Hi Corvette Enthusiasts,

Hopefully the unusually mild winter weather this year has allowed

some of you to enjoy your ‘Vettes a little longer. February is pro‐

cars will definitely be in hibernation until the spring thaw.

And speaking of Spring, our 15th annual Springfest Corvette Show is less than

three months away and will once again be held at DeSales University, this year on

Sunday, May 1st. Please begin to think of items for our all‐important tricky tray

auction. Gift cards to grocery stores or restaurants, oil changes, car detailing sup‐

plies, wine baskets, and anything else you can think of are appreciated. Let us all

make this year’s Springfest and tricky tray the very best it has ever been!

February also marks the beginning of two meetings per month (the 2nd and 4th

Wednesdays). This schedule runs through November.

Although it may be cold outside, Mike Cutro and the Activities Committee have

several indoor (non‐Corvette) events planned for this month. Please read this

Brush and a Bottle Chair: Bonnie Serfass (‘60, ‘93, ‘12)

Sat., Jan. 16 | Bonnie Serfass hosted nine of AACC’s ladies for an afternoon of painting, snacks and

drinks at Country Clay Studio in Brodheadsville, PA. During the 3‐hour class, the ladies started by paint‐

ing the backgrounds, eating/drinking while that dried, then returning to their easels to complete their

still life masterpieces! Everyone had a great time so watch for another event in the future.

A special thanks to Bonnie for coordinating the afternoon!

STRIKE! Chair: Barry Dorshimer (‘00)

Sun., Jan. 17 | Nearly two dozen club members spent their Sunday afternoon with Barry and

Janet Dorshimer at Hampton Lanes in Northampton, PA. Congratulations to Lisa Denning who

threw a high score of 254!

Super Saturday at Barrett-Jackson Barrett-Jackson.com

Sat., Jan. 30 | It was one of those distinctively Barrett‐Jackson moments. “Eastbound and Down” started playing,

bringing the capacity audience in the arena to their feet as one of the most recognizable Trans Ams in the world rolled

onto the block. The original 1977 “Smokey and the Bandit” movie promo car also had one very special passenger: Burt

Reynolds, the movie’s star. The Hollywood legend went up on the block and joked with the crowd before he got the

bidding rolling – and roll it did! The Trans Am trend that has been growing all week only got better as the Bandit car

sold for $550,000. It will be headed to a great new home: John Staluppi’s Cars of Dreams Museum in Florida.

Another incredible Hollywood moment happened today when Transformers stars Optimus Prime and Bumblebee en‐

tered the arena to much fanfare, with impressive video introductions produced by director Michael Bay. Bay was on

the block along with stunt driver Randy Peters to encourage bidding ‒ and they sweetened the pot by offering walk‐on

roles in the next Transformers movie to the winning bidders on the famous vehicles.

Collectors cars started out strong on the block even early in the day, with the first six‐figure sale happening before

noon. But the collector cars offered in Barrett‐Jackson’s Salon Collection today were the biggest stars. An extraordinary

2015 Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach (Lot #1392) was auctioned for $1.76 million, a new auction record. The top sale of

the night was a trio of extremely rare VIN #001 Corvettes from consecutive years – 1955, ’56 and ’57 – that sold for

$1,815,000. A stunning 1939 Mercedes‐Benz 540K

with a “Cabriolet A” Body Conversion attracted a lot of

attention, bringing in $1,485,000.

Three more cars for a cause were on the block today,

with 100 percent of the hammer price of each vehicle

going straight to the chosen charities. A 2016 Chevro‐

let COPO Camaro, VIN #001 (Lot #3008), was sold for

$500,000 to benefit Kettering University; a 2016 Ford

Focus RS (Lot #3009) hammered for $550,000 for the

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation; and a 1932

Ford Hi‐Boy (Lot #3010) that was a McGee tribute car brought $105,000 to the

Alex Xydias Center for Automotive Arts.

There were plenty of famous faces on hand today in addition to Michael Bay

and Burt Reynolds, including Detroit rocker Ted Nugent; three‐time masters

champ Bubba Watson; professional rally driver Ken Block; NASCAR greats Tony

Stewart and Jeff Gordon; major league baseball players Marco Estrada,

Jacoby Ellsbury and Paul Konerko; and NHL players Shane Doan and Mike

Smith of the Arizona Coyotes, as well as Andrew Ladd of the Winnipeg Jets.

This is officially the last year Marty and Laura Hegyi will run the Springfest Corvette Show.

Anyone interested in seeing what is involved in making this event a success is welcome to

“shadow” them during the weeks prior to and/or the day of the show.

The 2016 event returns to DeSales University and features special guest, Wil Cooksey!

The show flyer appears on the previous pages.

Vendor and Sponsorship forms are available from either Marty or Laura. They will be accepting

accepted as well — $100 covers a complete trophy class and permits one free car entry.

streamers, and join him for the 2016 Allentown St. Patrick’s Day Parade. We expect that parade vehicles shall enter the

at club meetings in preparation for parade drivers and party goers alike.

The parade staging time and location will be confirmed at our March 10th meeting, but please let your interest be

known so Dave and Susan can appropriately plan.

Page 11 AllentownCorvetteClub.org ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 23, Iss. 2 | February 2016

Mon., Dec. 21 | ...On December 16th, General Motors filed for trademarks on the terms “E‐RAY” and “CORVETTE E‐

RAY” in the Automobiles category with the US Patent and Trademark Office, leading to speculation about whether the

General had concrete plans to produce either an all‐electric or hybrid Corvette. You may recall that back in 2014, the

trademarking of the name “Zora” led to a similar flurry of supposition about a mid‐

engined, range‐topping “super‐Corvette,” but then again, you probably didn’t hear

about GM putting in requests to register “Spark Activ,” “Badlands,” “Enclave Tuscan,”

or “Regal TourX” either.

To some extent, trademark filings are a bit of corporate CYA – General Motors has an intellectual property division of

their legal department, and in terms of resources it’s not a particularly taxing process to just go out and register any‐

thing that you might possibly want to use later. Just look up why Ford’s supercar is just the GT and not the GT40 if you

want a real world example of why automakers should trademark everything in sight. With that in mind, the E‐RAY filing

could very well be the result of a note in the margins of some internal meeting, rather than a hint of things to come.

On the other hand, the success of theTesla Model S P85D shows that there’s a market for an electric car that can run a

2.8 second 0‐60 time, and Chevrolet could certainly use the Corporate Average Fuel Economy benefit of replacing a few

Z06 sales with something that delivers a better number in the fleet‐wide calculation.

If you’d ask us to guess, we’d say a hybrid is more likely than a pure electric Corvette; one look at the Spark EV’s spec

sheet compared to the Volt shows that GM’s all‐electric mojo still isn’t quite where it needs to be to go head to head

with Tesla, and a performance hybrid would make more sense. Something akin to the discontinued 2008‐2013 Tahoe

Hybrid would seem to be in GM’s comfort zone, and an LT1 with electric assist would be a formidable powerplant in‐

deed.

Sun., Jan. 31 | A dramatic duel between two GT heavyweights, Corvette and Porsche, ended with Corvette winning

the GT Le Mans class in a thrilling 54th Rolex 24 at Daytona in an unbelievable 1‐2 photo finish.

The two Corvette C7.Rs were separated by 0.034 of a second after 24

hours, with Oliver Gavin edging Antonio Garcia at the checkered flag. It

wound up as a duel between teammates, as the Corvette Racing team

allowed the two Corvettes to race for the win between themselves in

the final 15 minutes after a previously trouble‐free drive the first 23

hours and 45 minutes.

Coupe driving around the White House grounds. In the Jerry Seinfeld hosted episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Cof‐

fee with President Barack Obama, a Corvette takes center stage during a good chunk of the show. You can't help but

American Muscle Exhibit Opens Jan. 14 | January 15 through March 25 the National Corvette Museum is hosting in the Exhibit Hall fourteen examples

of American Muscle as part of a Hot Rod / Street Rod exhibit. The exhibit features a little something for everyone, from

1932 to 1973, and from Chevrolet to Ford and others in between.

"When we added on the Exhibit Hall in 2009, the thought was that the space could be used for a variety of exhibits,"

said Bob Hellmann, Facilities and Displays Manager. "We try to select exhibits that will appeal to a new audience, while

offering a little something extra for our Corvette fans. This allows us to give our visitors 45 minutes of Corvette and

about 15 minutes of something different during their tour."

New to the Floor: Spy Corvette

Jan. 21 | It's not unusual to see a Corvette in a spy movie, but what about using one

in real‐life spy operations? Such is the case for a 2006 Black Z06 that is now displayed

in the National Corvette Museum's Skydome. Owner Naveed Jamali (FBI code name

Green Kryptonite) of New York City spent three years working as a double agent for

the FBI against the GRU (Russian military intelligence) and his Corvette was one of his

personal cars used in counter‐intelligence operations. You can see the Corvette on dis‐

play now through June 1, 2016. Read more about Naveed's story on our website.
