POTENTATE'S MESSAGEEs Selamu Aleykum to all.

Being a Shriner is not a right, it is a privilege and I feel most privileged to be one and serve you as such.

In this last message, I must convey that in my travels I met so many wonderful Shriners and bound to many, in and around our boundaries, I mean our Units, Clubs, and Temples in PNSA. I have been invited to so many places that I can not keep track, it has been so overwhelming. To sum it up it is a wonderful experience that I would suggest to all Nobles.

I have had such great counterparts, they are amazing, we broke the record of attendance in PNSA. Because of that, I was asked to start a new Pote`s group called Pote`s forever, with it we will travel together to PNSA, Imperial Sessions and do our own gathering.

Yes there have been downsides too, and some tried to be a speed bump and make it interesting but that is part of being a leader, just shake it off and carry on.

As you can see from the financial statements, the bleeding has slowed and I hope that the next Divan will appreciate the situation we left them with.

We are happy with the 12 new members we brought in and a little sad that we could not bring more to finish the way we wanted and leave the Legacy that we wanted to leave behind.

As I mentioned before, we have to run our present Center as a business. What I meant was we need to increase the number of our Hall rentals, keep the kitchen and bar open for many multi purposes, have coffee and tea gatherings and let people come to play cards and games. In Saskatchewan WAWA Shriners advertisement says, “Cheapest beer in Town”.

Ill Sirs and Nobles, we are an organization that is appreciated and we are loved by many; if we market our Center properly and run it as a business, people would love to give us their business.

We are fortunate to own such a property which will pay us dividends in the future. As time and circumstance allow, the land around us will be in demand. When

this time comes, we will have a property that can provide substantial income. Whether this is by building industrial space or renting out our existing building. It is then that our land and building will begin to pay us for all our time and efforts. Until that time comes, we must continue on the path of being frugal in our spending and keeping our eye on the future.

Our Parades have been record attendances; all towns were happy and glad to see the Shriners coming to attend their Parades. One sad place was Edmonton Klondike Days. My Nobles, our Parade Marshall David Page spent extended time dealing with Northlands and they do understand how important we are to the Citizens of Edmonton; and, they are willing to give us all the things we would like, such as interviews on TV, all the coverage, and parking. It will be announced that there is a Shriners Parade; as long as we start just before ( we can negotiate that ) the main parade, so we can appear full force before the largest crowd for the best publicity. My Nobles, this is the best Parade for the Northern Alberta Shriners and we should be there and use this opportunity to our advantage!

Once again, thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to serve you as Potentate and I wish that I could do more for this great cause.

Sincerely and Fraternally yours, Ferit (Fred) Susun

2018 CASH CALENDARSIt is that time of year again when we are selling our Cash Calendars. This is one of the largest fund raisers for Al Shamal, and we need the help of all our members to make this fund raiser a success. We all need a calendar in our homes, offices, etc. and we all have neighbors, family and friends that I am sure would be pleased to help with the support of our children. We have calendars in the office waiting to be sold, it would be greatly appreciated if you could call Denise and help us out in anyway possible to sell out all 3500 calendars. A special thank you to the people that have helped to support this fund raiser, but they can’t do it alone we need help from each and everyone of you to be successful.

RECORDERS RAMBLINGSAs we now move towards the colder days of winter

it is a great time to visit the Masonic lodges within the area. This is a wonderful opportunity

to search out potential new Shriners and renew some of those acquaintances that may, due to

the course of time, have lapsed.

Al Shamal needs to learn from history and the opportunities that have been missed. We require the development

of a strategic plan for both Al Shamal and Al Shamal Holdings

Association. We are continually placing Band-Aids to keep our temple running and eventually all we will have are band aids resulting in a crisis, something we are fast approaching! This may sound dismal, however you CAN AND MUST do, something about this situation now.

Learn from the past, look beyond your club or unit, we need to be committed and come together as a Temple to secure and strengthen our membership, we must move past any negativity and dismiss the trends that we see happening in Freemasonry. It is essential to have an eye towards preserving our traditions, whilst changing our direction. It is essential not to use all the traditional ideals that measure our improvement, but rather draw the ideas from those that work for us in the present. We have to commence the business of Freemasonry and Shrine in a positive way to enable us to promote success.

I have outlined the Imperial Potentate’s plan to improve membership in another section; the membership of Al Shamal has decreased over the last 5 years by 20% or -157 nobles. If we all brought in ONE member we would double our membership in a year. Creations equal the numbers of our deaths, IT IS OUR OBLIGATION to be persistent in curtailing the suspensions and demit requests; by stemming those we would have a wonderful opportunity to begin the improvement of Al Shamal and stabilise it for the future.

As we move towards the close of 2017 the officers of your temple require your support for 2018 they are looking for members who want to ensure the preservation and future of Al Shamal so we can continue to assist the children who, so profoundly require the excellent treatment offered by the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

“Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value.”

TLC REPORTOnce again, the TLC “Fire Trucks” have been parked after another successful parade season. The TLC rode in 12 Parades over the summer and enjoyed the appreciation of the crowds lining the parade routes.

If you are a Noble looking to join a Unit, please feel free to contact any TLC member for more information.

A “Summer Parade Windup Dinner” was held in October and our members enjoyed a great meal and fellowship.

As the Christmas Season approaches, from all of the TLC members and spouses, we would like to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and all the best for 2018. May you be surrounded by family and friends this holiday season.

DAUGHTERS OF THE NILEIn August, we were honoured to have Supreme Queen Karen L. Keuther arrive for her Official Visit to Al Amira Temple. A pot luck supper was held at Past Queen Marian Olyan’s home, where Supreme Queen Karen enjoyed meeting and visiting with the members present. Special “Thanks” to PQ Marian for opening her home to us.

On Monday, August 21st, we held our second Ceremonial where we initiated two new Princesses: Lanie Uchman and Kristy Muckler. Congratulations to the Officers for performing a wonderful ceremony for our new Princesses!

The Dancers, Patrol, and Ambassadors performed their routines. A formal banquet was held where Supreme Queen Karen gave an inspirational speech.

A number of Ladies travelled to Calgary in support of Sakkara Temple’s Supreme Queen’s Official Visit. Many Ladies also travelled to Victoria, Helena, Butte, and Billings to attend the Official Visits and Ceremonials.

Eight Ladies travelled to Ft. McMurray on September 22nd. After a wonderful supper and meeting with Ladies from Aurora Nile Temple No. 3, we installed the Officers for the upcoming year. On Saturday, we made over 150 heart shaped pillows for the Shrine Hospital Canada! We also presented a 25 year pin to Princess Sheila Robinson. It was a great day of fun, friendship and accomplishment! Thank you Aurora Nile Club for your hospitality, hard work, and dedication to Daughters of the Nile!

In early October, I was able to travel to Abilene for Texas Days where Noble Gerry and I were received with a very Texas warm welcome. It was special to witness their Ceremonial.

On Saturday, October 7th, Princess Bev Shumilak organized a very successful workshop, where over 250 “stuffies” were made for the Shrine Hospital. Thank you all for you dedication and efforts!

Later that month, six Ladies from our Temple travelled to Reno for Northwest Silver Daze. We visited a number of local sites, renewed friendships, and scouted out the location for Supreme 2019.

At our November Session, we held our third Ceremonial where Shirley Keller was initiated into Al Amira Temple No. 157 Daughters of the Nile. That evening we celebrated Founder’s Day where Past Queens reminisced about their year. Princess Fran Peacock was

presented with her 25 year pin. Congratulations Fran and thank you for your dedication to our Order!

As the Christmas and holiday season approaches, on behalf of Al Amira Temple and Daughters of the Nile, I wish all of you a Merry Christmas, a very Happy New Year, and good health, great happiness, peace, and contentment in 2018!!

When you touch someone’s life - it is a privilege; When you touch someone’s heart - it is a blessing; When you touch someone’s mind - it is a honour; When you touch someone’s soul - it is a triumph; When you touch someone’s spirit - it is a miracle.

PULL-TAB FAMILY PORTRAIT (Do you have any tabs that look like these?)

One might well ask what would compel someone as old as me to run around the countryside collecting scraps of aluminum. Why would a sane person gather in thousands of beverage can pull-tabs? WHY? And why, by all that is Holy, would you do this, relentlessly, for years? Believe it or not, there is a reasonable explanation.

It's for the same reason you take the time, and exert the effort, to set aside those same tiny pieces of metal for me — so that our Shrine can continue to operate; so we can get those special children the unique care they so rightfully deserve. That is our cause. That is our mission. And we accomplish it — in this instance — one tiny loving step at a time.

Please continue to set those pull-tabs aside for me to pick up. It helps us do what we are dedicated to doing — helping those who cannot help themselves.

CLOWN REPORTAs the summer falls further behind us I would like to thank all the clowns who participated in the many events and parades we were involved in this summer.

As the Christmas season approaches, we have some events to participate in as clowns, as well as Santa -- 5 move outs in total, so far. If you can participate in an event please contact our coordinator Dan (DOC) at [email protected] or by phone 780-695-1957.

On a sad note, we received a letter from the “Kids With Cancer Society” asking us not to participate in their Christmas event this year, due to the negative “Clown Sighting” Incidents that have been in the news and social media over the past year. This is very unfortunate for us as clowns and the negative stigma that comes with it. We are out to make children smile & laugh. We strive to help them forget about a condition or problem they may have, even if it’s only for a little while.

Kevin Tobias (Toby)

Attached letter:

Good morning Derrick,

I am the new Family Programs Coordinator here at the Kids with Cancer Society. I wanted to contact you and say thank you for your many years of support at our Annual Christmas Party and dedication to children with cancer.

Due to the negative “clown sighting” incidents in the news and media, we thought it best not to have clowns at the Christmas Party this year. I hope you can understand our concern for our young children attending.

We truly value your support.

PETSMART ST. ALBERT (#3007) TEAMS WITH AL SHAMAL SHRINERS

On Monday, Nov 6, Aiden Chapman, Manager of St. Albert PetSmart spoke to the Nobles present at their regular Dinner Meeting about the partnership between the two organizations. She stated that each customer in her store is asked if they would like to purchase a stuffed animal to go to a child at a Shriners Hospital (dog, car, and rabbit).

The original intent was to send all of these toys to Shriners Hospital Montreal, but customer response produced over 500 toys and counting (presently filling up Potentates Office). St. Albert PetSmart customers surprised everyone with their generosity. With so many of these toys available Al Shamal will distribute some of these toys in Edmonton area, as well as donating some across the border to Shriners Hospitals in the United States. Some may also make it to Mexico City Shriners Hospital.

Thank You – PetSmart customers from St. Albert

Thank You -The “Daughters of the Nile” ladies are doing all the leg work of getting these toys to Shriners Hospital Montreal.

Thank You -Aiden Chapman for thinking of Al Shamal Shriners as your charity partner.

BECOME A VIRTUAL MENTORDo you remember that special person who made a difference in your life? The person who took the time to ask your name, introduce you around or show you the ropes? If we’re lucky, we have one person in our lives who made a positive impact personally or professionally.

Being a Virtual Mentor is your opportunity to make the same difference in the life of a man on his way to becoming a Master Mason and Shriner. All it takes is willingness, enthusiasm and time.

As a Virtual Mentor, you will be paired with a Candidate with similar interests in your area. Communicating by phone, e-mail or in person, you’ll have the opportunity to share your knowledge and enthusiasm about Masonry and about being a Shriner. You’ll answer questions or concerns, help find the right Lodge best suited to the Candidate’s interests, and help him with his journey to becoming a Shriner. You will also have the opportunity to make a new friend.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

1. Commit to being active in the Virtual Mentor program for 1 year.

2. Explore the Candidates interests in our fraternity. Seek to understand his reasons for wanting to join, learn about his family, hobbies, interests and does he have any Masonic friends.

3. Educate the Candidate about local Lodges and about the nearest Shrine Centre.

4. Encourage the Candidate to visit local Lodges and the nearest Shrine Centre.

5. Meet the Candidates Lady and introduce her to local Brothers and Nobles.

6. Introduce the Candidate to local Brothers and Nobles.

7. Introduce the Candidate to the local Shrine Centre and members.

8. Educate the Candidate about the Roadmap to becoming a Master Mason.

9. Educate the Candidate about the Roadmap to becoming a Shriner.

10. Introduce the Candidate to local Masonic and Temple events. Attend with him if able.

11. Introduce the Candidate to other Shriners and to Clubs and Units.

12. Communicate regularly with the Candidate and make sure he is getting his needs met and that he is getting properly educated about our fraternity.

PUBLIC RELATIONSAl Shamal Welcomes New Shriners

With a Shriner KISS

“Keep It Shriner Smart”

You now are members of “one of the largest pediatric sub-speciality health system in the world”. Your ultraistic nature will benefit a suffering child and hold promise for a ray of hope, for blue sky.

You are not only a Shriner of today but an aspiring Shriner of tomorrow. As a new Al Shamal Shriner, we invite you to make your journey a very personal one to identify and live your story; and share your story in the spirit of fun, joy, vision; with your family, the Shrine family and friends; a legacy to be enshrined.

As a valued Shrine member, you are empowered personally and collectively to take action, and feel that your involvement is significant to you and the Shrine Temple as a whole. It is encouraged that as best you can: forge enduring relationships; identify with those around you; share initiatives, creativity, skills and wisdom. We urge you to pursue something that is bigger than yourself. As a family we respect and recognize your efforts and contribution to the Shrine and within our communities.

The key to take advantage of our Mission to the Shriners Hospital for Children is to embrace our personal development for Shrine Essentials to value, educate, develop the interest’s skills and abilities of each individual Shriner. 2017 PARADE REPORTIt was an excellent season.

We had a 135 moveouts in 2017 v 106 in 2016. The Clowns account for most of the growth. They did 11 moveouts in 2016 v 25 this year of a net gain of 14. The other units between us account for 15 more move outs.

That’s still a big increase. The total growth in 2016 was only two more move outs than 2015.

I have an observation I would like to share. At the parades with a mix of us bumpkins joined by city units, we bumpkins have better participation rates.

We parade for ‘Our Kids’ and our goal is a good showing on behalf of ‘Our Kids’.

I would also like to see each parade unit pick their ‘parade guy’ and that all the Parade Guys including the Parade Marshal participate in some private on-line discussion group dedicated Al Shamal parades. The idea would be to build a body of knowledge by sharing ideas and stories of what worked and what did not over the parade season.

We must have some talent on board who could set this up for us. Ideas?

Shriner Hospitals Parade

K-Days thinks our contingent is too large and has made various proposals to me for three years. None have led to a solution to ‘their’ problem.

It is obvious that a pre-parade can cost us TV eyeballs.

It is not so obvious how many ‘parade watcher’ eyeballs

we lose but it can be measured. Do folks arrive at the

parade at the last minute or are ¾’s there 45 minutes

before the Premier so they can get a better view? This

can be discovered. We don’t need guesses.

We will take a short fall on eyeballs. What can K-Days

offer us to make up for it. This year they offered us ‘name

inclusion’ in their own Parade marketing plus additional

minutes of advertising for our parade on radio.

I have asked PP Bruce and PR Chair Ross meet over the

winter with K-Days to discuss the idea of us leading the

main parade with our own Shrine Hospitals Parade.

PP Bruce and Ross know this stuff and do the math we

need. So it all comes down to a matter of numbers.

I made this proposal in mid Sept to the K-Days Parade

Chair. He has not yet replied. I will ask Illustrious Sir to

follow up if I do not hear soon.

Respectively submitted,

David Page

difference in their lives. We would like to introduce our two

new ambassadors:

Isabella RoseFrom birth, Isabella had difficulty feeding and sleeping. Her parents, Roselyne and Tim, went from doctor to doctor seeking answers, but no one could identify a cause. As she grew, her parents became convinced that something was seriously wrong. Isabella’s speech sounded like she was whistling and she had ear infections constantly. Searching for AnswersFor five years, Roselyne and Tim sought answers for their little girl but continued to be unable to obtain even a cause or a diagnosis. Some professionals thought Isabella was cognitively impaired; others thought she was deaf. One day a family friend in the Chicago area heard about the issues Isabella was facing and suggested the family apply for treatment for Isabella at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago. The family did not know at the time that their friend’s father was Dick Anderson, a member of Medinah Shriners and, at the time, Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Shriners Hospital in Chicago. Anderson was glad to be of help. He has said that helping Isabella and her family find the help they needed was life-changing, and that he wished all the Shriners understood the impact they can have on the health care system’s patients and families.

At their first appointment, an interdisciplinary team of professionals assessed Isabella and, within minutes, provided a diagnosis. Isabella had a submucous cleft palate, a form of cleft palate that is not easily identifiable, as the palate is covered by a thin membrane. “It felt like the whole world came down on us; we finally knew the diagnosis,” said Roselyne. Isabella was scheduled for surgery to repair the cleft and subsequently received speech therapy for two years. Finding Her Own VoiceIsabella, now 14, lives in Florida with her family. She has gone from struggling to be understood to becoming a gifted vocalist, and hopes to perform professionally one day. Isabella volunteers at a local veterinary hospital, pet sits and babysits. She enjoys painting, poetry and outdoor activities. She also actively seeks ways to give back to Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Emily MellishEmily’s mother, Joy, did not experience significant issues during pregnancy, but moments after Emily was born, that

Free To Be MeThe Stories of Isabella and Emily

changed. Emily was rushed by ambulance to a hospital in a larger city only hours after birth, and spent her first two weeks in the NICU, where doctors gave her a complete assessment.

Emily was born with spina bifida, as well as severe scoliosis (missing eight ribs on her left side) a leg-length discrepancy, additional orthopaedic conditions, bladder and kidney problems and other issues.

When she was 6 weeks old, Emily had surgery to close the defect over her spinal cord. The following day, a long list of serious complications began, keeping her in the hospital for 28 days. During this time, the Mellishes learned about Shriners Hospitals for Children from a close friend. “It was comforting to know that even before I needed to worry about a place to take her orthopaedically, that someone had come forward and said there was a place where Emily would be taken care of,” said Joy.

Finding the Right TeamEmily was first seen at Shriners Hospitals for Children – Erie when she was approximately 6 months old. There, she has undergone several surgeries. Other surgeries, including a VEPTR (Vertical Expandable Prosthetic Titanium Rib) procedure, which stabilizes the spinal curve and levels growth, were done through a collaboration between Shriners Hospitals for Children and Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Emily has also been seen at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Philadelphia, where external fixators were used to straighten Emily’s leg at the knee, and increase leg length.

After this, she was able to ride a bicycle for the very first time. Emily always amazes her doctors with her “no limits” attitude.

Giving Back with Beads for NeedsToday, Emily is an energetic and sociable 11-year-old. She loves dancing, swimming, painting pottery and public speaking. In 2012, she started Beads for Need, a foundation dedicated to raising funds for Shriners Hospitals for Children through bracelet and photograph print sales, and has raised more than $80,000 for Shriners Hospitals for Children – Erie.

“Without Shriners Hospitals for Children Emily would not be Emily, she would be forced into a box,” said Joy. “With Shriners Hospitals there are no limits to what she can do.”

A NEW REFERRAL PROGRAM ANNOUNCED

The three “R”s of membership development are recruitment – the successful creation of new members; retention – providing a program that keeps your current members active, engaged and involved; and restoration – restoring to active membership

those members who have lost connection with the fraternity. These concepts are critical to the future success of our organizations.

As Shriners, we all have accountability to our fraternity. It becomes our responsibility to educate others about Shriners International, create more Shriners, recruit more Freemasons, and refer more patients to Shriners Hospitals for Children. Collaboration is essential, and we must all work together to promote successful and efficient membership processes.

Shriners International has developed a new approach to membership development, changing the membership paradigm with the introduction of a new referral program. With this new referral functionality, current nobles can now directly refer names of friends, family members and acquaintances who they feel would make good Shriners.

Similar to beashrinernow.com, this new referral program is administered through WebFez and links the prospect with his referring noble, promoting natural mentorship based on a pre-existing friendship or acquaintance. The new process can be tracked and reported, and each referral triggers automatic communications to the referrer and the prospect. Once a noble makes a referral, he then receives tools and resources to mentor his prospect to creation or restoration. The program encourages constant collaboration, so that everyone can share their Shrine with the good men around them.

A recommended part of the new program is the encouragement to host fellowship parties and rush events. Fellowship parties should be in a relaxed environment and have an open table/social concept, with no formalized membership presentation. These parties should be open to prospective members, but with no pressure for membership recruitment or restoration; and membership literature should be available upon request.

Rush events have an open house, social and educational concept, and are open to prospective members and their families. A multifaceted presentation providing information on Shriners, Masonry and affiliated

organizations is encouraged at these events, including information about temple clubs and units. Membership literature should also be provided to all attendees.

Our goal for each Imperial Year is less suspensions, less demits and more affiliations. The leadership of Shriners International has added the lofty goal of 12,000 new Creations from Session to Session. This goal is attainable if temples focus on matching and surpassing their own best number of creations in the last five years.

There are many resources available to help us reach our membership goals. Using the new WebFez referral system is the perfect place to start, and beashrinernow.com is still a great resource. There are also a lot of helpful tools on Shriners Village, including the Membership Toolkit, Roadmap to Membership Success, and Marketing Materials Ordering System. We also encourage everyone to work with their Regional Membership Director and the Office of Membership Development, and to send your temple membership team to the annual Membership Seminar for invaluable tips and information.

SPINESCREEN APPNew SpineScreen app helps parents detect signs of scoliosis in kids. Shriners Hospitals for Children encourages parents to add screenings to their pre-school routine

Parents can now check their child’s spine for possible signs of scoliosis with the new app SpineScreen developed by Shriners Hospitals for Children®. Available for free on the App Store and Google Play, SpineScreen detects curves when the phone is moved along a child’s back, giving parents a quick, informal way to regularly monitor their child’s spine.

Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine that can restrict movement and in some cases lead to other serious medical conditions. It is most commonly diagnosed between 10 and 15 years of age, when children grow rapidly. Some cases, however, can go undetected for periods of time because during this point in a child’s life, fewer vaccinations are required, so they may see a doctor less often. Since early detection is crucial, Shriners Hospitals for Children Medical Center — Lexington doctors encourage parents to download the free SpineScreen app and check kids as part of their back-to-school routine each year.

“Education is part of our mission at Shriners Hospitals for Children and we hope this app will be a resource to parents and caregivers as part of their routine back-to-school preparation,” says Vish Talwalkar, M.D., pediatric orthopaedic surgeon for Shriners Hospitals for Children Medial Center — Lexington “It is important that all children be evaluated for scoliosis throughout their development as early detection is key. The earlier a child is treated and seen for scoliosis the more options we have available for advanced treatment if necessary.”

Shriners Hospitals created the app as part of a broader initiative to highlight the importance of regular screenings and to educate parents on signs of scoliosis and treatment options.

“With doctors and staff who are global leaders in the treatment of scoliosis care, parents turn to Shriners Hospitals for Children because they know their children will receive the best care possible,” Gary Bergenske, chairman of the Board of Directors for Shriners Hospitals for Children adds, “Since scoliosis usually requires ongoing medical treatment throughout childhood, our

15

commitment to provide care regardless of the families’ ability to pay is a huge relief to parents.”

If you have immediate concerns about your child’s spine or other possible medical conditions, please consult your health care provider. For more information on scoliosis screenings, treatment options and to download the app, please visit shrinershospitalsforchildren.org/scoliosis.

SHRINE HOSPITAL COMMITTEELetter from a patient

Our story started when my daughter was 12, an age when emotions are running high, Junior High school is starting and appearance and boys are top priority. I had taken my children in for their annual physical, like I did every summer and that’s when the pediatrician diagnosed Angie with scoliosis. We knew very little about scoliosis then, but let me tell you, we soon knew everything about it. Scoliosis comes in many different degrees and my daughter’s was already fairly advanced. She had a 42 degree curve at the top of her spine and around 32 degrees in her lower back. Her spine was basically shaped like a backwards “S” and her rib cage had started to twist giving her a hump on her back. She had been experiencing back and neck pain, along with several headaches. We were devastated with the news and even more upset when we learned that she would have to be fitted for a very uncomfortable back brace to stop the progression of the curve. My beautiful daughter was expected to wear this stiff, uncomfortable brace at all times with the exception of when she was showering. It was heart breaking and after a year and a half of misery and confinement of the brace, unfortunately the curvature had increased and the brace did not stop the progression as hoped.

When my daughter was around 15 or 16, the curve had continued to progress, her rib cage became more twisted and the pain increased. Respiratory issues developed and the decision regarding the surgery had to be made. I thought it would be so cruel to have her fused from her neck to her buttocks,.She was a dancer and an athlete and that would certainly change her ability to continue the things she enjoyed. I started to research options and found a procedure that was less invasive. They focused on fusing the top curve only, which in turn pulled the bottom curve straighter as well, but certainly left the individual with more mobility....however trying to get that procedure in Canada, at the time, was not possible. And that’s when our knight in shining armor, or at least in Shriners silk threads, came into our lives.

Darwin Harrison was so dedicated to the care and well being of Angie and he worked with her case from the inception to the very end, which was 5 years . He took away the stress of setting up appointments, flights, cost and put us in the care of wonderful surgeons, in an environment where you had a support system, and no shortage of children and parents that had similar or more complex problems than ours. The advice, care and support that we received from the Shriners was second to none! Angie no longer felt alone with her problem and she was confident when the decision had to be

made that the surgery was in her best interest and she was relaxed knowing that she had the ultimate care. The Portland Hospital and staff are so focused on children and families that need their help, they all displayed wonderful attitudes and compassion to every one that walked through their doors.

My daughter is now 26, she had her last follow up visit to the Portland hospital when she was 21. The surgery was an enormous success. She stands tall, after the surgery, she was actually 2 inches taller from straightening her spine. Her pain and her headaches are now minimal and the long term prognosis is, she will remain an active, happy, attractive young woman. She now has a wonderful man in her life and she is the proud mother of a very active, sweet, three year old daughter.

We are so grateful to Darwin for all the time and effort he invested into the well being of Angie. Not only did he assist with her medical needs but he boosted her self esteem through profiling her at a Shriner’s dinner and having her speak about her experience. He included her in the Shrine Circus and brought joy to her by letting her bring some of her friends and feel special that day. His follow up calls continued long after her surgery and we will never forget his kindness and how he and the Shriners organization turned our difficult times into a happy ending!

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts Darwin and the Shriners.

Love, Angie & Deb Bianchini

SILVER WINGSThe Silver Wings just hosted their Halloween Spooktacular on October 28th and it was an amazing evening with the best crowd ever – lots of families and so many people dressed in their costumes made it just the best night possible.

We need to thank Noble Ari Hoeksema for saying grace before our meal and Lady Kathryn for yet again donating a beautiful quilt for our prize draw, we also need to thank Noble Rick and Lady Bev Shumilak for being the best costume judges ever, at such short notice.

During the party the Silver Wings came out with birthday cake to celebrate 10 years as a Unit in the Shrine and let me tell you that the cake went down well and quickly disappeared – we also need to give a big shout out to DJ Ron Rog – who does this gig for the kids - a big man with a big heart.

We take time to thank everyone that donated prizes for our party and we look forward to a capacity crowd for next year – Potentate Fred – hope you feel better than you did at the party – thank you to Dandy’s Fine Foods for the wonderful food and lots of it and to everyone that helped with clean up – again thank you.

This was just such a fun night for families to enjoy time together and proves that this building still knows how to rock it out – the place was bouncing.

We look forward to our Hockey Night at the Shrine on December 2nd at Biffs – come out and watch the Oilers kick the Flames where it hurts and have some pizza and fellowship along the way – check with Trevor or Calum from the Wings for info.

ARAB PATROL REPORTOn September 28, Nobles Cal Firth, Mahlon Weir and Jean Deslauriers travelled to Lamont to attend the official opening of a new 50-acre park in the town, as well as the dedication of a special park bench. The bench was funded by the Arab Patrol’s association in recognition of the many years local businessman Noble James Lopetinsky provided breakfast to Shriners attending the annual parade in Lamont, in particular, members of the Arab Patrol.

The bench is situated in a part of the park that overlooks a beautiful natural pond. Next to the bench is a plaque on a pedestal that reads:

Dedicated to James Lopetinsky of Lamontfor outstanding support of Shriners

Presented to the Al Shamal Marching BandSeptember 28, 2017

In addition to recognition of the Shrine on the bench’s pedestal, the town created a donor recognition tree on the side of the park’s activity centre. Included on that tree is a large leaf naming the Arab Patrol.
