BRIEF TITLE - Patterned Playing

The Brief Background

Design a complete pack of quality patterned playing cards including packaging.

A deck which will be both luxurious in design and strong in quality.

Anyone who has ever brought a regular pack of cardswill know that they don't last long if you use them regularly. The edges split and tear, they become and bit scruffy around the edges.

The design of a deck of cards is an added bonus to their functionality – and something that has been toyed with for decades. You can fnd a deck of cards with almost anything on them.

Concept/Proposition

Look at existing playing card designs, traditional, quirky, retro, obscure, and contemporary.

Considerations Stock, scale, colour palette, usability, clarity of design, durability, budget, print methods.

Target Audience Deliverables

Anyone who uses playing cards, playing card collectors, design enthusiasts.

X3 full deck with legible suits and identical fronts & packaging.

Tone of Voice Approx. Timeframe

Contemporary, quality, sophisticated, youthful, colourful.

2 – 3 weeks.

BRIEF TITLE - Cats and Dogs

The Brief Background

Illustrate a large range of cats and dogs and produce a coffee table style book which has no real purpose or meaning other than being aesthetically pleasing.

A word – free book which will contain only images which essentially make no sense other than being a series of illustrations on the same two subjects.

Although graphic design is most often about an image which has a purpose, this doesn't seem to effect many trends in design and illustration. Several re-blogging design communities such as fffound.com refect popular trends among young designers and design appreciators.

A large quantity of the images on websites such as this are popular design pieces without having any purpose or clear message.

Concept/Proposition

Use a consistent style of illustration using chalk, charcoal, pastels and colouring pencils. Look at current trends for nonsensical but attractive design.

Considerations Mandatory Requirements Book design and style, colour range, budget.

All work should be supported by a broad range of research.

All images should be supported by a broad range of visual investigation in the form of design sheets and journals.

Target Audience Deliverables

Anyone attending the Manchester book fair (Artists, book/zine collectors etc, cat and dog lovers)

10-15 Hard cover hand bound illustration books.

Additional deliverables if time allows:Series of cat/dog badges, bookmarks and paper bags.

Tone of Voice Approx. Timeframe

Anonymous, light hearted, nonsensical. 4 – 5 weeks.

BRIEF TITLE – Pop Up

The Brief Background

Design a pop up book based around famous scenes from children's fairytale books such as Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

Grim children's fairytales such as Little Red Riding Hood have been popular for centuries. Copies of the tales are constantly being modernised and updated, the easiest way to do this by changing the illustrations which accompany the story.

In recent years, the popularity of more contemporary stories such as Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas, macabre characters like Emily the Strange and the most recent flm adaptation of Alice in Wonderland has soared.

There is a very steady trend for grizzly tales, which both children and adults enjoy.

BRIEF TITLE – Value Packaging

The Brief Background

Design a range of value packaging for a leading supermarket such as Tesco, Sainsburys, Asda or Morrinsons.

Every supermarket has a value range of products on offer to their shoppers. Often there is a value alternative to many of the more middle range items such as coffee, tea, biscuits, toilet roll, fruit and vegetables etc. Many people prefer to buy value as with some items there is little difference between the economy range and the more expensive alternatives.

However much of the packaging is dowdy, old fashioned and unattractive.

Concept/Proposition

Update a range of packaging for a supermarket's value range.

Think about what you can work with on a minimal budget – how can you use design effectively with the resources available and make the packaging contemporary and desirable.

Considerations Mandatory Requirements BUDGET – COLOUR – SUBSTRATE

On a minimal budget there is little to work with. Look at supermarket's value ranges and analyse what the typical characteristics of the packaging consist of.

Must include basic product information, be almost completely type based, minimal colour pallet.

Must include supermarket logo.

Target Audience Deliverables

Supermarket shoppers on a tight budget. Proposed range of value packaging.

All resolutions and designs must be supported by a broad range of visual investigation in the form of design sheets and journals.

Tone of Voice Approx. Timeframe

Clean, smart, modern, straight forward. 3 weeks.
