All checks shall

be signed by the Treasurer and/or countersigned by either the President or the Vice President. A re‐

port shall also be made to the general membership at all regularly scheduled meetings, and to the

Board. A report shall be printed and made available to the general membership at the first business

meeting immediately following the audit. Incumbent = Janet Mohring; 2017 Nominees: TBD.

2018 ZR1 Specs Nailed Down Dave Cruikshank, CorvetteOnline.com Fri., Jun 09| The past six months have been a wonderland for Corvette fans around the world. From “Super” C7 ZR1s,

to multi‐valve motor rumors, to mid‐engine dreams finally materializing, these are the golden years for Corvette.

What we will see in the next 18 months arguably will be hazy mythology for

buff books and click bait for decades. What a great time to be not only a

Corvette fan, but a General Motors supporter as well ‐ see SS/ZL1 Camaro, V‐

Series Cadillacs et al.

There have been so many wiggly YouTube vids of the swirly camo’d C7 ZR1

that they are almost ho‐hum now. Don’t get complacent just yet though.

According to Don Sherman, veteran Car and Driver scribe, he says the ZR1 will debut at Continental Tire Road Race

Showcase IMSA event at Road America this August. If that’s true, we are approximately 60 days out from 2018 C7 ZR1

intro. If not, we think we’ll see it at NAIAS in Detroit the first week in January 2018.

There has been much speculation of what the final specs will be on the car. As we have mentioned before, the 2018 C7

ZR1 will be to the Z06 what the Camaro ZL1 1LE is to a base ZL1. We’ve been following closely and combined with our

network of other enthusiasts and industry watchers.[sic][,] [w]e’re certain the following are the final specs of the new

2018 ZR1 Corvette:

Pushrod supercharged V‐8 engine – with big displacement 2650cc blower – with 750‐800 horsepower. We aren’t

saying that a DOHC motor isn’t on the way, we just think it’ll debut as a “double‐whammy” with mid‐engine model.

Running gear upgrades mirroring Camaro ZL1 1LE – Multimatic shocks, bigger sway bars, revised track focused sus‐

pension tweaks, and sticky, gumball Goodyear rubber.

2018 ZR1 Specs Continued...

Active Aero – we’ll see two versions of this “heat sink” killer technology. We’ve all seen the “big wing, little wing”

mules in the videos so expect two flavors of high tech cooling plumage to choose from.

Revised styling from A‐pillar forward including hi‐rise hood bulge, revised front fascia and unique front fender

vent/badging.

Braking is where the ZR1 and 1LE Camaro sibling will diverge. Count on the ZR1 to have the Z07 carbon disc brakes

as standard equipment, while little brother pony car relies solely on non‐ceramic Brembo brakes.

Interior will mostly be carry over but with specific badging and all of the bespoke factory options we’ve come to

expect over the last few years.

Available in Coupe or Convertible.

Finally, how long is the C7 for this world? Rumors have it that the car will be Corvette’s front engine, rear drive “swan

song” and will fade away after the mid‐engine model debuts. Other reports say the car will soldier on until 2021 or so.

What say you? Do you think the Corvette can rely solely on a mid‐engine car to reliably sell 40k copies a year like the

C7? If not, there will be a lot of explaining to do at GM headquarters. We’ve always said that we think the Camaro is

being groomed to take over the C7’s place. What do you think?


Z06 Lawsuit - GM in Hot Seat Jenna Scheibe, CorvetteOnline.com Fri., Jun 16 | Our beloved Corvette, specifically the Z06, is advertised as being “track ready” and, when it debuted, it

was dubbed the “most capable track‐Corvette” ever built. Often, buyers dish out upwards of six figures to simply get

their hands on one. Widely covered on the interwebs, there have been stories of Z06s running hot, with owners exiting

the action at their local track day in “limp mode.”

Some attorneys were brought into the picture and they found a pattern. Again, this isn’t recent news. GM knows this is

going on and, in 2016, reported they would be fixing cooling issues for the 2017 model year Z.

They replaced the hood with one sporting more vents and swapped out the supercharger cover but importantly, didn’t

help those with previous model years. The company covered it by warning that automatic transmissions have a greater

chance of overheating.

Motor Trend completely eliminated the car from their 2015 “Best Driver’s Car” testing after going into limp mode on

the track. GM covered by claiming it was due to a “servicing oversight.”

Now, a group of buyers with aforementioned lawyers have filed a lawsuit against General Motors regarding the ongo‐(Continued on page 17)

ing issue, claiming a cooling system defect can put the 2015‐2017 Z06 on the sidelines. The case was filed in Florida –

natch – by Hagens Berman, who says the Z06 can also go into limp mode on public roads as well – not to mention the

excessive heat’s effect on vital engine components. It’s stated directly in the document that GM was “knowingly selling

allegedly defective” cars and, ultimately, marketing them as track‐ready.

Maybe so, but let’s look at the flip side.

Tadge Juechter, Corvette Chief Engineer, has been reported saying that heat sink complaints come from less than five

percent of all Z06 owners. What this might be, is a few owners ran their cars hard and they got hot. Racing conditions

can add a tremendous amount of stress to the car. We also understand that if you bought a Z06 for track days, heat

soak issues could be quite a disappointing issue.

Hagens Berman is a known pitbull law firm that has a history of automotive lawsuits under its belt and because of some

tweaks GM made to the 2017 Z06, they probably smell blood in the water.

It is estimated that over 30,000 Z06s are affected by this issue. The lawsuit claims that GM should retrofit the cars with

new components and fix any issues brought on as a result of overheating.

We say, c’mon guys! Can all parties agree to meet in the middle? We get both sides of the story, but this is a real bum‐

mer. This could be a PR nightmare for GM as well, so a speedy compromise is probably the best way out of this.

Then we can all get back to show‐n‐shines, cruisin’ around and haulin’ ass…

2017 Corvette Stats Available Jun 15 | General Motors has released the final 2017 model year Corvette stats. A total of 32,782 Corvettes were pro‐

duced: 34.3% Stingray Coupe, 30.2% Grand Sport Coupe, 18.9% Z06 Coupe, 7% Stingray Convertible, 6.2% Grand Sport

Convertible and 3.3% Z06 Convertible.

Once again, automatics more than doubled the production of manuals at 77%. The 1LT

package was the most popular for Stingrays and Grand Sports, while the 3LZ package

was the most popular for the Z06.

For colors, Arctic White was the most popular with 18%, followed by Watkins Glen

Gray with 17.7%, Black with 16%, Torch Red with 14%, Admiral Blue with 9%, Blade

Silver with 6%, Long Beach Red with 6%, Corvette Racing Yellow with 4%, Black Rose with 4% and Sterling Blue with 2%.

Note that if you add the two shades of red together, then “red” would be the most popular color with 20%.

A Surprise Proposal Jun 15 | On Monday, we helped Jacob of Kansas City, MO surprise his girlfriend,

Ashley, with a marriage proposal in the Museum. Jacob has long been a Corvette

dreamer and wanted to pop the question in our Nostalgia area by the car that started

Family Surprises Dad with Corvette Jun 22 | Neckties, cologne, tools, grilling supplies, a card ‐ most of us pickup a small item that may or may not be very

meaningful for dad on Father's Day. But for one Owensboro, Kentucky man ‐ he received the surprise of a lifetime.

Randy had been a fan of Corvette for a long time, owning two in his younger years with plans to purchase another "one

day." Wife Stacy decided that "one day" was now. We hope Randy's reaction to his gift puts a smile on your face like it

NCM News & Events Continued... Third Place Dramatic Finish at LeMans Jun 22 | Corvette Racing has experienced highs and lows in its

18 appearances at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. America’s premier GT racing team added

to that Sunday with a dramatic third‐place finish in the GTE Pro category with Antonio

Garcia, Jan Magnussen and Jordan Taylor climbing onto the podium together for the

second time in four years.

The No. 63 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet Corvette C7.R came back from an early‐race

puncture and clawed its way back into contention before barely missing out on its

ninth class victory at Le Mans since 2001.

Oliver Gavin, Tommy Milner and Marcel Fässler placed eighth in the No. 64 Mobil 1/

SiriusXM Corvette C7.R. The trio had a fight‐back of their own after Milner lost a wheel

in the opening half of the race. It proved to be the only mistake by that trio but the four laps lost proved costly as the

GTE Pro race was as much as a seven‐car fight into the last six hours. Read more at CorvetteRacing.com

First 2018 Corvette Delivered Jun 29 | On Saturday, June 24th the Museum delivered our first 2018 R8C optioned

Corvette through the NCM delivery program. The Blade Silver Stingray Coupe was

picked up by Ian and Rebecca Sullivan of Fort Wayne, IN. Ian had previously owned a

1975 Stingray while serving in the Army but had to give the car up awhile back. For the

past few years he'd been thinking about purchasing a new Stingray, and decided after

graduating and getting a new job ‐ it was time.

"I've always loved Corvettes and thought it would be a cool experience to pick it up at the Museum," Ian said. "I read

about it on Corvette Forum, and everyone that had done a R8C loved it and said it was an unforgettable experience."
