programs in our Christian unions, we look forward to a year of tremendous sowing for transformation.

We have recognized the new dynamics where majority of students are resident off-campus. This is a challenge posed by the rapid expansion in university education. Due to our commitment to reach all students irrespective of their location, we have planned to engage this emerging opportunity of the non-resident student. This calls for more strategic partnership with churches, other Organizations, and the Christian faculty to further the good news of the Kingdom of God.

There is no doubt that our students are from everywhere and going everywhere after campus. We commit to position them for godly impact in line with our motto, “Reaching Students, Changing Nations”. We do invite you to partner and support the ministry of FOCUS towards a transforming vision.

FOCUS wishes all our esteemed students, associates, churches, and other partners and stakeholders, an enjoyable and reflective Christmas and happy new year as we look ahead to a hopeful future. Shalom.

SHORT TERM MISSIONS NKSSAs part of our commitment to missions and cross-cultural exposure, FOCUS sent two Kenyan missionaries to Norway in Oslo; Sam Wanjala and Nancy Ndirangu who are working among students both from high schools and universities. They are introducing a number of programs including Bible studies. In the same exchange program, FOCUS received 5 participants this year, 3 Norwegians and 2 Ethiopians.

The 5 are having a great time learning how to fit in the Kenyan culture by learning Swahili and a bit of Sheng (local slang). The Ethiopians (Rediet Tadessa and Lidya Berhanu) have already left for North Rift Region where they are involved in student ministry and are quite elated to be there. They enjoyed the Regional Ezra at the University of Eldoret, saying, “We have never had such a Conference. It was so alive and the people were so numerous and deeply connected.” This just shows how our ministry keeps growing both in impact and numbers. The Norwegians will be in Nairobi for three months (October to December). While attending FOCUS Sunday in KU Main Campus CU, they were really touched and even said, “This remains the most attended event organized by an IFES movement I have seen. The sermon was great and the openness of the students was great.” The three (Tor Eivind “Kiptoo”, Karen “Mwende” and Kristian “Kamau”) will spend part of their time in Kenya in Mathare working in a children’s home and school so as to appreciate the cultural differences.

From The National Director’s DeskReflection on Our Calling: The Question of ImpactWe are grateful to God for His abundant blessings in

the year 2015 (Psalm 103). He has certainly sustained us as individuals, families and as a nation. Therefore it is incumbent on us to reflect on the goodness of the Lord and praise His name.

We look forward to the future with hope. This hope is not based on the present circumstances. It is based on God’s faithfulness and the opportunities He has bestowed on us for the days ahead.

Increasingly, our country has been on the spotlight for several wrong reasons: Corruption has become a national disaster – entrenched in both the public and private sectors. It has been domesticated to all levels, expressing itself in different ways including exam leakages; negative ethnicity is thriving – even the recent numerous riots and closure of a number of university campuses manifest deep ethnic interests; the stories of self-gratification within the church continue to engulf us; and the increasing inequalities that perpetuate poverty among the majority section of the society present an ever-growing time-bomb.

FREDS LIMITEDFREDS limited is an income generating

arm of FOCUS Kenya. Here is information about when and why it was formed and what the future prospects are.Over the years, Christian institutions have seen a decline in income from donations which are very crucial for their operations and ministry facilitation. In light of this trend, the idea of FOCUS Kenya having an investment arm to trade and make profits would be channeled towards supporting ministry. This was birthed in 2006. Initially, the project was named FOCUS Resource Development Support (FREDS). The idea was refined, and the results were the incorporation of a company by the name FREDS Limited in 2007.FOCUS has relied upon the faithful giving of Associates since its inception. For the formation of FREDS, FOCUS needed capital. The concept was floated to Associates accompanied by an appeal to contribute equity for the company. 49 Associates came together and contributed each one according to their ability. 50% percent of each person’s contribution would go to FOCUS and 50% would be the individual’s stake in the company. The 49 associates agreed to form a holding company that would collectively represent their investment in FREDS. The company was registered in 2007 as FOCUS Holding Limited. With the capital raised, FREDS was formed with FOCUS Kenya having 51% stake and FOCUS Holdings Limited having 49% stake. Separate Boards of Directors were appointed to oversee the running of the two companies. The capital raised was immediately invested in car import business, and that remained the main income generating activity for the first 5 years. In 2012, an opportunity opened up for FREDS to venture into Real Estate. Courtesy of an associate, FREDS made a deposit on a parcel of land along Gatanga Road in Thika. Sales began in April of 2013.

Kenya Coast Polytechnic first years on a retreat at Anza fit Program

Technical University of Mombasa CU Leadrs on a Retreat

STUDENTSAnza FYT: The Anza FYT (First Years Training) Program, a first years’ orientation program, received more than 2300 students across the country during the September to December semester. Many testify to finding campus a home away from home through this orientation program. Vuka FiT: Various universities, colleges and institutions across the country have embraced the Vuka Fit (Finalists Training) Program. The classes are a preparation for the transition into life outside campus. Topics such as entrepreneurship, CV writing, engaging interviews and responsible church membership have been tackled by different associates. Many of the participants have confessed that they were not fully prepared for life after campus before but are now well equipped as they embark on the new journey.

Prayer PointsLeadership Transitions: Let us pray for the many Christian Unions which have handed over leadership to new teams; pray for God’s grace and strength as they serve in the CUs.Missions: Let’s pray for the many people who have gotten saved following numerous missions across the regions in the country.5 REGIONS HOLD EZRA CONFERENCESThis year we had Regional Ezra Conferences in 5 Regions. In Western Region (hosted by MMUST), about 1300 students attended. In North Rift Region (hosted by University of Eldoret), more than 500 students and associates attended, despite the many strikes in the region. In Mt. Kenya Region (hosted by Chuka University), 400 students from 20 CUs across the region attended.

flashes of fear through the body. In April this year, a young vibrant teacher was killed, and very recently in October another teacher was abducted and taken to Somali, but this time round the story ended well as there was jubilation after her rescue by the Kenya Defence Forces. The STEM Community Development program has been in partnership with Windle Trust Kenya for the last 12 years in the recruitment of teachers who go to the camp to work as English Foreign Language instructors. When they approached us to recruit two teachers to report in the month of October we thought no one would dare go. Today we have two young people; Irene Kagendo formerly of Maseno University and Onesmus Yaata formerly of Kenyatta University who responded to the call. We had planned mission preparation training prior to their reporting and in the course of this the abduction of one of the teachers happened. They were definitely very afraid but did not pull out. They both took the step of faith and stepped out in the courage that God gives to those He calls. These 2 covet your prayers as they serve among the Somali Refugees. Moving on after the Garissa University College AttackIt has been said that Kenyans are very good at moving on, at times too quickly. When the Garissa massacre happened, everyone seemed very angry. Now, with so many other things that demand our attention as a country, the Garissa incident is an event in the

distant past. It was joyous to see one of the Students, Anastasia leave hospital on 13th October 2015. It was all smiles! Thank you to all who supported her, paid her a visit and prayed with her. Within the same week, it was sad that for 6 months, a family of one terror victim had been looking for the remains of their loved one, only to discover that it had been claimed by another family and long buried.

Let us also join in praying for this family, that had hoped against hope that their daughter could still be alive, only to learn that she was long gone. As we move on after Garissa University college attack, let us continue to pray for many of the affected and are still recovering. It will be a great joy to see the last student leave hospital.

ASSOCIATESPartnership with Churches – Northern Nairobi RegionThe Church is one of the key stakeholders of FOCUS. After meticulous planning for more than two months, the Northern Nairobi Regional Council had a successful FOCUS Sunday with 17 churches in Thika. On 20th September, Students and Staff attended Sunday morning services in Thika town. This was not only to preach, but also to share about the work of FOCUS amongst the young people. The afternoon brought together 70 Associates and Pastors who shared how the ministry of FOCUS had an impact on them. It was very inspiring to hear stories from the 1970’s, 1980’s to the present. North Rift Associates Dinner On 7th August 2015, Associates gathered at the Noble Hotel for the annual Eldoret Associates dinner. It was a great time of fun and fellowship as the speaker Professor James Ole Kiyiapi, challenged the associates on the topic of Governance and the need of being the salt of the world at their work places, families, churches and in all spheres of their lives. The Kitale Associates Kesha was held on 19th September while Eldoret Associates prayer breakfast was held on 12th September 2015.

2016 ASSOCIATES CONFERENCE: HESABIKAThe National Associates conference will be held on 30th April to 2nd May 2016. The theme will be: “Christian Professionals Translating Concern into Action.” The venue and charges will be communicated later. Plan and prepare to attend, be part of the change agent for this nation.Get Connected, Get Involved! Are you part of the FOCUS Associates Branch in your town of residence? that are against the moral Christian values like gay marriage, rise against impunity in the country, and have Christ say on ethnicity, religious conflicts and many other issues that need Christ like minds to handle. In reference to this, the book of Esther 4:1-13, was also a reference to stand out like her and say, “If I perish, I perish.” He encouraged the congregation to move from talk to action. In Mt. Kenya Region, at the Kagumo Teachers Training College, about 500 students and Associates attended. In this region, the theme Christian Response to Sexual Revolution was handled. STEMExpansion Brings Hope to More CUsThe STEM Program has continued to grow and we now have 33 STEM staff in student ministry from last year’s number of 30. Meru University, Maasai Mara and Murang’a University College Christian Unions were the new beneficiaries of the additional three STEM Staff this year. The excitement was evident as the Christian Union leaders who had hoped that one day a STEM staff will be based in their college took charge of the process of looking for housing and equipment. The students could not hide the joy of having a FOCUS staff stay close to them. Happiness Wangui, the STEM staff based in Murang’a shares her testimony: “At first, being a pioneer in the three CU’S was overwhelming. I felt inadequate to present the image of FOCUS among the students whose expectations seemed too high. However the reception was warm and through the support of the CU leaders I got a house in one of the students’ hostels. With this accommodation, I am easily accessible to the students. I find joy in hosting students and engaging in

heart to heart conversations with them. I look forward to a fruitful time of ministry and lasting impact on these students.”

One of the students had this to say, “I take this opportunity to express my gratitude for the step that you took to mobilize me for EZRA conference, it was really a great encounter with God. I have grown more spiritually and my life will never be the same again.” (Liz Kiura, 2nd year student Chuka University). In Pwani Region (hosted by Technical University of Mombasa), more than 500 students, associates and international students attended.FOCUS SUNDAYSIn the Northern Nairobi Region, students remembered their fallen heroes, on 1st November at the Kenyatta University, Main Campus. It was a great day set to network with others as students share experiences across Christian Unions, build unity within the Region and create FOCUS awareness. This forum brought together different CUs from the region and in remembrance of Garissa University College which was part of this region, Joseph Namutala led the congregation into a minute silence in honour of the students who lost their lives in the university

college attack in April this year.In Southern Nairobi Region, Philippians 2:15 was the theme, “Shining like Stars”, at the Chiromo Campus event. This was exposited by Gregory Papoi the legal officer at National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK). He pointed out that as young people ,to shine in this world, there is a call to be involved in what is happening in the nation, a call to be engaged in the activities representing Christ and always being the light and salt to the world. He encouraged young Christians to be light against family foundations

Hope for the world @ Ksh 200In the contemporary cultural climate throughout the globe, hopelessness appears to reign supreme. An unseen ever-present enemy, haunts our hopes and tests our faith and yet hope characterizes the biblical narrative from its opening lines, through its

first disappointments to its final promise. In ‘Hope for the World’, our ethics are shaped and our witness emboldened as we trust in God’s great and precious promises that we shall be raised up on the last day into a fully realized Kingdom of God.

He pointed out that as young people ,to shine in this world, there is a call to be involved in what is happening in the nation, a call to be engaged in the activities representing Christ and always being the light and salt to the world. He encouraged young Christians to be light against family foundations

Now more than ever, the need for a deep knowledge for the defence of the Gospel (Apologetics) is necessary. Here are books to achieve just that.

In ‘Hope for the World’, our ethics are shaped and our witness emboldened as we trust in God’s great and precious promises that we shall be raised up on the last day into a fully realized Kingdom of God.

of justification by faith but also its social dimensions.

programs in our Christian unions, we look forward to a year of tremendous sowing for transformation.

The simple and important question we cannot evade is: “How can a country with so many Christians continue to decline in its moral fabric as in the case of Kenya? This certainly is a question of Impact. If the church in Kenya does not become relevant to the times, it may as well be an early declaration of a post-Christian era. Therefore, FOCUS as a ministry to the university and college students in Kenya, must strategically focus on its vision of impacting all sectors of the society. We will do this by strategically investing in a future in

which Christians, especially university and college graduates increasingly impact the church and the market-place for Christ. There must be evidence that Christians are the light and salt on the world as envisioned by Christ himself.

FOCUS accounts for the privilege of working among 143 universities and colleges, over 42,000 Christian Union members in any given year, about 10,000 Christian graduates every year, and numerous Christians in faculty and administration in the universities. We trust God to help us translate the privilege of vibrant student witness into a transforming nation. We do acknowledge that transformation is not an event, but we also recognize that God has granted us the privilege of enthusiastic constituency of students and Christian graduates who can shift the tide towards fruitful Christian witness, well overflowing beyond the national boundaries.

As FOCUS launches the new 2016-2020 Strategic Plan, by God’s grace, it will speak to the much-needed transformation. Besides, new programs this year and in the year 2016 speak prophetically to our nation. We have already held the Shahidi forum and a forum for Christians in university faculty and administration, as positive steps for greater witness on campus. As we plan for the inaugural National Leadership Summit (NLS 2016), the inaugural National Associates Conference, (Hesabika 2016)
