Potentate's MessageJoseph Brunk

We were also honored to host Stephanie Dallmon, who organizes and runs the Big Ray Car Show to honor her late husband and to benefit Tripoli. I again want to thank each and every volunteer; these opportunities don't always come around, so it was awesome to see everyone pulling in the same direction to take full advantage of this one!

The Tripoli car show was a huge success, thank you to the volunteers and especially Rick Loch and Dave Bevsek. Without their hard work and the generosity of the Bevsek family, this event would not have been possible. Gerry Arnholt is to thank for our great Golf Outing. The weathered beaten players had fun, and it was a great cordial, competitive event playing scramble golf. We should also thank our Silver Bucket Noble, Damon Albers, with his persistence to get people to purchase raffle tickets. Can't get past him.

Looking forward, please take a close look at the slate of upcoming events. We have a busy schedule ahead full of great events for our members. If each Noble or Lady can find a friend or family member to invite to these events, we can ensure their success AND

multiply the fun... The more the merrier! Additionally anything we can do to get brothers from our Blue Lodge to participate is well within our effort; new faces, ideas and energy is the life blood that will build on the momentum we have going right now. In the next couple months we have MULTIPLE excellent events to invite or Blue Lodge brothers to; Tartan Ball, OKtoberfest Table Lodge, Ladies Fashion Show, Feztival of Trees, Potentate's Ball and New Year's Eve! These are all UNIQUE events and should be celebrated and supported as part of our Tripoli culture! I would like to point to the Ladies Fashion show as an example where we as a group might be able to invite ladies who would have a blast at the event and then return home to tell their husband about the fun she had. Let's be honest, if someone's wife is enjoying herself and then encourages him to come have fun being a Noble of the Mystic Shrine, we all win! Thanks again to all the units in the parades, all the volunteers and all the folks supporting our events. I am excited to see everyone at the Stated Meeting!

Page 2

Greetings Nobles and Ladies, I hope everyone has enjoyed their summer this far, we (hopefully) still have lots of wonderful weather coming to try and wring every last ounce of enjoyment out of! As we head into September and back to our regular stated meeting schedule, I have good news to share about the results of the Bucks playoff run...they won and so did Tripoli! Thank you, Pat Jackson for organizing all the volunteers to fill the slots. We recently celebrated that Tripoli victory by taking the volunteers--who worked so incredibly hard--to the Brewers game. Luckily, Ben Rodgers--of Beja Shrine--planned a Potentate's trip to Milwaukee for a Brewers game and we took that as an opportunity for some Grade A fellowship.

Articles  are  coming  in  on  time  which  is                            fantastic. We now  need  all units  and clubs                            to write something to keep Tripoli  Shriners                            informed   about  you.  This   is  where   you can excite people to join and get involved in your activities. It does not need to be long, in fact you can write it in your email, no formal word processors needed. I want to recognize some individual member, shriners, ladies  and  general  volunteers in a  new  column,  Humble Heros,  starting  out  with  the  Ladies,  to  give  them some

recognition. The ones I see the most are Jan Capen, and the office crew, Carol Hennig and Sondra Greaven. Bob Capen fell through on getting me something about Jan so I went straight to the source. The problem with humble is that they won't recognize themselves. So this article comes straight from Jan Capen, page 9.   Ceil Klein Tripoli Tattler Editor 262-581-3500 [email protected]

We had over 4,000 people come through our

doors to see our beautiful building 2 years ago.

Let's   make this year bigger than ever.

We still will need people to be available to

answer questions and keep an eye on our

building. We will also have the Melham Café

open for lunch and refreshments.

Please wear your fez.

It would be great to have all our Units, Clubs

and Alliances represented.

and share his expertise, and recently received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Midwest Clown Association. The Christmas season means Santa Bruce is bringing joy to children in many venues, sometimes joined by his wife Mrs. Claus (aka Sue Nelson). Bruce perfected his Santa skills at Santa Claus School in Michigan and was certified by Charles Howard, the Macy’s Parade Santa, in 2019. Bruce is a tour guide for the Tripoli Shrine Center and is in charge of the annual Doors Open Milwaukee event, which opens our doors to thousands of visitors each year. Behind every good Shriner is an excellent wife. Bruce’s wife Sue currently works as Associate Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Bruce describes her as the intelligent one in the family. Thank you Bruce for all you do.

This is a Noble we all know well. Bruce has been clowning around since he was 15 years old, and you can’t take that out of him. You will find him when the circus comes to town, or maybe performing the Mr. Fun Magic Show, or visiting from the North Pole as Santa. Either way, he is fun to be around. Bruce joined the Garfield Lodge in 1980 and was the Chaplain there until it disbanded. Currently he belongs to Lincoln Lodge in Menomonee Falls and joined Tripoli Shriners in 1988. He joined the Clown Unit, of course! He served as Assistant Circus Chairman for the Tripoli Shrine Circus for many years and still finds joy in being the MC, officially opening each show. He is a member of the Royal Order of Jesters, the Directors’ Staff, and serves on the Scimitar Foundation Board. In 2011 he received the Distinguished Service Award for 20 years of service for his work with the Circus. Bruce worked for the City of Milwaukee for 30 years and runs his own entertainment company called Promotional Media. He specializes in children’s entertainment and “putting smiles on faces since 1976” with his Mr. Fun Magic Show and Blinky the Clown comedy performances. His company has provided balloon clowns and face painters for the Milwaukee Brewers for over 20 years. Bruce belongs to the International Brotherhood of Magicians and the Houdini Club of Wisconsin. In 2021 he was awarded the Order of Merlin Excalibur. His love of magic never disappears. He continues to give lectures at various conventions

When asked to give some attainments of her volunteer work, Jan Capen wrote this... I’ve been thinking about the article for the Tattler. But as I think about the things that I do for Tripoli, there is not just me but so many other ladies who help with those things that are done for each and every activity that goes on at Tripoli. My role as a Feztival Chairman is supported by many other women who stepped up when Bob and I decided to try it. They came without any reservation and said “I want to be a part of that. What can I do to help?” When the office and Amy were in need of help and organizers, along with me, Carol Hennig and Sondra Graeven also said they would gladly give a day a week to help with whatever needs to be done. There are women who make sure the display cases are in beautiful form for every holiday and season. They bake and cook when food is needed. They come to volunteer, they show up at parades and dinners to support their Noble. When Bob and I put together events and parties our Potentate year, Sue Wegner, Lynn Schmid, Melinda Winter, Carol Hennig, Lorin Jones and many others were there to help with set up and registration, tabledecorations and anything else that was needed. Especially Sandy Foti who is there to run the Food Court. These are all ladies that care about Tripoli and making the load of the moment lighter. A saying that Bob and I have come to experience over and over again. cont. p10

The ladies who all work together to make the Fashion Show Fundraiser a success each year for the Potentate Lady’s charity choice for that year. The gifts are better and better every year because they care. I’m maybe just a bit more vocal than most when it comes to public speaking (the high school teacher in me). It doesn’t fluster me and so I will go to businesses or organizations to promote the Feztival. But that doesn’t mean that other women wouldn’t do the same. Doug Winter’s sister, Joyce, is a Feztival committee member and she drops in on businesses and restaurants and bars and talks up the Feztival like it’s her calling! I jump in to help because Bob and I believe the load is lighter with help

of many hands. So many women CHOOSE to help because they believe in what Shrine Masonry does. All I have to do is go to an Imperial Session and hear what some of the Shrine kids go through to know, what WE ALL DO, MATTERS! It sure MATTERS to them. You’ve seen it. By Jan Capen These volunteers put their seal of approval on all that they do with the intent to do a better job next time. Planning for the next year just after the event ended. They are eager to take initiative, abound with creativity, have infinite patience, are driven by passion, but most of all, stay humble about their work. These are the qualities of our volunteers. Bless you for your work. By Ceil Klein

William S. "Bill" Bailey Elected Imperial Potentate of

Shriners International with First Lady Debby Bailey

Thanks for the help in the MSA Parade

Frank Foti getting a helping hand from

Imperial Potentate Bill Bailey.

Bill Bailey was born and raised in Ogden Dunes, Indiana, a small lakeside community built on the shores of Lake Michigan, where he and his wife, Debby, currently reside. They have been happily married for 44 years and are extremely proud to have two sons, Rob Bailey and Ross Bailey, to follow the family tradition of becoming Shriners.

His father, Robert B. Bailey, Past Imperial Potentate of Shriners International in 1995-1996, are only the second father and son to serve as Imperial Potentates of Shriners International.

In memory of departed Highlander Tom Cobb Tom was a piper and served the Highlanders as Chieftain and achieved the rank of Highlander Chieftain Emeritus. Tom is known for revitalizing the Highlander Tartan Ball and brought events such as the Highlander Unit Mess to Tripoli. Tom was very active in the local Celtic and Military veterans’ communities. Tom was key in the placement of the “Battle Cross Memorial” in the Southern Wisconsin Veterans cemetery. He was responsible for pipers playing at the graves of service members at the Veteran Cemetery each Memorial Day. Until we meet again may God hold you in the palm of his hand.

Thank you- Highlanders, we had a nice turn out for Cascade and Iron Ridge Parades. The band sounded great and looked great. These are prefect parades for our unit. Tartan Ball -KILTS HAGGIS BAGPIPES- Highlander Tartan Ball Oct 9 at Tripoli Temple mark your calendars, save the date! $75.00 per person, beef tenderloin dinner and open bar. Special dietary needs are available upon reservation request. Shawn B. Athy Highlander Chieftain

The summer is over as well as our parade schedule. The Legion participated in seven parades spanning from the end of June to the end of August. Participation in these parades ranged from two to six members. Unfortunately only one parade had 6 members riding on our float. Most parades had only three to four members. Membership participation has dwindled in the past few years due to health issues or participants being summoned by the Black Camel. Next year we would like to see more of our membership participate. Our float looks great with six to eight members on it. Two years ago we bought folding chairs for the float so if you cannot stand for the full parade, you can sit down. We also have a step ladder to help you get on and off the float. Our next meeting will be on September 20th at 7pm. Members of Tripoli with a DD-214 are encouraged to join us.

Brew City FezheadsDuring the months of July and August the Fezheads met at two local breweries…Black Husky Brewing and Raised Grain Brewery. Unfortunately because of the summer activity conflicts our attendance for those meetings were lighter than normal. Those that did attend enjoyed the local brews and had a great time of fellowship. The Unit discussed and worked on the upcoming Oktoberfest Table Lodge dinner. This will be a fun event in the style of a traditional Masonic Table Lodge but with some variations. Instead of the traditional toasts with wine, we will be toasting (with beer) Milwaukee’s German heritage and beer making history. Our MWGM Gary Stang will be speaking at the event and Chef Robert has prepared a special German style dinner for the evening. Games, music, and singing will also be on the agenda for the evening. Please note that all MASONS, LADIES, and FRIENDS are invited to attend. This is an opportunity to share a unique Masonic event with others. Please see the flyer in the Tattler for more details. Our next meeting (September 12th @ 4:00PM) will be at City Lights Brewing, 2200 W. Mt. Vernon Ave., Milwaukee. Ladies, friends, and guests are always welcome to join us too. Be safe! Cheers…Bob Capen Brewmaster [email protected]

By the way, while we were waiting for the Tropical Depression, you in Southeastern Wisconsin were battling thunderstorms, high winds, downed power lines. At our July meeting, three Proposals for new members were generated, so we are on our way again! The Proposals will be read at Shelomoth Temple’s meeting on August 14th. August 7th meeting included a lesson about Princess Nydia, the first Lady of the Crescent. President Betty did a great job putting together and presenting the lesson. More lessons to come. Due to the uptick in Covid cases, we are proceeding with the face mask project for the clinic here in Puerto Rico; hopefully the Shriners will be able to hold the clinic in October as planned. Thank you to the members of Shelomoth Temple who have donated fabric for the project. We will also be selling Brazos Gitanos, a Puerto Rican dessert. See me in November to try them out! Looking ahead, our next two meetings will be in Arecibo (northwest coast of the island) and we will be joining one of the Eastern Star Chapters for a halloween party in October. Then on to either Ponce or Cabo Rojo for the next meetings. Stay tuned . . . By Princess Nancy Ryburn, Lilly of the Valley Club

Lilly of the Valley

Summer is starting to wind down and I still don’t have all my summer projects completed. I’m sure some of you are in the same boat? In any case, it’s time to start looking forward to our Fall activities–with children going back to school, lodges meeting again after a short summer respite and Shrine regular stated meetings. I’m still hoping that more of our Shrine Club members are able to start returning to our regular monthly meeting, but I do understand they may still be hesitant to be out in a group. On our list for Fall is the return of the annual Feztival of Trees during Thanksgiving week. I’ll bring this up at our September meeting and hope our Club can be as generous as we have been in previous years. Fraternally, Dave West, President 262-549-0923 [email protected]

Greetings from Puerto Rico . . . ! Opening back up after the many months of Covid is like the unfurling of a flower – all in God’s time, God’s bounty, God’s purpose. Lilly of the Valley Club has now had the good fortune to meet face-to-face twice; both times in San Juan with the presence and support of Past Potentate Jose Segui. We had also scheduled a special work session via Zoom, but “Potential Tropical Cyclone Six” changed that!
