Ghost Stories and Reports on Campus By Katherine Hillman

The University of Maryland is known for its business and engineering programs, an abundance of research oppor-tunities and a diverse campus. What the university is not known for, however, is the presence of ghosts.

The first reported ghost sightings weremade at the oldest building on campus: the Rossborough Inn. The Inn is part of the original property of farmhouse owner Charles Benedict Calvert, who eventually donated the land to the Maryland Agricultural College. According to the UMD Archives, numerous people reported about the ghosts of a Confederate soldier who camped on the college grounds and Miss Bettie, a woman who managed the Inn during the Civil War. People speculate that she is responsi-ble for spooky occurrences, such as doors opening and lights turningonandoffwithoutexplanation.For these reasons,the Inn is considered haunted. In 1981, a dining services employee named Larry Donnelly reported seeing a female ghost in the Inn. His story was corroborated by a waiter who saw the same woman wearing a yellow dress. In May 2012, a Maryland Paranormal Research team spent a few nights at the Inn and got a number of strange voice recordings. Another building on campus that is thought to be

haunted is the South Campus Dining Hall. The dining hall was built in 1974 and is the largest one on campus. The up-stairs is home to the WMUC radio station and the Diamond-backnewspaper.StudentsandstaffintheDiamondbackof-ficehavereportedaghostworkinghardwhentheyarenotthere. Sometimes, books will be rearranged in the bookshelf withoutexplanation.Also,clutterfromthemanager’sofficewas cleaned up... even though nobody had the keys to the of-ficeexceptforasmallnumberofstaffmemberswhoweren’tthere at the time. Additionally, as the oldest building on campus, Morrill Hall is considered to be the most ghostly building at this university. Throughout the years, people have reported hearing marching feet outside Morrill Hall, possibly because the Morrill Land Grant Act required military training and students drilled in front of the building. Their spirits may still linger because cadets who misbehaved were punished in front of the building. Also, many report strange smells comingfromthebuilding.Thismaybeduetoscientificex-periments conducted in the building back in the day, when Morrill Hall was a science hall. Morrill Hall was one of the onlystructurestosurvivetheGreatFireof1912.

5 Minute Single-Serving Apple CrispIngredients:3 tablespoons coconut oil1/4 cup quick oats2 tablespoons chopped pecans21/2tablespoonswholewheatflour(divided)21/2tablespoonsturbinadoorbrownsugar(divided)1/2teaspooncinnamon(divided)1/8 teaspoon salt2-3apples(about2cupschopped)honey for drizzling

Instructions:1. Melt the coconut oil in the microwave. Stir in the oats, pecans, 2 tablespoons of thewholewheat flour, 2 table-spoons of the sugar, 1/4 teaspoon of the cinnamon, and the salt.Mixuntilwellcombined.2. Chop the apples and toss them with 1/2 tablespoon of thewholewheatflour,1/2tablespoonofthesugar,and1/4teaspoon cinnamon.3. Layeralittlespoonfuloftheoatmixtureinthebottomof two 9 ounce ramekins or mugs. Top with about 1 cup ofthechoppedapplesandheaptheremainingoatmixtureover the top. 4. Microwave for 3 minutes and 30 seconds – the apples should be bubbling and the whole thing will reduce in size. Remove and let stand until cool enough to eat. Be careful becauseit’sgoingtobereallyhotatfirst!Also,thetextureimproves as it rests and cools. Drizzle with honey for an extragooeykindoftexture.Yum!

Snickerdoodle Mug CakeIngredients:CinnamonFilling/Topping:2 tsp Swerve Sweetener1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

Mug Cakes:2/3cupalmondflour2 tbsp Swerve Sweetener1 tsp baking powder1/4 tsp cinnamon1/8 tsp cream of tartarPinch salt1 large egg2 tbsp melted butter or avocado oil2 tbsp water1/4tspvanillaextract

Instructions:Filling/Topping:1. In a small bowl, whisk together the sweetener and cinna-mon. Set aside.

Mug Cakes:1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the almond flour,sweetener, baking powder, cinnamon, salt and cream of tar-tar.2.Addegg,butteroroil,water,andvanillaextractandstiruntil well combined.3. Instructions:1.Cuttopof1bellpepperoffanddeseedanddestemtheinside.2. Usingthetipofasmallknife,cutoutajacko’lanternface into the side of the bell pepper.3.Standthebellpepperupandfillwithslicesoftheothertwo bell peppers or other vegetables.4. Serve with ranch.Enjoy!

Sweet Potato with Parmesan and Herb ButterIngredients:1 sweet potato1 tablespoon of butter2 cloves chopped garlic1/2 teaspoon dried oregano1/2 teaspoon dried parsley1/2 teaspoon dried basil1tablespoonoflemonjuice1 pinch saltfreshly ground pepper1/4 cup shredded parmesan cheese

Instructions:1. Prick one well-rinsed sweet potato several times with a fork. Wrap it in a paper towel and place in the microwave for eight minutes, checking and turning occasionally.2.Oncetheeightminutesareup,startchoppingyourgar-lic and gather all of your other ingredients as the potato is coolingoff.3. In a microwave-safe small mixing bowl, add butter,chopped garlic, oregano, parsley, basil and lemon juice.

Stirthemixtureandputinthemicrowavefor30seconds.Oncethemixtureismelted,stiritalltogetherwithaforkand add in the parmesan cheese, salt and pepper.4. Slice open the sweet potato and divide it into two. Place onamicrowavesafeplatewiththefleshyorangepartfac-ing upward. Take a fork and slightly mash up the potatoes with the outer skin still intact.5.Withaspoon,evenlydistributethebutterandherbmix-tureallovereachthepotatoes.Feelfreetomashitupmorewithaforksothateverycrevicegetsfilledwiththeflavor.Place in the microwave on high for 1-2 minutes, to melt the cheese.Letitcoolandenjoy.

Microwave “No Bake” Oatmeal CookiesIngredients:2 cups sugar1⁄4cupmargarine,softened1⁄2cupmilk1⁄4cupcocoa1 teaspoon vanilla1⁄2cuppeanutbutter3 cups quick oats

Instructions:1.Mixtogethersugar,margarine,milk,cocoa,andvanil-la. Heat in microwave 2 minutes. Stir. Heat in microwave 2 more minutes. Stir in peanut butter until well blended. Addoats.Dropbyspoonfulsontowaxpaper.Allowtimeto cool.2. Measure oats carefully; too much and they will be too dry.

1) Get Your Flu Shot!AsrecommendedbytheCDC,gettingthefluvaccineisyourbestdefenseagainstcatchingthefluvirusthisseason.Itisimportant tonote that therearemanystrainsof influenza,andtheflushotonlyprotectsagainstthemostcommonvirusstrainsthatexistbasedoncurrentresearch.Inotherwords,keep in mind that there is a slight chance that you can still getthefludespitereceivingthevaccination.However,ithasbeenproventhatgettingtheflushotsignificantlydecreasesyour chances of catching the flu and in the case that yougetsickwiththeflu,theseverityoftheillnesswillalsobeconsiderablyreduced.Allthingsconsidered,gettingthatfluvaccinemaybeyourbestshotatstayinghealthythiswinter!

2) Wash Your Hands Frequently!At one point or another, we have all come across some-bodysufferingfromthefluorhavegottenthefluourselves.Washing our hands with soap and water will help rid the skin of anything thatwemay have been exposed to aftercomingincloseproximitytosomeonewiththevirus.Fur-thermore, since hand transmission plays a critical role in the spreadoftheflu,manyphysiciansrecommendsingingthe“HappyBirthday”songtwicewhilescrubbingyourhands,which helps you wash your hands longer. The physical act of scrubbing will shed skin cells, along with any debris or pathogensresidingonthehandsandfingernails.Therefore,

handwashing will greatly reduce the chances of getting sick thisfluseason.

3) Always Keep Hand Sanitizer on Hand!College life can get busy, and students may not always have the time to frequently wash their hands. Though hand san-itizer will not replace hand washing with soap and water, alcohol-basedsanitizerscanhelpfighttheflubydisruptingthe outer coat of the virus. Thus, the virus will no longer be abletoexertitspathogeniceffectsonthehost.

Other Important Tips to Keep in Mind:• Do not share food or drinks with those who are sick• Avoid touching or shaking hands with a sick person• Get plenty of rest to boost your immune system• Eat healthy foods to keep your body nourished• Stayhydratedanddrinkplentyoffluids
